Limbaugh: McCain Out to Destroy GOP for 2000 S.C. Defeat
February 04, 2008 4:13 PM
ABC News' Jennifer Parker Reports: Continuing his attack on Republican frontrunner Sen. John McCain, conservative radio show host Rush Limbaugh devoted a significant portion of his radio show Monday to urging conservatives not to vote for the senator in tomorrow's Super Tuesday contests.
For weeks, Limbaugh has been on the attack against McCain, branding the Arizona senator a "liberal" and suggesting he would destroy the Republican Party.
On his radio show Monday Limbaugh said that if McCain is elected president, he would destroy the Republican party by working with Democrats to pass liberal legislation.
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
"He's going to reach out to Democrats in Congress," Limbaugh said, citing "McCain -Kennedy" and "McCain -Feingold" as examples of McCain-sponsored bipartisan legislation.
"This is how he's going to get even with Republicans for defeating him in South Carolina in 2000," Limbaugh said.
"The Republican Congress will effectively be neutered."
In 2000, McCain lost South Carolina to George W. Bush, effectively killing his first presidential bid.
Limbaugh also suggested conservatives should be wary of media endorsements of McCain. McCain has won the endorsement of the New York Times.
"It was just six months ago that if a candidate was endorsed by the liberal media we were instantly suspicious of them," Limbaugh said.
Now he said, "we've got drive-by media organizations having orgasms about McCain."
The conservative radio host also lambasted Fred Barnes, editor of the conservative magazine The Weekly Standard for an editorial titled "Let's Grow Up Conservatives" that urges conservatives to give McCain a chance if he continues to reach out to them.
"Fred, you used to be one of us!" Limbaugh said. "Now you seem to be all for Republicans having its liberal wing too."
Limbaugh also suggested McCain is winning over anti-abortion advocates, despite McCain's long-held record of opposing abortion rights.
"It's pro-choicers who are voting for McCain. That's who liberals are!" Limbaugh said.
McCain's chief Republican rival former Gov. Mitt Romney aired a campaign ad today on Limbaugh's radio program attacking McCain's record on taxes and immigration.
"John McCain, he's been in Washington a long time," the announcer says.
While Limbaugh has not endorsed Romney, he has been urging his listeners for weeks not to vote for McCain at a time when McCain and Romney have argued over who is the true conservative.
While Romney has argued that he is a "Ronald Reagan" conservative, many of his earlier positions on abortion, same-sex marriage and gun rights while he was governor of Massachusetts leave many conservatives doubtful of his candidacy.
McCain, meanwhile, has always had a difficult relationship with the conservative wing of the Republican party.
Before the South Carolina primary, McCain's 95-year-old mother, Roberta, urged conservative to "hold their nose" and vote for her son.
Limbaugh's opinions appeared to rub off on one caller Monday named Bruce.
"I'm not a mind-numb robot and I'm not going to vote for John McCain!" the caller said.
Limbaugh's outspoken rejection of McCain led former Republican Senate leader Bob Dole to write him a letter today that was sent to media today by the McCain campaign.
"Rush," Dole wrote, "I was the Republican Leader from January 1985 until I left the Senate voluntarily in June 1996. I worked closely with Senator McCain when he came to the Senate in 1987 until I departed. I cannot recall a single instance when he did not support the Party on critical votes.
"Whoever wins the Republican nomination will need your enthusiastic support. Two terms for the Clintons are enough," Dole wrote.

Has McCain ever co-sponsored a bill with a Republican? And if he does not win the Republican Nomination, is it too late for him to consider running on the Democratic ticket? McInsane can't even unify his own party, so how does he expect to unify the country, especially when 70% of the country is against the War in Iraq.."my friends".

Nice to see Mitt's investment in Rush's syndicator has paid off so handsomely. He's not dumb enough to criticize his BOSS!!! Neither is Hannity, or O'Reilly, or Medved, or any other "clear channell" hack owned by big-pocket Mitt. I can't believe so-called "conservatives" haven't been able to figure this out. But then again they're just looking for somebody to tell them what to do in the first place. I'm embarrased for the Republican party when three Democracts are chosen at the expense of the REAL conservatives. But hey, if we want the White House, we have to act like Democrats, right? Well then, if that be the case, why run in the first place? It's time these Democrats LEAVE the party and run on their true LIBERIAL principles somewhere else! The Republican party, as well as their chances at being elected would vastly improve overnight!

I notice McCain not toting his amnesty bill attempt as one of his conservative creditials. I'm sitting this one out.

Poor Rush - the world has passed him by and he can't stand it. What a loser! ROFL
Posted by: Brickler | Feb 4, 2008 4:42:50 PM
McCain's senate record mirrors Hillary's over the past couple of years. Why should Republicans rally McCain who has reached across the aisle so many times his flesh is permanently grafted to the dingy blue carpet? McCain should drop out of the race and run as a Democrat.

If McCain is really going to destroy the GOP then he's got my vote. I don't see the downside here.
Posted by: Karen O. | Feb 4, 2008 4:48:17 PM
Well now, just because of this blubber mouth's comments, I'll have to vote for Mr. McCain.
Posted by: Lou | Feb 4, 2008 4:49:22 PM
Poor Rush - his party left him back in the dark ages. I knew cigar smoking was bad for the lungs, appartently it can damage one's brain as well. I hope the GOP does nominate McCain - then whichever party wins at least we will have a President who can walk and chew gum at the same time. Anyone, ANYONE is better than Bush.
Posted by: AA Michael | Feb 4, 2008 4:50:26 PM
the republicans don't need mccain to destroy their party... it's almost a thing of beauty to see the republican party implode in on itself like the world trade centers... it's also entertaining to see all the infighting amoungst the republicans... they are all bullies (except for ron paul, who is actually a true republican, and not a greedy corporate capitalist or religious nutjob hiding within the republican party)
Posted by: earthisnotflat | Feb 4, 2008 4:50:52 PM
Why thank you, Mr. Limbaugh! Now that it's clear that you don't believe Sen. McCain to be sufficiently conservative, the rest of may rest assured that he's not another insane megalomaniac. If you can't stand him, it can only mean he is a man of moral principles and political ethics. You're a perfect reverse compass for those of us who use our minds.

Why does this remind me of that scene in the wizard of oz where the wicked witch melts down? Somebody get that man some oxycontin! Stat! This is the womanish hysteria of the right wing of the Republican party that knows where they are bound -- back under those rocks where they were before the 1980s. It's almost Morning in America again! Oh wait, that's been used...

Mitt Romney has been fighting 1 on 4 for this whole election. I am glad to see the conservative talk shows giving him 100% backing. McCain, Guiliani and Huckabee have all proven that they are in it together to get McCain elected and themselves jobs. If McCain wins he will not have all of his little helpers doing his dirty work in the general, he will actually have to be accountable to his lackluster record. Frankly, I am surprised Romney has endured as well as he has against the teamup. This is the reason that I migrated to him as my candidate, he has heart.

I always thought that social conservatives would be the dead weight holding the party back in the 20th century. Old school conservatives on spending, size and scope of limited government and butting out of people's lives could make a resurgence but they, unfortunately, are demonized as liberals or liberal sympathizers. What's wrong with being pragmatic?? Limbaugh needs to adapt to the 21st century. The large majority of young people are quite put off by the far right. In time, these young people WILL become the establishment.

AMNESTY-JOHN is the poster old-man for MANDATORY age limits for ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS. Just think how embarrassing it will be for Americans when AMNESTY-JOHN wets himself -or worse- in meetings with leaders of other countries. It would be just as bad as having a total moron representing America, and EVERYBODY knows how humiliating that has been.
One important thing to note - AMNESTY-JOHN's multimillionaire, beer-distributor wife refuses to provide even a penny to his campaign. Smart, very smart. Perhaps she doesn't like his positions either!
If AMNESTY-JOHN gets the nomination we can change the name of the Republican Party to the "Democratic-Lite Party". Our two party system will then consist of Tweedle Dumb and Tweedle Dumber!

This is great entertainment! I love watching the obese, drug addicted neocon get his panties (literally) in a wad because McCain is going to win the nomination. Hey Bozo, the country doesn't buy your fascist rhetoric anymore! He should really relax. No matter who the Repub. nominee might be, he will be TROUNCED by the Democratic nominee in the fall. Just thank King George.
Posted by: dano | Feb 4, 2008 4:55:05 PM
Ok, to be "fair and balanced", if you're going to keep making desperate drug references to Rush, then you have to do the same to Mrs. McCain. For some reason, THAT never gets mentioned.
Posted by: Sarah L | Feb 4, 2008 4:56:13 PM
Someone needs to duct tape Rush. He is just an idiot with bias that he must smear all over TVland whether anyone wants to hear him or not. He is sooo passe! Get him off the air.
Posted by: JLW | Feb 4, 2008 4:56:16 PM
Rush wouldn't know a Goldwater Conservative even if they slapped him in the face.
He's so far right that 90% of what were the honorable conservatives of old are too liberal for him.
And if Rush would watch all the news rather than just the Tabloid reporting from Foxnews, he'd realize that it was GW that destroyed the Republican party.
Posted by: Roy | Feb 4, 2008 4:58:54 PM
Bush already destroyed the GOP with his massive incompetence. McCain and Romney are just fighting over the rubble. LOL
Posted by: Dale Davis | Feb 4, 2008 4:59:07 PM
Limbaugh and the other so called conservative commentators are responsible for McCain being the front runner.
They unleashed every weapon they had to smear and knock down Mike Huckabee, the only true conservative in the race, when he he was the front runner.
They chose to get behind the flip flopping Romney. Republicans don't want such an unstable person to be their party's nominee.
Social conservatives should realize that Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and the other so called conservative commentators are Christian haters and are not our friends. They have been using Christians for years to get our votes and sell their books. It's time to wake up and quit listening to them.
Posted by: Billy10 | Feb 4, 2008 5:02:06 PM
Honk if you think we should send Rush to Guantanamo. HONK!
Posted by: Charity | Feb 4, 2008 5:04:18 PM
Rush doesn't realize that it was the very minor neo-con wing of the Republicans that took over the WHOLE Republican party and used it to leverage their ideas.
Now the few sensible ones are getting the party back and he can't take it. Maybe if he'd shut up, some of us Republican of old might come back from the Democratic party. But so far, even a small amount of news time from Rush acting like he's the mouth piece of the whole Republican party and saying what's best for the party is still too much for me.

Old Mush LameBrain is a joke.. He's still mad a McCain for calling him a "CLOWN"..
I sure that the OXZY., and the Viagra is still taking him to highs & lows.. Such is life..

I feel sorry for anyone that follows or thinks like Rush. It makes me cringe to hear him talk. He is a purveyor of hate & separation. He helped Repubs lose in 2006 with his Michael J Fox condemnation. If I were Republicans I would denounce this fool. I do not understand why people listen to him. Yikes!
Posted by: hobojo | Feb 4, 2008 5:07:31 PM
Take a deep breath, snap into reality - its going to be McCain vs. Hillary/Obama - He has an 83% conservative voting record, and is an unquestioned War Hero - All the personal insults are quite nauseating
Posted by: Chill Pill | Feb 4, 2008 5:07:54 PM
The GOP is in full meltdown and the rest of the country is laughing their heads off. Nobody cares what Republicans think or say about anything anymore because we HATE Republicans now! Good riddance, losers! You deserve it!
Posted by: Shelly Tate | Feb 4, 2008 5:14:36 PM
Rush Limbaugh is an idiot. So is Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham. Laura Ingraham will vote for Hillary over McCain. That shows you her true colors. What sore losers.
Posted by: Randy Risner | Feb 4, 2008 5:16:08 PM
"I'm not a mind-numb robot and I'm not going to vote for John McCain!" the caller said."
Yeah, you're just gonna let some fat blowhard like Rush Limbaugh tell you who NOT to vote for. If I were this person, I'd be more concerned about being an idiot than I would being a robot. Letting Limbaugh dictate whom you vote for is a sure sign of mental weakness!
Posted by: Tanner | Feb 4, 2008 5:17:36 PM
Funny thing. Romney is Rush's BOSS. He owns the compnay Rush works for. Rush is so far off base with just about everything he says that listening to him has become a fun thing to do when you need a good laugh. I'm not kidding. As a conservative, I can tell you, Rush is from another planet. Bush destroyed the Republican Party for a lotta years to come. Period. End of story.

I have been holding my endorsement over this never ending election season..I mean how long has this thing been going on...for 14 months by my reckoning...I guess everyone wants to seet ol' GW out so bad...esp. those in the old line media. Hucksterbee is a fool, McLame is too Liberal. Clinton is a closet, if not an out right Marxist, Obama is an empty skirt. I'm going with Romney.

Probably with the Republicans is their no longer Conservatives of old.
Thats the Fiscal Conservatives and Social Liberals that were the Republican party.
These neo-cons are spend, spend, spend. And don't car about the long term future of this country. They are more like what they accuse the Liberals of being which makes no sense at all.
Posted by: Roy | Feb 4, 2008 5:22:43 PM
If McCain promises to destroy the GOP, I will definitely vote for him. That would make him the greatest patriot in American history, to destroy the party of evil, divisiveness and hatred!
Posted by: Kartrout | Feb 4, 2008 5:23:06 PM
Rush has lost it. Anyone that would listen to him these days has to be crazy. I'm a conservative Christian Republican who is ready for someone like McCain. He is willing to fight for what is right and not always go with what the radical right wingers want. Go McCain....I still wish Condi was running, but who knows what Rush would have said about her.

I love that stupid rightwingers are all hung up on illegal immigration and other stupid non-issues, while the rest of the country is trying to fix the messes that Republicans made in the first place. Romney is the next Ronald Reagan. He is the most capable leader in this race. Romney exudes integrity, decency, leadership, and is a great communicator who will get things done. McCain is a liberal who teamed up with Ted Kennedy to grant amnesty to 20 million illegal aliens, voted AGAINST the middle class tax cuts, and couldn’t care less about defending our borders. McCain will never win in November if he is nominated, and he is just another dishonest Washington politician who would maintain business as usual if he did. Romney can hold his own in a debate (without telling bald-faced lies, like McCain) and could handily defeat Hillary in November. Unfortunately, a vote for Huckabee on Super Tuesday is a vote for McCain….and a vote for McCain is ultimately a vote for Hillary.
Posted by: Derek | Feb 4, 2008 5:33:43 PM
Conservative Repulicans against the lying and smear campaigns of the so called Conservative Rush and Ann. These people are a disgrace to our party and should never be called conservative. They are radical in all of the beliefs just like the idiot Pat Buchanan. If you really want to get down to they are no better than Michael Moore, Rosie and Ted Kennedy.
Posted by: mowens | Feb 4, 2008 5:34:05 PM
Do Republicans believe in thinking for themselves or is that a foreign idea? Do you always look to someone to "lead" the way and tell you what to do or think? If Mitt is your man and Hillary is the nominee, you will lose big time. If McCain is your guy and Hillary is the nominee, your party will win.
Not that I care about your party, I just find it somewhat interesting you all are falling for what some fat a--, overweight pill popper is selling you.
I will step out of the way now and let you dummies hate on a war vet in favor of a pretty boy to dam- good to serve!!

I have a friend who gave me a bumper sticker after the 2000 election. It said "Vote Repubican, it's easier than thinking."
I believe this Bumper Sticker for created for all those who let Rush do their thinking for them.

"Romney is the next Ronald Reagan. He is the most capable leader in this race. Romney exudes integrity, decency, leadership, blah, blah, blah, blah!"
So you think Mitt's the 'next Ronald Reagan, huh? Would you like to know what Mitt said about dear president Reagan during his 1994 debate with Ted Kennedy when he was running for his Senate seat?
"I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I'm not trying to return to Reagan-Bush."
--Mitt Romney
But don't take my word for it, look it up for yourself. There's a great video on Youtube where you can actually SEE and HEAR Mitt say this. Give me a break!

"I'm not a mind-numb robot and I'm not going to vote for John McCain!"
Oh, that's rich..."I'm not a mindless droid, I'm going to vote for who you want me to, Rush...right? Is that OK with you, bug guy?"
That is the embodiment of what's wrong with the Republican party: toe the line or we'll bully you out of the club.

Conservatives need to get over the fact that their day is DONE! They had control of Congress and K Street from '94 - '06 and they were done in by their own greed and corruption. America has seen enough to know that the right wing's views are well outside the views of mainstream America. See ya!
Posted by: Pete | Feb 4, 2008 5:49:02 PM
Don't buy it folks. This is a long term strategy from Rove, he's trying to get Lefties and moderates to think that McCain is ok to vote for so that McCain can beat the Dems in November. This has nothing to do with the primaries. There are folks that don't like Hillary or Obama but still want to vote for a moderate, they are trying to put McCain into that spot.
Posted by: Chris Simmons | Feb 4, 2008 5:50:04 PM
Voting for McCain is like voting for Bob Dole. Why would Rush listen to a loser like Bob Dole?
Fact is that McCain is old, a Washington insider that won't motivate people to vote. He is another senator like Hillary and Obama.
We need someone younger and smarter to run the country. Mitt Romney is the most qualified person. Top graduate from Harvard university in law and business. Has ran a business successfully and will focus on the economy rather than the Iraq war or some other country.

Its sad that Rush, who so desperately needs revival of his career, would attempt to do so at the cost of the only real hope the Republicans have to retain the presidency. When McCain does, he will be the toast of the Republican Party.

Rush "I-have-a-prescription-for-that-somewhere-officer" Limbaugh doesn't want to see McCain win the nomination because he's the ONLY one that couldd defeat Hillary or Obama! Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter, et al, WANT HILLARY TO WIN THE WHITE HOUSE! Think about it, when the Clintons were in office, that when Rush's audience was the biggest! He offered them their 'hate-for-the-day' where they could tune in a revel in all the bad things doushes like Limbaugh had to spew! 7 years of G.W. Bush's disasterous administration have turned a lot of their listeners away in disgust and four more years of any Republican will just bring those ratings even lower. Criipes, it's so obvious...what can't some of you sheep see that?
Posted by: George | Feb 4, 2008 6:05:10 PM
Romney is the best candidate on either side, and he did an outstanding job here in Massachusetts, accomplishing more than most governors have in longer terms. He stood up for pro-life and marriage against a liberal legislature consistently in Massachusetts...check out his record on FRC. It's very strong and conservative. He can beat either democrat. The liberal media is hoping that 72 year old McCain will be nominated so he can be crushed in the general election. McCain showed his true colors in the most recent debate. For a strong Republican candidate with integrity and immense capability, intelligence, communication skills and leadership, vote for Mitt Romney on Super Tuesday!!!

The Republicans will lose for becoming big-government Democrats. We can have perpetual war AND tax cuts! Jesus, that $800 goes real far compared to the $800 billion the contractors are getting for giving our troops untreated water to drink and bathe in, on top of the $100 coke vending machines, and the mold infested tents they're forced to sleep in. If you care about the troops BRING THEM HOME!!! Nothing else will do them justice. If you can't understand that, then you don't know a soldier who has served, or worse... you just don't care.

AJ, don't confuse rightwingers with Republicans. They control the party, but are not a majority of Republicans. Most Republicans are moderate and reasonable--holding traditional conservative values:
*Small government
*Limited interference in small business
*No interference in state-specific issues.
*Strong defense (not necessarily massive spending)
The right wing has given us:
*The largest gov't bloating since the LBJ War on Poverty
*Interference in business--including bailing out an industry that speculated TOO much
*Involves the country in a war in the wrong country.
Someday we will return to traditional conservative values (and likewise, someday there will be a return to normal liberal values rather than those of those on the extremist left). Then we can return to core American values and discussions.
I suspect we need to get the Me Generation out of power before that can take place.

It's idiots like Rush that ruin our country and keep things partisan. He puts the Republican agenda above Americas. This is exactly the kind of of crap the vast majority of people in this country are sick of. He is Un-American . . . there, I said it.

defense. The author of this blog should
read his own words a little more carefully. What does this mean?
"Limbaugh also suggested McCain is winning over anti-abortion advocates, despite McCain's long-held record of opposing abortion rights. "
If you delete the last word in the
paragraph...maybe it will make sense.

------
don't confuse party lines with conservative (or liberal, for that matter) principles. the chief legislation (feingold and kennedy) that reflects mccain's willingness to "reach across the aisle" has clearly compromised conservative principles. that's the problem.

Back in the 1930's there was a right-wing radio host screaming out over the airwaves to millions of followers each week. He was a HUGE and powerful force against the reforms of FDR and everything he stood for (helping average Americans) and his corporate bosses made him a very rich man. Millions of Americans followed him religiously, and voted exactly how he commanded them to. Anybody out there remember his name? I didn't think so.

I'm with Rush, if we're going to have a liberal president, let's make it a dem. I will enjoy seeing them screw up.

Why all the hate. Aren't we mature enough to rise above this retoric. Rush has been very successful because if his insight, intelligence, and wit. It seems people are envious of success. Just because Rush and Mitt are successful doesn't mean they are not worthy. Some people are fools!

Is Rush back on the oxy-contin? Or just afraid that if McCain's elected his radio show won't be as popular?
Posted by: Tom J | Feb 4, 2008 6:55:37 PM
Hey Rush, why dont you go and pop another pill and shut up already. McCain cannot possibly be worse than the bonehead that weve had in office these past years. its "broken"...time for a change.

Im not voting Rebublican either way, but it is people like Rush that cause me to despise what the party stands for. McCain is a genuine person, a war hero, and has spent his life in service to his country. Limbaugh is an overweight pill popping blow hard who wears makeup to work. You decide.

Is it just me or does McCain remind you of the Snake Lord Voldermort and Huckabee Voldermorts little side kick that helps him regain his power?

Rush pulling a Britney? "McCain is trying to sabatoge the Republican Party because he lost an election in 2000?" OMG. I always thought he was nuts, but know he's proven it for me. And the rest of the world. Must be the meds.

McCain, love him or hate him, is a decorated military veteran who endured the utmost cruelty at the hands of his captors. If McCain becomes president, at least no one can accuse him of being a chickenhawk draft dodger like Limbaugh, Bush, Cheney, yata, yata, yata...
Posted by: Mike | Feb 4, 2008 7:10:39 PM
This is truly bizarre. I don't hate Rush Limbaugh, but I liked him better before he began sounding more like an evangelist than a commentator. But now he seems to have jumped the track. I don't like Old Man McCain either, but it's because he STILL supports Bush's War and because he is TOO OLD to begin the Presidency. What in the world is Rush talking about? McCain will almost surely be the Republican nominee, so who is Rush going to support? Hillary? ABC News carried a portion of Rush's rant against McCain, and I couldn't believe my ears!

Conservatives that are in the Limbaugh mold are not going to win in the general election today or for a long long time, because of trust factor and the track record of such Conservatives in the Republican party to control hidden taxes, spending and the size of the big Federal government.
The Conservatives have failed us on so many levels and their promises mean nothing. Limbaugh is one more example of such failure of the last 7 years.

Remind me what public office that fat loudmouth Rush was ever elected to? That's what I thought... ROFL

Don't think we conservatives don't know why you liberals in the media support McCain. And why you are giving him such favorable coverage.
Posted by: AndyB | Feb 4, 2008 7:26:28 PM
Well, considering that he will bring the troops home in the first 100 years of his presidency, he is at least acknowledging how screwed up his support for this war has been.

McCain is a democrat in republican clothing.
Romney doesn't know what he is. First an independent then a liberal then a conservative. Next???????
Mike Huckabee is the only true conservative in the race.

My,my!! Aren't the Liberals verbal today?? Some of them try so hard to say something really profound.. At least folks like Rush have the guts to say what they think, right out in front of everybody.. Most of you posters here are the typical, classical cowards that infest discussions like this.. You insult and call your betters names, all while enjoying and taking full advantage of not being identifiable. Should Conservatives be concerned about being called names by total cowards??? I think not.... Besides.. Folks like you are not in the majority.. Being the loudest does not make you "the majority". Boy!! Aren't a bunch of you going to "have a cow" when another Conservative takes over the White House??

>>>> Another "Rush" to judgment.
McCain scares RL because he is honest and can get Democratic support on the bills that need to be passed. If he is the Repub nominee, then he's the best the party has to offer. Give him a chance RL and get off your high horse. D
