Obama on Pigskin & Politics: 'Sometimes the Underdog Pulls it Out'
February 04, 2008 5:45 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: The day after the Super Bowl and the day before Super Tuesday brought Obama to the Meadowlands in New Jersey where he talked pigskin and politics.
Campaigning with Senator Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., and Caroline Kennedy, Obama greeted the Giants-friendly crowd saying, “For me to be able to bring a Patriot fan to the Meadowlands the day after the Super Bowl,” Obama said referencing the famous Massachusetts family, “is like bringing the lion and the lamb together. We can bridge all gaps and all divisions in this country.”
Obama rooted for the Patriots to win the Super Bowl, since his hometown team, the Chicago Bears, were not in the game.
“My bears didn’t even make the playoffs,” Obama joked and said to Senator Kennedy, “I think we should take heart, Ted, the fact that sometimes the underdog pulls it out. You can’t always believe the pundits and prognosticators.”
The crowd laughed at the obvious reference to Obama’s own run against Senator Hillary Clinton, a race in which he has repeatedly cast himself as the underdog.
Campaigning in New Jersey, beside Clinton’s New York hometurf, the crowd was significantly smaller than in recent days. Onsite staff said the campaign expected 6,000-8,000 people, but the crowd that arrived was more like between 2,000 and 4,000.

Fabricating poll results to favor Hilliary, why not, it worked in NH. I guess they realized the lie is easier to believe when they throw it out BEFORE the vote, rather than after. Touche' Hillliary, Touche'. Now if we could only get a tear from you... Ah! Well done, sister! I knew you were my Girl!!!!

Who is really the divisive of the candidates? It is really OBAMA! He is the unexpected and what is he doing to the Democratic Party? And watchout democrats! There's a rumor going around that the Republicans are out there where they can voting for Obama so Hillary Clinton could be defeated, making it easy for John McCain. In fact, my family will vote for McCain if Obama becomes the Democrat's nominee.

If you look closer at the data, CNN is the newest data. And it has Obama +3.
Either way it's a statistical tie, but I'm sure her crying will cause a surge that's not in these polls.

I am sure that when some African Americans have switched from Hillary Clinton to Barack Obama, they are considering his race. They know H. Clinton is better qualified if they'd be honest. And the sad fact about it, is that he is only taking advantage of the years of suffering by African Americans whose roots go all the way back before the civil war. How lucky can he be! He is not the one my friends' ancestors had sacrificed for! I wish that someday there would be someone from those families who would run for president of this country. I'd be his/her strongest supporter. I truly wish Oprah would look for that person.

I wonder if the Kennedy supporters of B. Obama truly believe in him! I wonder if they just don't like the Clintons to be back at the White House as they have failed to be the political dynasty that they want to be. Caroline and Ted Kennedy seem to have forgotten that it was President Clinton who so willingly provided the means to search for the body of John, Jr.

When the democratic establishment have endorsed you I highly doubt you are an underdog. Obama with your momentum and endorsements as of tomorrow you will officially be the front runner. Even if I'm wrong it is going to be close no matter what. Congrats Obama and his supporters, but stop being modest, many times modesty is related to doubt, which can influence voters.

Rightondayone, CNN had two polls showing both Clinton and Obama ahead by three points. The one favoring Obama, was CNN's.

Last night on Hannity and Colmes a room of supposed undecideds were asked what policy from Obama swayed their vote. The answers were 1./ He is a great speaker 2./ he can unite us 3./ he is inspirational and so they kept repeating. Didn't know what "policy" mean't let alone knew what one was. Pretty much summed up his whole campaign and accurately reflects how his supporters state their case on message boards. Its all about the shiny wrapping paper. Of course this is not all supporters but a huge percentage. They are caught up in a thrill but elections create realities. Be it HRC or BHO eliminate personalities people and vote for policies because that is what will effect your reality.

Obama supporters are very familiar with his policies. He's stated them very clearly, again and again; transparency in politics, a workable national health system, diplomacy first in foreign affairs among them. The thing is, the differences between his policies and Clinton's aren't that wide, so the decideing factor between them is really who we believe can get the country together behind those policies. Piss on inspiration all you like, but I'm afraid if we elect Mrs. Clinton, the nation will go back to sleep and nothing will really ever change.

I agree that Obama's and Clinton's policies are very much alike, but my reason for supporting Obama over Clinton is that I just don't trust Hillary. The crying seems like nothing more then manipulation to me, she doesn't seem genuine. And I think we've had enough manipulation and lies over the past 8 years, and I really don't want another 4-8 years more of it.

I heard that line about bringing a Pats fan to the Meadowlands on TV yesterday - pretty funny.
Interesting - I heard that on Hannity and Colmes. I immediately thought what if the focus group was asked that question about any candidate? Clinton, McCain, Romney, etc.
"Hey, you're on national TV, now in the next two seconds name a major accomplishment for any of these candidates."
You'd get the same blank stares.

All you people who claim Obama doesn't deliver facts ought to go to his webpage. He very clearly states, in videos of speeches he's made over the past few years, his policies and plans. He has experience in the senate, experience working with and helping regular Americans, and good judgement. Like it or not, intangible things matter as much as the tangible in politics. I, for one am sick, of same old, same old. I want a candidate I can trust, and I think that candidate is Obama.

Clinton, was a good president, we have trash now in the White House. Obama is black I don't think that will unite us and black people will think they have an edge now, I don't trust him. Clinton, help the country alot with welfare and medical insurance, we need to give her a chance. The country, needs leadership, we are in grave trouble now. We need to go for a sure thing, HILARY CLINTON

I have never been so proud of any decision in my life than my decision to vote for Barack Obama today. He has impacted me on a human level and changed my life forever. I trust his good judgement (which HE has shown FROM DAY ONE) and look forward to putting my future and the future of my country in his hands.
I went into this race open minded and ready to vote for Hillary Clinton. She has proven all her criticisms to be correct. She and her husband are her own worse enemies.
Obama 08!

Obama, when you have CNN, MSNBC, FOX NEWS and various other commentators on the other stations singing your praises 24/7, along with OPRAH, you are hardly an underdog. Give it up! You are, as we can all see; a politician. Who knew the victim card could be so handy. Especially for the Republicans who seem to give you the most media coverage of all. Soooo scary...
Posted by: irma | Feb 5, 2008 6:39:30 PM
Well said, Irma .. no underdog at all!
The media is treating Hillary as they did her husband when he ran .. and he said ' with me you get two for one'.. she has much experience .. much more than Obama ..
