Bill Richardson endorses Barack Obama
March 21, 2008 1:48 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson made his endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for president official during a rally in Portland, Oregon Friday.
Appearing side-by-side with Obama, it took Richardson only thirteen words into his speech to mention Obama’s speech on race in Philadelphia this week, one he dubbed “historic.”
“Senator Obama could have given a safer speech. He is, after all, well ahead in the delegate count for our party’s nomination. He could have just waited for the controversy over the deplorable remarks of Reverend Wright to subside, as it surely would have. Instead, Senator Obama showed us once again what kind of leader he is. He spoke to us as adults,” Richardson said.
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
As the nation’s only Hispanic governor, Richardson said he was moved by the speech knowing the struggle of Hispanics in America, “As a Hispanic, I was particularly touched by his words. I have been troubled by the demonization of immigrants, specifically Hispanics, by too many in this country.”
Richardson also cited Obama’s opposition to the Iraq war in 2002, and his intended plan for withdrawal as the foreign policy leadership that he believes America needs.
The governor, who worked in the Clinton administration and has long ties to both Clintons, explained his decision: “My great affection and admiration for Hillary Clinton and President Bill Clinton will never waver,” but added that Obama is part of the new generation of leadership that can bring the country together, “It is time, however, for Democrats to stop fighting amongst ourselves and to prepare for the tough fight we will face against John McCain in the Fall.”
Calling Obama a friend, Richardson told the story of when, as a presidential candidate on stage with Obama during a democratic debate, he was not paying attention to a question that was asked of him by the moderator. Obama, sitting next to him, an opponent at the time, whispered “Katrina, Katrina” to him, Richardson recalled.
“He could have thrown me under the bus,” Richardson laughed, but said his then-rival backed him up.
Obama accepted Richardson’s endorsement, saying that he couldn’t be more honored to have “the support of one of the great public servants to the United States.”

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Bill Richardson endorses Barack Obama :
As a hispanic the least I can say is that I, along with most of hispanics here in the US, betrayed by Bill Richardson. He's the same one that suggested not long ago, that he would embrace the voter's decision of whom they would favor for the presidential nomination. Clearly, his decision was not in benefit of the hundreds of thousands of latinos that supported Hillary Clinton in the voting booth. His endorsement is clearly a personal move and has nothing to do with the voters will and preference.
Richardson's endorsement DOES NOT represent the will of the majority of hispanics in the United States. The majority of the hispanic community clearly believes in Hillary Clinton's leadership and should repudiate Richardson's endorsement to Barack Obama. Neither Barack Obama nor Bill Richardson represent the will of hispanics here in the US.

This world needs Obama..He is a true leader ("once in a life time"). I am willing to give this guy a chance! Go Obama!

Richardson is a loser and his endorsement won't change the fate of the sinking Obama ship. Obama cant have it both ways, he cant denounce his racist pastor and still support him. Americans are not swollowing that one and many call for resignation
Posted by: eds | Mar 21, 2008 1:59:57 PM
We should all come together as democrats and support this historic candidate. Bill Richardson has once again demonstrated a sound judgement and hope that other super delegates will follow. OBAMA ALL THE WAY
Posted by: Prince | Mar 21, 2008 2:00:44 PM
This endorsement just want to change the topic of Wright affect and fooled the American people, especially younger people.
Posted by: john | Mar 21, 2008 2:02:33 PM
So Obama is supposed to be the new generation of Democrats who will bring this country together according to Richardson.
With the civil war that is going on right now between Obama and Hillary, it doesn't seem like the "new generation" of Democrats can even bring the DEMOCRATS together, much less the country.
... and if Obama shows his unwavering support of a man who says "God Damn America", it doesn't look like Obama is going to unite anybody in the future either.

Wow. Crushing blow for Hillary. As a former supporter of Hillary, I have to agree with Richardson in that it's time for Democrats to stop fussing and support Obama. Hillary really should have dropped out a month ago so hopefully she will do so now.
Posted by: Latisha | Mar 21, 2008 2:03:23 PM
This just makes it worse for Obama. Both are soft on illegal immigration which is a HUGE problem for both of them.

Hispanic here. Endorsement does not matter. Already voted for Hillary.

Boy Obama sure does want to change the subject - too bad it won't work.

I knew Richardson was going to support Obama when shortly after dropping out of the race he was on CNN with a Go T. Unfortunately, during the interview, Solidad O'Brien made fun of the fact that Richardson snorted while he laughed, not particularly cool and he was embarassed. In any case, being that he's a Latino, I wonder why Hillary had the Latino vote while he didn't....I guess Latino's vote for candidates over race. As a Latina, I am glad we vote for Hillary.
Posted by: irma | Mar 21, 2008 2:06:28 PM
Anthony...I find it interesting that you speak for "the majority of Latinos" in the country. I thought that Latinos, including Gov. Richardson, are Americans and can vote for whoever they want.
Posted by: Maria | Mar 21, 2008 2:06:42 PM
The only people the pastors remarks are a "topic" to are the media and opponents of Obama.
Frankly the People and voters of the United Staes are sick of hearing WHAT SOMEONE ELSE said...
Posted by: Paul Fratus | Mar 21, 2008 2:07:03 PM
Why didn't Mr. Richardson make the endorsement much earlier? Why now? Richardson is probably pressured by the Obama campaign to do it now in order to distract the American people from Obama's decision to embrace and endorse his white-hating and country-hating pastor for the last 20 years. Anyway, it is quite apparent that Richardson endorses this OVERLY-AMBITIOUS and INEXPERIENCED man with a hidden African-American agenda at this crucial time in order to gain personal political favor.
Posted by: tom | Mar 21, 2008 2:08:09 PM
Obama/Richardson - thats America's winning ticket - ticket to Hell.
Posted by: teenc | Mar 21, 2008 2:08:49 PM
The only reason Richardson is supporting Obama is because Hillary wouldn't give him the VP position.
Obama, of course, told Richardson that he is one of the top candidates on his list to be VP.
The problem here is that Obama lied to him like he lied to all the American people that he hadn't heard Wright's sermons. Bill will soon find out.
Wake up Bill R.

Posted by: Bill | Mar 21, 2008 2:10:20 PM
Yeah Anthony; I am in complete agreement with you because you are correct. Richardson does not represent us Latinos, that's why we voted for Hillary instead. I bet he's JEALOUS that we rather vote for Hillary, because we are loyal to those who have proven themselves with us.
Posted by: irma | Mar 21, 2008 2:12:53 PM
This endorsement at this time is designed by the Obama's campaign in order to distract the public from the controversy of Obama's embrace and acceptance of his white-hating and country-hating pastor, Wright for the last 20 years. Does Obama have a hidden agenda against or in favor of a particular race?

Can we please stop with the "I'm Hispanic," "I'm white," "I'm black" - whatever. We're ALL important and we need to do what's right for ALL of us. We've all had different experiences, but we all want the same things.

Bill Richardson's New Mexico endorsement for Obama...Hmmmmmm. Is this why it took New Mexico three weeks to declare Clinton the winner? He was probably trying to cheat for Obama!

I have lost respect for Bill Richardson given he made this endorsement post-Wright/Obama fiasco. I could have understood if it was done before. I can only believe there is a job for him that has been promised.
Posted by: Susan | Mar 21, 2008 2:15:36 PM
This endorsement today was clerly designed to give Obama something good with which to end a horrible two weeks. I have to say that I was disappointed by Richardson's endorsement. He is the governor of a state that went for Hillary, with a great deal of help from the latino population of New Mexico. Richardson is obviously not in tune with the latino electorate. Richardson certainly did not "respect" the majority of latino voters, and I believe this will work against him. Hillary is the better candidate, she has more experience, she is a hard worker, and she does not give up. These are the attributes I want in my president. Hillary 08!!!!

I see nothing 'courageous' about either Barack or Richardson. Barack wants to portray himself as a phoenix, when that is not the case; he wants to portray his pastor as a senile uncle who doesn't know any better, (whom, by the way has an undergrad degree, two masters degrees, one doctorate ANd eight honorary doctorates), so that is not the case; he wants us to think his white grandma was a racist, which I would bet is not the case; and then he wants to portray me as a 'typical white person' when I gave him the benefit and consideration I would give any candidate, regardless of their skin color or religious affiliation. Barack gave the speech on race to stem the tide of realization in this country that people are getting the feel of what he truly is and what his belief system stands for. His wife is proud of this great country for the first time...His paster says God damn America...Barack promised Hope and Change and all we got was another lying politician....Lying about Rezko and property and donations and affiliations and everything else ad nauseum. Barack is not fit to lead this country. If he can't stand up at some time during 20 years of black national rhetoric and say this is not for me, this is not who I am, how can he show the good judgment to lead this country out of the mire and forward. He can't do it. He will not win the nom with or without Richardson's help - who by the way is rumored to be a vp consideration for Barack, so I assume it was politically expedient for him to endorse at this point in time for his own misguided goals. Finally, if Barack does happen to snow enough people to get the nod, there are enough democrats disgusted with him and all this nonsense to go vote McCain, which I will do and I highly recommend it.

Bill:Obama what a joke with what happend this week. Who in the USA could vote for obama.
I will be voting for Obama. Because you Hillary Clinton crazy people want everyone to hate Obama because of something he did not say but his Pastor said, you think everyone in America is going to follow you? Not me. I stand for myself and speak for myself. You do not own my vote. NOW WHAT?
Posted by: Karen | Mar 21, 2008 2:22:33 PM
I really don't get what people do not understand. It is not possible for Clinton to surpass Obama in the popular vote count. If the superdelagates want to unite the party, then they must go with the popular vote. Therefore, Obama will win the nomination, and rightly so. He is by far the best candidate. Hilary always talks about her accomplishments in the White House (which are really Bill's accomplishments) but never takes blame for everything that went wrong. She is manipulative, and only cares about herself. If by some rare chance she did win the nomination, there is no way she would win the Presidency. All of Obama's supporters, myself included, would vote for McCain. So, she really needs to drop out now so Obama can soley focus on beating McCain in November!
Posted by: Cardinal | Mar 21, 2008 2:23:49 PM
So much for representing the will of your constituents. That's why the Latinos would not vote for snort laughing Richardson. By the way, remember when all of the Obamacans were posting angrily against Richardson in the belief that he was trying to rig NM for Hillary. Suddenly he's their hero...such fickle bunch.
Posted by: irma | Mar 21, 2008 2:25:16 PM
Don't get me wrong, I like Richardson - he's an accomplished and I think, sincere man. On the other hand, he never got more than about 4% of the votes - so does anyone care what he thinks or who he endorses? He dropped out because not enough people cared to listen to him. I actually liked his stance on most issues and appreciated his candor.
Posted by: Jenna | Mar 21, 2008 2:26:49 PM
Why is Obama so great??? He is just a politician with what some call good speech making. Personally, his delivery is irritating to me. He acts like he is the second-coming and I find that disgusting. Richardson is a buffoon so who cares who he supports. I just want to know what Obama promised him to get his support. Get over the entertainment factor of Obama and you will see the crap underneath.
Posted by: Kris | Mar 21, 2008 2:27:26 PM
I appreciate Bill Richardson's honesty and honest last characterization of Obama, an opponent who will lend you his help to avoid and prevent your public embarassement, an opponent who understands that there is a tomorrow after elections and that democrats will close ranks and files to support their nominee Obama against McCain. OBAMA/RICHARDSON

As a life long resident of New Mexico - until retiring to Hawaii five years ago, I know Governor Bill Richardson to be a sincere, dedicated, tireless public servant with good judgment and the best interest of the public at heart.
His endorsement of Senator Obama for President is part of a growing wave of the future. AMERICA IS FINALLY READY TO RESUME ITS LEADERSHIP ROLE ON THIS PLANET.
On this Good Friday, I am thankful to God for his mercy, strength and blessings to us all, and I am a proud supporter of Bill Richardson and Barack Obama as "contributors to the cause."

All of these Obama so-called racial issues will be forgotten when CLinton releases her tax returns. His speech was a reconciliatory speech and yet we're getting more divisive response from those individuals in our society who weren't going to vote for Obama anyway.
Posted by: Win | Mar 21, 2008 2:31:39 PM
Obama is playing the soft, well spoken, your only choice democratic candidate game. Too bad Richardson has teamed up with this guy. Obama is a person who doesn't particulary like his grandmother, never talks about how his mother was an inspiration to him. Instead he has all this shady characters who inspierd him and whom he calls friends. Why? Because all this people are black and hate America.

On the text alone, "OBAMA/RICHARDSON" will do little to sway the Hispanic vote for folks who don't know who he is. Much in the same way people are surprised to see that I'm Asian when I have an Irish maiden name.

he had many chances to lead and change at his church, but he chose not to, instead he subjected many children including his own to the evil sermons and teachings, like the madrasahs.

Hillary has brought together and a similar number of people vote for her. Why is Obama having a popular vote total and delegate total close to Clinton's such an achievement for him and not for her? They are bascially tied. Why does he get credit for that? He has brought together as many people as her. Why does he keep getting to say sorry...sorry for the Wright, sorry for Rezko, sorry for saying there was not a meeting with the Canadians, sorry for Samantha Power..and why people are ok with it.
Posted by: Jim | Mar 21, 2008 2:37:03 PM
I rather have a cheater as a President, but patriotic one. Obama doesn't give me confidence he won't sell out this country to the terorrists. Looking at his track record and association with people who hate America,I wouldn't put it past him.
Posted by: Kim | Mar 21, 2008 2:37:53 PM
Richardson is a super delegate. He votes against NM's choice. But that's ok since it's within the rules defined by the party. I just hope that Richardson sets an example for other super delegates to vote their own wills.
Posted by: esvida | Mar 21, 2008 2:38:39 PM
The Obama haters are really funny when they can't even keep their attacks consistent. First they insist that Obama disown his pastor and friend because of some comments that only they perceive as racist. Then they criticize Obama for "throwing his grandmother under a bus" (whatever that means) for criticizing her racist rhetoric. I thought that was what you wanted him to do? Make up your mind!!!
Posted by: jock59801 | Mar 21, 2008 2:38:53 PM
Kudos to Gov. Richardson. Obama's elected delegate lead means that he almost certainly will win the nomination. A few more key super delegates need to follow in Gov. Richardson's footsteps by endorsing Obama to signal that the race is over and his Democratic opponents should put away "the kitchen sink". The party can then work to heal its wounds and get focused on the Presidential election. Obama will be a compelling presidential candidate and a great president!

He should take off for the Oregon Coast. It's beautiful this time of year. A big chilly so bring a warm jacket, but a walk on the beaches there is so rejuvenating. And don't forget to get some of Mo's famous clam chowder! He can also make a stop through the beautiful wine country of the Willamette Valley while he's there too. The time has come to decide if we THE PEOPLE want to really change the direction of our nation.
, or do we need to keep this family fight between us going for a longer period
? While am sure Hillary would make a terrific president.
Its time to face the fact that for our country’s sake we need to stop this primary election and once again come together as a country not just a party. My comment is not just for democrats but for all those of us
That are part of this UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Our country will need all of us to change its direction. If we don’t come together the same people that have govern up to now will keep us in the same direction…Look the war was a lie. We Americans were lie to! Was the war for oil?? Who knows does not matter how or why just that it has to end….Obama has pledged to end it! In a responsible manner that’s the best alternative of all the candidates on the table. Yes he might be young but I for one want to think he is honest. ND MAY GOD BLESS OUR NATION.

McCain is going to have Condy or Powell as VP, so who else are you going to vote for?
By the way, Nader is going to have Al Sharpton on his ticket, so who are you going to vote for?
The next time Hillary or Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly are going to be on the ticket is going to be 2016, even then they might still not win.

I have to wonder about his mother's motives to go to America, give birth, then return to her native country of Mexico. His father then sent him to boarding school in Mass after age 13.
I also have to wonder about Obama's motives. From Obama's book: "Dreams From My Father" in which he states "The White man will never reconcile with the Black man until we become brothers in Islam", and, "I have a deep aversion to my Mother's race", and, "The person I most admire is my half-brother - he converted to Islam".
He and Obama are two peas in a pod. Both profess to be something they are not and both are unelectable.

Fair enough, Bill Richardson.
A majority of the voters in New Mexico support Senator Hillary Clinton, and you endorse Barak Obama.
Doesn't that go against the idea that superdelegates are supposed to represent the will of their voters?
Perhaps Bill Richardson feels that the Ted Kennedy/John Kerry abandonment of their voters justifies his behavior.
Or, perhaps we all need to step back and consider the source of the endorsement.
On more than one occasion, Bill Richardson has faced criticism as to whether his personal conduct can withstand public scrutiny.
Specifically, Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico, Diane Denish, told reporters from the Albuquerque Journal that she avoids standing or sitting near Richardson because of his physical manner which she describes as "annoying."
Dennison said Bill Richardson "pinches my neck. He touches my hip, my thigh, sort of the side of my leg."
Governor Richardson calls any suggestion questioning the appropriateness of his behavior as "mean spirited."
Hillary Clinton, John McCain, and Ralph Nader probably won't be "mean spirited, but I doubt whether they will lose any sleep over the Richardson endorsement.

LOL, Obama a true leader????? OH man, I still needs to see one single time he has shown leadership, not only in Illinois (proven leadership), with this Pastor's bigotry, with his personal friends, in the US Senate? etc. This all all he has done is running for the Presidency now and be the puppy for the big politicians in Illinois while he was down in Springfield!
Oh I get it, Richardson, like McKaskil, like Daschle and Kennedy think he can unify the world because he is black and he comes from the oppression repression!
Pleasssse! enough of the Obama "marketing" nonsense. Obama has a chance during 20 years to show leadership and din;t! he has shown tho that is a very disciplined calculated politician!
Obama the 7 faces man! (White, Black, Asian, Irish, Mixed, Afrikaner, Indonesian)

Listen, all sides contributed to this mess including FL & MI, so if we want the votes to count the only FAIR thing to do is Split the votes BETWEEN the two candidates so everyone at least gets some of what they want. WE all need to discuss this like adults and look for uniting and positive solutions. Where is the voice of reason. Look at the numbers.

I already plan NOT to vote for Obama
under any circumstances and if he
selects Mr. Los Alamos Spying Taco
Breath as his VP choice, we are emigrating to New Zealand.

Clearly, Obama has promised Richardson something he values more than friendship... The VP slot or his choice of cabinet positions, no doubt. It certainly wasn't the deliriously lame speech Obama delivered. Thankfully, most Hispanic voters have already made their choice, Hillary Clinton.

Obama: "I do not want to see research that is involved in trying to tear people down personally. If find out that somebody is doing that, they will be fired."
His campaign has gone all out negative with a series of PERSONAL attacks on Clinton. Just words, Mr. Obama?
He is not a new generation of politics--he's the same deal as everyone else. Glad to see he's checked into the world of reality finally.

It is funny when some people endorsed obama, they all said he has right leadership, judgment and inspiration for people:
The fact is:
1. Leadership: NO because he has not been in any public leader position yet;
2. Judgment: good judgment on house market; anythng else, wrong or unknown
3. Inspiration: excellent - the same as his mentor Pastor Wright..
Anything else is just dulplication....

I remember when Richardson said he spoke French but then when confronted
by someone who did, couldn't even
pronounce 'Francais' properly, let alone
utter one additional word..what
a BLOWHARD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Thanks Anthony. You are right! Bill Richarson DOES NOT AND NEVER WILL speak for us. I also agree with drpolitics1, yes, Bill might try to cheat for Obama that why it took so long to have all the votes counts in New Mexico.

I forgot to mention the biggest flip flopper of all John Kerry who also thinks that Obama is the messiah that America needs and the one that "because he is black the Muslims, Egyptians, Arabs will listening to"
Interesting to say the least that all the guys supporting Obama now - the Candidate of Change" are the same OLD establishment that has been in Washington Dc for many years and the same corrupted Illinois machine.
Go figures! Obame the true leader! LOL

Today soon to former governor Bill Richardson endorses Obama against the will of the people in his own state. He is now disowned in the Hispanic community.

Honesty. It’s only a word today. Several times over the campaign Obama said that it was important that the superdeligates vote the way of the people of their state. Then they romanced Kennedy (I agree he can be a whore) to rally upcoming states on their behalf even though according to their own admission he should have support Clinton like the people of his state. Now it’s Richardson who along with Obama campaigned that superdeligates should vote the way of their state then moved beside Obama even though his state clearly supported Clinton. Now the story has changed and they both say the superdeligates should vote the way of the majority. Neither are honest nor brave. Flip Flop.

Time for Hillary to throw in the towel. She can't get the votes or delegates she needs. Her candidacy has been bad for the Democratic party and bad for America. Sorry Hill, maybe in 2016 you can be Richardson's VP.

Cmon guys...Obama couldn't change the 8000 people in his church for 20yrs....When the opportunity came he was in a bow-tie, thumping Wright's back for saying 9/11 is what America deserved.....do you really think he is going to CHANGE let alone change America?

I like Obama - despite what many of you have to say. Anything is better than McCain and Hillary is old news.
I am not particularly fond of Richardson, but I think he made the right choice to endorse Obama.
For you Latinos who think Hillary will care about you - you are right! She cares about your vote. That's all!

jock59801: you miss the point. The fact is his pastor did make racist comments. He should have treated him like he did his own Grandmother. Both made racist comments and both should have been called out and disowned. But the coward chose his racist pastor over his own Grandmother. That is what is meant by throwing her under the bus. He condemed her to save his own skin and his pastors. Obama is full of double standards. He says whatever helps him and whatever people want to hear. He is playing the race card and I for one will not vote for a man full of hate.

Let the Veepstakes begin... right now, somewhere, Edwards is being wooed by the Clintons.
Obama/Richardson - interesting combo. The GOP will have to work hard against that one. McCain will try and divide the Hispanic vote and get the disaffected Hillary vote. The 527s will aim their campaign to middle class, working class whites, and Asians... that will get ugly. Right-Wing vs. Wright-Wing!
And unless Clinton concedes... you still have a Convention fight on your hands... unless of course Obama chooses Hillary as Veep. Either way - still very do-able!

It is soo SAD to read the replies on this blog. We can not see that we are our own worst enemies. If we don't change, I don't blame the rest of the world for sitting back, shaking their heads and laughing as our whole economy(which they are buying bit by bit) and what used to be "admired" society, goes up in flames. God has not Dammed America--"we the people" have. It is soo SAD. We need to wake up !!
