Obama: McCain 'Traded Principles for his Party’s Nomination'

ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Sen. Barack Obama told a crowd in Waukesha, Wisconsin today that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain "traded principles for his party’s nomination."

Obama argued McCain has acted like President George W. Bush on the economy and on the Iraq war.

"George Bush may not be on the ballot this fall, but his tax cut and his economic policies are… that is a debate that I'm happy to have, because the American people know that Bush's policies have not worked for ordinary Americans," Obama said.

Watch it HERE.

Obama said he was surprised by McCain’s recent criticism of his economic policy – direct criticisms McCain started in the last few days.

“Economics is not his strong suit,” Obama said with a smile, “he said ‘I don’t understand economics very well’, and after he said that, it shows.”

Obama told the audience that he believes McCain’s economic policies would be “more of the same” of Bush tax policies – and argued McCain’s position has undergone a transformation since running for president.

“John McCain criticized (Bush tax cuts) as irresponsible back when he wasn't running for president of the U.S.A. because he understood that we could not keep on with tax cuts for the wealthy at a time of war, that it would be irresponsible," he said.

"That we would have tax cuts when military families are shouldering this burden and so many of the benefits of these tax cuts, and I'm quoting here, so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate. Somewhere along the line, he traded those principles for his party's nomination and now he's for those tax cuts.”

Obama also added a new criticism of McCain, slipping McCain’s name into his classic stump speech line on healthcare.

"Senator Clinton has a good health care plan, I’ve got a good health care plan, John McCain doesn’t have such a good health care plan,” Obama said, but was short on specifics of what he doesn't agree with.

Obama’s criticism of McCain has been slowing building since both won the South Carolina primary. McCain has also been going after Obama directly by name in recent days.

Obama says he is taking McCain’s verbal attacks as a precursor of the general election.

“I thought it was flattering – it’s clear he knows who his opponent is going to be,” Obama said.

If Obama is the Democatic nominee, McCain looks better and better. He has reached across the aisle, and he is a moderate. We need someone with EXPERIENCE!

Wow, how can McCain submit a budget for his economic plan of $7 billion and Bush just put forth his annual budget projection in the Trillions. Sounds like the economy would fall completely flat on McCain's watch, our troops will be without the proper gear and equipment they will need to continue with this senseless war that we are in.

Trust me McCain has no resolutions to the mess that Bush has created. And his budget projection speaks of his inadequacies to run the country. He also missed over 50% of the Senate votes (something like 255) over the past year that decided policies that effect us as citizens.

I don't trust Obama, the verdict is still out on this one. Good speaker but "talk is cheap, it's takes money to buy good whiskey". He has no previous record to stand on as far as accomplishments go. He missed 37% of Senate votes that involved policies that effect us as citizens.

Huckabee is too religious (so he thinks), we don't need anymore of the Christian right in there. Look at the mess we're in now.

It would appear to me that they only hope would be that an Independent steps forward and makes a run for the White House that has a record to stand on so we know exactly what the person is about.

If not, I think that Hillary Clinton is the only person that can really get the job done. She is a very intelligent candidate and a record of success that is evident. At least there was peace times and a good economy the last time a Clinton resided in the White House. It took a Clinton to clean up the last Bush mess, I'm thinking that it will take a Clinton again to clean-up the bigger mess we're in now. She has been present to vote for more policies than either McCain or Obama, she missed 24% of the votes. We need a President that has shown more dedication to the needs of the American people. Hillary is the best choice for who is available at this time, perhaps at the convention the Democrats will draft Al Gore as the nominee, if not Clinton is the best available choice.

Because Obama is too intelligent to lose focus and look beyond the Democratic nomination, his strategy is LESS about insane McCain, and more about making the Clintons THIRD TERM bid seem irrelevant to Democratic voters.

American short attention span makes it a waste of time to begin a General Election bid at this early a date.
The aim is to make Hilary Clinton appear irrelevant; although Barack does not need to do anything to make Hilary just go away from voters attention.

Is it really wise to place "smack" and "Obama" in the same headline. Next McCain will be telling us Obama fried some brain cells when he was using drugs in his youth.

I can tell Hillary's done from here in California; you don't even have to stick the fork in.

Did McCain need a deal with a fundraiser to buy a home? Obama ever heard of a bank? If you cannot afford a home you just don't buy it. Basic economics there Obama. Or is Michelle in control of the calculator at Obama's house?

Obama took shots at Clinton for voting for a tax break for corporations that make profits overseas. He is WRONG. Without bringing jobs overseas, US companies will collapse which leads to the collapse of the entire US economy. We have to stay competitive with other companies around the world. No one in the world would want to buy a $5 spoon which is made in US, while it costs a few cents if made in China. We are selling our products worldwide, not in US only. US companies can not survive by just selling to Americans. Out sourcing is a must. But, providing tax cut for the companies, it will help them to have extra money to hire people to do researches, find the new technologies and create new jobs for people in US. It is Hillary’s plan. Rolling back tax cut for corporations is a big mistake.

weffiewonj: You obviously are speaking of Senate Bill S-1087, the Amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act. You need to log in to the GPO and read the Amendment. What you're saying couldn't be farther from the truth. The bill is designed to provide equal pay and prohibit discrimination for similar but not dissimilar work based on race, sex, or national origin, such has been happening for decades, especially where women are highly qualified and are given the job but at less pay than a man would be paid. I give Barack kudos for signing on to this bill. Perhaps you're one of those who would like to hire Hillary to be President, but only pay her $300,000 a year, not the $400,000 legal salary.

Obama showed his true colors as a dispicable low life when he insulted Mitt Romney after he (Romney) bowed out of the GOP contest gracefully.

Obama gets a pleasure out of kicking people when they are down, and this is not what leaders in other countries are going to want to see in the new U.S. leader.

Also, Obama simply will never give specifics about anything because he has none - remember - he voted "present" some 190+ times meaning he wasn't willing to take a stance on the bills up for vote. Do we even know if this guy is literate?

Why does nobody question Barack Obama's rhetoric. I get sick of the media's love affair with him and it will be a sad day if Americans elect a President who has no record of accomplishment...and only a record of politically motivated rhetoric.

Obama has the cult following for now and people willing to drink the KoolAid.
If he wins the Democratic nomination, the hip walk, the rhetoric of messianic proportion, will be reduced to once sentence stutters as he has to explain himself, not to the MoveOn.org wing of his adoring public, but to the general public of centrists and less educated workers. He is McGovern and Carter all wrapped up in a MSM package delivered for your Valentine's Day. However, while VD occurs once a year, it remains in your heart forever.

Pat: Why didn't you continue with the rest of your little table. You for got the $150 billion in annual savings after Ron Paul eliminated most of the government . It's at the bottom of the table you quoted from the Ron Paul website. What you might check into is the projected annual saving by passing Barack Obama's Senate bill S-1181, titled Shareholder Vote on Executive Compensation Act. This bill has now been read twice and is currently in the Committee of Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. It currently has over 90%support by Democrats, but opposed by 70% Republicans. It has been estimated passage of this bill will return over $500 billion to the U.S. Economy. Go to www.thomas.loc.gov and read it. This is one of the major reasons the Republicans don't want Senator Obama in the Presidency. They know if he wins, this bill wins.

It was shocking to me to be forced to vote Democrat in 2006 and once again I'm forced to abandon the Republicans, John McCain is no better than Bush and probably worse.

Wow, its easy to understand how Bush won 2 elections (actually he lost but that's another story) when you read some of the things people have written here. I think anyone that voted for Bush in the last 2 elections needs to sit this one out for the sake of the country because they have showed such a lack of common sense. We need a fresh start and I think Obama is the one to do it. Obama in 2008!!!

The most important economic policy decision will be who will END the wars and who will sell-out to the war profittering anarchists who don't give a rat's @s( about anyone but themselves.
McCain: 4 more wars
shrillary: The right-wing conspirarist's made me do it
Obama: Let's END this with the minimum amount of bloodshed...BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE WE ARE OUT.

Look at the picture ABC ran of McCain - that is a clue to what is to come as the media turns it's Racketeering Election Fraud attention and attacks from Hillary to McCain.

You talked today about Hillary going "negative" on Obama calling for debates in WI but you never mentioned Obama's mailer that falsely says Hillary called NAFTA a "boon". Why is that?

ABG: That's a nice little link you provided. Like so many others you find a blog that appears to be derogatory, and you stop there and decide to use it derogatorily. Why didn't you follow through and investigate what happened after Whirlpool bought Maytag. Try the article in USA Today, 5-10-2006 entitled "Whirlpool to cut 4500 jobs, close plants" http://www.USAtoday.com/money/industries/manufacturing/2006/-05-10-whirlpool_x.htm If you had you would have found there was little Senator Obama could do as a state legislator, but once he became a U.S.Senator, he took up the fight for the displaced workers in Iowa and Illinois.
