Mitt Romney Endorses John McCain
February 14, 2008 1:32 PM
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos and John Berman Report: Former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., today endorsed his former Republican rival Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. The endorsement took place this afternoon at Romney for President headquarters in Boston.
Romney asked his delegates to throw their support to McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
"Even when the contest was close and our disagreements were debated, the caliber of the man was apparent," Romney said, standing with McCain for the announcement at his now-defunct campaign's headquarters in Boston. "As a party, we come together."
Accepting Romney's endorsement, McCain said despite a "hard campaign" now "we move forward together for the good of our party and the nation."
Once bitter rivals locked in an acrimonious Republican nomination fight, Romney abandoned his 2008 bid following a poor showing in the Super Tuesday contests this month. Romney had won the support of many in the conservative wing of the party, but failed to overtake McCain in either delegates or the number of state wins.
The former governor made his decision to endorse today in the interest of helping McCain gain the 1,191 delegates he needs to secure the party nomination and unite the party for the general election against the Democrats in November.
Romney campaign manager Beth Myers notified McCain campaign manager Rick Davis in a telephone call today of Romney's decision, and they immediately made arrangements for an announcement in Boston this afternoon since McCain was campaigning in Rhode Island today.
After McCain's townhall meeting near Providence this afternoon, the campaign is flying to Boston for the endorsement.
Romney and McCain will meet today before they both announce the formal endorsement at a press conference.
ABC News' Ron Claiborne and Bret Hovell contributed reporting.

It was reported today in the WASHINGTON (AP) that the Republicans are talking of Cutting the interest rate yet again. "The outlook for the economy has worsened in recent months, and the downside risks to growth have increased," Bernanke said. "To date, the largest economic effects of the financial turmoil appear to have been on the housing market, which, as you know, has deteriorated significantly over the past two years or so." Actually Bernanke is being a bit too relunctant to give all the facts regarding the lowering the interest rates and what is really destroying America's Economy. Let me see now, at the end of 2001 Republicans did discuss and quickly lowered the interest rate in time to save the figures from showing a negative in the ending quarter or even a negative on the year of 2001 regarding the economy when the 2002 report of the 2001 economy stats came out. During 2001 High Tech jobs started leaving the country but we did not realize it until in 2002 when we found out 'Why?' it was 'Government Financial Incentives given to Businesses to send American High Tech and other jobs to foreign countries.' More high tech and other American jobs continued to leave the country. By late 2003 the Republicans discussed the lowing of the interest rate and by 2004 another drop of interest rate did occur. An Interest rate cut did happen in September of 2007 and then again in January 2008. Now in February 2008 the Republican Economic experts are talking Interest rate reduction again.
How long will it take the Republican Intellect to understand that 'Giving Government Financial Incentives' to Businesses to send American Jobs overseas to Foreign countries and foreign workers is a very big strain on the American Economy.
"The Working Economy works Only when the people in that Economy are working".

I wish there were words that properly describe this campaign, but there is one good thing coming from it all. Americans are beginning to open up their sleepy little eyes--just a little bit! Some are beginning to see how liberal those who will be running our country are. I would love to know my grandkids are safe at school, my dear America won't be attacked again, or that my home won't be taken from me. I wish I could say that i have confidence that our leaders can do this for us, but it's simple--we can't have the blessings unless we're united and awake.

Who cares? Another flip-flop for Romney.

God help us all... Conservatives have no right to shout if they do not get out an dvote - the dems are out in force 3-1... look at the numbers
Clarification - Rush said FRED Thompson was the only True Conservative - mitt was the closest one left after Fred dropped out.
It is no longer -- of the people by the people -- it is now of the media for the media... sad...

Who cares! First he dispises him and then he supports him. I hate when they do that. Don't trust neither. Romney should have kept quiet...would have kept his integrity intact. GO DEMS!

Makes me glad I didn't support Romney, just proves that my opinion of him being an idiot is true.

Folks, after reading dozens of hot posts, I suggest that what we see in Romney is called political reality. We can have each of the candidates take their segment of the conservative pie and go home, but there'd be nobody left on the ball field to play against the liberals, and they'd win hands down. Mitt's credentials are strengthened by this display of courage, and this is a magnanimous gesture. Whether he did this to be chosen as the VP is hard to tell at this point. I'd almost hope he isn't, for if he isn't it would show Romney did it to strengthen the party and brought his piece of the conservative pie to have a better chance on the ball field against the liberals. On the other hand, I could be more generous with my time and money if Romney is the VP pick, for I'd know McCain would rely on Romney where his strengths fill McCain's weaknesses. And if McCain didn't serve his entire 4 or 8 years, Romney would be an excellent president in his own right, likely winning the next election also.
So does my write-in vote for Romney go for McCain if there's a McCain/Romney ticket??

I remember hearing Mitt say,"A vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain!" Mitts just another Washington politician you can't trust. This move by the GOP to coronate McCain just proves that Huckabee is not a part of the Washington political machine. He is ONE OF US...Now that is REAL change! He is strong and steadfast. No one is pushing him around, as everyone can see. By the way, the American public is way to dumbed down about our political process. McCain has to get 1191 at the convention. There are a lot of unbound delegates. After the first vote others are free to change their minds. Watch Huckabee..he has come back every time.

IS ROMNEY'S ALLEGED ENDORSEMENT OF McCAIN THE ULTIMATE FLIP-FLOP?
The Gucci Chameleon, "Slick Willard" Mitt Romney apparently will disenfranchise millions of primary voters by attempting to swing his delegate block over to John McCain today.
The pundits will gleefully now declare that McCain + Romney = 1191. Game over.
They will champion a triumph of Wall Street and the country club over Main Street and the countryside.
They will celebrate the "end" of Mike Huckabee's brilliant insurgency and declare him "dead" as a force in the GOP forevermore.
If the reports are true, Romney's "Valentine's Day Massacre" of democracy ought to prove a number of things to GOP conservatives.
Hopefully, all of the conservatives who drank the "talk radio Kool-aide" by supporting Romney as the "great conservative hope" will now see that their "anti-McCain" savior is nothing more than a political opportunist.
Romney, as it turns out, was nothing more than a decoy to stop Mike Huckabee and propel John McCain to the nomination.
Romney is about to commit the "ultimate" flip-flop: from flame-throwing McCain critic to sycophantic McCain lap-dog.

Romney's backing McCain for the same reasons that I'll vote for McCain: 1)National Defense 2) Supreme Court judges. How many decisions by the court have been 5/4? Conservatives have been fighting for decades to swing the balance in the courts and it's probable that the next president will nominate several judges. Those are important enough issues to justify a vote for McCain, even though there are many areas I disagree with.

Romney's next speech...........
Yes, I was against amnesty before I was for it so I have many illegals cutting my grass now.

Will this put McCain at 1191 delegates??
Anyone know?

unitethegop, this is one step to the VP spot for Romney
Posted by: plainsm | Feb 14, 2008 3:56:51 PM
As a Romney supporter, and an AZ native that hates McCain for his illegal immigration issues, this is a tough choice. I'm probably still going to write in Mitt's name rather than vote for McCain...
I still blame Huckabee for Romney's failure in the campaign, but that's politics.
I don't want Romney to be the VP candidate - I'd rather that he ran in 2012 with a clean slate. In the end I hope he's just doing this to increase the tiny chances of a GOP president in '08 and unify the party.
He does look a little like a liberal supporter, thus increasing his "flip flopper" reputation. However, I see his long-term vision: Anybody but a Dem in the White House.

I hate to say this as a Republican my self I think McCain will not win by a land side. McCain has flip/flop about alot of Issues. He is supporting Ilegal immigration. He was for cutting taxes now he sasays he wants to make Bush tax cut permanant. In regards to license for Ilegals it really dont matter thy wont show up to get them. I think it will be a good way to make an idenification in case they hit an American citizen they can go after the them. An Ilegal immigrant is too scared to come and and declare publicly that they are Ilegal.
so thats a lie. Hillary is under invetigation for providing Ilegals in California absentee ballots, back in September. Now thats a crime..Tells you why she let go her Latino campaing manager she does not want the heat. I hope she does not try to do the same in Texas by providing Ilegas immigrants absentee ballots. Hillary thinks that because shes a Clinton shes above the rest. Shame on you Hillary.
