Huckabee's Almost Empty Cleveland Press Conference

February 26, 2008 11:49 AM

ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has taken to Ohio for the day to campaign in the run up to the all important primary here on March 4.

He started the day in Cleveland with a press conference that perhaps didn't go as the campaign had hoped.

Regardless of Huckabee's odds, usually wherever the former governor campaign, the local press descends, with area television and print media taking the lead in questioning the Republican hopeful.

This morning, however, was an intimate availability with only representatives from the four networks that travel with Huckabee every day.  The press conference was announced late Monday in an email from Huckabee's press secretary.

The smaller scale allowed for those present to speak with Huckabee on issues ranging from his private tour of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to the lack of Republican debates.

"There's a race going on and I wish Senator McCain was debating me this weekend. I wish we were gonna be in Cleveland tonight on stage or in Dallas or in Houston or San Antonio or Austin or somewhere between now and Tuesday having a debate," he said, "I think Republicans deserve that across the country. I think certainly Republicans in these states that are voting deserve that and I'm disappointed that we're not in that same kind of forum. I think we should be and it's unfortunate for voters that we're not."

Asked if the Huckabee campaign had approached McCain's campaign about such a debate or forum, Huckabee said, "we've made it very clear that we would love to have, whether it's a debate or a forum or q&a where both of us are there. I think any type of format would be acceptable to us and any location would be acceptable to us."

Huckabee also continued his mantra that the race isn't over until someone obtains the required 1,191 delegates, "we don’t feel there’s any obligation to withdraw from this race until somebody has the nomination clinched with 1,191 pledged delegates."

He also needled the reporters, noting that each network has a different delegate count.

"One of the things that I found interesting is every news network has a different number of how many delegates McCain has ... you’d think if this was so settled everybody would have the same number," he said.

"So you guys tell me why none of your networks have the same number, if it’s so clinched, if it’s so absolute, why does no one have the same numbers? And no one does."

Ol Huck makes good points. You'd think McCain, who survived 5 yrs in a POW camp, would not be afraid to debate Huck.

The Commander Guy, why would fear have anything to do with it? Huckabee is out. He's only continuing to campaign out of sheer vanity. My best bet is that he's auditioning for Cable News.

Regardless of who will win, it is not an unsound principle to afford Republican voters the opportunity to indicate their preference for a candidate. McCain is so far ahead, and Huckabee so short of resources, that it is tactically better to shut Huckabee out by not debating.

However, by taking a slight risk that Huckabee would upstage him, McCain could demonstrate that he has what it takes to take on the Democrat machine. he needs to show confidence and stature, and not sly calculating.

Or is Huckabee the man with the stature and gravitas, who has just been lacking the finances to put on a slick show?

Only americans could consistently be so gullible as to habitually allow the liberal media to brainwash them into who needs to be the next President!!
"Tell a lie often enough, long enough and loud enough, and people will believe it to be true" - Adolf Hitler 1937
Give Gov Huckabee some coverage. Give him a chance to expound his policies.
What is everyone so afraid of?
And enough already of the idiots who keep parroting the fallacy that Gov Huckabee is solely supported by right-wing evangelical fundamentalists.
In Georgia - Baptist HQ's of the USA - Gov Huckabee shared an equal 33% of that "evangelical" vote with Mitt & McChange.
1 debate with McChange and Huckabee takes the nomination.
He has no skeletons in his closet.
He is very electable.

Huck, At long last, it is over. Save some dignity, and a political future, by doing the Romney thing.

You are becoming a clown for the liberal networks, and an embarrassment to your party.

When you are behind 27 points going into the 4th Quarter, you don't quit the football game. It may take 4 TDs (a miracle or McCain blowup), but Huckabee is right to stay in until McCain gets 1191. If Huckabee wins Texas (possible) and Ohio (less likely), then the race will not be wrapped up and could go to a convention. In any event, he gave conservatives a hope and a choice.

Figure this, McCain will not choose Huckabee (Huck should say no), and he will go the way of Ford-Dole-Kemp. Those 4 letter words spell Clinton and Carter.

Huckabee should just go campaign around the country for McCain and Congressional candidates, keep building his base and take over after Obama/Hillary screw things up in 4 years.

You Huck supporters act like the man doesn't get any media coverage. You complaint is on a forum where.... ABC NEWS IS COVERING HIM!

He's been covered ad nauseum for months.

HE CAN'T WIN. IT'S OVER.

As for skeletons in his closet..ummm... how about those 12 murderers he set free? Or the rapist Wayne Dumond, who then raped and killed again? Or the 14 ethics violations?

Stay in Huck! We need you to keep voicing the conervative opinion in the market place of public ideas.

bigred is back!

Dude - Your Main Man Duncan Hunter saw the light and he endorsed Huck the Humble.

You put your faith in DH once, why not do it again?

This type of politics should open America's eyes. Houston we have a problem if a debate can not happen. This process of 2008 Presidential campaign has shown that our country is out of control and the people do not matter. Thank God for Huckabee trying to save United States of America, the right way. I'll write him in because he is not back door dancing. I believe in miracles. I don't vote for the winner, I vote for the right person, it will take a vote away from the corruption.

Huck is a big-spending, tax-raising, big-government Republican, with no talent for foreign policy and a nasty personal streak when it comes political rivals.

Dude, hang it up! You are mathematically eliminated--like the Texas Rangers every August.

Posted by: carl | Feb 26, 2008 4:01:09 PM

Time to get out huck. your 15 minutes of fame are over for this run at the Presidency. Come back and fight another day.

Posted by: FelixFD | Feb 26, 2008 4:06:25 PM

Carl, your opinion is inaccurate so I suggest you read the Fair Tax Act and realize what you're words are saying. Dude, you hang it up and let America be America!

I would love to see McCain take the Huckabee challenge, but I don't think he will, because he's scared he might just give the people the nudge to push himself away even further. McCain is out of touch with the Republican party, and should have been on the DEM ticket, but he couldn't stand the competition with people who might actually have the nerve to use his past against him.

Posted by: choosewisely | Feb 26, 2008 4:44:43 PM

Commander, I have the upmost respect for Duncan Hunter, but he was never my guy.

Second choice, perhaps. Why someone so strong on national security and immigration would endorse the pathetically weak Huckster is beyond me.

Why should McCain bother with a debate? The race is over. Everybody in America except the Huckster and his blind lemming followers knows it.

Go home.

Posted by: bigred | Feb 26, 2008 5:30:26 PM

If you ask me, it's the news media that killed Huckabee's chances by giving McCain so much coverage from the get go and pronouncing him the Republican "winner" weeks ago.

Posted by: soldoutbeliever | Feb 26, 2008 7:20:39 PM

bigred

DH's has national security street cred. DH worried about the the Dem Congress and open the borders.

Maybe he knows the score about McShamnesty. An he says Huck is the real deal.

Seems to me that you may be Harboring a Hurtful grudge against Humble Huck.

Explain to me how offering scholarships and in-state tuition to illegals doesn't invite more illegals to come here.

Posted by: bigred | Feb 26, 2008 8:23:51 PM

Wakeup America! Not the gimmicks or the puppet. Vote for Huckabee.

Posted by: military man | Feb 26, 2008 9:44:49 PM

bigred

There is a difference between being a Gov and being Pres. But Huck can't seal the Arkansas border to keep out illegals and the jayhawk riffraff. He had to play the hand dealt to him. And he did it well ... so says DH.

Huck's got conservatism, but he also got compassion in his heart.

Posted by: The Commander Guy | Feb 27, 2008 8:58:08 AM

bigred, if you get clear facts, Huckabee as Governor, not President, helped with tuition for the CHILDREN of illegal immagrants. Not the illegals immigrant ADULTS, themselves, the children brought into this world in America. Illegals getting into this country are due to faulty Federal patrol, not the Governor of one state. Hope this helps. Huckabee for President 08!

Posted by: bittersweet4u | Feb 27, 2008 10:17:20 AM

Huckabee is a winner and Romney is a quitter and McCain is disrespecting independants by not agreeing to debate. So McCain will be a loser ha ha ha ha ha ha! I was one of the independent that gave Ronald Reagan his victory. McCain won't get my vote if he wont debate and show what stuff he is made of.
