Mitt Romney Endorses John McCain
February 14, 2008 1:32 PM
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos and John Berman Report: Former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., today endorsed his former Republican rival Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. The endorsement took place this afternoon at Romney for President headquarters in Boston.
Romney asked his delegates to throw their support to McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
"Even when the contest was close and our disagreements were debated, the caliber of the man was apparent," Romney said, standing with McCain for the announcement at his now-defunct campaign's headquarters in Boston. "As a party, we come together."
Accepting Romney's endorsement, McCain said despite a "hard campaign" now "we move forward together for the good of our party and the nation."
Once bitter rivals locked in an acrimonious Republican nomination fight, Romney abandoned his 2008 bid following a poor showing in the Super Tuesday contests this month. Romney had won the support of many in the conservative wing of the party, but failed to overtake McCain in either delegates or the number of state wins.
The former governor made his decision to endorse today in the interest of helping McCain gain the 1,191 delegates he needs to secure the party nomination and unite the party for the general election against the Democrats in November.
Romney campaign manager Beth Myers notified McCain campaign manager Rick Davis in a telephone call today of Romney's decision, and they immediately made arrangements for an announcement in Boston this afternoon since McCain was campaigning in Rhode Island today.
After McCain's townhall meeting near Providence this afternoon, the campaign is flying to Boston for the endorsement.
Romney and McCain will meet today before they both announce the formal endorsement at a press conference.
ABC News' Ron Claiborne and Bret Hovell contributed reporting.

Chucking Romneys delegates at Mc Cain basically ends the campaign. Huckabee can 'say' Romenys delegates dont have to support him, but at this point he is just being a pest. Quit the race already so that republicans can go vote against Cllnton in texas. Isnt that what this is all about ?
The democratic party needs to stop this 'anyone can vote' routine and make them join the democratic party to vote.

Who gives a damn? This makes ABSOLUTELY no difference.

What difference does it really make is right. Do you think any of these candidates are looking out for the citizens of this country or for their own special interests. Doesn't matter if they are Rep or Dem, either.

What ever!! I dont sell my vote because Romney wants to unify against the Democrats. My issue is the illegal aliens and amnesty. McCain has Vicente Fox's Man as his mexican connection and hes for amnesty. I wont vote for him not matter what Romney say. McClueless is the wrong man. His policy has the property value in my neighborhood low and dropping. Why should I vote for a man whose position is wrong just because hes a republican....Wrong....Whatever!~!

Who cares what Romney does, just as long as he is gone.

I'm a Republican, Tom, who shares your pain over the open primaries in Texas and other states. The reason why we have McCain so far ahead is that he does well in states where you don't have to be a registered Republican to vote. Open primaries make as much sense as inviting all of your neighbors to vote on what color you should paint your interior walls and where you should put the couch. If you want to vote in the primaries, join the party!

John McCain should consider making Mitt Romney is VP.
Mitt can help win "blue" states like Michigan, Minnesota, and Massachusetts. All states that Mitt won during the primaries.
................GO MITT !

Perhaps this can finally serve to unify the party and convince on-the-fence conservatives to get fully behind McCain. We need a unified party to stop the national security disaster that would be either a President Obama or Clinton II (even typing that makes me shudder).

McCain just found his running mate....in exchange for Romney's delegates.

Rush said Mitt was the only conservative in the race. Now Mitt goes with the liberal, John MCCain. Rush I thought Mitt was a conservative. Mitt Romney is nothing more than a sellout! Who's your conservative boy now, Rush?

Who gives a damn at this point anyway???I'm going fishing in Nov. No one's getting my vote or another penny or another second of volunteering from this point forward.

As if there was going to be a doubt. They want McCain confirmed ASAP so that they can start their national campaign, They have a lot of ground to make up, they only have 9 months to get us so scared of our own shadow that we'll forego the election and just let the President pick his successor.

Why do people have to be racist to vote against Obama?
Whatever you may say, the GOP has a lot of stuff to use in convincing the american people that Obama is not ready to be president.
At this point, the theory that the GOP are in disarray is false.
The only problem which Hillary had was that she prepared for the general elections and not the primaries. She is the only one who is set for a showdown with McCain.
Unless Hillary is the front runner, this election will be very similar to the 1984/1988 elections. The same pattern: an inexperienced person vs a home hero. It ends in a landslide!

Great, endorse the former POW who wants a hundred year war in Iraq and knows nothing about economics. The economy is in the state it is in today because of people like McCain. It is time for a change.

Romney endorses Juan McAmnesty. Our politicians are nothing more than corporate pimps. What a scam on the American people. Democracy huh - 80% of the legal US citizens spoke on this issue and stopped the Shamnesty bill in June. Now who is left 3 scumbags that all support Shamnesty and rewarding illegal lawbreakers that are taking jobs from legal US citizens for less. What a bad joke on good people.
