Bill Richardson endorses Barack Obama
March 21, 2008 1:48 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson made his endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for president official during a rally in Portland, Oregon Friday.
Appearing side-by-side with Obama, it took Richardson only thirteen words into his speech to mention Obama’s speech on race in Philadelphia this week, one he dubbed “historic.”
“Senator Obama could have given a safer speech. He is, after all, well ahead in the delegate count for our party’s nomination. He could have just waited for the controversy over the deplorable remarks of Reverend Wright to subside, as it surely would have. Instead, Senator Obama showed us once again what kind of leader he is. He spoke to us as adults,” Richardson said.
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
As the nation’s only Hispanic governor, Richardson said he was moved by the speech knowing the struggle of Hispanics in America, “As a Hispanic, I was particularly touched by his words. I have been troubled by the demonization of immigrants, specifically Hispanics, by too many in this country.”
Richardson also cited Obama’s opposition to the Iraq war in 2002, and his intended plan for withdrawal as the foreign policy leadership that he believes America needs.
The governor, who worked in the Clinton administration and has long ties to both Clintons, explained his decision: “My great affection and admiration for Hillary Clinton and President Bill Clinton will never waver,” but added that Obama is part of the new generation of leadership that can bring the country together, “It is time, however, for Democrats to stop fighting amongst ourselves and to prepare for the tough fight we will face against John McCain in the Fall.”
Calling Obama a friend, Richardson told the story of when, as a presidential candidate on stage with Obama during a democratic debate, he was not paying attention to a question that was asked of him by the moderator. Obama, sitting next to him, an opponent at the time, whispered “Katrina, Katrina” to him, Richardson recalled.
“He could have thrown me under the bus,” Richardson laughed, but said his then-rival backed him up.
Obama accepted Richardson’s endorsement, saying that he couldn’t be more honored to have “the support of one of the great public servants to the United States.”

Can we please stop with the "I'm Hispanic," "I'm white," "I'm black" - whatever. We're ALL important and we need to do what's right for ALL of us. We've all had different experiences, but we all want the same things.

I call Richardson a "Once in a Lifetime Buffoon.."

Bill Richardson's New Mexico endorsement for Obama...Hmmmmmm. Is this why it took New Mexico three weeks to declare Clinton the winner? He was probably trying to cheat for Obama!

I knew Richardson was going to support Obama when shortly after dropping out of the race he was on CNN with a Go T. Unfortunately, during the interview, Solidad O'Brien made fun of the fact that Richardson snorted while he laughed, not particularly cool and he was embarassed. In any case, being that he's a Latino, I wonder why Hillary had the Latino vote while he didn't....I guess Latino's vote for candidates over race. As a Latina, I am glad we vote for Hillary.

I have lost respect for Bill Richardson given he made this endorsement post-Wright/Obama fiasco. I could have understood if it was done before. I can only believe there is a job for him that has been promised.

This endorsement today was clerly designed to give Obama something good with which to end a horrible two weeks. I have to say that I was disappointed by Richardson's endorsement. He is the governor of a state that went for Hillary, with a great deal of help from the latino population of New Mexico. Richardson is obviously not in tune with the latino electorate. Richardson certainly did not "respect" the majority of latino voters, and I believe this will work against him. Hillary is the better candidate, she has more experience, she is a hard worker, and she does not give up. These are the attributes I want in my president. Hillary 08!!!!

Tom:
You are so right. Obama only want to distract people and hide his dirty trick.

Thankfully Anthony doesn't speak for all Latinos and Latinas!
And, for those still trying to nurse the Wright story along, Martin Marty, a well-respected theologian with no axe to grind has expressed his support for Trinity United Church of Christ!
Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!

I see nothing 'courageous' about either Barack or Richardson. Barack wants to portray himself as a phoenix, when that is not the case; he wants to portray his pastor as a senile uncle who doesn't know any better, (whom, by the way has an undergrad degree, two masters degrees, one doctorate ANd eight honorary doctorates), so that is not the case; he wants us to think his white grandma was a racist, which I would bet is not the case; and then he wants to portray me as a 'typical white person' when I gave him the benefit and consideration I would give any candidate, regardless of their skin color or religious affiliation. Barack gave the speech on race to stem the tide of realization in this country that people are getting the feel of what he truly is and what his belief system stands for. His wife is proud of this great country for the first time...His paster says God damn America...Barack promised Hope and Change and all we got was another lying politician....Lying about Rezko and property and donations and affiliations and everything else ad nauseum. Barack is not fit to lead this country. If he can't stand up at some time during 20 years of black national rhetoric and say this is not for me, this is not who I am, how can he show the good judgment to lead this country out of the mire and forward. He can't do it. He will not win the nom with or without Richardson's help - who by the way is rumored to be a vp consideration for Barack, so I assume it was politically expedient for him to endorse at this point in time for his own misguided goals. Finally, if Barack does happen to snow enough people to get the nod, there are enough democrats disgusted with him and all this nonsense to go vote McCain, which I will do and I highly recommend it.

Good attempt to distract public's attention from the Wright fiasco. Too bad, it won't work !!

Another Hispanic here for Hillary. Bill has turn his back on the Hispanics.
Posted by: Joe | Mar 21, 2008 2:19:26 PM
Bill:Obama what a joke with what happend this week. Who in the USA could vote for obama.
I will be voting for Obama. Because you Hillary Clinton crazy people want everyone to hate Obama because of something he did not say but his Pastor said, you think everyone in America is going to follow you? Not me. I stand for myself and speak for myself. You do not own my vote. NOW WHAT?
Posted by: Karen | Mar 21, 2008 2:22:33 PM
I really don't get what people do not understand. It is not possible for Clinton to surpass Obama in the popular vote count. If the superdelagates want to unite the party, then they must go with the popular vote. Therefore, Obama will win the nomination, and rightly so. He is by far the best candidate. Hilary always talks about her accomplishments in the White House (which are really Bill's accomplishments) but never takes blame for everything that went wrong. She is manipulative, and only cares about herself. If by some rare chance she did win the nomination, there is no way she would win the Presidency. All of Obama's supporters, myself included, would vote for McCain. So, she really needs to drop out now so Obama can soley focus on beating McCain in November!

So much for representing the will of your constituents. That's why the Latinos would not vote for snort laughing Richardson. By the way, remember when all of the Obamacans were posting angrily against Richardson in the belief that he was trying to rig NM for Hillary. Suddenly he's their hero...such fickle bunch.

Don't get me wrong, I like Richardson - he's an accomplished and I think, sincere man. On the other hand, he never got more than about 4% of the votes - so does anyone care what he thinks or who he endorses? He dropped out because not enough people cared to listen to him. I actually liked his stance on most issues and appreciated his candor.

Why is Obama so great??? He is just a politician with what some call good speech making. Personally, his delivery is irritating to me. He acts like he is the second-coming and I find that disgusting. Richardson is a buffoon so who cares who he supports. I just want to know what Obama promised him to get his support. Get over the entertainment factor of Obama and you will see the crap underneath.

I appreciate Bill Richardson's honesty and honest last characterization of Obama, an opponent who will lend you his help to avoid and prevent your public embarassement, an opponent who understands that there is a tomorrow after elections and that democrats will close ranks and files to support their nominee Obama against McCain. OBAMA/RICHARDSON

jijalgi - thank god for a sane voice in the dark, finally someone who gets it. Nothing in this country will ever change until we get away from the current 2 party system.

Well I'm still voting for Hillary just one more loser who is backing Obama who makes it a habit to look down his nose at people.

As a life long resident of New Mexico - until retiring to Hawaii five years ago, I know Governor Bill Richardson to be a sincere, dedicated, tireless public servant with good judgment and the best interest of the public at heart.
His endorsement of Senator Obama for President is part of a growing wave of the future. AMERICA IS FINALLY READY TO RESUME ITS LEADERSHIP ROLE ON THIS PLANET.
On this Good Friday, I am thankful to God for his mercy, strength and blessings to us all, and I am a proud supporter of Bill Richardson and Barack Obama as "contributors to the cause."
