Behind the Scenes at Clinton's 'SNL' Debut
March 02, 2008 10:35 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper and Rick Klein report: It was one of Hillary Clinton’s most secretive missions of the campaign.
Suddenly, just days before perhaps the most anticipated round of voting, she disappeared from her plane, leaving aides to tell an angry and skeptical mob of reporters that Sen. Clinton, D-N.Y., went to "do something," assuring them that it was "nothing bad." Aides sat in the front of the plane, ignoring the people behind them for the two-hour flight from Texas to Ohio, Saturday afternoon.
What reporters didn’t know was that Clinton’s "Saturday Night Live" appearance had been planned since the middle of last week.
As first reported by ABC’s Kate Snow, it was just last fall when Clinton turned down "SNL’s" invitation to be on their program. It was also around the time when the show ran an unflattering Halloween skit, making fun of Clinton, which included a cameo by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.
Top Clinton advisors spoke to "SNL" late Friday night and the whole script had been worked out by Saturday morning.
"SNL" came up with the "editorial response" idea, but Clinton advisors, including Jonathan Lovett and Philippe Reines, who also assisted Al Gore with his "SNL" appearance, suggested some interaction with "SNL" actress Amy Poehler. All was finalized by 3 p.m. Saturday, just as Clinton wrapped her last Texas campaign stop of the day.
Clinton arrived at the studios around 9:15 p.m., missing the full dress rehearsal that had started at 8 p.m., but she was allowed to run through her lines after 10 p.m., once the audience left.
Clinton and Poehler went through the lines several times, changing the wording a few times. When it got to the laughing scene when Poehler imitates Clinton’s laugh, the set erupted with laughter.
Clinton watched the debate skit from the sidelines for the first time, concealing her identity from the audience. Ten seconds before the end of the skit, Clinton was led to her chair ... and the lights came on with Clinton "Live from New York!"
After the skit, team Clinton was beyond pleased with their boss' work, even hugging "SNL" cast members. Show writers apparently held up cue cards that had 10.0 on them that they flashed Clinton as they walked by. Clinton lingered, taking pictures with staff and crew, as they applauded her work.
Clinton left the set at midnight and headed back to Ohio –- missing the after-parties -– but was sure to send her "emissaries."

Clinton's performance was lame and the whole incident smacks of desperation. How sad.

Yes, an audience filled with laughter and the ability to poke fun at oneself just reeks of desperation. So very sad, indeed.

Hillary is so fake. Fortunately, this is close to an end.

Loved the SNL skit.
Too bad it is so close to the truth.
Obama has never had his feet held to the fire. Everyone tip-toes around this newly proclaimed "Saint"
I only hope the people in the great state of Texas will pull out the smelling salts and wake everyone up.

Joe & Shevone,
Those were both excellent insights. One of the things I have picked up about Obama is the fact that this really is all about him. He is the golden boy who has always gotten what he wants and on the rare occasion when things don't go his way he can't handle it. When he ran for congress and lost he was so dejected he almost got out of politics. We don't need this kind of leadership. We need someone who will fight and never give up, not someone who will stick their tail between their legs and sulk off when they lose.

Firefighter - as each day passes more information comes to light that shows he is not authentic. He is a very shrwed politican though. With his speaking and fundraising capabilities he missed his calling as a televangelist. LOL

She's got enough guts to be able to laugh at herself and to let what other people say about her roll off. If you can stand up to the kind of personal attacks she's endured over the years, you gotta be tough. The last few political skits featured on SNL over the past two weekends have been funny and right on. If the press had any backbone they'd be able to take a little criticism too. Instead they turn into a bunch of defensive ninnies. CNN even did a feature on media coverage of the campaign, saying, "oh sure, blame the press". Pathetic.

I don't understand what the big deal is here. It's comedy show. They had Obama on first making fun of Hillary. It's no endorsement. Even Senator Clinton said so. It's just writers putting together funny skits created to make us laugh? What's the big story here? Did I miss something?

Both resumes are impressive but Clinton obviously has more experience.
I wont post the voting records but 90% are identical as are the plans they propose. Where they differ is on bills that benefit oil and nuclear industry - Obama supported Cheney's bill.
I wont post the interest group ratings but the list for Obama is less because he has less time/experience. They are very close although Obama gets points from pro-life organizations and places like sleep disorder organizations.
Ignoring the MSM and both the campaigns it looks like a no-brainer to me!

FINALLY something she CAN do; a skit written by leftist flunkies who pander to, well leftist flunkies.

The SNL cameo began the programmed countdown to Hillary's concession speech on wednesday. Threats of legal challenges, Florida, Michigan, Ohio voting machines, etc are negotiating ploys within the democratic party to exchange guarantees in return for going quietly.
The party, the press, McCain and the Clinton's already know it's over. This is posturing time.
Appearing on SNL after losing would be awkward. Appearing before her concession is positioned as being a good sport.
By the way, no one reads long posts like the ones above. Think about it... you didn't read them either, did you?

Actually I did read the long posts. some of us do still read. Very interesting to hear from a DC insider. I thought Hillary was very amusing and self-effacing on SNL - she has great comic timing and the chemistry between her and Amy Poehler was infectious. On the other hand, when Obama is asked the most simple question off script, his responses are leaden and mostly consist of long "uh" pauses. He doesn't seem to have a sense of humor, unless one considers cynicism and sarcasem humorous.

Illinos, was happy when he left, They finally were able to stop, Live birth abortions. Which Obama beleived in.
(live birth abortion, inducing labor baby is born live, then left to die.)
Inhumane and he was in favor of it.
You can be on 1000 committee's if you do not show up, or are there and do not do your job, and not vote or vote present (shrugging your responsibility, to the people) you can not call that experience.
He has voted on issues and bills that follow his church doctrine.

John Belushi would never have gone in the tank with Hillary's advisors to do a script. What a load of crap. And what a bunch of desperate Clinton backers to post whole dictionaries on a short story about a TV appearance.
Reminds me of Bush's thanksgiving with the troops.

I have also have been reading the London Times and have wonder why MSM is not reporting on this . Carl Rove must know about this It makes me wonder what is going on with the party I have supported fo thiry five years. Is this what the progressives are backing ?

Do you know what really sucks??? I was at the dress rehearsal!!!!! I tried to convince my friend to accept the tickets to the live show but he wanted to sleep. Sucks I missed her apperence but none the less it was a pretty good show.

Hillary is so balanced! She is the smartest candidate running, is the most knowledgeable and prepared on the issues, has great relevant experience, and she can laugh about herself with the American public. A delightful skit, SNL!

Question: Why is it that women are either very supportive of each other or so cruel and vicious? Wait up ladies! You don't have to support Hillary Clinton, but attack the issues, not the gender. This only give fuel to people of the "jerry springer" mentality that love a good "cat" fight and say, "that's why women being in charge is bad". Men may have placed the "glass ceiling" up there, but we don't have to apply for the job of upkeep on that thing?!! I've got news for you: it's the women voters will decide if we have the first female candidate and/or president.

I think we're being short-sighted here,America. I happen to think Hillary is much better prepared to get a Democratic Agenda implemented, but I also understand America's enthrallment with Obama's charm and inspiring speeches. My question is, what's going to happen to Barack when the Republicans level their sights on our candidate? They will be merciless, as we've seen for years in the way they've relentlessly crucified the Clinton's at the country's expense. And still, Hillary has persevered and continued to be effective and productive (as has Bill, by the way).
From a strategic standpoint, I say our best bet is to put them both on the same ticket, a sure win against McCain and whoever. Let Hillary and Bill and Barack and Michelle, get this ship turned around and in 2016, Barack will be seasoned, vetted and a shoe-in to give us 8 more years of progress. (It's called succession planning.) If the Dems don't quit all this selfish in-fighting, we're going to find ourselves facing 8 more years of outrageous spending that will gut the savings of every middle-class family in America. I don't know how you make this happen DNC, but I'm going to be pretty disappointed if we finally produce two top flight candidates like these and still lose to McCain in November.

I totally agree with you Ms. Jaime. The underlying faction of the GOP has been slowly feeding the Clinton-Obama fight. Has anyone stopped to figure why "can't touch this" Karl Rove stepped away from the Bush Administration last year? It's called long-term strategic planning! The Republican machine hasn't even gotten started yet.
