Obama Camp Challenges Clinton on Health care Mailer

Share

February 17, 2008 1:54 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: The presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama put out big gun backer Sen. Ted Kennedy and the Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle to respond to the negative Clinton camapign mailer on health care being distributed in Wisconsin.

Kennedy said he was shocked and surprised that Clinton would put out a mailer like this, ad called it a "distortion, misrepresentation, and wrong." He referenced Clinton’s health care fight in 1994 – and said similar negative ads were what contributed to the sinking it – so essentially said that Clinton should have learned from that. Kennedy said health care in the cause of his life, and that he would never have supported Obama if he wasn’t the one who could get comprehensive health care done.

Gov. Doyle echoed Kennedy’s remarks, saying "too bad Clinton has gone to this."

Doyle took more issue with the fact that Clinton has not been in the state much and has a schedule change on Monday and Tuesday, spending even less time in the state, "She only arrived in this state yesterday….before she ever came to this state she started running negative ads."

The conversation also strayed to public financing – as the Clinton campaign holds a conference call about this soon.

National press secretary bill Burton denied that he’s really concerned about the Clinton campaign or McCain campaign saying that Obama broke the pledge on public financing, "I think we’re in a pretty good spot actually…the only reason this is an option on the table is because we pursued it. As for McCain – interesting that he has a new found interest in public financing when he voted against it in 1995. "

Obama spokesman Bill Burton says that based on the pattern of the Clinton campaign he expect to see more negative ads and mailers in the future, "Well the pattern we’ve seen over the course of campaign is when the Clinton campaign is down in the polls and not going well for them, they have responded with negative attacks. No reason to think they are going to change that pattern."

Shocked by the fact that Hillary distorts the truth? Ted must be drinking!

If this shocks Ted he might also be shocked to learn that the sky is blue.

NO ONE should be post a comment on this article unless they are familiar with Hillary's attempt at Healthcare the first time around. The simple fact of the matter is this, she should have been able to achieve that goal. She would have been able to get it passed but she lacked the necessary skills to do so. Research this issue before posting stupid comments that don't have anything to do with the issue at hand.

Both sides readily admit she was nearer to her goal as opposed to further from getting it passed. What will she do now? By issue a mandate is NOT the way to get it done.

Further ask yourselves, why in the hell can't Democrats get anything done? They have been promising us for months they would do this and do that, and haven't done sh-- but get some rebate checks in the mail. Checks that will only drive up the debt. So, those little checks will cost you more than their face value. This Dem. is sick of the excuses of Dem. leaders.

As for the article and OTHER articles, you people better think long and hard about who you want to trust the nomination to. Bull dog tactics and partisan divide won't get ANYTHING done. I'm personally sitting back and taking it all in. I, personally, will vote next month and come Nov. for the person that offers the less: excuses, false promises, bull dog tactics, partisan crap, etc. Doesn't matter what party he/she is in. I will be looking for the best overall candidate. A candidate capable of getting things done, that benefit everyone - not just some. I don't want a compromising person or some nut that plays to his/her base.

"ugly rhetoric and negativity"

Anybody who dares to examine the record or rhetoric or campaign tactics of Obama is called 'negative.' What nonsense.

Obama has stolen Hillary's healthcare plan, her Green Collar jobs plan, and her economic plan. I'm tired of it. If this were an election for best preacher, or best motivational speaker, or best cult leader then I would vote for Obama. But alas, it's an election for president, a job that actually requires detailed knowledge of public policy, a job for which Obama is highly unqualified.

Kennedy shouldn't just be shocked. He should be lobotomized.

But, back to the Clinton mailer on HEALTH CARE PLAN:

ABC NEWS ARTICLE SAYS:

The language the Clinton campaign uses makes it sound like Obama's plan will purposefully leave out specific Americans -- the ominous question "Will it be you?" Asking Obama which Americans "Don't Deserve Health Care"-- when the reason experts say around 15 million Americans will be left out is because those Americans will not sign themselves up.

Clinton attempts to prevent that from happening by imposing mandates -- requirements that everyone signs up. She will not say what he penalty would be, which surely does not live up to the "specifics" she heralds herself for offering.

If you even dare utter the phrase "What does Obama mean by what he says?" it is blasphemy and heresy. It is becoming scary. I am not joining a cult, even if it is wrapped in the flag. there is something rabid and extreme in the 'followers' rhetoric that disturbs me. It reminds me of all that 'unamerican if your against Bush' stuff after 9-11. I have read many, many threats on the internet of what they will do if they don't win...so a mailer is the least of my worries, and it seems mild in the face of Obama playing the race card, for which he was caught live during the following debate too late to halt the effect it had on those numbers out of SC. I kind of think Hillary gets a couple free passes if Obama plays that nasty.

Clinton is right. Universal healthcare means that--universal. Obama's plan is NOT universal, which means that some people will be left out. Obama backers don't want us to know these details until after the election.

I trust Hillary's knowledge of this issue more than Ted Kennedy's. He only endorsed Obama because Hillary said that LBJ signed the Civil rights act, a truthful statement, but one that Ted Kennedy thought omitted the contributions of JFK.

Is it too mauch to ask for a competent president? One that can do more than read a speech? What's happening to America...

Senator Kennedy, there is no distortion here. But there is one when the new messiah says you have done more for universal health care than anyone. That is the distortion. Universal means universal. In case you don’t know the definition it means, total, entire, complete not everyone except 15,000,000.

Who's crying now? Obama whines and cries quite a bit. Even from the beginning. He began the race card. He threw the first mud at the debates. And now he can't live with the truth. America is waking up.

Hillary's health care plan is typical of her style. Force everyone to get it whether they want it or not. And if you have to, garnish their pay to provide the funds needed. Wow that sounds great!

Posted by: Morpheus | Feb 17, 2008 8:32:25 PM

Nobody's wages are going to be garnished. Obviously the American people would not stand for that. But overall, her plan is a good one. That's the reason I voted for her.

I hope to God she wins Wisconsin. Some of us have to worry about not having any healthcare or about being underinsured.

Posted by: Kellie | Feb 17, 2008 9:11:55 PM

Kellie-
If you mandate it, you have to enforce it. Clinton herself said that people's wages would be garnished if they didn't pay for it.

Teddy wouldn't know the truth if it smacked him aside the head.

Every time someone like you goes to the doc or the emergency room without insurance everyone pays. Even little old ladies. Shame on you.

Posted by: C DEPP | Feb 17, 2008 10:27:18 PM

Kellie-

Obama mandates insurance for all kids. So he will garnish your wages to get that cost out of you. And he has also said the adults that go to emer. room, docs and hospital stays without insurance all Americans will have to pay. This is after he gouges anyone right then and there. How would you like to get a $20,000 bill for a hospital stay. This is what we have now. Obama has no idea what he is doing. Check out his plan more carefully and you will see how poor it is.

I am thinking a lot of these older white males can not accept a woman president.
no facts in either of their rebuttals jusr outrage!!! When CNN or MSNBC spend the whole day going negative on Clinton I see no outrage from Sen Kennedy!
Is that a double standard!
Also implying he represents his brothers opinions is a bit disrespectful in my view. I would not imply I can speak for any dead family member. Why can Ted or Caroline Kennedy do so?

Posted by: vince | Feb 18, 2008 12:02:42 AM

Oh and I almost forgot:
I am a Washington outsider (never been there) and I have a lot of hopes and dreams, and I can say : Yes we can! Yes we can!
Therefore I am a better candidate than either Obama or Clinton right?

I totally agree. I am a JFK DEM and find them speaking for my hero insulting. I don't believe for one minute that JFK or RFK would ever support Obama. He talks and talks and talks and has no ideas or plans to back them up.

Posted by: C DEPP | Feb 18, 2008 12:11:41 AM

Good comment C DEPP

JFK was a war hero. RFK was going after the mob among others, I find no similarity to Obama. I find Obama has some nerve drwaing the comparisons. Also Martin Luther King gave his life and really walked the talk.
I find Obama quite arrogant when he sort of implies he ranks up with these great americans.
I find the media wimpy to never ask him about that kind of subtle reference he makes.

Posted by: vince | Feb 18, 2008 12:26:39 AM

Vince

The three were great men who deserve better than to have their memory compared to this bit player.
I see three reasons the media is kissing his butt and the voters are voting for Obama:

The dumbing down of America. (the Bush effect) The American people are blinded by another Bush. To find out that Obama is cousins with Bush and Cheney was shocking.
They have become a cult. Have you seen the nonsense they have been talking about? I have never seen anyone talk and talk and in the end say nothing at all. Obama is a empty suit.

Did you know Obama is running off of Bushes 2000 platform:

CHANGE

I AM NOT A WASHINGTON INSIDER

I DON'T BELIEVE IN WARS IN OTHER COUNTRIES

I HAVE WORKED ACROSS PARTY LINES

( How has that worked out for all of us? How anyone could vote for another Bush I don't know. I think their crazy.)

Some people out there are scared of riots in the streets if Obama is not President. My friends have told me about threats they have seen on the internet from people saying they will do just that. All Americans should take a stand against this kind of sick threat to our democracy.

And the other people want to see a African American in the WH no matter who it is. Mc Cain is even getting calls to put C. Rice on the ticket as VP. I can't believe this kind of race baiting is being used in 2008. Any African American it doesn't matter? It sure does matter. I don't know what is becoming of our great country?
