Oprah to Stump for Obama in California
February 01, 2008 5:39 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Talk-show queen Oprah Winfrey will be campaigning for Obama in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, just two days before primary voters cast their ballots in the delegate-rich state.
Winfrey will be joined by Sen. Barack Obama's wife, Michelle Obama, and Caroline Kennedy for what the campaign calls a "Get Out the Vote Rally."
Oprah is a longtime friend of Maria Shriver -- Caroline Kennedy's cousin.
The last time Winfrey was out on the campaign trail was the weekend of December 8 - where she, along with Barack and Michelle Obama made a four city, three state campaign swing. Winfrey drew enormous crowds during campaign appearances with Obama.
Since that time Winfrey has not been out on the campaign trail. She may have been persuaded to campaign in California because she owns an estate there, where she held an fundraiser for Obama in September.
In an interview with ABC News' Diane Sawyer, she said she is taking her role as a political spokeswoman seriously. She told Sawyer that she wrote her own speech before events instead of giving an impromptu talk, as she often does.
Winfrey has also said that her endorsement of Obama, is not a slight against his chief Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Clinton.
"I've always said this, that my being in support of Barack Obama is not my being against Hillary Clinton or anybody else," Winfrey told Sawyer in December.
"It's just that for this moment in time, this is what I know I am supposed to be doing. I feel compelled to do this. So my vote for is not a vote against anybody. It's just a vote for."

They need to tone down the religious revival feeling of the events this time. I started to watch the one in SC last month and it turned me off because it felt like a sermon on high. It was the beginning of the end for any support of Obama from me during the primaries. I'm voting for Hillary Clinton - substance over media pep-rallies and hype.

i have NO idea how this is supposed to help Obama with the white vote and male vote.
What does OPRAH have anything to do with law, the state of the nation, or anything else. Its about TWISTING peoples votes thru star power BRAINWASHING.
Im telling you all this. If Obama really does win the whitehouse, then there are going to be generations of MOVIE STARS and ATHLETES with a high school education running for president.
Its become a story of electing ANYONE who can HYPE himself to death.

You go, girl, Miss O!
Every American awake today will be jumping on the Obama wagon, which is carrying America's future to a truly better place.
Mary, if the Black faces of the energized Americans at the South Carolina rallies turn you off, then those faces in the Mid-West may be better suited to your prejudice eyes. Either place, Senator Obama doesn't mind; and he no doubt understand your unease.
That is one reason Obama is seeking to be President: He will remove centuries of American ignorance, fear and ill will through education of one form or another.

The sad thing is the media (as they have already) will go bonkers over this event even though they already covered it ad nauseum when she first did events for him. It is pretty sad when a celebrity could determine who our next President will be.

It is so great that someone can say, "my being in support of Barack Obama is not my being against Hillary Clinton." This is true for many Democrats. We are not against Hillary at all. We just love Obama and feel that he is the right person at this moment in time.

OBAMA should join a reality show. I think he will make some money. Let us not risk our economy in the name of celebrity.

I think Oprah says it well when she says a vote for Obama is not a vote against Clinton. The Obama train is picking up steam, and the haters are typing their venom. The polls now show CA at Clinton 43% Obama 40%. Moveon and SEIU endorsements will help a lot there. Oprah may swing more women into voting Obama, they seem to respect her opinion. Enough drops may fill the bucket.
Tom - President of Harvard Law Review is a bit more than a high school education, but don't let facts get in your way.

IS MITCHELLE OBAMA HIS "BOSS AT HOME" ?

Poor Oprah - all this way for nothing. Someone should have told her the large percentage of Californians vote absentee and did so over a month ago. Right after her boy got downed in New Hampshire.

I'm an Afro-American female, who USED TO idolize Oprah...not anymore. Her power, due to her money, has gone to her head, & she's ABUSING it!!! I'm now EXTREMELY ASHAMED of her!!!!!

To Denise James:
Oprah's abusing it because she's not supporting your candidate? Come on...be real and honest.

I am glad to see Obama is getting some help from his close friends, Oprah, Kennedys and his spouse Michelle. I am sick and tired of Hillary machine (it has too strong smell of old opportunistic politics.) By the way, Obama has to emphasize more that he oppose the war from the day one. Obama has good judgement, is smart, intelligent and fair. He has my vote!!!

Oprah for VP. Now, that would be hilarious. What an odd couple--Obama, Oprah, and Caroline. Makes Obama look awfully weak. Do these expect women to change their hearts and minds? I don't think so; Florida showed women favor Hillary strongly. As I white male, I join with the sisterhood in supporting Hillary as the next President of the U.S. of America. On victory Super Tuesday and Hillary for President.

The Republicans give us a choice of a 71 year old hawk who says "we'll be in Iraq for 100 years" or a man they claim is a "great manager" who has spent $35 million of his own money on an unsuccesful campaign. And that's the best they can do? Not only in the U.S., but across this planet, people WANT Obama. Wanting Obama is NOT a slam against Hillary. Obama/Hillary or Hillary/Obama will reverse the cycle of hate that Bush has created for America and Americans around the globe.
Posted by: eric | Feb 1, 2008 6:55:28 PM
Gobama: I read Mary's statement and I did not read any thing about race. Where did you read that? And Obama is not running for president to change America he is running to change history. From a white president to a black president. Everyone is not smart enough to read between the lines. I believe Hillary will win the nomination and go on to campaign for the presidency.

Me thinks all the good ol' boys in America are afraid of voting for a woman.
Look I am European and they had female regents for hundreds of years.
Vote for Hillary and be a man! Women make better leaders than any man.
Amen!

man, man, man....... I didn't know there are too many dumb people in the so-called greatest country in the world. What is wrong in Oprah supporting Barack just like any citizen of this country will support any candidate of their choice. Get over yourselves people and help in making the world be a better place for one and all...

Well glad Oprah can get out of the cold of Chicago to the warmth of California, unlike those tennants Obama's friend and political patron Rezko let freeze a few years back claiming he had no money to pay for heating his slums while at the same time they were freezing he was providing Obama campaign funds!
Go Oprah! You make us all proud to see you drop even lower in TV ratings and hopefully off the air with your friend Dr. Phil!
