Romney: McCain Is Another Bob Dole
February 05, 2008 11:36 AM
ABC News' Bret Hovell and Teddy Davis Report: Republican Mitt Romney responded Tuesday to a pro-McCain letter written by Bob Dole by saying on "Fox and Friends" that the former Senate Majority Leader and World War II veteran is "probably the last person" he would want to write a letter on his behalf.
McCain responded by demanding that Romney apologize to Dole.
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
Speaking to reporters on the back of his campaign plane in Newark, N.J., McCain said, "I think Gov. Romney should apologize to Bob Dole for his statement. . . this is no way to end up this campaign by attacking a genuine American war hero."
Since talking about Dole on "Fox and Friends," Romney is softening his words.
On Laura Ingraham's radio show, Romney called Dole "an American hero" and a "terrific guy," while acknowledging that he would like to have every endorsement. But the former Massachusetts governor is sticking to his underlying argument that McCain, like Dole, is a flawed candidate despite being "the anointed choice" and the "next in line."
Romney contends that he would make a better nominee than his older rival because as a former governor and business consultant he can position the G.O.P. as the party seeking change in Washington.
For months, one of the whispers you would hear from Romney advisers is that McCain "is turning into Bob Dole."
And it has nothing to do with being "annointed" or being the person who "waited the longest." They are calling him old, trying to make the Republican nomination fight a generational-type battle.
On Monday, Dole wrote conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh in an effort to quell conservative complaints about McCain being the Republican nominee.
"Rush," Dole wrote, "I was the Republican Leader from January 1985 until I left the Senate voluntarily in June 1996. I worked closely with Senator McCain when he came to the Senate in 1987 until I departed. I cannot recall a single instance when he did not support the Party on critical votes."

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Romney: McCain Is Another Bob Dole:
I can't vote for Romney because he is not a Christian. As a Republican, I'm going for McCain because he is a true believer. On the Democratic side, from what I've read (a lot!!!) Obama is the strongest Christian. He was exposed to a lot of other religious but chose Christianity. I think that makes him more qualified to address issues of concern to all religions. I'm sticking with McCain even though he's older than I'd like.

McCain IS Bob Dole... and Mitt IS the male Hilliary! Vote for either of these guys and you are a Democrat. NOT a Republican. You may get the nomination... But don't you dare claim to speak for the Republican party. None of these bums represent Republican values. Never have and NEVER will! Looks like a good year to be a real Democrat, and not another wishy-washy RINO... Just like '96 the party is giving it to a Clinton. If you can't see this your not looking or you just don't care. But since when did Democrats care about Republican principle anyway. Too bad the party is owned by these turkeys. Pathetic.

McCain, the guy that ran around his wife and divorced her and married a trophy wife is not the Christian candidate. People - get over Romney's religion. Of course he is not Christian in the traditional sense. But he is a family man with deep moral convictions. He is conservative, a Washington outsider and a million times more intelligent and qualified than McCain. Its time we have a smart president after 8 years with the current one. McCain is old and will not motivate anyone to vote for him. Being a war hero and a politician does not make you qualified to be president. Just look at the current one and vote for a smart president that can lead the world and gain the respect of the world community.

McCain has ZERO sack when it comes to standing up for CONSERVATIVE VALUES AND AMERICA. Okay, the guy was a POW, I respect the fact that got captured and endured, but this is not an election for the most likely to get captured, this is for the hardest job in the world! This is for the speaker and figurehead of our country! This is about dealing with our economy, not Mexico's. This is about using SCIENCE to deal with climate change, not legislation. This is about making immigrants EARN THE RIGHT TO STAY, NOT AMNESTY AS MCCAIN WOULD HAVE GIVEN!! ROMNEY IS NOT MY FIRST CHOICE, THOMPSON WAS, BUT HE IS THOUSANDS TIMES BETTER THAN MCCAIN THE DEMOCRAT, THE HUCKSTER, OR CRAZY RON'S TV SALES!!

I'm sick of Mitt Romney's ageist tactics. This Dole remark is no accident, considering all the petty stuff Mitt's campaign has been putting out about McCain's age. For the record, Ronald Reagan was 78 when he left office, and McCain is only 71 (and could probably knock down Milquetoast Mitt in a friendly three-rounder!).
Posted by: Frank | Feb 5, 2008 1:44:44 PM
If you are conservative, why would you vote for a Democrat in disguise (AKA McCain). He likes to call himself conservative, but look no further than his voting record to see where he really stands. Vote Mitt Romney for President 2008. He is right for the Republican Party and Right for The United States of America.
Posted by: Erin | Feb 5, 2008 2:07:48 PM
And Reagan, it was learned shortly thereafter, had Alzheimers--possibly while he was still in office!
Age does matter.
Posted by: ComeOn | Feb 5, 2008 2:08:59 PM
Mitt is the strongest Republican candidate. He is intelligent, a family man with good morals, a Christian (how many time does he have to say he belives in Christ?), inventive, and will bring real change. We need someone with bussiness sense that can think "outside the box" for real solutions to real problems.
Posted by: Sonia | Feb 5, 2008 2:13:32 PM
McCain has no experience for standing up for conseratives in the United States Senate. Just because he was a POW, so were thousands of ours, but this is not an election for the most likely to get captured and lose your plane! This is for the leader our country! This is about dealing with our economy, not Mexico's. Mitt Romney is the only candidate that can represent us without being narly and getting upset over nothing with other governments like McCain does now. What is the state of McCain health now? I know he has gone through alot of facial cancer removal. What else is he hiding??

It is unbelievable that people continue to refuse to vote for Romney because he is not "Christian." A person would be considered a bigot if they said they wouldn't vote for someone because they were black, but why is refusing to vote for someone because of their religion considered okay. Look at Mitt Romney for where he stands on issues. Then if you are still concerned about his moral character look at his life and what kind of person he is. He has a good marriage (has never been divorced), a good family, and moral values. What is lacking? My answer is, not much.
Posted by: Erin | Feb 5, 2008 2:23:20 PM
If all of the Senators (Clinton, Obama, McCain) really know how to bring "change" to America, why haven't they already introduced bills to fix it. They haven't changed anything yet, so why would putting them in office "change" anything. Vote Mitt Romney! He understands revenue and expenses. You can't spend more then you have, or your business doesn't survive. The US Government needs an outsider to explain this phenomenon.
Posted by: Val | Feb 5, 2008 2:32:20 PM
Mitt Romney should not be comander and chief, by smearing McCain and putting down Bob Dole He shows a lack of respect for veterans and looks desperate.
Posted by: ray | Feb 5, 2008 2:37:56 PM
There isn't much difference between Obama, Clinton and McCain. McCain is no "Reagan." Reagan was conservative, had a strong vision, was charismatic and was the most eloquent speaker of his time. McCain has none of those characteristics. Its time for John McCain to apologize to his first wife and go fix the border problem in Arizona.
Posted by: Ron | Feb 5, 2008 2:40:05 PM
I respect Bob Dole though I did not vote for him. I respect McCain though I will not likely vote for him. I do not respect Romney based on the way he lies on the stump.I will support Obama.

To free all minds, your barking up the wrong trees. There is a candidate that is not playing "diry pool", the worst FACTS they can come up w/is THEIR OPINIONS of religion, again not facts. A plan to restore; change, only true conservative, and just a genuine person taht recognizes ALL people as people. A candidate that can UNITE all. None of the "bad" campaigning bologna going on with him as with EVERY other candidate. IF YOU HAVE NOT HEARD PLEASE DO BEFORE THE PEOPLE LOSE OUT. I SUPPORT THIS TYPE OF PERSON and thank you Huckabee for giving hope this country can work the initail way it was intended to.
Posted by: callenfallen | Feb 5, 2008 3:31:50 PM
What does Christianity have to do with being President? I thought we were voting for the President of the USA here not the Pope or the next Billy Graham. Romney is an excellent candidate and has outstanding values. He is right on with the issues. Huckabee is clueless to what it really takes to get this country on the right path and his ideas have no real stamina. As a side note...who are we to say Mormons are Christian or not? They say they are Christian and they are the ones that know what they beleive best. Not that has ANYTHING to do with the politics.
Posted by: JH | Feb 5, 2008 3:56:31 PM
I am a Mormon. I believe and except Jesus Christ as my personal savior. Just like 14 million other members of my faith. Please stop posting that we are not Christians because we are. We talk of Christ, We rejoice in Christ, We teach of Christ so that our children my know where to look for a remission of their sins.

looks like another hack job. come on, bret and teddy... finish the story. tell us about how dole has confirmed that he never intended for this letter to be exploited as mccain's camp has done (making it sound like an endorsement) and that he has said that romney doesn't owe him any apology. he has also reiterated the fact that he and mccain come down very differently on a wide variety of issues. mccain's disingenousness is sickening. your facilitating it is inexcusable.

Angela: Please go back and look at history, Most state constitutions state that a citizen is obligated to vote based on the man's convictions and private belief in god and his son Jesus. read some of the publications written by some of the founding fathers and you'll see the same referrences. You'll also find the some of the founding fathers help write the same state constitutions I'm reffereing to. it is considered our duty to vote for upright religious men. It's also the duty of the Electoral College to install the man that is upright and moral, in the event that the general population makes a mistake and elects an immoral man.
People need to read their the history books. the very first session ov congress was an 8 hour prayer session. All these men that wrote our Declaration and Constitution were God fearing men and recgonized that if we were to become a Godless antion this country would soon colapse. Maybe if we followed our civic duty as layed out by our forefathers this country would be what it was intended to be, the most powerful, most wealthy nation on Earth.

Yeah and Mitt Romney is the New George
Romney, you know the Guy who cost
Gerald Ford the 1976 election, by being a horrible VP candidate.
That mistake gave us Jimmy Carter, the Worst President in U.S. History!
The Mistake of Nominating Mitt Romney will give us the enduring nightmare of a Hillary Clinton Presidency!
She will make Vladamir Putin look like a
supporter of Democracy!

Erin: You don't know what you're talking
about! Romney is the Hillary Clinton of the Republican Party!
When he ran for office in Massachusetts he said he would be more pro-gay rights than Ted Kennedy!
As governor of Massachusetts he passed and signed a carbon copy of hillary's healthcare plan!
He has only recently converted to being pro-life!
Romney is a Fraud and a Phony, in other words a Democrat! Those are the facts!

Those who continue to say that Mitt Romney is not a Christian are fools. You apprently know absolutely nothing about his faith only something you have heard from a non-believer. Get educated!
Posted by: cswensen | Feb 5, 2008 6:08:53 PM
reaganfan: Everyone knows that once Romney changed is position on abortion, he always was on the side of life. Also, he health care plan is completely different from Hillary care. Why isn't anyone talking about McCains flip flops??? He is the true flip flopper because he has changed his positions while running for President.. These are the facts...

reaganfan, what are you smoking?: "Yeah and Mitt Romney is the New George
Romney, you know the Guy who cost
Gerald Ford the 1976 election, by being a horrible VP candidate."
George Romney wasn't Ford's running mate, it was BOB DOLE.

Romney:According to an economic study done of his term in Massachusetts had 3rd Lowest economic growth, 3rd Lowest job growth with 3rd highest Population-decrease. Only the Katrina states did worse.
Huckabee:Wants to amend the Constitution to reflect his beliefs. That is a violation of the 1st Amendment to the Bill of Rights:CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW RESPECTING AN ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGION...
McCain:Wants to continue the fail policies of Bush. Bush stopped going after the real criminals of 9/11, Bin laden, al Qaeda, Taliban. Bush and the Republicans are responsible for al Qaeda and Taliban getting stronger and spreading. Bush led us away from our goal.
Republicans do business with Lobbyists. Lobbyists are foreign oil interests, Hallaburton, major corporations, conglomerates, big businesses, investors and investing firms, banks and financial institutions both foreign and domestic. That is why they stopped going after bin laden, al Qaeda, and taliban.
Hillary has done and will do business with Lobbyists, she will do what thy tell her. She learned well from her republican senator father, Senator Rodan.
Obama does not have lobbyists, he does not have to do what they say. Obama will put us back on the trail of AL QAEDA, TALIBAN, AND BIN LADEN. Obama is hope. YES WE CAN!

I hear most GOP supporters want "shared" values. Greed, bigotry, wearmongering, torture, deficits forever are just a few of those wonderful shared values. Destruction of the Constitution is another shared value. Ron Paul disavows these warped unAmerican values. Vote Ron Paul, not another Bush clone. Never ever a Born Again talking to God President ever again!

If you vote for a candidate because your pastor told you so,your a sheeple. You shouldn't be allowed to vote. Sheeples who blindly follow their pastors and Rush should not vote!Sheeples are what put Bush in office.

I find it hard to support anyone (McCain) who needs to lie and manipulate the voters to win and who admitted to having multiple affairs when married to his first wife, someone that has WEAK views on the economy and immigration. And I also find it hard to support someone (Huckabee) who stays in the race just to take away votes from another candidate. That is NOT American, nor is it respectable or honorable. ***MITT ROMNEY for president. The ONLY one that is a strong conservative, the ONLY one with strong family values, the ONLY one that has the best qualifications/experience to lead this county, and the ONLY one to tell the truth.

Anyone that puts down anyones religion should be ASHAMED of yourselves. There's a lot to be said of the old saying "treat others as you'd like to be treated" -- as cliche as that is, it's true. People are so critical, stereotypical, and judgemental of things they do not understand. One of the things that America prides itself on is out FREEDOM. Freedom of speech, press, RELIGION... etc. How UNAMERICAN of all the people saying that a Mormon shouldn't be president, or a Southern Baptist shouldn't be president..etc. SHAME ON YOU!!
Posted by: christy | Feb 5, 2008 8:02:01 PM
I finally stopped laughing at all these obsessed fanatics that think its necessary to have a devout christian of the protestant rearing in office. Nevermind he may be a total idiot, subconsciously driving our forces to Armageddon, handing out all the candy to his constituents all the while draining the economy doing it, and will leave the office to another idiot that will only shuffle the dirt around our graves and call it change. Im tired of this sort of mentality; do us ALL a favor and leave your religion in church and home. The White House is not a house of worship.
Posted by: ibedawon | Feb 5, 2008 8:14:03 PM
As a non-Christian, I find all of the revisionist history trying to justify the US as a Christian-only nation deplorable. I love my country. I agree that we are a Christian nation, but also that we're a Muslim nation, a Jewish nation, a Hindu nation, and an atheist nation. Our founding fathers, who are so often misquoted or taken out of context, were trying to govern a nation that was composed of people fleeing religious persecution. They deliberately tried to eliminate religion from consideration for office... "there shall be no religious test..." Read the Constitution - in my mind THAT is the holiest document in the USA, and THAT is the only document that the president swears an OATH to uphold. Evaluate candidate based on their ability to uphold our constitution and keep us a nation of laws, not men. That is working to serve the FOunding Fathers' vision.
Posted by: hamilton | Feb 5, 2008 9:04:46 PM
I'll say it one more time so you all understand. Romney IS a Christian in EVERY sense of the word. To say or imply anything differently means you haven't invested a minute or two to understand his beliefs. He is a member of the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints". Why is there even a question?
That said, I agree with others that we should be focused on the issues and their character not their religion. If you lean conservative then vote for Romney. If you lean more to the left then vote for McCain.

This is who Id vote for most qualified to least:
1. Obama
2. Romney
3.

Religion is not the issue, it's about principles and experience as an executive. Mike Huckabee had a great night -- and he represents the conservative choice.
Posted by: Dave J | Feb 5, 2008 11:12:59 PM
Huckabee is the real conservative choice. It's time to stop giving Romney more credit than he deserves, and let him take off that conservative mantel that's been forced on him, that doesn't fit. Huckabee can win if rest of the conservatives get behind him before it's too late. Don't waste your vote on the slick salesman Romney.
Posted by: alan | Feb 6, 2008 12:21:29 AM
McCain is a democrat in republican clothing. Romney has spent more than most americans will ever see in their lifetime to win each delegate, and is still not winning like he should be for that kind of money. He spent 1.16 MILLION PER DELEGATE as reported by Fox News yesterday. Huckabee has not stooped to name-calling or hateful comments like both Romney and McCain have. He is truly conservative, and his record speaks for itself. He did wonders in Arkansas with their budget (200 million deficit to 800 million surplus in 10 years), and will do the same for all of us if we give him a chance.
And who does Romney think he is to say that any candidate has stayed in this race just to take away votes from him. If everyone remember correctly, Huckabee won the first state to hold a primary, and has done pretty well since then. Romney is just mad because he has spent 20 times more money than Huck, and has not done any better than Huck has. Get over it Romney, if Huck had the same resources as you, he would be winning over McCain and stomping you. The people who know about him believe in him completly, which is something you have not been able to accomplish except in Mormon country. Huck has ALL christian denominations/religions backing him. You can't say the same. Time to quit kicking a dead dog. No matter how much money you throw at this race, you won't even win the vice-pres nomination. Save some face and drop out. It would be for your own good. I think you are probably a good man, you just don't have the appeal to most Americans you need.

I love to see all you "Nut" Jobs talk. I personally can NEVER vote for another Republicain. I voted for John in 00' but we got stuck with Bush. I am proud I did not vote for Bush either time. He made me a Demo. for live. I live in Ohio and I remember seeing bumper stickers saying "Ohio the state that saved a nation in 04'" Now you see all these used to be Rep.'s talking like they did not vote that #### ### in. We do not need any more Rep. in office this wave that we need someone that reads the same bible as I do it stupid. I love to hear you nuts talk and I hope you keep splitting the vote now. We need a BIG change in direction and we need it yesterday.......

Huckabee the "minister" has shown his true slimy character in the negative and condescending way he attacks his opponents. He has truly learned and practices the back-stabbing politics of Washington. His huge ego definitely has blurred his understanding of "pride goeth before the fall." His back-biting words are not consistent with what he professes to believe.
Posted by: KS | Feb 6, 2008 12:45:00 PM
Mccain is a moderate republican an is nothing wrong with that, he is old but being all gives him ground for making crucial decisions, and I personally like the calm way around him everytime that he defenses his point, we need a good leader that brings to the board the right people and Mccain has wisdom and because he has been involved in the white House doesn't mean that he has blame on what is happening right now, Clinton sold the industrial economy to China years ago and what is happening right now with immigration is being happening for the past century, the spending that Bush has made on War was important for our national security, but everything that happens right now are the results of many mistakes in the past 25 years...Putin the president of Russia is going to be a problem, just read history book, it repeats all the time, we need a solid president that doesn't become a chicken without head when he manages himself with words, we don't need a church preacher like Obama that the core of his speeches is HOPE and CHANGE, because all we know that it is hope in our hearts and it has to be a change, because the way we are can't continue....

Mitt may accuse whoever he wants, cry as much as he wants and spend as much of his own money as he wants. The truth is he is not the best candidate and will never win. His tactics made everyone sick, he won no contested state which is not his home state so far (Wyoming, Nevada - or Michigan), yet he has enough bravado to require Huckabee to drop out. Mike is the best GOP candidate and the only chance for republican party to win. And he is going to win against all odds (not an unprecedented case though as Ronald Reigan himself was not a frontrunner, nor considered by any mainstream media as a serious contender) because you cannot buy such supporters as Mike's.
Posted by: Sas Tarr | Feb 6, 2008 8:07:51 PM
Be glad Mitt earned his money and is spending it wisely on a campaign he CAN WIN! The media talking heads have had it wrong all agong, I trust you won't believe they finally have it right. It is so tiresome hearing about McCain being the front runner. Where is he running to? I hope Mexico will welcome him when he loses. He's done more for Mexico than the USA. Perhaps back to the Keating Five. And being a POW isn't a war hero. Getting captured doesn't translate into war hero. And he admits he isn't smart enough to run the country, he admits he doesn't understnad economics. Who is he kidding saying he can hire Managers. If he doesn't understand the economy it doesn't matter how many managers he hires. McCain is just an arrogant old Senator who voted against every Bush tax cut and is proposing a solution to global warming by proposing another .50 cent gas tax in a time when we are facing an economic slow down. McCains lack of leadership on issues that matter to Republicans for all these years and the bills he has brought forth in the Senate should be a warning of what a McCain stint as CIC would look like. I will not vote for McCain! Republicans must remember that we still have a choice. Remember that we have separation of church and state. We the people must overcome Religious bias and vote Romney so we will have a qualified CIC. May God Continue To Bless America!

No government or country in the history of the world has ever survived the crashing waves of destruction once it is adrift in a boat filled with the ballasts of socialism. The "Change" that Obama and Clinton are perporting is nothing more than democractic socialism. They may paint stripes on the donkey and call it a zebra, but stripes do not a zebra make. We as Americans have enjoyed prosperity and freedom because our founding fathers were wise enough to form a government of checks and balances to keep big government from becoming more powerful that the people. It would behove us to put all difference and party loyalties aside and vote for those that will support and fight for traditional values and the true intention of our founding fathers when creating our great constitution. History has taught us that every time that the federal government gets involved in matters of the private sector such as healthcare, housing, education, etc. it ends up taking power from the people and destroying the natural balance that free enterprise provides to us all. I am not Republican or Democrat, but I am an independent thinker that knows the value of freedom and traditional moral values in government. It is quite obvious to me who has the most moral marrow in his bones. This is Americas most important election, I hope that future history will testify that the American people gave Wisdom a chance and voted to preserve the tradition, intent and values of our founding fathers in the 2008 elections. If not, may God save us from ourselves.

This message (Politics 101) is for those of you who think Sen. John McCain doesn’t stand a chance to become our next president. First, anyone who studies politics knows that caucuses (republicans or democrats) are used to narrow the field of candidates by “weeding out” those candidates who fail to appeal to a party’s base; the fact that Sen. McCain is the clear frontrunner speaks volumes to the man’s broad appeal despite the so called “expert political pundits” referring to him as a democrat in conservative clothing. Second, people who vote in caucuses comprise a fraction of the voting public and, almost exclusively, tend to be each party’s “hardliners”, but NOT a clear representation of how the rest of the public will cast their vote in an election; again, the fact that Sen. McCain is still there and has emerged as the “Top Gun” DOES mean he has majority support even among the “hardliners” of the republican party. Third, the “hardliner” political bases of both parties constitute, at best, less than 20 percent of the total vote, leaving the remaining 80-plus percent of the voting block that decides WHO the next president WILL be, NOT the “hardliners”, and most certainly NOT the pundits. Fourth, more often than not, to get the “party” nomination a candidate’s platform/message both before and during the caucuses usually has to be very liberal or very conservative (depending on which party they’re in), but not always; Sen. McCain realizes that “politics as usual” will NOT get you elected president this time around… apparently so does a majority of the hardliners! Last, but not least, to garner a majority of the popular vote in any election means you MUST have a platform/message which appeals to that 80-plus percent, and Sen. McCain does; far more than Romney and Huckabee.
I believe that people in this country are sick and tired of the “politics as usual” way things are done in Washington, D.C., and as such, are ready for a candidate who will put aside partisan politics and do what’s best for all Americans; again, apparently so does a majority of the conservative “hardliners”! Americans do want change, just NOT some “preacher wannabe” (Obama) with a lot of promises and NO real plan, and most certainly NOT a rewind of “Clinton Politics” with P.M.S.; most Americans want someone who will work with the other side to get the job done, and Sen. McCain is that person. For those of you who let the pundits do your thinking, or those of you who would waste your vote and allow another “flaming liberal” in the White House again, if you do then think about this, after you look at your ever-shrinking take-home pay, that sensation you’ll be feeling in you posterior will be that “taxed-to-death liberal spending spree” the democrats will surly go on thanks to you…

Dole states, "I cannot recall a single instance when he (McCain) did not support the Party on critical votes."
Notice the adjective "critical". What does that mean? It means McCain favored the liberal side and democrates except those few times when Dole thought it was "critical". And Dole lost the election.
The most conservative candidate is Ron Paul, but the "establishment" wants to keep us in fear and be slaves via the IRS.
Those who claim to be Christians, yet can't wait to kill people are the worse hypocrites. And McCain is the worse of them all, singing bomb bomb bomb Iran and he thinks it is OK for the US to continue the occupation of Iraq for 100 years. How would you like it if China was occupying the USA?
