Romney Not Dead Yet
February 06, 2008 2:06 PM
ABC News' John Berman, Ursula Fahy and Matt Stuart Report: Mitt Romney, R-Mass., is still running for president. With words that did not thunder with confidence, Romney's spokesman told reporters, "The governor's statement from last night is still operative. He is in this race until the convention."
Romney met with advisers for several hours in his Boston campaign office Wednesday morning.
Spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said, "John McCain had a good night. That doesn't mean Mitt Romney had a bad night."
Just after 1pm, Romney could be seen through his office window addressing a gathering inside. One aide called it "a pep talk to staff."
Romney will speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C. on Thursday before returning to the campaign trail.
Some spin from advisers includes: "McCain is getting base resistance. In some states, Huck helped us by taking McCain votes."
Another comment: "We won one less state than McCain... and we have a lot more money." (This aide might have been off by a state or two)
Meanwhile, a UPS postal carrier delivered several boxes labeled as extra-large, navy-blue, "Romney for President" sweatshirts.

Uh NO Mitt, you and Huckster are splitting your support base and allowing McCain to win, with non-conservatives. You two are actually enabling John to win with the media, and the non-conservatives. I'm sure that the Democrats will be greatful to you for helping a fellow Democrat win the nomination to run against the corporate Democrat named Hilliary. But then again, who really cares when there's five Democrats running in the two parties. Nice to see that big media was able to marginalize and eliminate all of the conservaties for the nomination fight. Just don't expect real Republicans to waste their time picking between a Democrat with R next to their name; Vs. the Democrat who's running with the D. Real Republicans will stay home and Hilliary will win. After all what's good for big buisness is what's good for America. Just NOT the American people.

Hey-Ben, when the GOP elephant is released back into the wild, it will die, because it won't be able to survive in a liberal environment. It will fear the actual freedom and long for it's improper management and neglect.

Put a fork in him. Marvelous Mitt is done.
He's spent a bazillion dollars on marketing, messaging and campaigning. And he still can't break through. He did however win a poll for the candidate that folks would most like to beat up. Guess that's something.
He should just step aside and make this a two way race between Huck and McCain.

Just so everyone knows the Romney aid had it right here is the breakdown for last night.
HUCKABEE: AL, AR, GA, TN, WV
MCCAIN: AZ, CT, DE, IL, MO, NJ, NY, OK
ROMNEY: AK, CO, MA, MN, MT, ND, UT
That is Huckabee 5, McCain 8 and Romney 7.
And, for every one that now thinks this should be a McCain-Huckabee race now (what a love fest that would be) Huckabee still trails Romney by close to 100 delegates, has won fewer states and only wins states with large evangelical populations.
Romney on the other hand has show that he can reach out to many different demographics and has consistently won the most conservative voters over. States where he is know best tend to overwhelmingly vote for Romney (hey maybe they know something the media isn't feeding you, i.e. the flip-flop myth). That is more than Huckabee and McCain who each had a run for their money in their own home states.
Even if Romney doesn't end up winning the nomination, which may happen, at least he will have his integrity. As those who know him best will attest, at the end of the day Romney will still be the incredibly successful, crazy smart, honest, family man that he has always been. What a shame if it turns out that this is not what America is looking for.

What is wrong with all you Americans???? Romney is the only candidate that will bring this country back to where it should be. e is the one with all the experience and the best person for the job. McCain is OLD school and admits he is no knowledge about economics . Actually he lied about that during debate. A reporter found two articles where he did say exactly that. Wake up Amercia....This year more than ever we need someone who can get this country back on its feet. McCain is not the man. Mitt is.
Posted by: irishme | Feb 6, 2008 3:52:45 PM
Romney and Huckabee defeated each other, they need to combine forces and beat McCain. I doubt that will happen, because McCain has Huckabee in his back pocket an example Georgia. Romney is the true conservative, look at the vote in Arizona McCain's home state. McCain is in trouble with the conservatives in the Republician party. He will need them to beat the Democrates.
Posted by: Mark | Feb 6, 2008 4:01:12 PM
I apologize, it seem the list I pulled left out California which would have put McCain at 9 states.
The rest of my post stands.

On Romney
"That is more than Huckabee and McCain who each had a run for their money in their own home states."
What a load of you know what that stinketh greatly.
There was a serious HuckaBEATDOWN in Arkansas administered to Mischievous Mitt.
Mitt Romney is a phony. Mitt will say anything and do anything to get your vote. Voters are figuring this out. Mitt is not going anywhere.
But maybe if he make nice, Huck might consider him for Assistant to the Treasury undersecretary position or ambassador to France or something like that.
Posted by: The Commander Guy | Feb 6, 2008 4:15:57 PM
A Huckabee Romney team-up seems highly unlikely mostly because Huckabee is almost as liberal as McCain. His only 2 issues where he has been a consistent conservative are being pro life and against gay marriage. Lucky for him these are 2 very important concerns for evangelical voters or he would be totally lost.
That fact that Huckabee only wins in the states that have a large evangelical population and constantly losses in other demographics says mountains about why Huckabee is garnering any of the conservative votes at all.
Evangelicals have historically voted conservative so there has either been a considerable shift in their voting preferences, they are so enamored by Huckabee's identity politics that they think having an evangelical candidate is more important than looking at actual issues or they just don't want that Mormon to be our next president.
Personally it seems that it is a combination of the last two. I have to believe that if Huckabee wasn’t a Baptist Minister he would not be in this race. Please, find some polls or facts that prove me wrong.
In any case this is why it is highly unlikely that Romney could ever combine forces with Huckabee. Besides Huckabee has too much man love for McCain right now, watch a debate or two is you don't believe me.

It's so interesting to read the posts of those who claim to be Christian. It amazes me that there was ever a question about Mr. Romney's faith when it's all of Huckabee's supporters that spout such unChristian venom. Even Dr. Dobson endorsed Mr. Romney, so I voted for him and would do so again, very proudly.
Posted by: Samantha | Feb 6, 2008 4:31:32 PM
Mike Huckabee is a dishonest preacher who continues to vulgarly lie that he and John McCain are in "a two man race", despite the fact that oleaginous Huckabee is in third place in states and in delegates won. A lying preacher wants to be president and his sniveling, illiterate apologists are clamoring for him on abc.com.

To The Commander Guy | Feb 6, 2008 4:15:57 PM you’re right I was wrong on this one. Huckabee did kick some expletive in his home state. Thank you for correcting me.

Cheap Shot on the Huck by Jake. So many hurtful comments.
But I am just going to take a page out of a book that Huck like to read and turn the other cheek to the HATE.
I will say this however, with Huck, what you see is what you get. He says what he means and means what he says. You are not going to get a guy who changes his positions on the issues in odd and even years.
Yeah I know he's been criticized for being compassionate to those in need. But that's just the type of guy he is. He ain't gonna change just because some poll tells him that compassion is not popular.
Huck is the real deal. He can beat HRC. Romney can't.
Nuff said.

Mitt,
Tom Brady lost too but no one is telling him to quit football.
You should keep up the debate. Your message is good and great.

Yep. And come this November there is gonna be an all out Arkansas Battle Royale that Hill and Bill ain't gonna like one bit.

Layne Pitcher caterwauled "Cheap Shot on the Huck by Jake". Yet, she was not able to refute her hero Mike Huckabee's vulgar lying that he is in "a two man race" with John McCain, despite being in third place in states and delegates won.
Posted by: Jake | Feb 6, 2008 5:00:59 PM
To The Commander Guy | Feb 6, 2008 4:47:17 PM. So when Huckabee wants to give scholarships to the children of illegal immigrants and pushes for provide drivers licenses to illegal immigrates before he runs for president And then starts talking tough on immigration half way through his run for presidency, even saying he would be against the children of illegal immigrant’s being able to claim citizenship because they are born here, you are saying that isn't "a guy who changes his positions on the issues in odd and even years" that’s "compassionate".
Please don't insult our intelligence.

It was interesting last night to see Glenn Beck ask Huckster why he was going after Romney since McCain is the front runner. His answer was that Romney drew first blood and actually had an ad about his record. So, Beck asked him "So it's all about revenge?" It would seem that most of Huckster's constituency would seem to be on his bandwagon for his social views (unless they really like releasing felons). Yet the one man that has thumbed his nose at those values is none other than John McCain. Where's the furvor for McCain-Feingold that denied Wisconsin Right to Life of their voice? Where's the outrage that McCain doesn't support the marriage amendment? (btw..Romney does) Where's the outrage that McCain has come out and said he doesn't care about social issues?
Yes...Huckster fans..that's who you are electing. Do you really think those values are valued by McCain? Or do you really care? Maybe Huck gets you more fired up to bash Romney, play the Mormon card or contrast himself to Mitt being successful...heaven forbid people actually be successful. I talked to one Huck supporter at my office and said he would really like for him to start to act like he's running for president and not McCain's VP/wingman.

Sorry, Layne Pitcer. I accidentally attributed The Commander Dunce's statement to you. I wonder what he commands, considering that he is condoning Mike Huckabee, who waddled to Iowa and giggled that he is Christian, then decided to quit mentioning that in advertisements in New Hampshire.
Posted by: Jake | Feb 6, 2008 5:11:45 PM
Jake, I'm a man, I'm for Mitt Romney and I believe you are right when you said "Mike Huckabee is a dishonest preacher who continues to vulgarly lie that he and John McCain are in "a two man race"". You may be confusing me with The Commander Guy.
Just wanting to clarify in case there was any confusion.

Except a miracle happens the republican contest is technically over but theoretically open. If Mitt has the means and resource that won’t hurt him he should go for it.

Mitt is a flopper but I will take him Huck or McCain over Clinton any day. I feel bad for Mitt since he spent so much money and would actually like to vote for him in the primary next month. But, I need to save my vote for Obama against Hillary. However, you all have my vote if Hillary is the nominee. Good-luck to your party

Janice | Feb 6, 2008 7:09:58 PM I am glad you would like to support Mitt Romney but you are falling into the flip-flop myth that has been perpetuated by the media and Romney's competitors.
Sometimes things are repeated so much that people start just assuming it is true. Unfortunately this happens to be one of those things and those apposed to Romney have taken advantage of this.
Romney did change on abortion. He admitted this change and has never gone back. In other words one flip. Many of the other charges of flip-flopping are perpetuated by misquotes and sometimes outright lies.
Let me share one thing that I have learned watching this race. If you are ever looking for a real conservative look for the person the media constantly knocks down, counts out or never props up. This year that is Mitt Romney. Every other Republican candidate has enjoyed the media lime light. Currently McCain and even Huckabee to some extent are enjoying this.
Just look at how the media has exaggerated Huckabee's performance last night where he took less states and less delegates than Romney but all the media can talk about is how Huckabee swept the south. I have heard many reports where all they mention for Romney is his win in MA, sometimes in the same sentence as the former.
McCain they have been calling the frontrunner since SC but where has that got him. A closely contested race that still has a good chance of going on till the end even after Super Tuesday.
Romney has been a major competitor in the race from the beginning, and in so being, he has had to take on every competitor. The media has not been his friend. Some have even stooped to spreading mistruths about his faith. Many have admitted that his faith is the reason they will not vote for him. And, it seems that every day there is another liberal media talking head saying that he is down for the count. Given all this and more, it says something about the character of the man who can go through all that and continue be a major force in this race, still championed by many. I feel proud to be a supporter of Mitt Romney.

Romney gave an outstanding speech last night compared to McCain embarrassingly weak one. He is by such a great degree the best candidate on both sides of the table. He has earned a tremendous amount of respect for his honesty, values, integrity, good judgement from those that have gotten to know him. One Belmont, MA resident (his hometown) just spoke on NPR of his HONESTY and that was one of the many reasons he should be president. I agree, along with the fact that he is capable, intelligent, experienced and energetic (not volatile like McCain). The press has downplayed so many aspects of his successes. It just shows more how strong he is. I'm a Massachuestts resident - he accomplished more here than most governors could in longer terms. Thank you MITT!! We're with you!!

Poor Ol Jake got some big time Hate in his heart for the Humble Huck.
I do have to question Jake's Judgment with his unabashed support for Willard "Mitt" Romney, however.
As Michael Barone says, today in the WSJ Online, Mitt is a Phony. In his words:
"Mr. Romney re-engineered his persona for cultural conservatives, just as roving CEOs may re-engineer their personas for the different corporate cultures of the companies they head. The conservative editors of National Review, like the Catholic Church, welcome converts, and Rush Limbaugh was happy to endorse a newcomer who stands firmly on the three-legged stool of economic, cultural and foreign-policy conservatism. But Mr. Romney has done well only on home turf -- in his home states (Michigan, Massachusetts, Utah) or high-income enclaves (Naples, Fla.) that resemble his native Bloomfield Hills, Mich."
And the reason he's only done well on home turf is because, as Brother Barone points out, Mitt is a phony. Folks can see through the guy. Mitt does well in Jon Cary turf, because Mitt is to the LEFT of his fellow Massachusetts liberal. Folks can see he's just faking being a conservative in order to be elected. I mean the guy's name is Willard not Mitt. Everything about him is made up.
Now you may not like Huck. That's fine. But at least with Huck, what you see is what you get.

On behalf of any Huck supporters that have said unkind things about Mormons, I offer you and all others an appology.
I have never met a mormon that I did not like. True statement. There is no place for such unkind statements in civil society.

Layne Pitcher,
I agree with you regarding the media, those people are out of control. I hope Mitt decides to stay in. Regradless, you guys have my support - with either of the remaining candidates - with the exception of Paul. I like paul even some of his ideas but, he does seem a bit radical in his ideas.
Anyway, you all have my support b/c under no circumstances will I vote for Hillary.....
Again, good-luck and best wishes to your party.
Regards,
Janice

The Commander Guy,
Michael Barone is just repeating something that has been said so many times that it is now taken as the truth regardless of the facts.
It may help to re-read my Feb 6, 2008 8:09:20 PM post as I already discussed this. The media has been no friend of Romney because he is the real conservative and because he would have posed the greatest threat to Democrats next fall. Many of the quotes that media persons referred to when this myth was in its infancy have be proved to been out of context much like McCain’s current bold faces lie about Romney's record on staying the course in Iraq. Yet, the media continues to replicate the flip-flop accusation that has been repeated so much now that it has a life of its own..
Also you are right on one point. "With Huck, what you see is what you get" and I see a man who has had multiple ethics inquiries while he served as Governor, a man who destroys all the computer files and equipment before he leaves office for some unknown reason, a man who has pardoned more criminals, sometimes for possibly questionable reasons, than the 2 previous Governors combined, a man who even though he is a Baptist minister who has given speeches at anti-Mormon conferences still claims that he did not now that common slandering questions about Mormon theology would be offensive, a man who instead of talking issues, presented himself as the Christian candidate (would this have been acceptable if he where running against a Catholic, or Jewish candidate), a man that even though he accuses his opposition of going negative tried to lie to everyone when he pulled an ad off the air in a supposed effort to be positive while then showing it at a press conference knowing full well that the media would do the dirty work for him, a man who when he had decided to shift his positions on issues such as immigration or has been called on questionable past comments continues to be unapologetic, stubborn, and dismissive of his changes or past stances.
If this is the man you want for President of the United State, you may deserve him.
The man I'm voting for has changed his position on abortion and admitted his mistake learned from it and supported his change in his tenure as Governor. He is a man who has done his best to keep his promises he has made while running for office. He is a man who has made a successful living turning around companies, the Olympics, and one state. All who know him personally respect him and will tell you that he is himself respectful, honest, caring, crazy smart, and the hardest worker they have ever known.
I know that there is now a slim chance that that this man will even have the chance to even run for President of the United States but it is not every day we get the chance to vote for a man like this. A proud supporter of Mitt Romney.
Posted by: Layne Pitcher | Feb 7, 2008 12:12:53 PM
One more thing Mitt Romney does well on his home turf not because he is a "phony" but because those who know him the best and those who have been close enough to have seen what he can do, know he is anything but a "phony". Your argument makes no sense at all. Mitt Romney is the real deal and his support at home proves it.
Posted by: Layne Pitcher | Feb 7, 2008 12:35:53 PM
reaganfan - I am one of those who will not vote for a Republican who acts like a Democrat. If we are out of step, then I can accept that. It is better in my opinion to let the Democrats have this one rather than risk letting moderates and liberals turn the Republican party into a shadow of the Democratic Party. It now seems that this is the choice we are forced to make.
Posted by: Layne Pitcher | Feb 7, 2008 1:39:50 PM
Layne
Fork time for Willard. Just as I called.
Look - Glad you have passion for your guy. I read your stuff. But I disagree. The guy changes his positions as often as he changes suits. FOR Crying out loud, he attacked Hillary for proposing a health care plan LIKE the plan he imposed in Taxachusetts. He attacks his oponnents for holding positions he USED to hold.
The other GOP candidates HATED the guy for this reason and more.
Sorry Man. This is the truth. He's just not the REAL DEAL.
Now you can look elsewhere. McCain or Huck. Both are honorable people. Or you can sit out and instead support your local legislative candidate.
Posted by: The Commander Guy | Feb 7, 2008 4:41:54 PM
Layne Pitcher: You say that you can't vote for a republican who acts like a Democrat and you supported Mitt Romney!
The Mitt Romney who passed Hillary Clintons Healthcare bill in Massachusetts! You supported the
Mitt Romney who said he would be more
pro-gay rights than Ted Kennedy!
The Mitt Romney who dissed Ronald Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush!
The Mitt Romney who only recently became a pro-lifer!
That my friend is a Democrat!
Sitting home and Holding your breath like a baby will allow the Dems to win and reverse the Bush Tax cuts and destroy the country! Is it worth it?
