Clinton: "Never Underestimate The Intelligence Of A Voter"
March 04, 2008 12:00 PM
ABC News' Kate Snow and Eloise Harper Report: Outside Henderson Elementary in Houston, Senator Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., said she's very optimistic about her chances in Texas and Ohio and would not entertain a question about whether she would take a day or two to evaluate her future after Tuesday's results.
Clinton did indicate she plans to persevere.
Asked about a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, which finds that Democrats by more than a 2-1 margin say Clinton should stay in the presidential race even if she loses either the Texas or Ohio primary, Clinton said: "Never underestimate the intelligence of the voter."
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
"This is a long process as some of you have heard me say before," Clinton said. "My husband didn't get the nomination wrapped up until June. That has been the tradition -- that it usually lasted longer."
Clinton began the day at the elementary school, the voting site for a heavily Hispanic area with traditionally one of the largest democratic turnouts in Houston.
Most of the voters who held "Hillary" signs and greeted the Senator had been called by the campaign and came in from other parts of the city. A few were voters from the neighborhood.
Clinton also plans to stop by Herrera's restaurant in Dallas to greet voters before heading on to Columbus, Ohio for an election night celebration.
It has become a tradition for Clinton to greet voters -- with donuts in hand -- on primary days.
"We don't quit working until the last votes are in and the last people in Texas show up," Clinton said. "I just believe in working on election days. I don't pay a lot of attention to what people say."
Clinton did express some dismay at the voting process being used in Texas.
In Texas, Democratic delegates are allocated through a combination of the results from primary votes and separate caucuses.
Clinton said her campaign would play by the rules established, but that "when the dust clears, we have to ask some tough questions" about whether the process was the best system.
Her campaign has argued -- and she argued again on Tuesday -- that when people have a limited window to appear at a caucus it makes it difficult for many voters to attend and participate, particularly working voters. Barack Obama has fared much better in caucus states thus far.
Asked if she was concerned that this primary battle could become a protracted and negative fight, Clinton said she was not.
"This is one of the most civil and positive primary campaigns that I can remember," Clinton said. "There are contrasts. And it is imperative that those contrasts be drawn because voters in a Democratic primary have to decide who would be the best president and the best nominee."

Iraq Vet The reason Obama hasn't closed the deal is because people like you are not letting go that you had the wrong candidate...Hillary always has had the blindly lead in her numbers that won't back down...the problem isa majority of Americans will not vote for her...her ceiling is lower than anyones and now with all the negative and mudslinging that she has brought out. Well can anyone imagine that she has a chance ...and she opened the negative scandal material...where are we now...
...do you all forget why Al gore felt he could not look to the Clintons for support. Do you understand as you are throwing out Rezko and a refuted facts conversation by the canadian government as a scandal for Obama...who Hillary is.
Do you realize it is not common ...even in politics...for someone to have lists...not one two or three but lists of scandals... you allopened the wound with your Obama hasn't been vetted...your right Hillary has... thanks for opening the character issues...ugh.
Posted by: klondike | Mar 4, 2008 1:23:55 PM
She even has a case going on right now in california... something to do about her Senate seat... and you have not seen Obama go anywhere near these issues... and you wonder why we like Obama so much. Not that it was right and , no we don't know all the details but oh a land deal... thrown at Obama's character ...Hillary doesn't have one of those.

the clintons have never underestimated the intelligence of the voters, they absolutley count on them to be uninformed and stupid. All of this 'dirt' kicked up around Obama, much of it released by the Clinton camp has added up to exactly zero. Afters investigations and hundreds of news stories, no wrongdoing, anywhere. however, HRC still has not released her taxes to explain how she came up with $5MM on short notice. Still not released her papers as first lady that will suppossedly verify all of her foreign policy experience.
All of HRC's Political experience has lead her to this point, where winning the contest is more important than serving the people.

That's funny, lluluadorl.
Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 4, 2008 1:42:16 PM
Dogsoldier you are kidding right? No I am not blaming Hillary for Rezko...but her camp is the one pushing the story. The meeting happened correct and Barack should have been aware that one of his advisors had been approached by the Canadian embassy and spoke without consent from the campaign, and the statements in the press that were supposedly stated have been refuted by all parties involved oh, besides the man who leaked them to the press Brodie...a staunch conservative.
...and I don't know when being educated suddenly became a bad thing. There is something wrong in America when being educated is being used as an insult...but believe it or not even with how I type...I am.
By the way ...Shall I post ALL the scandals from the Clintons ... do you not know there was a land scandal,a little thing that went on for years and many Americans still have questions about... perhaps you don't remember all of the issues...and that her land scandal involved 40 million dollars...and she was actually the subject of the investigation. How about Peter Paul...do you know about him? Now shall we open up the Bill and Hillary file since you all want to throw that all out there.
These are just the tip of the list... I am just trying to show what this negative character fights that Hillary has opened up are going to bring now.

Louis--I can promise you it wasn't by staying at home and let others support her. Or, by going to the local charity hospital and letting someone else pay her medical and prescription bills.

james,
You've got it exactly right. I'm not an active supporter of Clinton, but I think that, were she to win the nomination, Obama hasn't made statements that would call into question her ability to do the job. He has been very good (though not perfect) about suggesting that he believes he'd be better, but she is not incapable.
Meanwhile, she has made comments like "He's not good for the country" and "If he can't beat us on national security, how could he beat John McCain?" The latter sounds to me like their going so far as to say McCain is even *stronger* than her on nation security. There's nothing wrong with a vigorous campaign, but she's providing the Republican nominee with ample ammunition to go after Obama if he becomes the Democratic candidate.
And that's just not smart.

Obama= way 2 many questions!!
Michelle Obama= unpatriotic!!
that is why I voted for Hillary Clinton!

He cannot speak against Farrakhan while financially supporting and participating in his church without being a liar.
One of those things is a lie--I think ACTIONS speak louder than words!

Klondike,
Welcome to "presidential politics". It is no game for "kids". Throw all you want, HRC will remain standing. Ask a certain Ken Starr. However, the problem is your man, Obama. Has he got "skin"? He is already running from the press! And the fun part has not even started. Wait till Karl Rove gets in on the action. But the "comedy" wont get that far. They are enough real people out there with real concerns to make sure that s..t doesn't happen

We need to vote for the person that WE feel is the most qualified. DO NOT VOTE TO KEEP THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY TOGETHER. Vote with your head and your heart. Don't vote because the obamamaniacs are telling you if you vote for Hillary you are voting to destroy the Democratic Party. The Democratic party will survive. Please do not follow the obama parade on this vote.
Posted by: Lou | Mar 4, 2008 2:07:25 PM
Well it's funny the how Hillary's scandals are all rumors... think how well Hillary has done so far in this primary...with DEMOCRATS...no republicans, no independents, no swing states...and all her scandals have been in the press...uh...when?
Everyone keeps asking why the press has not questioned Obama on this Rezko thing...but Hillary hasn't had her past (and many unanswered questions...oh besides taxes and white house documentation oh that's right...and that does not come close to what's to come oy)...brought into the debate.
I am positive Hillary will still stand after the attacks...the question is will the Democratic Party.
Obama did not play on questionable assertions and that speaks volumes to who is more of the President that America wants.
Posted by: klondike | Mar 4, 2008 2:09:19 PM
BTW, klondike, what makes you think because you vote Obama makes you somehow more of a democrat than anyone who votes Hillary? What in the heck are you thinking? How could you possibly come up with this nonsense?
Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 4, 2008 2:23:35 PM
Closing the deal has nothing to do with it. Republicans are crossing over to vote for Hillary Clinton to drag it out and try to split the Democratic Party in half. Can any Democrat tell me why this is a good thing? So, if you wanted to save your party why would you allow this to happen? With a divided party neither of them can win. Hence, she should get out.
Posted by: john | Mar 4, 2008 2:30:33 PM
How patriotic are people who lie to get us into war!!!!
Posted by: james | Mar 4, 2008 2:36:27 PM
Lou, the party is already destroyed! Just look at all the comments on this board. Look at the how easy it is for the double standards to be overlooked, as long as its not Obama, its ok.
Apparently, Rezko and even Farrakhan is all they use, and because they are so disingenuous (giving most of you the benefit of the doubt), that will be what they continue to push. Just like Hillary. And klondike, I think it was, was right. Obama has not degraded or belittled queen hillary....he has made not one attempt to tear her person down. And if he did, oh my....I can hear the cats squealing now.
double standards, inconsistent, ambiguous...nothing but distortions and manipulation. But if she were out front they would want everyone to support her. HA, not this dem. Just like you, I would rather see her lose than to vote for her. She's a liar, period.
What an act for all women to follow.

John, with reference to Republicans crossing over to vote Clinton, have you forgotten Obama's mailers starting back in Nevada to republicans to be a democrat for a day to vote against Clinton? Or did you have selective memory? Furthermore, we have been saying for some time that we believe only democrats should choose the democrat candidate, but up to this point in time no one seems ready to say there are problems here. On Kelly Anne, I know how the internet piece reads, but how does the actual court transcripts read as opposed to some writer giving his/her definition of what actually occurred.

Bill, it is not mathematically impossible to catch up in the delegate race, just as it was not impossible when Obama caught up. Stop posting as though you are all knowing. Especially since your're wrong.
Posted by: irma | Mar 4, 2008 2:40:58 PM
There really must be something "taken in" at those Obama rallies that make ALL his supporters sound so stupid. Is your seeping hatred related to politics or are you in the early stages of something more serious. I advice you see a psychiatrist... fast!!

The electoral picture between Dem and Rep looked bleak from the start for the Reps. The RNC is not stupid. Their only hope for a win in Nov is to use a divide and conquer strategy - fuel fights between Dems to give them time to unite the Rep party and to select a nominee they can control. They appear to have that nominee.
The RNC press release 6/13/2007 by their opposition research is the reason Obama was embarassed into donating Rezko funds to charity although his camp accused Clinton. The trial is the reason the media is vetting the issue although his camp accused Clinton. The RNC did another press release 1-2 weeks ago pushing the media to vet Obama and pushed for Rep voters to cross over and vote for Clinton. Once again, the Obama camp accuses Clinton.
The CTV media vetting the NAFTA issue is the reason he is taking heat there. Timing and perception are everything in politics. His judgement is what is being called into question.
The Clinton camp is not doing anything any other candidate in a primary race wouldnt do and that is defend the attacks about judgement when that is the premise of Obama's campaign. He put it out there, she defends herself and attacks back as would anyone.
The RNC wants Obama to be stupid (since he is naive and has never run against the RNC machine) and blame Clinton for the things they are doing. Notice Clinton is not stupid enough to blame the Obama camp for anything. She competes against Obama directly not his camp.
Now the electoral picture is looking strong for Clinton and weak for Obama. Given that Clinton has 14+8+7=29 years experience against the Rep machine combined with being heavily vetted by 40 mill of our tax dollars being spent by the Rep machine, they know she can beat McCain. What they want to do is prevent a unity ticket and drive Dem voters to vote for McCain. That is their only shot and they are going for it.
Clinton has always emphasized the most important thing in this election is the defeat of the Rep party nominee. Party unity is required and a smart experienced nominee is needed. She can beat them and has already been "rescuing" Obama. She reached out with another subtle suggested two days ago for Obama to make his communication and meeting documents public to show transparency to beat the RNC to the punch. She knows this is what it takes to beat the Rep machine. He is just not listening. New voters are just not aware of what is going on. It is up to all of us who are active voters to help them understand and unify the Dem party at the convention.
Clinton the smart choice for smart change. Vote Smart!
