Mitt Romney Endorses John McCain

Share

February 14, 2008 1:32 PM

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos and John Berman Report: Former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., today endorsed his former Republican rival Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.  The endorsement took place this afternoon at Romney for President headquarters in Boston.

Romney asked his delegates to throw their support to McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

"Even when the contest was close and our disagreements were debated, the caliber of the man was apparent," Romney said, standing with McCain for the announcement at his now-defunct campaign's headquarters in Boston. "As a party, we come together."

Accepting Romney's endorsement, McCain said despite a "hard campaign" now "we move forward together for the good of our party and the nation."

Once bitter rivals locked in an acrimonious Republican nomination fight, Romney abandoned his 2008 bid following a poor showing in the Super Tuesday contests this month. Romney had won the support of many in the conservative wing of the party, but failed to overtake McCain in either delegates or the number of state wins.

The former governor made his decision to endorse today in the interest of helping McCain gain the 1,191 delegates he needs to secure the party nomination and unite the party for the general election against the Democrats in November.

Romney campaign manager Beth Myers notified McCain campaign manager Rick Davis in a telephone call today of Romney's decision, and they immediately made arrangements for an announcement in Boston this afternoon since McCain was campaigning in Rhode Island today.

After McCain's townhall meeting near Providence this afternoon, the campaign is flying to Boston for the endorsement.

Romney and McCain will meet today before they both announce the formal endorsement at a press conference.

ABC News' Ron Claiborne and Bret Hovell contributed reporting.

Chucking Romneys delegates at Mc Cain basically ends the campaign. Huckabee can 'say' Romenys delegates dont have to support him, but at this point he is just being a pest. Quit the race already so that republicans can go vote against Cllnton in texas. Isnt that what this is all about ?

The democratic party needs to stop this 'anyone can vote' routine and make them join the democratic party to vote.

Who gives a damn? This makes ABSOLUTELY no difference.

Posted by: dano | Feb 14, 2008 1:47:32 PM

What difference does it really make is right. Do you think any of these candidates are looking out for the citizens of this country or for their own special interests. Doesn't matter if they are Rep or Dem, either.

Posted by: Fletcher | Feb 14, 2008 1:50:09 PM

What ever!! I dont sell my vote because Romney wants to unify against the Democrats. My issue is the illegal aliens and amnesty. McCain has Vicente Fox's Man as his mexican connection and hes for amnesty. I wont vote for him not matter what Romney say. McClueless is the wrong man. His policy has the property value in my neighborhood low and dropping. Why should I vote for a man whose position is wrong just because hes a republican....Wrong....Whatever!~!

Posted by: Robert | Feb 14, 2008 1:52:05 PM

Who cares what Romney does, just as long as he is gone.

Posted by: TimTom | Feb 14, 2008 1:52:54 PM

I'm a Republican, Tom, who shares your pain over the open primaries in Texas and other states. The reason why we have McCain so far ahead is that he does well in states where you don't have to be a registered Republican to vote. Open primaries make as much sense as inviting all of your neighbors to vote on what color you should paint your interior walls and where you should put the couch. If you want to vote in the primaries, join the party!

Posted by: Rob | Feb 14, 2008 1:55:21 PM

John McCain should consider making Mitt Romney is VP.

Mitt can help win "blue" states like Michigan, Minnesota, and Massachusetts. All states that Mitt won during the primaries.

................GO MITT !

Posted by: Allen Ridge | Feb 14, 2008 1:55:35 PM

Perhaps this can finally serve to unify the party and convince on-the-fence conservatives to get fully behind McCain. We need a unified party to stop the national security disaster that would be either a President Obama or Clinton II (even typing that makes me shudder).

Posted by: Davidtyreeshead | Feb 14, 2008 1:59:39 PM

McCain just found his running mate....in exchange for Romney's delegates.

Posted by: ken | Feb 14, 2008 2:17:11 PM

Rush said Mitt was the only conservative in the race. Now Mitt goes with the liberal, John MCCain. Rush I thought Mitt was a conservative. Mitt Romney is nothing more than a sellout! Who's your conservative boy now, Rush?

Who gives a damn at this point anyway???I'm going fishing in Nov. No one's getting my vote or another penny or another second of volunteering from this point forward.

Posted by: SteveLee | Feb 14, 2008 2:25:17 PM

As if there was going to be a doubt. They want McCain confirmed ASAP so that they can start their national campaign, They have a lot of ground to make up, they only have 9 months to get us so scared of our own shadow that we'll forego the election and just let the President pick his successor.

Posted by: Louis | Feb 14, 2008 2:27:20 PM

Why do people have to be racist to vote against Obama?
Whatever you may say, the GOP has a lot of stuff to use in convincing the american people that Obama is not ready to be president.
At this point, the theory that the GOP are in disarray is false.

The only problem which Hillary had was that she prepared for the general elections and not the primaries. She is the only one who is set for a showdown with McCain.

Unless Hillary is the front runner, this election will be very similar to the 1984/1988 elections. The same pattern: an inexperienced person vs a home hero. It ends in a landslide!

Great, endorse the former POW who wants a hundred year war in Iraq and knows nothing about economics. The economy is in the state it is in today because of people like McCain. It is time for a change.

Romney endorses Juan McAmnesty. Our politicians are nothing more than corporate pimps. What a scam on the American people. Democracy huh - 80% of the legal US citizens spoke on this issue and stopped the Shamnesty bill in June. Now who is left 3 scumbags that all support Shamnesty and rewarding illegal lawbreakers that are taking jobs from legal US citizens for less. What a bad joke on good people.

ps for all you obama lovers out there, fyi: a ton of republicans are pouring money into his campaign and voting for him in the primaries so that he will get the nomination...they know that he will be much easier to beat than hillary :)

It was reported today in the WASHINGTON (AP) that the Republicans are talking of Cutting the interest rate yet again. "The outlook for the economy has worsened in recent months, and the downside risks to growth have increased," Bernanke said. "To date, the largest economic effects of the financial turmoil appear to have been on the housing market, which, as you know, has deteriorated significantly over the past two years or so." Actually Bernanke is being a bit too relunctant to give all the facts regarding the lowering the interest rates and what is really destroying America's Economy. Let me see now, at the end of 2001 Republicans did discuss and quickly lowered the interest rate in time to save the figures from showing a negative in the ending quarter or even a negative on the year of 2001 regarding the economy when the 2002 report of the 2001 economy stats came out. During 2001 High Tech jobs started leaving the country but we did not realize it until in 2002 when we found out 'Why?' it was 'Government Financial Incentives given to Businesses to send American High Tech and other jobs to foreign countries.' More high tech and other American jobs continued to leave the country. By late 2003 the Republicans discussed the lowing of the interest rate and by 2004 another drop of interest rate did occur. An Interest rate cut did happen in September of 2007 and then again in January 2008. Now in February 2008 the Republican Economic experts are talking Interest rate reduction again.

How long will it take the Republican Intellect to understand that 'Giving Government Financial Incentives' to Businesses to send American Jobs overseas to Foreign countries and foreign workers is a very big strain on the American Economy.

"The Working Economy works Only when the people in that Economy are working".

I wish there were words that properly describe this campaign, but there is one good thing coming from it all. Americans are beginning to open up their sleepy little eyes--just a little bit! Some are beginning to see how liberal those who will be running our country are. I would love to know my grandkids are safe at school, my dear America won't be attacked again, or that my home won't be taken from me. I wish I could say that i have confidence that our leaders can do this for us, but it's simple--we can't have the blessings unless we're united and awake.

Posted by: Don | Feb 14, 2008 2:59:28 PM

God help us all... Conservatives have no right to shout if they do not get out an dvote - the dems are out in force 3-1... look at the numbers

Clarification - Rush said FRED Thompson was the only True Conservative - mitt was the closest one left after Fred dropped out.

It is no longer -- of the people by the people -- it is now of the media for the media... sad...

Posted by: mel | Feb 14, 2008 3:04:50 PM

Who cares! First he dispises him and then he supports him. I hate when they do that. Don't trust neither. Romney should have kept quiet...would have kept his integrity intact. GO DEMS!

Posted by: Sal | Feb 14, 2008 3:06:05 PM

Makes me glad I didn't support Romney, just proves that my opinion of him being an idiot is true.

Posted by: Patriot2008 | Feb 14, 2008 3:06:57 PM

Folks, after reading dozens of hot posts, I suggest that what we see in Romney is called political reality. We can have each of the candidates take their segment of the conservative pie and go home, but there'd be nobody left on the ball field to play against the liberals, and they'd win hands down. Mitt's credentials are strengthened by this display of courage, and this is a magnanimous gesture. Whether he did this to be chosen as the VP is hard to tell at this point. I'd almost hope he isn't, for if he isn't it would show Romney did it to strengthen the party and brought his piece of the conservative pie to have a better chance on the ball field against the liberals. On the other hand, I could be more generous with my time and money if Romney is the VP pick, for I'd know McCain would rely on Romney where his strengths fill McCain's weaknesses. And if McCain didn't serve his entire 4 or 8 years, Romney would be an excellent president in his own right, likely winning the next election also.

So does my write-in vote for Romney go for McCain if there's a McCain/Romney ticket??

Posted by: Rockyspoon | Feb 14, 2008 3:13:22 PM

I remember hearing Mitt say,"A vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain!" Mitts just another Washington politician you can't trust. This move by the GOP to coronate McCain just proves that Huckabee is not a part of the Washington political machine. He is ONE OF US...Now that is REAL change! He is strong and steadfast. No one is pushing him around, as everyone can see. By the way, the American public is way to dumbed down about our political process. McCain has to get 1191 at the convention. There are a lot of unbound delegates. After the first vote others are free to change their minds. Watch Huckabee..he has come back every time.

ronny reagan could come from the dead and endorce mccain and mccain will still lose to obama this fall.

IS ROMNEY'S ALLEGED ENDORSEMENT OF McCAIN THE ULTIMATE FLIP-FLOP?

The Gucci Chameleon, "Slick Willard" Mitt Romney apparently will disenfranchise millions of primary voters by attempting to swing his delegate block over to John McCain today.

The pundits will gleefully now declare that McCain + Romney = 1191. Game over.

They will champion a triumph of Wall Street and the country club over Main Street and the countryside.

They will celebrate the "end" of Mike Huckabee's brilliant insurgency and declare him "dead" as a force in the GOP forevermore.

If the reports are true, Romney's "Valentine's Day Massacre" of democracy ought to prove a number of things to GOP conservatives.

Hopefully, all of the conservatives who drank the "talk radio Kool-aide" by supporting Romney as the "great conservative hope" will now see that their "anti-McCain" savior is nothing more than a political opportunist.

Romney, as it turns out, was nothing more than a decoy to stop Mike Huckabee and propel John McCain to the nomination.

Romney is about to commit the "ultimate" flip-flop: from flame-throwing McCain critic to sycophantic McCain lap-dog.

Posted by: speedzzter | Feb 14, 2008 3:28:53 PM

Romney's backing McCain for the same reasons that I'll vote for McCain: 1)National Defense 2) Supreme Court judges. How many decisions by the court have been 5/4? Conservatives have been fighting for decades to swing the balance in the courts and it's probable that the next president will nominate several judges. Those are important enough issues to justify a vote for McCain, even though there are many areas I disagree with.

Romney's next speech...........
Yes, I was against amnesty before I was for it so I have many illegals cutting my grass now.

Will this put McCain at 1191 delegates??
Anyone know?

unitethegop, this is one step to the VP spot for Romney

Posted by: plainsm | Feb 14, 2008 3:56:51 PM

As a Romney supporter, and an AZ native that hates McCain for his illegal immigration issues, this is a tough choice. I'm probably still going to write in Mitt's name rather than vote for McCain...

I still blame Huckabee for Romney's failure in the campaign, but that's politics.

I don't want Romney to be the VP candidate - I'd rather that he ran in 2012 with a clean slate. In the end I hope he's just doing this to increase the tiny chances of a GOP president in '08 and unify the party.

He does look a little like a liberal supporter, thus increasing his "flip flopper" reputation. However, I see his long-term vision: Anybody but a Dem in the White House.

Posted by: Bryan J | Feb 14, 2008 4:49:39 PM

I hate to say this as a Republican my self I think McCain will not win by a land side. McCain has flip/flop about alot of Issues. He is supporting Ilegal immigration. He was for cutting taxes now he sasays he wants to make Bush tax cut permanant. In regards to license for Ilegals it really dont matter thy wont show up to get them. I think it will be a good way to make an idenification in case they hit an American citizen they can go after the them. An Ilegal immigrant is too scared to come and and declare publicly that they are Ilegal.
so thats a lie. Hillary is under invetigation for providing Ilegals in California absentee ballots, back in September. Now thats a crime..Tells you why she let go her Latino campaing manager she does not want the heat. I hope she does not try to do the same in Texas by providing Ilegas immigrants absentee ballots. Hillary thinks that because shes a Clinton shes above the rest. Shame on you Hillary.

Posted by: abee | Feb 14, 2008 5:16:30 PM

I really can't see Romney as McCain's VP pick. I don't see really what it gives McCain. The right didn't really have any love for Romney, he isn't going to help McCain carry any Northern states he doesn't have a chance in anyway. Huckabee would be a much wiser choice. Huckabee's action in the next few days will tell us exactly what he is running for at the moment. If he stays in the race, then actually what he wants in the 2012 nomination, if he steps aside he wants the VP slot.

Although actually I wonder if McCain isn't wiser picking a moderate like Chuck Hagel for VP, and mirroring the Clinton tactic in 1992, especially if Obama is the nominee.

Posted by: markymark | Feb 14, 2008 5:41:11 PM

Hate to tell Yan Ira, but Romney doesn't have a dead naked woman floating around in Lake Chappaqua like Kennedy does (or did he tell the coroner yet?). You actually think Kennedy doesn't tell people want they want to hear, after his and his families personal and political history? Do you really think people are THAT stupid?

Speedzzter, you really need to get a clue- Schmuckabee is the epitome of a loser! Not only does he solely depend on evangelicals to support him against all reason, credentials, and hope, but he's stupid enough to stay in the race just because he has nothing better to do! He obviously doesn't understand how the GOP works (nor does he understand basic arithmetic)and his obstinancy in staying in the race is driven by his need to appear as not the spoiler for Conservatives who wanted Romney (which he was), but also not to reveal to evangicals it was all just a game (which is was). If he thinks he has a future in the GOP, I'd love to sell the delusional dude some property.

Romney did the right thing, while the Democrats are too busy cannibalizing themselves on national t.v. He would make an excellent VP for McCain and an excellent president. Schmuckabee needs a reality check- no liberal or media person will respect him over someone who has a law degree from Harvard (Obama) or law degree from Princeton (Clinton) or a MBA/JD from Harvard (Romney). Cry all you want about "Gucci Chameleon" you just reveal how much a wanna-bee Schuckabee is!

Posted by: michael basham | Feb 14, 2008 7:21:36 PM

Wanting to end open primaries is the same as askimg your party to commit suicide. In the end it will be the moderate undecideds who will pick the president. The strong conservatives will always vote republican, and the strong liberals will always vote republican. If you shun the only undecideds they will inevitably run to the other side where their voice is heard.

Psssssst, cjpb: It's Lake Chapaquitic and I sort of like Huckabee...Now I'm probabaly gonna have to go Obama, because I can't go McCain/Romney and I won't go Hillary. Guess I'm in a hopeless situation. Depends on whether or not Obama taps Oprah for VP. LMOA!Anybody have any suggestions for a good third party (independent) candidate? Now would be the time to speak up. Peace now.

Posted by: michael basham | Feb 14, 2008 7:32:36 PM

Hey folks, this is what party members do when they get beat: they join the rest of the party! It's what Reagan did three times before he won in 1980! Huckabee is on some kind of misguided ego trip. And don't tell me he's doing the right thing! Why doesn't he go back and serve the Lord rather than running around pretending he's "the only real conservative." His only conservative point is abortion. At this point, McCain is the nominee, and when you really take a hard look at the left, McCain is truly the much lesser of three evils. I once thought of a protest vote, but I'm over the emotion. Go with McCain!

Posted by: ComeOn | Feb 14, 2008 7:50:00 PM

Talk about flip flopper: Huckadrone had to have his nose surgically removed from McCain's backside earlier this month. Now he's "the only true conservative"? What a joke! He needs to take his 190 delegates and go back to Arkansas.

Posted by: ComeOn | Feb 14, 2008 7:52:54 PM

Ex-Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan writes in his autobiography: (About Bush Jr and the Republican's incompetent over-spending and waste) "They swapped principle for power. They ended up with neither. They deserved to lose the 2006 election." Of all the presidents with whom he worked, he praises Bill Clinton above all others, saying that Clinton maintained “a consistent, disciplined focus on long-term economic growth.”

Posted by: wilder5121 | Feb 15, 2008 2:43:57 AM

Why should Mitt be able to "give" his delegates to McAmnesty? He dropped out of the race, he should have no say so. If those votes go to anyone else, the VOTERS who cast a ballot for Romney to begin with should be the ones to decide. Frankly, I wish that they'd all go to the "Constitutionalist" candidate, Ron Paul. Even though the media has ignored him lately, his supporters haven't.

Mitt Romney is a class act. Hopefully we haven't seen the end of this great guy.

Maybe McCain will pick MItt as his VP. Mitt could put into play "blue" states like Massachusetts, Michigan, and Minneasota. All states Mitt won in the primary.

Our corrupt MSM wolfpack press gave Mitt the "flip flopper" label not anyone else.

And it's interesting to hear folks beat Mitt over the head with the flip flopper charge when they voted for the "mother of all flip floppers" in 2004 when they voted for John Kerry.

Where am I wrong? .................................GO MITT !

Posted by: Allen Ridge | Feb 15, 2008 8:38:59 AM

"Mitt" is a class act? Maybe a class Neocon act. A draft dodger who, like Bush and his sons, think the way to fight America`s wars is to work on political campaigns rather than serve in the military. Now I guess ugly and uglier, Rush and Coulter (your choice) will try to hop on the McCain bandwagon.

I am dissapointed in reading some of these comments. Mitt Romney care about the republican party. He recognizes how important it is to unite it. He shows his loyalty and faith in the party by endorsing McCain. I am definitely not a John McCain supporter, but as a republican, I recognize that Mitt Romney is doing what he feels is right. He graciously bowed out of the race when he felt it was right, and now he's taking action to unify the party that he believes in. Shame on you people that don't understand this.

Posted by: lynn | Feb 15, 2008 5:32:57 PM

McCain is really going to need someone strong at his right hand. This campaign is going to wear on him and he will need to lean heavily on the VP nominee. Somehow I doubt Romney would stoop low enough to be the attack dog the VP selection traditionally is. I believe Dick Cheney is out of the question.

This is terrific news for Senator McCain and for the Republican Party. If the GOP hopes to retain the White House, Republicans need to unify in support of Senator McCain.Governor Romney understands that Senator McCain is a social and fiscal conservative who would be a much better President than Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.John McCain recognizes that the U.S. needs to win the war against terrorism and that Iraq and Afghanistan are major fronts in that war.
