MoveOn Backs Obama For President

ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Sen. Barack Obama's campaign has received the endorsement of the liberal anti-war group MoveOn.org's political action group.

This is MoveOn's first presidential endorsement.

With former Sen. John Edwards out of the race, MoveOn.org emailed its 3.2 million members asking them if they support Sen. Hillary Clinton or Sen. Barack Obama.

About 70 percent of those who responded chose Obama and about 30 percent chose Clinton. The percentage breakdown is by no means a scientific survey of all MoveOn's over 3 million members. Only about 300,000 individual email addresses participated in MoveOn's on-line balloting and members were required to vote within a 24 hour time period.

Obama touted the group's first-ever presidential endorsement in a statement released by MoveOn.

"In just a few years, the members of MoveOn have once again demonstrated that real change comes not from the top-down, but from the bottom-up," Obama wrote. "From their principled opposition to the Iraq war – a war I also opposed from the start – to their strong support for a number of progressive causes, MoveOn shows what Americans can achieve when we come together in a grassroots movement for change. I thank them for their support and look forward to working with their members in the weeks and months ahead."

MoveOn will now use its email list to tap volunteers to make phone calls on behalf of Obama in Super Tuesday states. The group says it has 1.7 members in the states that vote Feb. 5.

MoveOn.org's mobilization efforts are credited with helping the Democratic win the House of Representative in 2006.

"Our members’ endorsement of Senator Obama is a clear call for a new America at this critical moment in history," wrote Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org’s executive director in the statement.

"Seven years of the disastrous policies of the Bush Administration have left the country desperate for change. We need a President who will bring to bear the strong leadership and vision required to end the war in Iraq, provide health care to every American, deal with our climate crisis, and restore America’s standing in the world. The enormity of the challenges require someone who knows how to inspire millions to get involved to change the direction of our country, and someone who will be willing to change business as usual in Washington. Senator Barack Obama has proved he can and will be that President."

With his early opposition to the Iraq war, Obama was a natural for this endorsement once the Democratic nomination contest became a two-person race.

To respond to Courtney,
Obama and Clinton have a lot of big differences in the way they would deal with the big issues of the Iraq War, health insurance coverage for all, the economy, etc.
Read their websites under issues. Obama'a ideas make a lot more sense. And he hasn't taken big corporate money for his campaign while Clinton has. She can't really change the system if she owes favors!
I'm glad Obama was chosen by moveon.org members. They make it very easy to be involved politically even if you are busy. If you chose they send e-mails about different votes coming up in the house and senate with quick links and phone numbers to contact your representatives. It is a terrific way to know what is going on in Congress if you don't have the time for c-span.

Get America Back On Track,

Yes, that's true. Obama does not take money from PAC's or lobbyists. In fact, in order to donate to his campaign, one must verify that their money is not coming from a PAC, lobbyist group, or any other kind of interest group funding. This idea has been central to his campaign on ethics. Because of this, I think it's very unlikely that he would take any money from this group.

I think sometimes candidates get endorsements from groups or publications that they don't necessarily want, but considering MoveOn has such a large number of members with what seems to be a substantial amount of influence, it could end up working out in his favor. We may not all like the group, but we should remember that you can't really choose who endorses you or not.

Being voted most liberal by the National Journal is like being voted ugliest boy by your sister. The National Journal isn't exactly an objective source. All you have to do to be on the list is be a Democrat with a voting record.

Also please take note....All these people that say this endorsement will hurt Obama are either Republicans or Hillary supporters. The only peoeple that will actually care about this endorsement are members of Moveon.org. With 3.2 million memebers that is still important. And any of them that supported Hillary before won't change their mind and any of them who supported Obama before will feel emboldened. But the rest who haven't made up their mind will take this endorsement seriosly.

Lydia,

I totally agree! I'm definitely proud that Obama has nothing to owe to anyone should he make it into office. I think the old way of doing things like that is part of a huge problem that our government faces right now. Hopefully Obama can change that!

Let's look at the details. 3.2 million members - but Move On sends a note (I'm a member so I got one yesterday) with less than 24 hours to vote to their members. I had read that they sent a note to all members on a site that heavily favors Obama - but had not received mine. I sent a note to them - then about 2 hours later - I received my "vote" note. This was very late afternoon yesterday & voting ended at 11am. Why not take the entire weekend & let their full membership vote? Why was the information about the vote only on an Obama supportor site? The story indicates that only 300,000 people responded & according to Move On - 70% supported Obama - so that is 210,000 members out of 3.2 million - that 7% of their membership. So, 7% decides how all of us feel & we will all now just start making calls for Obama - I don't think so. Move on prides itself in listening to it's members & making sure all voices are heard - but they cannot leave the voting open all weekend & make sure at least more than 10% of their membership votes? They should not have counted it unless they reached a certain level of participation. They had already made up their minds. I saw their data from past surveys & it was really fractured - between all candidates. I think they see some polls & saw the debate & wanted to give Obama a boost. Bottom line - the voters are going to make up their own minds & so aren't the Move on members. I don't agree with everything they do - they provide a lot of information & I have supported many of their efforts & candidates - but this member is voting for Clinton.

This should help Obama a lot because MoveOn.org has a big media budget. MoveOn.org represents the New American Majority.

MoveOn.org runs their own ads. It will be interesting to see how they support Obama.

I am a staunch Democrat, and I border on conservative-liberal....this MoveOn.Org is, in my opinion, TOO liberal and will not bode well for Obama. I also intellectually argue that this organization does not have THAT many members. I know of MANY, MANY Democrats, and not but one has excitedly told me that she is a member....I would also argue that many of these members are radical groups of the Democratic party, groups that want specific rights of some type or another and have to band together to become radical and LOUD to demand change. This lends to the argument that these members may be younger folks, maybe college-age. When I was younger and college-age, I was also radically democratic, but now that I am 20 years older, I have more conservative views and believe that change doesn't have to be demanded, but can be worked for and negotiated. Change can happen without demonstrating and fighting others to get your side heard.

So, daddyblue, as a radical liberal will you fight for gay rights for me and my partner and our daughter, and will you march for gays getting the right to marry......because, though I am conservative-liberal, I am also a lesbian.

Posted by: GET AMERICA BACK ON TRACK | Feb 1, 2008 1:58:40 PM

Get America...there is no fight between us as there is far more trouble in the USA than your top concern. Take a seat and we will get there after more pressing problems are tackled...

Posted by: daddyblue | Feb 1, 2008 2:02:37 PM

HEY MOVEON STILL LOVE YOU BUT IM STILL VOTING FOR HILLARY!MIND YOU PEOPLE THAT OBAMA WANTED TO VOTE FOR THE WAR AND FUNDED THE WAR! OK AND AS FAR AS I CAN TELL HE LEAVES MILLIONS WITHOUT HEALTH CARE SO MAYBE MOVEON NEEDS TO GET A CLUE AND VOTE FOR SUBSTANCE NOT HYPE! WHY DONT WE JUST VOTE FOR BRITNEY WHILE WE ARE AHEAD? YEAH THAT WOULD MAKE SENSE!

Posted by: Tammy | Feb 1, 2008 2:09:34 PM

Sand, my invitation to vote came in my e-mail, like my friends did? Are you sure you are a registered member or have changed your e-mail address recently?
And Tammy, please don't lie about Obama. He never wanted to vote for the war, he spoke out against it publicly before it was voted on. He and lots of other senators, including Clinton have voted to continue funding it because they don't want to leave our troops high and dry. And Obama's healthcare plan doesn't leave millions without healthcare unless they choose to. Hillary's plan FORCES people to buy government insurance whether they can afford it or not. She says there will be subsidies but won't give details. And with health insurance companies giving big buck to her campaign I'm sure no one is going to like the amount they have to pay for it, except those companies.

Posted by: Lydia | Feb 1, 2008 2:19:00 PM

Au Contraire, Tammy......I am ALSO for Hillary and will vote for her. She is BRILLIANT.

Don't get me wrong, daddyblue (and, you didn't say that you would march on behalf of us for gay rights, as you are ultra-liberal, and that is what THAT means)......my top concern is NOT gay rights---my partner and I were among the first in the nation to travel to Vermont and get a license..... I am for Hillary and am conservative-liberal because my political positions have changed a bit since my radical college days......I NOW believe that much more can be accomplished in our legislature via bi-partisan work, than to dig one's heels in as either a Right-Wing OR Left-Wing conservative....MoveOn.Org is a contradiction to what Obama claims to be about. This organization polarizes folks, and THAT is NOT what we need in this Democratic party come November to win back the White House. We need to encourage Independants and Moderate republicans to join us in our effort to GET AMERICA BACK ON TRACK. Hillary for President.

Posted by: Get America Back On Track | Feb 1, 2008 2:21:06 PM

Obama is for civil unions, not gay marriage.

Posted by: dionysus | Feb 1, 2008 2:26:42 PM

BTW, people don't forget the NY POST endorsed Obama too. And he has an army of Republicans and Independents that would vote for him over McCain any time.

Soooooo, since he appeals to different interests, doesn't that mean rabid partisanship is over???????????

Posted by: dionysus | Feb 1, 2008 2:29:49 PM

The REAL truth that I have heard in a videotape of Obama discussing his stance on this question is that Obama is actually FOR GAY MARRIAGE, but he realizes that this won't "fly with the American people", so he opts for the less-radical "Civil Unions", because he feels that this can be passed instead of Gay Marriage. It has been a while since I saw the video, but I can provide the link if you want.....it would take me a few minutes.....

Out of the 3.2 million members that MoveOn.org’s on-line balloting process emailed in soliciting their preference for endorsement between Clinton and Obama, approximately 300,000 individuals (die-hard MoveOn.org junkies) actually responded (10%) …. Let’s see… that leaves 2.9 million other “MoveOn.org “members” (90%)… of which a sizable percentage are likely Clinton supporters…doesn’t it???

Posted by: Chioces2008 | Feb 1, 2008 2:36:25 PM

I think this is huge and is indicative of the values Americans are looking for in a leader, one who puts the interest of the hard working American people above that of the special interests. Every piece of legislation Barack Obama has written and introduced since entering politics has been to the benefit of all the people, not just a particular group. While Hillary spouts some good proposals and speaks of her past record as being supportive of the issues concerning the masses, her legislative record since officially entering politics in 2000 speaks otherwise. If anyone has spent time to actually examine these candidates legislative records, not just their proposals, I think you would agree.

Its a crying shame this same group insulted General Petreus a man devoting his life to defending our freedom. This group of liberal scum would of found some way to insult General George Washington.

This endorsement will just prove that he is super ultra liberal and will move the main stream voters to Hillary. Go Hillary!!!!

Posted by: Erie67 | Feb 1, 2008 2:42:46 PM

I am a member & even worked for them during the 2004 campaign. I did eventually receive my ballot - but late. I guess I was just really disappointed that this clearly was a done deal. In the past, they have held voting - open for longer periods of time. They should have advertised directly to their members with a pre-note indicating an upcoming vote was being conducted. Less than 24 hours is not long enough - especially during a work week. In addition, in the past they have only counted votes when a specified participation level was met. 7% of their membership is not a statistically accurate sampling of their entire membership. They complain when this type of stuff is done on the conservative side. I personally believe they should not have endorsed anyone & I would be saying that even if they endorsed Clinton. I do not believe their endorsement will carry much weight - they do have resources - but most people will make up their own minds or have already made up their mind. They should be rallying their members behind the "nominee" - instead by endorsing now - they are adding to the division within the party. Yes, Obama was against the war initially - but has voted for funding (which is against what Move On has been pushing). He also voted for the 2005 Cheney Energy bill - and a lot of the membership (including myself) rank the environment one of the highest priorities. That bill was a sham & something else Move On was against. I think both candidates have plus & minus points for this group.
