Wash. Gov. Gregoire Endorses Obama

February 08, 2008 9:43 AM

ABC News' Jake Tapper Reports: Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire will endorse Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, today, the day before the Washington Caucuses.

Gregoire's endorsement was hotly pursued by both Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY. She is a "super delegate," which means she is free to select any candidate she wishes to support. Super delegates make up one-fifth of the 4049 total delegates on the Democratic side.

Clinton has the backing of both US Senators from the state, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell.

Hey, nice endorsement for Obama. Usually the day before is a little late to matter (certainly not enough time to take advantage of her contacts, distribution lists, etc), but having the governor is better than losing the governor.

Gregoire is another person I have heard mentioned as a future presidential candidate because of her toughness, good judgement and courage. Her endorsement of Obama shows me why she is mentioned. She was able to support the best candidate with the right ideas and integrity, plus stand up to the Clinton machine. Bravo Christine!

I wish thee where more Kennedy's to endorse Obama. We all know how much that helped.

The Kennedys actually made a difference. Obama was a lot closer in MA than he would otherwise have been. Look at the polling and you can see him closing the gap rapidly. Nobody expected him to win MA, although it would have been nice.

Who cares about endorsements any more? They do not help! Oprah and the Kenndys and the kerrys did not stop Obama from losing to Clinton in double digits in California and Massachussetts.

Strangely, Obama is celebarting these frenzy endorsements, but refusing to participate in debates as Clinton is requesting. He does not want to discuss substance because he has very little of it.

Why should Obama debate with Clinton? It just gives Clinton free air time and publicity that she can't afford otherwise.

Hillary Clinton needs to pay her own way, and not rely on Senator Obama for media coverage. Americans want to hear more from Obama, we already know what Clinton thinks.

Clinton is "requesting" to become the nominee, too. Should Obama give just give her that, as well? Why should she dictate when and where they debate?

He is participating in two debates. More than enough to show who is the better candidate.

Actually, Obama has agreed to debate, so that argument is no longer valid.

And to say that Senator Obama is of little substance, I beg to differ. Instead of leaving such ill-informed comments on blogs, I invite you to visit the Senator's website to look at the legislation he has introduced and help pass, as well as the "blueprint" for his presidency. It's all there... plenty of substance. One only need to take the time to read it.

After 4 years of Gov. Gregoire, the words "toughness" and "courage" honestly aren't at the tip of my tongue (more like "centrism" and "incrementalism") but I certainly didn't expect this endorsement from her, and I applaud it.

Still, the cynic in me wonders if this isn't a way to be the sole exception among the Washington pols who gets to cash in if Obama wins (Murray, Cantwell, Baird, Sims, etc endorsing Clinton.)

Come on John, if you have half a brain you know HRC is offering up these debates for free publicity b/c her campaign is in dire need of cash. Also, the word is much of the money she raised yesterday came from the GOP as they know she's the only one who can unite the Rep to get out and vote for McCain.

Obama agreed to have two debates, which is more than enough. You never really learn much from these debates at all. If you think about it, what the hell does a debate demonstrate? The ability to dodge questions, etc.

I want to know where the $5M she "loaned" to her campaign came from and why she isn't willing to make her financial records public like Obama does. With the recent NYT article about Bill getting $131M for his "foundation" in exchange for helping his buddy get that mining deal.

bob10001, Chris and other like minded...

You know that it makes a big difference and that's while Billary has been pursuing the governor's endorsement, that's while they attempted to stop Kennedy's.
Of course the fact that Barack nearly closed the gap in the national poll (by the way, it's now a tie!!) is testimony both to his superiority and what endorsements mean. He is called a new comer. But Billary has decades of exposure yet the campaign is struggling, not only to contain Barack's surge but also to stay afloat financially!
You want to push such a looser down anyone's throat?
Give me a break!

Great endorsement!!

The rank and file are beginning to see the "writing on the wall." Either they get on board now, or they're left behind FOREVER...

I don't understand why Obama is said to be only words with no substance. I listened to the last debate and his plans seem to have the same details as Clinton. What has Clinton outlined in detail that Obama has not? I would really like to know. He health care plan is detailed, his plan to change government by making it more transparant seems to be detail...Where is the lack of detail...What do we need to know that we don't know already.

Posted by: Marie | Feb 8, 2008 11:51:02 AM

Marie - my guess is they won't give you any details about his lacking details.

Hey people. Do your own research and don't just read headlines! The Kennedy endorsements were useful in closing the gap in Cali and Mass, increasing support among the Democratic base, and getting media attention. Obama was never expected to win either state. Check the statistics during the four weeks running up to Super Tuesday and you will find it's true!

Do super delegates vote DURING their State's primary? If so, that means they get TWO VOTES? One in their primary and one at the convention?

Posted by: coonsey | Feb 8, 2008 12:33:12 PM

They attempt to claim Obama lacks subtance and details, because what makes the two minute TV segment is the poetry and inspiration of his speeches. If you listen to the entire speech, not just the parts CNN/FOX/MSNBC runs, you'll find there both substance and vision!

I think Hillary's lack of ability to manage her campaigns FUNDS, should make American's worried about the way she'll also handle OUR money if President.

Obama’s not only been successful in drawing out our younger generation to ‘get involved’, he’s been able to draw out some older folks that have been lagging in their citizenship duties as well.

The Senator started his candidacy as a relatively unknown individual. Since that time he’s been able to take on a well established (35 years according to Hillary Clinton’s claims) woman candidate that was considered to be the Democratic nominatee way back in 2000 according to some. Obama's not only got a real chance of winning the nomination, some say he definitely will.

Gregoire is my governor and I'm glad she endorsed Obama. He looks forward; Hillary looks past. She's running to "get even" with the right-wing conspiracy. Frankly, I'm tired of it.
Why arguing about policy -- both health care plans will undergo numerous changes before becoming law. Who has the best ability to bring opposing sides together? Obama -- Hillary's refusal to negotiate is why we don't have universal health care now.

The cable news boys and girls love to play up Hillary's endorsements (Maxine Waters, Black Reverends....etc.) but it's funny how they don't talk about how meaningless those endorsements were. This is a great endorsement for Obama. Great Job. Hey ! Did you hear that Rush Limbaugh is starting a fund raising campaign for Hillary called 'Keep Her In-So We Can Win !'.....I'm serious !
