Youngest DNC Superdelegate Backing Obama

Share

February 21, 2008 10:44 AM

ABC News' Karen Travers Reports:  Marquette University junior Jason Rae had a personal breakfast with Chelsea Clinton and was wooed on the phone by Bill Clinton and Madeline Albright.

But after seeing the enthusiasm for Barack Obama in Wisconsin on Tuesday, Rae tells ABC News he is supporting the Illinois senator in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

At 21, Rae is the youngest DNC superdelegate, one of the 795 free agents who can back any candidate in the race for the Democratic nomination. He has never even voted in a presidential election because he turned 18 after Election Day in 2004.

"As I think about my role as a young DNC member and a young superdelegate, my generation clearly spoke on Tuesday saying Obama was their choice," Rae told ABC News. "I was inspired by him as well. He has inspired a new generation of voters to get active and energized in the political process."

Rae said the line at the polling place on campus at Marquette had a "constant line" from 9am until the polls closed. "I saw more students participating in the process for the first time that I could ever have imagined," he said.

In recent weeks, Rae has become a power broker of sorts, as both campaigns pushed hard to lock down the support of superdelegates. Rae met up with the former first daughter a week before the Wisconsin primary for breakfast at the student union at the University of Milwaukee and had a lengthy conversation on his cell phone with former President Clinton.

Rae was elected as a DNC member at the Wisconsin state party convention in June 2004. He was only 17 years old but there are no party rules that say a DNC member has to be of voting age. Rae ran against and defeated the president of the state firefighters’ union and a state legislator.

While the attention and flurry of activity around the Wisconsin primary was exciting, Rae is eager to get back to his routine as a college student.

"I got a little behind in my school work of late, which is okay, but I think things are going to calm down now," Rae said.

Question? All five of my children are for Obama. All five have cell phones and no landline.

Are the new young voters (mainly for Obama) being polled?

""I got a little behind in my school work of late, which is okay, but I think things are going to calm down now," Rae said."

That's OK. You believe the "big picture" taught by your betters in the University. You vote blindly for Democrats. That's all they want from you, so you'll get an 'A' anyway.

Don't sweat it.

Posted by: Good Lt | Feb 21, 2008 11:02:36 AM

Seriously? You guys are ripping on this guy for his opinion, his right to represent his vote and that he's getting behind in his school work because he believes in a cause unlike half the college students out there who are behind in schoolwork because they're hung over from too much frathouse partying?
Jason, ignore these people. Negative attitudes like this is exactly what got the country to where it is right now. Good for you for taking a stand so early in your life. I wish you continued success!!

Posted by: GirlWIndy | Feb 21, 2008 11:21:40 AM

JB - No most polls do not factor in cell phones, and that has been a factor when the youth vote is widely split. Most primary polls also do not factor in independents. That is why you can see the polls often being way off (more than their stated margin of error) this political season. It's getting harder and harder to determine "random" samples of a possible electorate, so pre-election polls are really more a measure of general sentiment than a reliable barometer.

Posted by: Kevin | Feb 21, 2008 11:23:27 AM

Good judgment Jason, you are brave. You have acted the way your generation are doing. Its your future and the elders must help, if at all they are not greedy and love young generation.

Posted by: Peace | Feb 21, 2008 11:23:32 AM

Careful what you ask for??? In Massachusetts, Deval Patrick ran an identical campaign for Governor and won. After 1 year in office, the shine of the campaign has not lasted. His performance has been sub par at best. People, we are about to elect the POTUS!

McCain on the "Hot Seat", I wonder how it fills.

McCain's best days are behind him.

Obama wins Texas and Ohio

Posted by: Lookup | Feb 21, 2008 11:28:32 AM

The Obama converts another with his uplifting rap of hope and change and future. Hey Jason, can you state anything that Obama stands for and will do as president? If you said bigger government control, higer taxes on the middle class and socialism, you are right. Er Left. Your new emperor wears no clothes. But like a good leftie, you don't care.
Then again, Chelsea really cheaped out on you for breakfast. You should have taken her to Dream Dance.

Posted by: Spectreman | Feb 21, 2008 11:30:46 AM

JB, excellent observation. The polling methodology is obsolete and/or the methodology is biased. That is why polls indicated that Hillary was only 5 points behind Barrack in Wisconsin. Look what the results were. Texas is a near tie, according to the polls. In almost all the Dem primaries the polls have been wrong by anywhere from 10 to 20 points.

Posted by: BooMan | Feb 21, 2008 11:32:13 AM

This is a young kid who understand that our country needs a leader not hypocrite. Good choice Rae!!!
I hope the other super delegates will learn that lesson we the people have made our choice. If they wants us to turn out big in November they better respect our decisions and choices.

Posted by: change | Feb 21, 2008 11:32:18 AM

when did years of experience become so negative. This is fantasyland!

Posted by: billy | Feb 21, 2008 11:34:32 AM

For a six pack and a fun party most young voters will change their vote or not vote at all. Obama is a flash in the pan and a love affair from the Press. He is only a good speech giver with no substance.

Posted by: Superman | Feb 21, 2008 11:41:44 AM

i gotta give this kid credit for not being swindled. i mean breakfast with a first daughter? calls from madeleine albright? that's pretty flattering. and he still has made up his own mind anyway. good for him.

Posted by: emmarose | Feb 21, 2008 11:43:14 AM

"But after seeing the enthusiasm for Barack Obama in Wisconsin on Tuesday, Rae tells ABC News he is supporting the Illinois senator in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination."

So basically this superdelegate is not making an informed opinion, he's just jumping on the bandwagon. We should have all of the primaries on the same day so people can vote from the heart instead of being biased by the preceeding results.

Posted by: angela | Feb 21, 2008 11:46:05 AM

"He is only a good speech giver with no substance."

Yeah, well, it worked for Reagan.

Posted by: Sam | Feb 21, 2008 11:48:18 AM

Right on, Angela! "But after seeing the enthusiasm for Barack Obama in Wisconsin on Tuesday..." LOL That's the main reason why so many young people are voting for Barry. They just wanna look "cool". They wanna be part of the "in" crowd. Barry = The Rock Star..

You know, hearing all the Obama detractors out there rant and rave about how we have stars (or worse, spirals) in our eyes for Obama makes me sick.

I'm sorry you don't, or CAN'T, believe in YOUR candidate the way we do. This is our time to get involved and try to make things better. Why do people have to trample on that? Attack the issues, not the supporters who are taking part in the process in record numbers.....even if it is intimidating

Posted by: jenny | Feb 21, 2008 11:53:06 AM

I AM SICK AND TIRED OF HILARY SUPPORTERS SAYING THAT OBAMA IS ALL TALK AND NO ACTION. AND THAT SHE HAS MORE EXPIERIENCE THAN HE DOES. WHO HAS BEEN A SENATOR LONGER? AND I DONT SEE HOW YOU CAN COUNT TIME SERVED AS A FIRST LADY AS EXPIERIENCE...WHAT DID SHE ACCOMPLISH AS FIRST LADY...2,000 PIECES OF LEGISLATIVE ACTION TO HER 20...AND YA'LL DO NOT SEE A PROBLEM WITH THAT....IF YOU WANT A BUILDING NAMED AFTER YOU VOTE FOR HILARY IF YOU WANT A SAFER AND MORE PRODUCTIVE NATION VOTE FOR OBAMA...AND ANOTHER THING..I AM SICK AND TIRED OF HEARING "WHERE IS HE GOING TO GET THE MONEY TO PAY FOR ALL THE THINGS HE IS PROMISING...US OF COURSE" NO @#$% !!!...AND WHERE DO YOU THINK HILARY WOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE MONEY TO DO THE THINGS THAT SHE SAID SHE WILL DO...YOU AND ME IDIOTS ..IT JUST DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT YOUR MONEY USED FOR...WAKE UP AND SEE HER FOR WHAT SHE REALLY IS...A WEAK HUMAN BEING THAT DOES NOT REPRRESENT AN AMERICAN WOMAN IN MY EYES

Hillary is ONE of the strongest American women, you nut. She's a fighter and a scrapper.

Hey Joe,

Obama is a Senator not a Congressman. All you other Democratic bashers remember this the middle-class pays MORE per dollar than the rich. It's high time the rich pay their share instead of running from their patriotic duty to fund roads, police stations, fire departments, etc. Could it possibly be that some of you right-wing whores are these very same wealthy shirking your patriotism while making money off of the Iraq War..........................

Posted by: Frank | Feb 21, 2008 12:04:01 PM

FIGHTER AND A SCRAPPER??? ARE YOU SERIOUS? YOU CAN HONESTLY RESPECT A WOMAN THAT WILL ALLOW HER HUSBAND TO CHEAT ON HER RATHER THAN STAND UP FOR HERSELF

Posted by: chris | Feb 21, 2008 12:07:07 PM

This superdelegate mess blows. Are the Party leaders so worried that the people will not vote the way they want them to that they have to set up 795 superdelegates so the outcome of the primary can be controlled. And what quals does this youngman have that makes him a superdelegate?

Posted by: 1olegrzbar | Feb 21, 2008 12:07:13 PM

JB, Kevin - they claim to factor in cell phone users, but I can't figure out how.

I was making that cell phone argument all last year, without knowing what percentage of voters actually didn't have landlines. Then in late fall, the Washington Post reported it was something like 18 percent of households that didn't have landlines.

So it is a significant chunk of people. I only have a cell and don't miss the landline at all.

"I was inspired by him as well. He has inspired a new generation of voters to get active and energized in the political process."

I think that he believed that by casting his vote for Obama, believing in him as well, but looking at it from the perspective of how motivated everyone was in Wisconsin, that that was the right choice. Super delegates matter... so he was doing probably what he felt was right, not only for his opinion, but for the opinion of his state.

SHE WAS ALL FOR THE IRAQ WAR TILL IT WASN'T THE POPULAR POSISTION ANYMORE...REAL FIGHTER DMK

Posted by: chris | Feb 21, 2008 12:08:48 PM

Why does a 21-year-old college student have a vote that is the equivalent to some hundreds (if not thousands) of "regular" voters? I can understand the super delegate's vote in the hands of elected officials. They have earned the legitimacy of such power, as they have been elected by the general public on at least one occasion. But this is only half the super delegates from what I have seen. The other 400+ could literally steal the election for either Obama or Clinton. They should not have such political power. Should the fate of a nation rest on this 21-year-old, and a handful of others?

Posted by: JRS | Feb 21, 2008 12:10:24 PM

DMK - name a notable accomplishment for any presidential candidate, either party, past or present. Come on - no googling. Just whatever off the top of your head.

Tell me one thing that Hillary took a fight for you.
It is so amazing the other night Hillary said that UNION will have a place on her table. Is that the same Hillaary when she was working for Wal-Mart did her best to stop Wal-Mart employees from unionizes.
Hillary can run but she can't hide she has so much baggage. Can someone tell me which president signed NAFTA?
Wait I guess i know who Bill Clinton. she really has 35 yrs of doing nothing for us the people.

You know, back in 1992, the Clintons weren't complaining when Bill was on MTV and won the young vote based on MTV and playing a saxophone with rock bands.

As for experience--this is now thread 429,100 where Obama's experience is criticized on behalf of Hillary Clinton's, yet no one has stepped forward with what exactly Clinton has done other than be married to a governor and president as well her 1+ terms as NY senator (where she has sponsored limited significant legislation)

* *
Instead of looking at websites set up by pundits and shills, interested people should check out places such as Congressional Quarterly to find out more exact information.

And for those people using names like Obamassiah or McPain...that doesn't do anything to convince others of your position. It is that level of hate and vitriol that have (thank God) given McCain and Obama their opportunity. Finally we can return to government based on consensus rather than partisan bickering.

I really don't know the age group here but I hope it is young folks. Historically the young voter has the worst voting record of any group for the last 4 decades. But that group is the most vocal when whining and bitching about things

Young people have the power in numbers to change things in the US but I think like in the past, they will avoid the voting polls finding drinking beer and toga parties to be more important.
I don't give a damn who you vote for - just showup and vote.If you don't vote you don't have the right to bitch.

Posted by: Deep-Thought | Feb 21, 2008 12:38:15 PM

Obama worked with Feingold to eliminate gifts of travel on corporate jets by lobbiests and members of Congress. It was signed into law in Sept. 2007.
He sponsored bills with Charles Shumer to criminalize deceptive practices in Federal elections including fraudulant flyers.
Obama also co-sponsored the Secure America & Orderly Immigration Act. 2005.

Shame on you people just like the personality or attribute- nothing else and no accomplishments. The young vote to ruin this country- Most of them get addicted so many other things too shouldn’t have voting privilege

------Its pathetic some of these people show up for vote with out knowing anything or hearing to some media and talk show hosts know how it works in media.

Posted by: david | Feb 21, 2008 12:39:16 PM

David, that's bullcrap.

The young ruin the country? How many people under 40 authorized Iraq, the doubling of the national debt, helped increase unemployment, have put social security into a hole?

Methinks that you should look at the 'Me Generation' for putting America on a declining course, not young people.

Posted by: jim | Feb 21, 2008 12:41:50 PM

It cannot be overemphasized that the electability of a
particular candidate must take into account future
events like debates and cannot rely solely on recent
polls to predict a likely outcome.

The only argument that senator obama would do better
against john mccain than Senator Hillary Clinton would
is a 4-5 % difference in polls. Such an argument does
not take into account the fact that the eventual
nominees will debate at least a few times, where the
American voter will have a great chance to clearly
compare the candidates, and the significant impact
such debates and any additional factors would have on
this important decision facing the American people.

If there is one thing that this campaign season has
shown, it is that polls are not reliable predictors.
Polls predicted that Senator Clinton would be the
nominee by Super Tuesday, that she would lose New
Hampshire and that John McCain would be left out
again.

What makes them any more reliable now than they were
then?

Posted by: chris | Feb 21, 2008 12:42:54 PM

I would go on, but, they only let you have so many letters here. By the way the Secure America Act was co-sponsored with McCain. But, I think you got the point.

Posted by: Mollie | Feb 21, 2008 12:43:26 PM

hey David,
You wanna know why we are voting. We realize by raising our voice at every election every time we have the chance. We will fight for America a better. We will go to war for a reason. we will no go to war to put money in your pocket.

Posted by: Change | Feb 21, 2008 12:48:36 PM

Delegates, super-delegates, electoral college... it's all a farce to dilute your vote and my vote; to place the "power" in the hands of a few, elite, controlling party-empowered individuals, both Democrat and Republican. One person, one vote... tally them up in the primary and the winner takes the party. One person, one vote... tally the votes in the general election and the winner takes all.

Posted by: guest | Feb 21, 2008 12:50:20 PM

It's funny to watch Americans scream out loud about democracy being so important and then watch them squirm when the status quo crumbles. Hey, I loved Hillary. Put up with her when the Clintons moved to New York so she could be a senator. Put up with all her stumbles as she voted for the war, then backtracked so many times. Put up with her husband for, well, being Bill. Why? Because I believed in her like I believed in Bill. Believed in the charm and the promises. But for the past few months Hillary has been acting like the throne is hers, not because she thinks the people really want her there but because she thinks it is rightfully hers. Now she's acting like a power hungry petulant princess. See, in a real democracy you can cry like a baby, you can play dirty, you can pull out all the stops and have your family battle for you and practically beg people to vote for you, but if that's not what the people want then you are out. Obama is getting people out to vote in record numbers and they are voting for him. For so long Americans, including the Clintons, have trumpeted democracy as the most important thing there is. Thank you for reminding us about it's importance Hillary. And Bill. And Chelsea. I'm going to take my one vote and give it to Obama when really I wanted to give it to you. Why? Because I don't believe in you anymore. I believe in him. And I like him better. And I believe he has a better chance of helping this country recover from the Bush disease. Thank you for your service Bill and Hillary. You have done a lot of great works around the world and here at home. But in this campaign you and B.O. have reminded me how important my one vote is. Turns out democracy might actually work after all. All I ask is that you leave this campaign with your head high and not like Rudy. You are better than that.

American's are dissatisfied with the way partisan, bitter, dynastic polictics and policies. They are leaving the under 50 crowd feeling disenfranchised about a future of high taxes to pay for the boomer social security, high energy and food costs and a future not as prosperous as their parents.

The under 50 crowd will have to suffer and pay the bills of the boomers. Clinton offers a more dismal view of the future with micro adjustments of policy coming from Mama Clinton. Their rule is Mama knows best!

The solutions to the problems presented are not more of the same, but from the very citizens being governed. Clinton is not offering a vision of greatness and hope for the future. Just take some more of the same medicine and you will feel better. Its time to breakdown the wall of partisanship and dirty politics!

Most of all we need a visionary leader to inspire us to aspire to more! This time its more than the economy, stupid!

Hillary-Obama
Whats the difference? It just proves Left-Wing radical socialism can take the form of any gender or race.

Hillary Clinton will never leave politics. One thing she has accomplished is being the first woman to go this far in a Prez election.

Don't EVER dream the Clinton's are down for the count. I've seen them get back up swinging so many times. I worked with them when Bill was our Governor.
The Pubs thought they had him so many times. He slipped through that impeachment charade. With almost no scarring or damage to his person.

one thing is for sure Bill and Hill ain't never going away from public life.

I would bet that Chelsea (A fine young southern woman) will be running for President when she turns 35.

So shut up about it. They will NEVER go away.

I will vote for hillary in November. Every November she run's for office. Then I will vote for Chelsea.
And my children will vote for her children.

THE CLINTON'S WILL NEVER GO AWAY...

My vote goes to McCain too... There's no way I am gonna vote for that "wet behind the years" man named Barry Hussein Obama.

Edited Verion: Has anyone read the book by LtCol Robert Patterson, USAF Retired and titled "Dereliction of Duty?" Suggested quick glimse would be Chapter 3, page 59. Read it and then tell us you still want to vote for Clinton.

dear lookup-

thanks for your friendly spirit in these exchanges. I'm particularly stricken with the White's House comment.

it is very thought provoking

It cuts to the bone.

obama makes me nauseaus its either clinton or mccain

To get back to the topic we are supposed to be discussing, Chelsea doesn't seem to have helped her Mom at all. She couldn't persuade someone this close to her own age, she went off to Hawaii, and that resulted in her mother losing 74% to 24%.

Obama is not the cure he is part of the disease. He is part of the entitled generation. Remember, regardless of whether it is school, healthcare, money or jobs ... you owe me. None of the candidates are perfect but the "give me" generation did not, have not, and will not work so you can have a better life. Because everyone owes them and that is all there is to it so don't fool yourself. Only those who expect to get more vote foolishly those that work for what they have are not so free with their votes.

Also I’m tired of the Independents trying to run away with the democratic candidate position and threaten a revolt if the superdeligates don’t vote their way. Get your own party then you can make the rules.

JAJAJA--- . Texas has corners with more population, I mean after all Texas is her last stand. I would have voted for her because she is in touch with reality and the challenges that America faces unlike those republican old farts that would like to practice the same politics of the 60’s. BUT! I will vote for Obama for the simple fact that politics in Washington are not going to change unless the people are more involved. He brings people together and when that happens people start asking questions. Jason, My hats goes off to you, because when I saw the news that you were out on a breakfast with the former first daughter I said -"Disgusting! Politics as usual" You proved me wrong and I am glad you did I saw that as some type of lobbying.
