McCain Adviser Won't Fight Obama
February 13, 2008 6:48 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: On Wednesday, a top adviser to John McCain said more definitively than he has in the past that he will step down from the Arizona senator's presidential campaign if the presumed GOP nominee faces Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in the general election.
"I would simply be uncomfortable being in a campaign that would be inevitably attacking Barack Obama," said McCain adviser Mark McKinnon in an interview with NPR's "All Things Considered." "I think it would be uncomfortable for me, and I think it would be bad for the McCain campaign."
McKinnon, who was a Democrat before serving as President Bush's ad maker in 2000 and 2004, said that he plans to be behind McCain "100 percent" no matter who the Democratic nominee is. He explained, however, that if the Democrats nominate Obama, he will be supporting McCain "from the sidelines."
While saying that he does not agree with Obama on every issue, McKinnon gushed about the Illinois Democrat.
"I met Barack Obama, I read his book, I like him a great deal," said McKinnon. "I disagree with him on very fundamental issues. But I think, as I said, I think it would a great race for the country."
Audio of McKinnon's NPR interview is available here.

McCain needs to fire Mark McKinnon now. He proves himself unreliable. He is a Democrat and will vote that way no matter what he says now

Wow, that is sad when your own advisers don't back you...Too funny!!!!!
Posted by: hahahaha | Feb 13, 2008 7:06:38 PM
Might be a little premature, Byron. Clinton still might come back to win the nomination, and Mark McKinnon doesn't seem to have any qualms campaigning against her.

This piece must be a trick, planted by Democrats to ### off Republicans.
The guy used to be a Democrat, he "supports McCain 100% ...etc" BUT if the Dem Nominee is Barack Hosein Obama, he thinks it would be " bad for McCain.."

These people are gushing about a man who is saying absolutely nothing, but saying it very well. Obama needs to be revealed for what he is, vapor. His veneer is actually very thin, and the Repubs (and the country) need a candidate and a team than can carefully expose him on substance.
Posted by: Andy | Feb 13, 2008 7:18:26 PM
Brilliant move...whatever support Hil had left will evaporate when this gets out! The race against BHO may prove tough, but right now the important thing is to inoculate this country against Clintosis.
Posted by: socal_dirk | Feb 13, 2008 7:19:45 PM
This isn't a surprise. McKinnon announced he was going to do this months ago if Obama became the nominee, and told McCain of this directly from the start, and McCain was fine with it. McKinnon was upfront about this with McCain from Day One and McCain still wanted him to do his media for the primary campaign.
Posted by: Ron | Feb 13, 2008 7:20:38 PM
I notice Senator McCain surrounds himself with people that think like him. Remember, the senator said that he thought Hillary would make a great president. We can't be sure that he is going to vote for himself.

McKinnon is McCain's paid message guy. To say Obama's candidacy is not good for the campaign is not a good message. Hopefully, McCain will fix this fast.

This is the eessential problem with McCain supporters -- they are weak Democrats/weak Republicans. McCain needs to take hold of his ship and can/fire McKinnon for his ambiguous comments.

Posted by: Rick | Feb 13, 2008 7:26:19 PM
That makes no sense. I like Obama too, and disagree with him on fundamental issues as well. Therefore I would work to beat him in November in preference for a candidate that better shares my values. Exactly what is driving Mr. McKinnon's decision here? Sounds like he really doesn't believe in McCain after all. He needs to be let go, post haste.

If McKinnon feels that way, he should do the honorable thing and step down now; if McCain were to fire him, it would be blown out of proportion and used to emphasize McCains temper.
Posted by: jack | Feb 13, 2008 7:29:34 PM
By the way, what if a soldier said he/she will fight al Qaida, but sit out the fight if we go to war with those charming Iranian Rev Guards? That is analagous to what Mark McDemocrat did, and to the message Mark sent to America. McCain needs to exercise leadership now. Fire the dude.

Posted by: irma | Feb 13, 2008 7:37:04 PM
Here is a perfect example of why the current political chaos in the GOP exists. We have a so-called expert in politics who has been advising Bush and then McCain but who swoons over "The Unbearable Lightness of Being Barack" Hussein Obama! What ever happened to the manly ability to discern weak minded fools posing as expert advisors? For the GOP to have relied on this kind of mind illustrates just how morally and intellectually impaired they are.
Posted by: BBJR | Feb 13, 2008 7:38:39 PM
I don't understand what McKinnon is saying. Why would he step down from McCain's campaign if Obama is the nominee? Why is Obama different from Hillary? Is he afraid that the campaigns will inevitably play the race card?
Posted by: confused | Feb 13, 2008 7:45:59 PM
I agreee, McCain should drp-kick McKinnon NOW! I believe in the "white guilt" complex. It's sad, to say the least. What, you can't attack a non-white man running for POTUS for fear of being called a racist!? Thank you, Jesse Jackson. The Dem race IS race-based. Look at the recent polls! I know that there are plenty of mostly young white liberals are voting for Obama, because he's young, good looking a so-called "change-agent" with a preacher's fervor. But, look at the black vote. I think it's primarily raced-based voting. Trouble is Obama has no qualifications or accomplishments to speak of. Obama's just a likable guy with "change" as his main speech buzz word. All hat and no cattle. BTW, he IS the most liberal senator in congress based on voting record & no votes. The lefties love him, the blacks, and the young platform. All with little substance from Obama. I can't believe that it's come to a popularity race contest for POTUS for a lot of Dems and other folks. As polarizing as Bill-ary is, she's far more qualified on day one. We conservatives ought to start thinking about congressional seats, supporting McCain and the presidency in 2012. I'd rather fight McCain on issues while in the White than the alternative: a liberal Dem POTUS AND Congress. Makes me ill at the thought.
Posted by: Davie | Feb 13, 2008 7:49:09 PM
Oh, one other thing, if Hill-ary wins the nomination at the DMC only because of the Super-delegate vote, I guarantee there will be riots in the streets.

As a Conservative, I can't vote for you. You won't be any better for the nation as Obama or Clinton. I will write in Romney. I wish he had stayed in the race. Now we are stuck with a RINO like McAmnesty. Bleccchhhh!

Davie,
Please listen to what I have to say.
You've bought the media's and Hillary's "experience" mantra hook, line and sinker. You've bought the media's line that Obama is all fluff. Did you watch the Democratic debate between Hillary and Obama? I am willing to be my net worth that you did not. That debate was 110% substance, with specifics and details.
Posted by: HumanBeing | Feb 13, 2008 7:57:52 PM
Patronizing racism at its finest, bested only by Obama manipulation of race. Why shouldn't McCain attack Obama? Are African-American so frail that they cannot take on fierce attacks? Of course they're not, but even the slightest suggestion that anyone would question Obama's Purple Unicorn Dream Factory will get out the Sharptons yelling racism. For a minute I thought I could back Obama, but then I realized that he and campaign manipulate race to mute criticism. Even worse for me is the messianic tone of the Obama campaign. Even Huckabee wouldn't dare use religious language the way that Obama does.

I'm guessing Republicans will see this as weakness. But independents will see it as character on both McCain's and McKinnon's part.
You guys in the GOP seem to have no idea what a great tactical move you've made by presumably nominating McCain. The very reasons you don't like him are the reasons independents do - and so long as you don't commit political suicide, as in the base taking a collective vacation in Fiji this November, independents will decide the election.
From the Democrats perspective, it is sheer luck they also have a candidate who may be as if not more popular with independents.
Posted by: Paul | Feb 13, 2008 8:03:27 PM

The media crowd has a hard time to have a critical look on Obama's record. Every tiny amt of questions will always go back to - oh, he is black, that's why he is being attacked crap. Make no mistake about it, coming this fall, no media would ever do any negative stories about Hussein Obama...too many people are afraid to label as the one being instructmental to defeat the most promising black man to win the White House in this generation.
Posted by: Mike | Feb 13, 2008 8:05:56 PM
Juan----I am supposed to be happy that our nation will become a Socialist nightmare with the phony Republican McCain, and I should thank the Independents for that??? No thanks. You all can commit national suicide without MY gratitude. He won't be any less dangerous to the nation as Obama or Hillary.
Posted by: Joyce- Los Angeles, CA | Feb 13, 2008 8:10:53 PM
The reason why Obama is winning right now is because he listens to the legitimate criticisms leveled against him and he makes necessary changes. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN PEOPLE CONSISTENTLY SAY HE IS AN "EMPTY SUIT" OR SIMPLY RUNNING ON IDEALISTIC RHETORIC, HE MADE CHANGES TO HIS STUMP SPEECHES, ADDED MORE "MEAT," SUBSTANCE, ADDED TOWN HALLS, ECONOMIC MEETINGS, ETC. Imagine a President who actually listens to the American people to get things done? Speaking of empty (pant) suits, why does Hillary avoid answering the question of healthcare mandates and tax increases for the majority of working Americans?

The Federal government is a behemoth that no one person can change, he will change to fit it and line his pockets as well as his friends pockets for 4 or 8 years and of course set us on a collison course for more socialism...yeah can't wait to watch my taxes go back up to pay for all the programs he promises every night. America will be swirling the drain soon... It's a sad time, but we’ve become ignorant, amoral and we deserve it. I truly hope BHO wins in Nov with a large Dem majority in congress; everyone will see what happens and hopefully wake-up. Only after that can we start to work again making this country great after the catastrophe that is coming our way soon. I just hope it doesn't take 8 years as opposed to 4 years, but the American sheepeople are infinitely ignorant so we'll see...

Rasmussen has some interesting head to head polls in battleground states.
In Colorado, Obama has a nice lead over McCain, while McCain has a nice lead over Clinton.
In New Hampshire, Obama is strongly ahead of McCain, while McCain and Clinton are roughly equal.
A little good news for Clinton - she does better against McCain in Missouri than Obama does, though both contests are within a couple points, so inside the margin of error.
Rasmussen also has a national daily tracking poll. Obama has jumped to a five point lead today; the first time since the poll started early last year he has led in this poll.

Has anyone else noticed that this Primary campaign is following a similar trajectory to the plot of the final season of the West Wing? Fresh young candidate who transcends race (so he was Hispanic rather than African-American, but so what) gets himself ahead in the Democratic race. Crusty old, socially liberal Republican (despite having trouble with his conservative base) ties up the GOP nomination. And wasn't there even who resigned from Vinick's campaign staff because he couldn't bring himself to fight against the election of Santos?
Is this a case of life imitating art or what. Spooky.

McCain is getting a taste of what democrats are really about... themselves only!
Dems say and do the opposite of their statements after pandering for votes.
McCain was stupid to fall for the left's set-up tactics, putting his name on bogus, CFR and Immigration bills to feed his mighty ego. He was suckered by Fiendgol, Kennedy and now trader Joe Lieberman.
Dems will use McCain (if he wins) to finish off conservatives, while he smiles for the cameras and media elites.
Democrats simply use people for the gain of their leftist agenda and then toss them aside like Hollyweird flash-in-the-pan liberal has-been's, because all they really care about is money and power for themselves.
McCain needs to wise-up fast, but it's unlikely, as you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Thank God 2012 will bring Romney back!

Peter - take the 30-40% of social conservatives out of the GOP and you get to go back to the 40 years that ended with Bob Michel's reign.
I guess if you like being a permanent minority party, then so be it, but, I guess your views are instructive to this fiscal and social conservative, in that I understand that you kind of want to be Democrat-lite, enjoy some of the chotchke's that Nancy Pelosi tosses you, and sit back and watch the country decay away.
Maybe there's some large consituency that's going to replace ours, but, I don't think you're going to get it in the GOP you envision.

Can't you guys recognize character when you see it? Mr. McKinnon said months ago that he would not make ads (that will inevitably go negative) against Obama. He respects him as a candidate and does not want to be a working part of a campaign that tries to knock him down. Take off the partisan lenses for one minute and recognize when someone follows through on a promise! Democrat or Republican, we should recognize when someone actually keeps their word.

Do conservatives really think that the destruction of our economy, removal of our civil liberties, and decreased standing in the world is the fault of two years of Democratic majority and not the 6 previous years of a conservative Judiciary, Executive, and Legislature?
Are they really that delusional? Do they honestly believe that the massive corruption that has torn the country down is to blame on the people who couldn't do anything about it?
Do they really believe that all of the halls of power are populated primarily by Democrats and not the corporate tax-cutting, lobbyist scandal drenched Republicans?
Wow. I guess Denial's an art form for some people.

How sick is this? Yeah, show us the way Osama. Your Ancestors can't even get running water figured out but you can show the civilized world much. My race and culture sicken me now. How weak. Women prepare your children for slaughter and 3 rd world. It is coming.

The GOP is in this awful mess thanks to Florida's RNC's 'big guns' endorsing McLame in the last minute to stop Romney, who was on a roll. (Robert Novak explains in his column how brother Jeb was behind the coup against Romney in /Florida, after it was obvious that their first choice, former NYC mayor, sank fast with his huge baggage of waste material.) Now the RNC is scrambling with this unappealing candidate. The champaign is already flowing in the camp of the DemoLeft.

2 words -- Mark Fuhrman. This dude probably said the 'N' word on tape somewhere. Sounds like if that emerges it would really be bad for McCain. Note to self, don't say racist crap on tape. Just a theory, but something is real fishy about this. Although, why not just resign quietly. I'm scratching my head. And I love Obama.

All you idiots yammering about Bush and how awful his administration is never seem to understand that a president can't get very far without good support from congress. Everyone knows how ugly the democraps have been towards Bush. They lie all the time and can't keep their campaign promises. Bush could have used some help, not the foul badmouthing from Pelosi and Reid and others of their ilk.

Poor McCain dont have his guns and bullets like when he went to vietnam.
To bail him out on this one ,So it will get ugly when Obama bring out that HARVARD artillery in debates,BTW.. he did gives us a glimpse.. when he sent flip flop Romeny on his way by calling him a "ineffective candidate".

You really have to be nuts;to let this ole coot carry on the BUSH Urban civil
war policy in Iraq, which we have no business being in,and it will continue to drain billions and further sink our economy.Poor obama will have to come in and keep the boat afloat;by putting back those jobs that was lost and put a freeze on those people losing their homes. However he is a guy we can all rally around.

Look at @olga , is going fall for the boogeyman man tactics that the Republicans always play ; with slogans like " dont look in your bedroom closet a terrorist is there" and some voters fall for it hook line and sinker , if this country was so protected.. then why is our borders not secure. The REP party have nothing good to offer the american people but FEAR.

This is an extraordinary story.
How often do we see a seasoned political consultant refuse to work on a campaign because of his authentic idealism about and hopes for the opponent?
This is on
