Clinton "Glad" Obama Delivered Race Speech
March 18, 2008 3:44 PM
ABC News Eloise Harper Reports: At the top of Clinton's Iraq-focused speech of the day, standing beside Valerie Plame, Joe Wison and Mayor Nutter – Clinton addressed Senator Obama's speech admitting to not having read or seen it – but said she was "glad" that he delivered it.
"Before begin to some comments about Iraq I want to start by saying that I did not have a chance to see or to read yet Senator Obama's speech – but I am very glad that he gave it, it's an important topic. You know issues of race and gender in America have been complicated throughout our history and they are complicated in this primary campaign. There have been detours and pitfalls along the way but we should remember that this is a historic moment for the democratic party and for our country. We will be nominating the first African American or woman to the presidency of the United States."
Clinton received six questions about the speech – including one from a man who asked if she would be giving a speech like his. "I cant say I would do anything like his because I don't know what his is but I can tell you that I will take a look at it and you know I have a lot to say about a lot of issues whether I give a speech or not I can not predict."
Clinton was also asked why she was "glad" that Obama delivered the speech.
"Well I think it is important to address these issues of race and gender and I am looking forward to reading it which I haven't had the chance to do. But I think these are difficult issues but and we have seen this in this campaign race and gender are difficult issues and therefore we need to have more discussion about them so and obviously the more that Senator Obama and I try to talk about it or try to put it into some context, the more people will feel free to do so as well."
Clinton was asked about her transparency and told reporters "this will be an exciting day for all of you" and explained how the national archives were going to release 11,000 pages of her schedules tomorrow.
Clinton then said, "Stay tuned. There will be a lot more so that the books and writing and words about me will continue to fill many archives and warehouses around the world."

DCVoter, you are again all over the place with your support to Hillary. There is nothing presidential in what she has said, she was afraid to touch race issues a hot potato, coward attitude.

igo - hey fellow golfer, let's not forget about the 2 week suspension of Kelly Tilghman for a remark that even Tiger did not object to because they are close friends and he knows she didnt mean anything by it - just a joke. The Channel over reacted to that one. I dont remember if he objected to to Fuzzy or if that was the network or PGA decision. To get along we all have to be able to laugh at ourselves and let the past go. But it is difficult if it is someone we do not know.

If Hillary was to make a speech on the race issue, the bias media would immediately spin it and label it as insensitive and racist! Its a no win situation for a white candidate.

Pure unadulterated vanity is how that read. Ugh.

he wants it both ways. he wants his white grandma when it suits him . he wants to be aa when he needs them and i think a little jewish in there just to get their vote.
in other words he will be whatever he needs to be when he needs to be it. it's not just achange of heart. something we all might do at a given time. he is all over the board all the time. he's sneeky. he'll have tocome clean before i would even vote for him in 8 years. right now i'll go republican before i vote for obama. not a chance of me voting for him.

Is she stil getting away with saying she hasn't read it? How is that a Presidential response? I don't believe her, anyway. If she hasn't read it and doesn't have the grace to acknowledge its significance, she's not as smart as I thought she was before this campaign.

ok somebody explain to me how jeb bush got those votes counted in fla. when brother george was running for president and george had a problem. now fla. and michigan can't get the votes counted. hmmmm. seems strange to me. they did it once we can do it again. a little different but by golly if we can do it for george we can do it for the democrats. fair is fair.

oh but clair she is very smart to make a no comment statement on something that is obamas own mess. let him dig himself out. why should she say anything. take the chance of the media blowing it up in her face and give the edge back to obama. she is very smart. i'm glad you're not running. did you think this through at all. silence is golden. Have you ever heard that statement. holds true so true for hillary. let him bury himself.
GO HILLARY

Igo, we just see it differently. I don't see it as Obama's mess. I see it as a brave and honest speech on some truths that we need to duscuss. I said "smart" meaning the person I used to think she was, the one who really cares about these issues. I didn't say "strategic" as in everything to win, rather than what's real and good for the country.
How does saying "I am glad you aren't running, did you think this through at all" add to real exchange of ideas? Obviously, I am not a candidate, I am a voter (one who is supposedly in "her" demographic) who has followed and thought about this election.
If she wins the nomination fairly, I will work for her in the general election. If the party machine gives her the nomination after he wins popular vote, delegate count and states, I will leave the party, as will many others.
