Robert De Niro Hits Trail for Obama

ABC News' David Wright, Andy Fies and Sunlen Miller Report: Campaigning today in New Jersey -- Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Clinton's, D-N.Y. backyard -- Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., was introduced with a back-handed compliment by a surprise guest: Academy Award winner Robert De Niro who took criticism of Obama's "experience" head on.

"Barack Obama doesn't have the experience to run for President of the United States, and I can prove it," De Niro said, as the crowd initially booed because it appeared that De Niro was insulting Obama.

"He did not have the foresight to vote for the Iraq War," De Niro continued,  "You know: that's the kind of inexperience I can get used to.  That's the kind of inexperience our country deserves."

Noting that he had never made a speech at a presidential campaign event before, De Niro said, "If this contest were to be decided strictly on the basis of experience, Dick Cheney would be our next president.  I would prefer Barack Obama's type of experience."

Among the others at the Meadowlands Sports Complex (home to yesterday's Superbowl-winning New York Giants) with Obama in a final campaign push leading into Super Tuesday were Sen Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., and his niece Caroline Kennedy.  Both endorsed Obama's presidential bid last week.

Obama joked that having Ted Kennedy with him is an example of his ability to bring foes together.

"For me to be able to bring a Patriots fan to the Meadowlands one day after the Superbowl is like bringing the lion and the lamb together," he said.

Obama also noted that, although he's a Bears fan, he has reason to cheer a Giants victory.

"We should take heart," he said, "cause sometimes the underdog pulls it out."

Prior to the game, however, Obama confided to reporters that he was rooting for the Patriots so they would complete a perfect season.

Clinton, of course, was rooting for the NY team.

I hope it is not the type of media hype to create another New Hampshire. I want the polls to manifect itself truly on voting tommorrow.

I'd like to correct Mr. Deniro. Barack Obama never voted for or against the Iraq war because he was not yet in the U.S. Senate at the time of the vote. Contrary to what the media would like us to believe, you can not cast a congressional vote if you are not a member of Congress. Look at the votes Obama did cast once he was actually a member of the Senate if you want a more realistic view of the issue. I'd hear about how a candidate plans to get us out of Iraq.

So sorry to read your comment, but this race is not over, I am fed up w/the media's bias coverage, peoples unproven statements, and meaningless polls. Barack can gather all the famous people he wants, they are just a portion of America. Unfortunately, they are going w/a friend not a president. The ones on top stick together and do not look at struggels of the common man that makes there paycheck. Without the fans they are nothing. I don't care what movie star endorsed any candidate. The people will speak through their vote not the media. Not many of the rich/famous will walk the shoes of a common man and few recall where they come from, in a time like this they become a yes man. Watch out there are plenty people on the bottom of the food chain that are registered voters! They have a dream also, happy with the way this country is meant to be ran and like our constitution the way it is!

Here is something odd about the polling.

Obama and Clinton are tied in a new CBS News poll, 41%-41%, though Clinton leads 49%-31% among those who live in Feb. 5 states.

So Obama is close nationally but that includes states that do not vote tomorrow. You look at these states only Hillary is up by 18%.

Folks can look at the polls all they want...all it proves is that there are folks out there chompin' at the bit to vote...

Go Obama. :-)

if the hollywood, wine and cheese, crowd, were any good at picking winners, we'd be talking about president john kerry's run for reelection. all those excitable young people don't have the experience of watching their new rock star type go down in flames in a general election or they would be a little more circumspect. what the wine and cheese types are good at is picking the candidate who will be most popular with the kids they are trying to sell movies and music to and trying to associate with that person so they can sell themselves more. and that candidate is also selling himself. selling himself, and us, out.

HollyWood is running this country now. Canada will set up a wall to stop United States citizens from going into Canada real soon.

Obama inspires me. Hillary is a good
candidate; but she does not inspire
me. So I am voting Obama. If Hillary
wins the nomination, I will vote for
her definitely. I do not care about the
experience. I believe the greatest asset
of a President is the baility to bring
people together. And Obama does that
better than Senator Clinton.

I really don't give a hoot, what the 'Stars" say.. This ain't no movie..this is real life.. Obama is a good man, and if he wants to be the Leader, let him start as a V.P. .. I don't want another 4years an out, like we had with Jimmy Carter.. Hillary Clinton is the best choice, and only person that can clean up the mess that the USA in in..

WOW i will now go out and vote for this creep Obama now. Hollywood and News propaganda is really ruining the politics in this country.

Posted by: davie crocker | Feb 4, 2008 4:36:58 PM

If robert de niro says vote for Obama , its GOTTA be true.

The 'bandwagon' is getting INSANE. Is there some kind of secret experience Obama has that we dont know about? He was president or ambassador to another country and we forgot? No? Just a local illinois boy who put 1/2 a senate term in before he hit the presidential trail?

Man are the obama people going to DENY they voted for him. Watch and see how he screws up the country even more. Then all these RETARDS who helped hype him into office are going to DENY IT .

This race is not about gender, rich, old or young, but about who can bring meaninful change, Obama has been a grass root fighter as a communty organiser, he is the only one in this race that can bring Americans together for a common goal, you hear him say 'we'when he talks about what he will do for America, meaning he is couting every Americans in this change process, but on the other side Hillary says my experience as an individual, she takes pride in her self than the nation and cannot be a good leader.

people shoulf not vote Hillary who authourised the death of American citizens in Iraq, by voting for that bill that reads AUTOURISATION TO USE MILLITARY ACTION ON IRAQ. She claims if she had known what she knows now, but remember this iraq war is about 5 yeras now, meaning her experience of 35 years she claims was 30 years when she voted for Iraq war.
so if 30 years experience was not enough to know that, that voting was not right, then experience is not then the case, but the divine insight of Obama.
A vote for Obama, is a vote for change in America and the world

Desperate move #1: Try the "emotion thing" again in Connecticut

Desperate move #2: Try and start a buzz that Hillary would make him VP. ("Golly, maybe we could get both!")

Desperate move #3: Keep the drumbeat going about "experience" in spite of the widespread realization that it's The Big Lie. Hey, can't change things now.

Desperate move #4: Ignore the blockbuster event in California: Caroline, Oprah, Michelle and Maria Shriver. There is no possible comeback to the overpowering messgae that women are not lemmings.

Remember, the definition of a con artist is someone who can perfectly imitate the actions of an honest and sincere person.

To quote the great writer John Irving in one of my favorite Novels, "A Prayer for Owen Meany",
"Made for TV".

Seems we are electing a president based on what celebrities like DeNiro, Oprah, Caroline Kennedy, Usher, and George Clooney think? Geez, what do all these celebrities have in common? That's right, they are all elitist liberals. Rich people, who have no clue. Yeah, I am going to take their endorsement as gold. ROTFLMAO

Hey Sam... why are you shouting?

Speaking of spin, how come you are blindly repeating Hillary's manufactured talking points? Sounds like they have you under their spell.

Keep your eye on the big picture, and don't be distracted by simple slogans that are substitutes for solutions to difficult problems.

Clearly Barack Obama has caught our collective imaginations. This will continue to grow throughout the year, and yes, he will rechart the course for us all through trust, truth and a post-racial era. It's as exciting a time in America that anyone alive has ever known.

Posted by: Gorgon '08 | Feb 5, 2008 12:09:37 AM

I don't know, Gorgon. I see the all caps and don't bother to read the message.

I agree - is an exciting race. Just think how much that excitement will go away if Obama doesn't win the nomination. But on a more positive note, this is fun and shows some promise of getting even better when Obama and Clinton come out of today essentially tied - a prospect no one was even considering a couple months ago.
