Hillary Clinton Calls NY Times Story About Her Husband's Business Deal 'Inaccurate'

February 03, 2008 11:09 AM

ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton was questioned extensively on Sunday about a New York Times story that claimed former President Clinton used his influence with Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev to help a business associate get a uranium deal. The friend later contributed 31 million dollars to the Clinton foundation, the Times reported this week.

Appearing on "Fox News Sunday", Sen. Clinton claimed the story was very one-sided and "an inaccurate description of what actually occurred."

She added, "Let me set the record straight. He went to sign an agreement with the government to provide low-cost drugs for HIV/AIDS, a growing problem in central Asia. While he was there, he met with opposition leaders, and certainly spoke out about the hopes that we have to have a good relationship with that country."

Clinton did not directly answer whether the deal was a quid pro quo, but instead sought to make it clear she does not support the anti-Democratic leader Nazarbayev.

"I think it is clear that I will stand on my own two feet and I will say what I believe and I will be a president who pursues policies that I think are in the best interest of our country," the Democratic presidential frontrunner said.

Asked by moderator Chris Wallace if it would be confusing that the former president is conducting business and making statement that are out of step with her polices, Clinton stressed her belief that the U.S. has to use both "carrots and sticks" to influence nation's like Kazakhstan. "We have a lot of interests in that part of the world with natural resources and trying to make sure there's a bulwark against spreading extremism.."

Over the course of the Democratic campaign, Sen. Clinton has been dogged by questions about what role her husband would play in a Hillary Clinton-lead government.

But she signaled on Sunday that her White House would be in order. "I will seek advice from wise people, including him, but at the end of the day I know very well that the weight of decision making falls on the president."

Yet another Clinton scandal. Ahhh, feels like 1995 already!!

How can you be "ready on Day 1" if you're defending yourself from old baggage?

Posted by: dionysus | Feb 3, 2008 11:44:47 AM

WHAT about his partner the Sheik of Dubai calling for the destruction of Israel in 2002.
And Bill's involvement with that same Sheik in business dealings?

Posted by: Tad Dickson | Feb 3, 2008 11:45:12 AM

what about the massive contributions that have come to her campaign from Dubai? This would have been an easy story to kill, Get Bill on camera and he can say that " He did NOT have financial relations that involved exchanging uranium." Oh wait. He has a less than honest track record with denials......

The Republican Dirty Tricksters can bring up all the BS they want, and after it's all over with Hillary will be the next President.. The People of America won't be fooled this time by all you jerks.. the Women of America will be the big surge that puts Hillary in the White House.. GO HILLARY !!! WINNER IN 09 !!!

Even the newspaper that ENDORSED her is now uncovering further scandals to her detriment. This says a lot about Hilary Clinton.

Let's not forget (to quote Jerry of Corpus Christi, on MSNBC) that this is "a woman who gets money from chinese dishwashers, people who are now in jail, people who are being investigated, her husband, who worked for a company that sold lists to people that cleaned out the bank accounts of Alzheimers patients"... and of course, corporations and lobbyists.

The fact that people are actually voting for her is one giant American joke. If she wins, I will be as ashamed of our country as when we made Bush president!

Hey look America it's the new face of white collar crime, The Clintons! Old Slick Willie and Hil have pocketed upwards of 200 million since leaving the White House. Well at least now we know for sure why HilBilly handed the keys to Corporate America while in the White House. Hey and wasn't Hilary the Co-President? The Clintons are EVIL, let's put them out to pasture for good! Go Obama!

Posted by: geddesman | Feb 3, 2008 1:09:26 PM

More years of investigations. America wants to read the Wgite House years papers that the Clintons still won't release. Why? Because it would hurts Hillary's chances of becoming President. I'm sure that is what the Republicans will use to win in November. All it takes is one maid or gardener or intern to come forward with claims of abuse or odd behaviour not becoming a President to swing voters their way.

Posted by: Ed | Feb 3, 2008 1:09:52 PM

Congrats Chris Wallace . .You at least tried to get her to answer. No one else has really asked her this week. A chilling preview of things to come: HRC trying to talk about something she is doing and the conversation is about what her husband is doing. We don't need this, American and it will be dangerous for our future if the Clintons return . .GO OBAMA!

Posted by: linda | Feb 3, 2008 1:14:52 PM

She is lying again. Bill caught red handed again.

Wake up America...she dances around the question on her vote for the war...won't say she is wrong. She dances around the issue of how to enforce her mandated health care...fines or wages garnished She dances around how she will change the Bush/Clinton/Clinton/Bush/Bush dynasty...she's a woman

NO MORE CLINTONS FOR GOD'S SAKE; NO MORE OF THEM PERIOD.

Posted by: A Texan for Obama | Feb 3, 2008 1:20:46 PM

Clinton foundation has nothing to do with her campaign. Obama's shrills will make this into a big deal, but it's a huge non-story.

Posted by: Jack | Feb 3, 2008 1:29:14 PM

Most people I know wouldn't let a person who Lies Under Oath, or a proven Sexual Pervert in their own home, but there are still those who would put someone like this right back in the White House?
Might I remind you folks, the Clinton's started their administration with a Democratic majority in the House, the Seante, and we had a Democratic President. By the time the Clinton's antics had run their course, we lost control of the House, the Senate, and unltimately the Presidency.
It was because of Bill, and Hillary's actions that we were told we had no Morales, and rightly so, thus values were thrust into the spotlight.
We need a change different from anything we've ever seen before. OBAMA '08

There he goes again!!! Let's put term limit on Clintons--No 3rd term for the Oval Office. Billary put our nation in the various scandals. Bill is now seeking for 3rd term for the Oval Office. It really feels like 1995 again !!! Same old politics and same old scandals of corruption. We are smarter this time. No more Clintons. I am willing to give Obama a chance! Thanks.

Posted by: Sch | Feb 3, 2008 1:39:41 PM

You guys, wise up! If you pay attention during the debates, you will experience a sense of security and confidence in Hillary that Obama can only dream of. She's got the facts nailed down, she's moderate, and she's human - we don't need an idol, we need someone, like her, who can instill confidence in our own potential. Obama talks a good talk, but try holding his feet to the fire, and you'll get bluster and obfuscation. Sorry nobama for us!

Posted by: Susan | Feb 3, 2008 1:41:59 PM

Oh...Uhhhhh...I get it Hillary...you and Bill get the carrots and the rest of the world gets the sticks. No shame in either of them.

Posted by: Marie | Feb 3, 2008 2:08:39 PM

Don't worry, I'm sure they'll make up for it after they give her the coronation, er... I mean, election. Big media always gets what it want's in the end.

The Clinton's only excuse for the past 35 years: everything they say about us is innacurate, they hate us, they want to bring us down, if they would have some dignity they (BOTH) should step off this campaign and hand it in to Sen.Obama, he is changing this country already for good, and also the world!!!

Posted by: carmen | Feb 3, 2008 2:54:42 PM

is this the presidency or the throne, shall we expect Chelsea in 2016 and maybe Jeana Bush in 2024, wher is the crown I want to see it

Posted by: graniteguy | Feb 3, 2008 3:07:57 PM

Don't forget that Obama had nothing to do with the Clinton impeachment. They managed that one all on their own. The main reason George Bush was able to easily get into the White House was because of the impeachment of Bill. Be real, if you care about terrorism, this uranium deal with a guy who had no experience with it will rise again. She would have been better served to say she was unaware of it rather than try to speak about it. She twisted the issue into HIV/AIDS from Uranium (the stuff used to make nuclear weapons). We all will have to live with the aftermath of this shady deal (ie special interests) if they do get back in the White House and the wheels have already turned before she was even sworn in. Bill and Hillary (by acknowledgement) did this on their own using their own judgement. Bill himself said he was severing ties to avoid conflicts of interest only two weeks ago. The problem is a uranium mining deal appears to have succeeded with his influence and now it has been sold to another foreign party. For a substantial amount from which Bill benefited for a $32 million dollar contribution. Be very worried. This is not something you just sweep under the rug and shrug off.

Posted by: Will2008 | Feb 3, 2008 3:11:22 PM

The Clintons can get away with murder and democrats won't care. When the Clintons do something scandalous, the democrats rally around them and cry, "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy." Democrats enjoy how the Clitnons abuse their power. That's why they want to put them back in the White House again.

Posted by: TexBork | Feb 3, 2008 3:26:24 PM

We need a President who can focus on fixing our country's problems and not spend all their time trying to explain why they are "completely innocent" in one scandal after another. I've had enough of the Clintons. Let's move on.It's our country let's take it back.

Posted by: Janet | Feb 3, 2008 3:29:07 PM

Bill is addicted to worming his way into the George Soros' global power club, and like Soros will use his foundation, Hillary's election, and third party "bank shots" to raise enormous amounts of money by selling influence and access.

With the general election coming, he is rapidly harvesting cash and getting it out of sight. He's moving it into the foundation he controls and the Clinton Global Initiative. He is also severing sketchy ties as fast as possible (Burkle, etc) knowing there will be enormous scrutiny. Once "Hillary wins" he will be unstoppable, super rich and a player in The Club at last. Retribution, that's where it's at.

Keep in mind that the definition of a con artist is someone who can perfectly imitate the actions of an honest person.

I agree with James Brown's post. So many of the posts I read are from folks supporting Hillary because things were so 'wonderful' during their time in the WH. If things were so 'wonderful', Gore should have been a shoe-in for Pres in 2000. But he lost (albeit by a narrow margin). Even without voter fraud, the election should not even have been close. But an awful lot of Independents voted against the Democrats because of the Clintons and the shennanigans that went on during their administration. This election in November is the Democrats to lose. And they will with the Clintons as their candidates. And I don't care what line Hillary is feeding you, she, by her own admission, sat in on White House meetings when she was First Lady (her experience??), so what makes you think that Bill won't be doing the same. Term #3

Posted by: matter of fact | Feb 3, 2008 4:40:55 PM

One fundimental thing being proven throughout this entire process which is bewildering to say the least!

Anyone really know who Obama is, not in things he says, but in things he avoids answering, his history, his core supporters, his background, his lies?

Republicans know all about him and this small issue isn't anywhere close to what they will unleash if he is the candidate they go against for the Nov vote!

Open your eyes and stop listening to what he wants you to hear and find out who is preaching to you, not what is being preached to you, you won't like what you learn!

Republicans will sure expose them and shatter the false hope being stumped!

Who will you blame then, the Clinton's again? Give me a break!

People are so quick to jump to the media. What do you really know about this. Lyndon Johnson was a civil rights activist since FDR and more and signed the civil rights laws in 1964 and 1965. I remember JFK's mistress singing Happy Birthday Mr. President shamelessly in front of the world and his wife. what do you actually know about this. I feel certain you have not done your own research. May I remind you all that we were a prosperous country during the Clinton administration. He was even jokingly refered to as our first black president. How soon we forget. We Americans are certainly fickle. And socially behind the world!

Posted by: Pat | Feb 3, 2008 7:04:26 PM

All I can say is bring back the Clintons. GOOD TIMES AND PROSPERITY! A cloned goat would be better than what we have now OR any other republican. If you think the right wing will manufacture scandals about the Clintons just wait for the Obama scandals. At least, Hillary knows how to handle the garbage from the right. Obama is still on the learning curve.

Posted by: Eric | Feb 3, 2008 7:39:28 PM

Pat: Maybe YOU should do some research, too. Jackie was not present when Marilyn sang Happy Birthday to JFK.
It will be interesting to see how Hillary fixes the unemployment problem brought about partially by Mr. Bill's selling our jobs overseas with his NAFTA. Oh, yeh, things were 'wonderful' under Clintons allright.
And Eric, I agree wholeheartedly with you about Bush. I just don't think Hillary will beat McCain. Been there, done that, and a lot of Independents AND even some Democrats really HATE the Clintons. She won't beat McCain!

Posted by: matter of fact | Feb 3, 2008 8:03:08 PM

Notice Hillary did not say they are untrue or a lie. Just inaccurate.

So the story is true but the dollar amount is off by maybe a $1.

Good times and prosperity from the Clintons? Get ready for another 4-8 years of red vs. blue, nasty, business as usual politics of fear, smear, lies, and distortions. These people have lied to us over and over and over again. Now we have Bill Clinton - the potential first laddie - making deals with dictators contrary to Hillary's position. I'm baffled what Dems are thinking by supporting the Clintons for a 3rd term after the first two proved to be so divisive.

Posted by: EddyNewHope | Feb 3, 2008 8:27:44 PM

Bill5321: Just as she says that SHE is running this campaign, not Bill. That SHE is responsible for what she does as President (if, heaven help us all, she is the nominee), not Bill. She never did say that he wouldn't be a co-president. She sat in on meetings as First Lady (she admitted it) so why anyone would think Bill won't too, is beyond me. It sickens me to think those 2 will be the ones to 'return prestige to America'.What a joke.

There is nothing good that can come from another clinton in the White House.

""I agree, Hillary for President !!!Bill and Hillary's co-presidency was the best modern presidency ever. They have the three best accomplishments of any other modern president. Why in 1994, after just two short years in office, they gave us the first Republican Senate since 1986. The 8 seat swing gave the Republicans solid control of the Senate at 53-47.Even more astounding, in 1994, again after just two short years in office, they also gave us the first Republican House since 1954 !!! That was the first time in 40 years. It was a 54 seat swing giving the Republicans a huge majority 230- 204 !The swing in 12 Governorships in 1994 was an added bonus. Now it took them a little longer, until 2000 and 2004 but they also gave us a two term Republican President. The Republican congress managed to control the purse strings and helped to bring the nation it's first 'budget surplus' in decades. {In quotes, because there was still a lot of funny Washington math going on to claim a surplus}."" Remember truth is stranger than fiction. So in summary, please vote for Hillary so that we can have a Republican House and Senate for 2010. If any of those Republican candidates say that they can do that too, don't believe them. None of them even have the experience of sexual relations with a Goldwater girl. And none of them have campaigned for someone who voted against the Civil Rights Act. Those Republican candidates don't even inhale. Beware of that Barack Obama. He's threatening to unite the country at a time of global economic and political crisis.

For the Obama supporters:

1) The New York Times on its front page explains how Sen. Barack Obama told voters he stood up to the nuclear power industry and how he passed a bill to require reports of any radioactive leaks after hearing from his constituents. But The Times discovers, after a lengthy examination, that the bill was watered down after meeting with Exelon, the company whose plants created the issue and whose key executives are big contributors and bundlers to his campaign. Answering written questions for the NY Times, the campaign, in the words of the paper, never "directly" explains why Sen. Obama would tell voters he passed a bill that in fact was not passed and did not become law.

2) The Chicago Tribune features a similar story on a different topic. While Sen. Obama on the stump tells people about the plight of Maytag workers who lost their jobs, ("Obama's fundraising collides with his rhetoric") the Tribune documents that the union covering those workers believes they got no help from the Senator, who was again taking significant contributions and bundling from one of the company's directors and biggest investors.

3) And yesterday there was an AP story where Senator Obama told the voters of Idaho: ''And then there are people who say, 'Well, he doesn't believe in the Second Amendment,' even though I come from a state -- we've got a lot of hunters in downstate Illinois. And I have no intention of taking away folks' guns.'' But he didn't disclose to those voters, as the AP said that "he does support gun control and has a record of voting for it in the Illinois Senate. He backed limiting handgun purchases to one a month, but he made no attempts to ban them." When he originally ran for the state legislature 12 years ago, he filled out a questionnaire saying he ''supported banning the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns.'' He gave the voters of Idaho no indication whatsoever of either his record in the State Senate or his prior views on the questionnaire

Go Hillary!!!

What gets me more then anything is the women that think they have to vote for Clinton because she is a women. Hillary is a very poor example of a strong woman.

Maria , Michelle , Caroline ,Oprah

That is what strong woman look like. They do the right and honorable thing , even when its hard and maybe un-popular.

Lets face it , Hillary Clinton divides this country worse then George Bush , and The "CLINTONS" take the word scandal to a whole new level.

If your happy with a House divided and a do nothing congress , i can understand why your voting for more Clinton scandals in the "People's White House".

But if you want to see our elected leaders come together and actually get something done for this country , I HAVE ONE WORD FOR YOU.

OBAMA

Can't believe the republicans are trying to bring up scandals after 8 years of Bush, the most corrupt administration in history. Compared to Bush, the Clintons are saints.

Posted by: Rick | Feb 4, 2008 8:22:48 AM

But wait, there's more:
Scandals out the wazoo
Empty pocketbooks for those earning over 100K
And a country so divided it may never recover.

Bill sent jobs overseas with his NAFTA
Bill did not do what he should have after at least 5 terrorist actions while he was Prez
Bill disgraced his office and lied under oath after swearing to uphold the Constitution.
Bill made a laughing stock out of the American presidency.

Oh, sure, let's elect them again. Let the fun begin all over again!

Does anyone else tend to ignore news stories that are about Bill Clinton?

Posted by: LongT | Feb 4, 2008 3:35:13 PM

Another story about what old Bill has been up to. I am ashamed to say I voted for the guy. People, wake up, the Clintons personal net worth went from 1 million to 20 to 50 million in the years they have been out of office.(They won't give a figure.) Just like in this story where 31 million was given to their foundation coincidentally after Bill visited and a uranium deal was struck, the Clintons owe a lot of very wealthy people. Just like Hillary has taken a lot of big contributions to this campaign from health insurance companies, the drug companies, etc. she will owe them a lot more than she will owe ordinary Americans. Any health insurance plan we will be forced to buy under her won't be a deal for us. We don't need a third term of Clintons in charge. They did a few good things, but did more bad things that are biting us now, like NAFTA, the Chinese trade agreement which has messed up our trade balance and resulted in a great loss of manufacturing jobs here, while giving the Chinese government so much spare cash they are loaning our government big money to deal with our deficit. No more third terms from the Bushes or Clinton families.

Posted by: Lydia | Feb 4, 2008 4:26:03 PM

Thanks, Martin for posting that story on the truth behind Hillary's much touted '35 year' working for us. Now it seems the truth is 1 year working for a non-profit for kids, then 15 working for a big law firm for corporations and sitting on corporate boards, like Wal-Mart at the same time her law firm represented them. Add in her time as a governor's wife and then president's wife and then actually serving the public as a senator since 2000, makes her 35 years seem more like 8 years serving by my count.

Posted by: Lydia | Feb 4, 2008 5:11:42 PM

You go Pat and Sam Lim. Right on!!! And the media very cleverly left out the fact that Hillary also mentioned very clearly that our dear VP Dick Cheney also praised Nazarhayev...the media is EVER SO READY to besmirch the Clintons. People have forgotten halcyon days of the Clinton Presidency where there was SURPLUS not because of default by the previous Bush govt. or even our dear departed Reagen..who was the nemesis of the middle class.
