McCain Attacks Obama on Earmarks
February 14, 2008 12:59 PM
ABC News' Bret Hovell Reports: Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., called on one of his democratic rivals for the White House, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., to disclose how much money Obama has allocated in so-called earmark spending while in Congress.
"The Senator from Illinois, who says that he wants transparency in government, will not reveal the number of earmarks that he received in 2006 and 2005," McCain told a crowd of supporters Thursday in Burlington, Vermont. "Is that transparency in government? I don't think so."
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
It was the second day in a row that McCain attacked Obama, signaling both Obama's success in his field and McCain's decision to direct his focus towards the general election contest.
Earmarks refer to specific spending items that members of Congress can insert into legislation. Eliminating earmarks has been a continuing theme of McCain's campaign and career in the Senate. He says regularly on the stump that he has never asked for or received an earmark project.
"My friends, examine my record on earmark and pork barrel projects, and you will see a big fat zero," he said today in Vermont.
Speaking with reporters Wednesday in Washington, D.C., McCain singled out Obama for not providing many details on his policy proposals, and instead using broad generalities on the stump. He reiterated that attack in Burlington.
"I haven't seen a lot of details on many of Obama's proposals - in fact, very little detail," he said.

We want to know the truth about his drug use in 1999 while he was on the Legislative House in Illinois.
If it is true that he had been doing cocaine or crack cocaine back then, then he has lied to the American people and his autobiography is nothing more than fabrication about his drug use being limitedto teenage years.

The money for Obama's earmarks will pale in comparison to what we'll have to spend to keep troops in Iraq for a hundred years. Does McCain really want to get into a fight over spending?

stevem - Source? Or are you just rumor-mongering?

My doctor said today that any man who votes to permit late-term aborted babies that are born alive to be killed, is not a Christian.
Martin Luther King was a Republican. He would be turning in his grave if he knew how little Mr. Obama values the sanctiy of life. Mr. King stood for values and respect of children and the unborn. Mr. Obama stands for: Abortion, killing of live babies, Gay Marriage, the legalization of marijuana.
What kind of role model is this man for our young.

I want to know how much medication McCain is on right now

McCain pressured the Bush Admin in 1992 for $5,000,000 in wastewater treatment money for Arizona - when he couldn't get it into a spending bill he tried to get the EPA to fund it, but they refused. In 2002 McCain got $10,000,000 for the University of Arizona to create a new law center named after former Chief Justice Rehnquist. In 2006 he tried to get $14,000,000 into a Defense spending bill to create a "buffer zone" around Luke Air Force Base (also in Arizona), despite no support from the President or the appropriate committee. So, I guess it depends on what the meaning of "earmark" is - if you are powerful enough in the Senate, you find other ways of getting your pork projects funded.

When President Bush said that McCain fathered a black child out of wedlock, and that McCain lost his mind when he was a POW, what was he referring to?
What about the articles in the Washington Times about McCain's temper caused fellow republican senator from Mississippi Cochran to say that McCain does not have the temperment to be president?
McCain makes Dole look young and healthy by comparison.

Barack Obama will beat George W. McCain LIKE A DRUM -- on this and every other issue.

Okay, anti-abortion folks. Are you supportive of pre-emptive war, death penalty, torture etc? Let me guess you have voted republican all along. Then I suppose you support these other things that I find much more nefarious than denying a woman's right to choose. It is her body after all.

rattog,
off the top of your head, please name the American cities that have daily car bombs, IEDs and the deaths of dozens of American citizens on a daily basis.
thanks.

Yes but D, Why would this Larry Sinclair chap makes these statements and offer to take a lie detector test?
It is disturbing that the Obama camp has not responded, denied or acknowledged the "frivolous" lawsuit in any way?
Could there be some truth in these accusations? Mr. Obama's sex life is his own business, but if he was smoking crack in 1999 that could be a problem.

The GOP slime machine has already started in on Senator Obama - just days after Senator Clinton noted that Obama had so far be spared this sick crowd's wrath. Time to see if Obama can take the heat and return fire. But please - no false rumors and personal attacks. There is enough loonie statements on policy matters from McCain to fill 10 campaign war chests.

Relax Mark, I stated I thought it was a hoax, remember. But if it has any truth to it, don't you agree it should a least be investigated?
Honestly if it was rumored that Mrs. Clinton was having a gay affair and doing drugs, the MSM would be on it like a buzzard on a crap wagon..lol

The *Democratic* swiftboating of Obama has begun!
Gee -- I wonder who could be behind it?
Posted by: Mark | Feb 14, 2008 1:53:54 PM
This Larry Sinclair "rumor": has been around on the underground news for months. The MSM knows all about it, but would never use it against Mr. Obama. However, I know the Republicans will. They play very dirty, and Mr. Obama will have to at least address this rumor to clear his name.
Silence is not an option. The repubs will have much more "dirt" coming up.

McCain hitting Obama on earmarks, and as one poster noted above, Obama responding about wasted resources going into Iraq for a hundred years are fine. I'm confident the candidates will keep their barbs at that level.

I just read the entire Sinclair v. Obama complaint (it is Smokinggun). So, Mr. Sinclair goes on YouTube and makes allegations against Obama, then files a lawsuit asking for an injunction against Obama and the DNC preventing them from making any comments about him and stopping them from investigating Mr. Sinclair? He alleges a 1st Amendment violation - which is impossible because Obama and the DNC are not the government or agents of the government. Finally - Mr. Sinclair is actin as his own attorney (if there was any merit to his claim, don't you think some enterprising lawyer would take up his cause, at least for the publicity?). This lawsuit (filed February 11) is going to get tossed at the first hearing. p.s. I'm an attorney.

I agree. Can you imagine what we could be doing with the money that we are spending in Iraq? McCain would probably be better than Bush, but Obama would be a change that this country really needs right now. Don't fall fod the republican swift-boating.
