Clinton Supporter Gov Rendell Supports Cuomo Plan to Guarantee Dream Ticket
March 30, 2008 12:31 PM
ABCNews' Mary Bruce Reports: Clinton supporter Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell backed this morning Former New York Governor Mario Cuomo's proposal to guarantee a "dream ticket". Cuomo has suggested Obama and Clinton agree now that whoever does not win the nomination will become the vice presidential candidate regardless of the outcome. "Well, I can't speak for Senator Clinton, but I would love that," Rendell said in an exclusive "This Week" interview. "I think that this duo, regardless, is a history-making duo. They are both tremendous candidates. They both would make great executives, and I'd love to see that happen," Rendell said.
Obama supporter Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., however, disagreed. "That's the privilege of the nominee, and it's certainly one of the options available to him, and it would be terrific in a lot of people's minds. But you have to leave the nominee that option," he said. But Kerry also noted that "whatever judgment he [Obama] makes will be the right judgment."
In addition, Kerry said he believes a nominee can be determined by July 1st. "I think that the superdelegates ought to decide early. I would even say earlier than July. As a former nominee, I will tell you, this time right now is critical to us. We began four years behind George Bush, and I think every day does give John McCain an ability to organize nationally. So the sooner we resolve it, the better, but it has to be resolved, obviously, by letting voters have their say."
Rendell supported Sen. Clinton's plan to continue the fight until the convention. "Hopefully, the Obama forces will allow all 10 states that remain on the calendar vote, and allow Florida and Michigan to vote. It's a disgrace that the Obama forces say, well, he's won the popular vote so he should be the nominee. There are 10 states left. I think Senator Clinton's going to eat into the popular vote," he said. "I think if Michigan and Florida actually voted again, Senator Clinton would come out on top of the popular vote. So I think the key is to let the party -- it's too late for the states, but let the party run the primaries in Michigan and Florida."

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Clinton Supporter Gov Rendell Supports Cuomo Plan to Guarantee Dream Ticket:
I think this is a brilliant proposal by Mario Cuomo. Either way, there is a guarantee that both of these candidates will share the ticket. That allows the campaign to move forward with certainty. The fight becomes for the top slot on the ticket but both candidates and their supporters still understand that they are on the same team.

The majority of Democratic people want Hillary.
The DNC and high power dems, want to play God and political fix.
If Obama is on the ticket everyone I know will change parties.
He is not fit to be president or vice president, Of this Great country.

Clinton on any ticket = Republican record turn out = Democratic loses in Presidency, House and Senate = all of this progress for nothing.

I really liked this idea a few weeks back but it would be hard for me to overlook the daily assaults and smearing of both Hillary and Bill Clinton's reputations by the Obama campaign. But look at 1960 when Kennedy teamed up with Johnson. This time though I'd put the experienced, tested candidate at the top of the ticket.

Why all this debate about seating Michigan and Florida now? Why didn't they bring up their concerns about disenfranchisement when the rules were first created rather than accepting them?
Posted by: Dem | Mar 30, 2008 12:48:26 PM
You have to ask Why July 1st? The only reason that these surrogates are trying to hurry it up is to shorten the vetting process for Obama. They fear that given more time the press will turn something up.

Tested and Experience candidate? Is that the one who claimed to be under sniper-fire, or the candidate that claimed to help negotiate peace in Northern Ireland. Really tested, but not fact-checked. This Clinton experience is a big illusion, all built on lies and deception and no one has double checked any of it until recently.
The Majority of Democrats do not want Hillary, Obama has been cruising around 50 in national polls lately, and Hillary is sitting with a scary 37% approval rating.
Clinton supporters need to wake up and smell the coffee, her boat is sinking faster then the titanic, the supers will be the first to jump. Heck some already have.
The choice is clear, a fresh start for America, domestically and internationally, or more Bush. Its pretty clear we have more in common with each other then we do with the McBush Republicans.

This is an ridiculous idea proposed by Cuomo and just as idiotic for Rendell to offer his support. Those of us that support Obama (which is the majority of the democratic party, whether you count by delegates, states, or actual votes) want no part of Clinton on the ticket when he accepts the nomination. Essentially they're making a feable attempt to get her back in the White House at any cost, even if it's as VP. Obama will have his pick of VP candidates that are significantly better options that Clinton.
Posted by: Kevin | Mar 30, 2008 1:17:11 PM
Not if you know Obama should not be in office.
Posted by: seah | Mar 30, 2008 1:20:35 PM
Mario Cuomo belongs to the PAST and so are is quirky ideas!
Hilary Clinton is too divisive to achieve anything worthwhile in Washington.
Only equally self-absorbed Bill Clinton has the stomach for the self-absorbed Hilary Clinton.
Posted by: New Yorker | Mar 30, 2008 1:24:00 PM
Obama on the ticket would be a win for McCain. It should be Hillary with the Ohio governor or Florida Senator or Pennsylvania governor on the ticket.
Posted by: Doreen, Buffalo Grove, IL | Mar 30, 2008 1:26:02 PM
Every time I see comments that say if Clinton gets the Democratic nomination, it will equal a republican president makes me laugh. The ONLY reason why people post these "opinions" is because they know deep down that America is ready for another Clinton to clean up the mess of the republican party.
Posted by: Keith | Mar 30, 2008 1:26:13 PM
Hmmm,..Have a feeling that whom ever don't support this idea will get a letter from Clintons 20 Fat Cats,... ;-)

If it was a good idea a few weeks ago, it is not a good one. What with the Wright controversy, Obama will be like ball and chain for Clinton.

Funny how Obama supporters diss this idea.. whose divisive now?

Why doesn't the media point out that the Clinton campaign continues to try to bully America into forcing Hillary to be on the ticket?
Hillary's disapproval ratings are catching up to president Bush.
Hillary lied about SCHIP.
Hillary lied about NAFTA.
Hillary lied about Bosnia.
Hillary has been called a liar by the Irish peace negotiators. The more Hillary pushes, the more upset the Irish have become.
Hillary has taken millions from federal lobbyists.
Posted by: Dan | Mar 30, 2008 1:49:24 PM
If Hillary is credited 8 years for being in the white house,..Then should also take credit for election campaigning twice before!
Meaning she should know the importance of and how to win caucuses
Know the importance of winning small states too
Learned by now how to balance a campaign
account
Sometimes simple things like that explains the value of ones experince and judgement.
Hillary should not be on the ticket at all,....well it really don't matter because come 2012 she will lie and say that she was,..
Gimmie a break and do the math shes done!
Posted by: eXcellente | Mar 30, 2008 1:51:51 PM
It's a mistake for Obama to be on the ticket in any capacity. It's a losing proposition for him, Hillary, and the rest of us, no matter what half of the presidential ticket he's on. If he receives the top nod, the republicans will crucify him, and if he's Hillary's VP, the republicans will still crucify him. It's naive to think the republicans won't use the on-going Wright scandal against him. It's an even more naive to think the public will forget it by November. This is the best case scenario even if nothing else emerges from Obama's dubious past.
Posted by: Emily | Mar 30, 2008 1:58:57 PM
I really do not understand the clinitonians argument. She is not winning and cannot win. You are the ones trying to steal the election! If she thought Michigan and Florida was so important why did she agree to not to seat them previously. This is a competition not a change as you go kiddie party. What is wrong with you people are you trying to change the democracy of the country.
Hillary only won OH & TX because she lied about her experience. Geez talk about desperation. Go to the other party you people probably voted for Bush in the first place!
Posted by: fairgame | Mar 30, 2008 2:08:54 PM
MI & FL voters did come out to vote,.. BUT it was for local and state elections, issues, concerns and props.
What about all the new voters that did not sign up to vote due to no campaigning,.. or the ones that actually knew the vote wouldn't count and did not show up?
The DEMS voter turn out increased in every state expect MI & FL,... need I say more,..
Posted by: eXcellente | Mar 30, 2008 2:13:29 PM
What Kerry fails to acknowledge is the fact that Obama is unelectable. Here's why.
1.)Obama has won primarily caucuses, which although are a legitimate win, are not reflective of a GE or the will of the people. Smoke and mirrors as it were and just bragging rights leveraged to convince the public that he is the leader. Once all voting is done and Fl and MI are seated, he most likly will trail in popular vote.
2.) A vast majority of Americans are suspicous of his association with Wright, which is a very legitimate concern. Obviously, Obama's rise to fame was generated and masterfully crafted by Rev. Wright. He now owes Wright, and not in a small way. That in itself is an alarming proposition.
3.) Eventually the "newness" of Obama will wear off and Americans will start asking themselves, "Who is this guy and does he really care about our country or is he just trying to even an old score, how much experience does he possess to run our country and what has he done thus far that is of concern for ALL americans, not just the BVS?"
And therein you will find Obama's greatest skill. Evasiveness. The master of illusion who can skillfully lay out the most beautiful of Mirages......
Americans will no doubt ask themselves at some point....Did Obama "Pledge his allegiance to Africa" as part of his indoctrination to TUCC? And if so, what allegiance, if any, does he have for the United States of America?
This is why, IMHO, if there were to ever be a dual ticket it would have to be Clinton/Obama if the Dems have any hope of patching things up. Too many longtime loyal Dems will not have this fellow shoved on them. He's too far left....and the Dem loyals will flip to the right. If only for one election cycle.

You mean a nightmare ticket. Why would Obama want Hillary "Lieberman" Clinton wasting valuable office space? Besides, according to her, she's already been "Co-President". Notice how she never mentions Al Gore, who actually did serve as co-president with Bill Clinton. Leave the "former" Goldwater girl back in the past where she belongs.

Well I think we should leave it to the up to the Democratic Candidate.
Obama08
Posted by: Thinking | Mar 30, 2008 2:26:45 PM
I think it's an excellent idea. It's a fusion of inspiration and pragmatism, just what the country needs. I can see Clinton agreeing to the vice presidency, but not Obama. He's been dismissive of the dream ticket so far. If the divisions soften between the candidates and their supporters, then it is a possibility.
Posted by: katrina | Mar 30, 2008 2:28:51 PM
Floridians did not only show up to vote for the local and state elections. Although I knew my vote for Hillary wouldn't be counted I voted for her anyway. That is the only reason I showed up for the election. If everyone wants Obama because he can unify America, how come all of his followers are attacking Hillary with such personal insults? It would be great to read a rational discussion of Obama vs. Clinton based on the issues instead of personal attacks. I voted for Hillary in the Florida primary but if Barack gets the nomination, I will happily vote for him for the presidency.
Wach of these two candidates has strengths and weaknesses but either one would be far superior to John McCain.

WestCoastMessagner, what veting process is needed after all, what is remaining, doing the dirty job for McCain. If that is the best way to go, then continue with Hillary "the Bosnian sniper" that inside fight, at the end McCain will win. Gd bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.

I do not see how this ticket can work out. Obama is the man for "CHANGE" and very much against lobbyists contrary to Hillary.
How can anyone cook these two different people together in one pot!
Posted by: Peace | Mar 30, 2008 2:55:29 PM
Nancy has said it already, Hillary the "Bosnian sniper" you cannot go in front of TV camera and say that McCain is better than Obama and be on the same ticket with him. Bill was on TV saying that McCain is a patriot and his wife is a patriot, and Obama is the "stuff" and think he will be on a same ticket with her. The Clintons have destroyed the dream ticket and it has become a fantasy ticket. Obama will take Jim the senator of Virginia as runing mate, wait and see. God bless America and Good bless obama. OBAMA08.

First of all Kerry is an idiot. Secondly, Richardson is a TRAITOR. Thirdly, Ms. Pelosi is jealous of Hillary Clinton...God forbid another woman (or a woman in the WHitehouse) Hillary would take away attention from our Little MIss Pelosi
KERRY, RICHARDSON, DOBBS AND CASEY HAVE ALL BEEN GUARANTEED SOME ELITE POSITION IN THE WHITEHOUSE IF MR. OBAMA GETS ELECTED.
ISN'T IT IRONIC THAT EVERYTIME OBAMA GETS AN ENDORSEMENT, THAT PERSON GOES ON THE OBAMA BANDWAGON AND TRIES TO GET HILLARY TO QUIT THE RACE.
How dare Mr. Dean and Mr. Leahy and all the idiots mentioned above call for Hillary to quit the race.
I am sick and tired of these politicians trying to get their way, by denying voters in the furture states to vote, and how dare they tell us that our votes don't count.

The Gallup polls are so fake. I do not at all believe in any of the polls.
Remeber in California when the polls had hillary by double digits behind, and then she goes to overwhelmingly win that state.
If you go to the Rasmussen polls, they seem to be the most accurate.
Any Cnn polls or gallup polls are fake.

SadstateOFAffairs: You have said it best. I believe this article tries to put words in Rendell's mouth. He was giving a possible solution if needed, not what he thought was the best plan. He believes all the voters should be heard, the next 10 primaries and revotes in Michigan and Florida. As much as the DNC wants unity, I do not believe that Obama is electable against McCain. His weaknesses would show up in an even brighter and glaring light against McCain.

From her sinking ship Hillary is desperately trying to jump on board of the Obama steamer.
She'll be food for the media sharks, and nothing else.

Steve,
worse then who, Hillary?
As I explained before there is not a party who going to do a thing about abortion. All Politicians give lip service to it, it's a tragedy, it shouldn't happen, agonizing decision, but none do a thing; including the Republican Party.
As much as I would like to vote on one single issue, I have in the past, and got into a War of Choice in Irag, loss of money to organizations, that might actualy help a pregnant women or unwanted baby. I have come to the conclussion ity dosen't help.
Please don't tell me Hillary dosen't support Abortion.

I have to agree that the bottom line is that if Obama wants the nomination based soley on delegates and popular vote, he cant have it both ways.
Either he gives up his stance that he won the popular vote and delegate count as his argument, or he lets michigan and florida revote or count.
He cant have it both ways.

THIS MORNING ON THE WOLF BLITZER, THE PANEL WAS SAYING THAT OBAMA IS TEARING THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY APART.
HE HAS HIS GOONS IN CHICAGO CALLING DELEGATES TO TRY TO CALL THE RACE NOW TO GET HILLARY OUT AND TO DENY THE NEXT 10 STATES THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE.
WORD IS THAT PENNSYLVANIA IS GETTING REALLY ANGRY AT THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN IN TRYING NOT TO GET THAT STATE TO VOTE.
HE(OBAMA) IS GETTING ALOT OF NEGATIVITY FROM THE VOTERS IN THAT STATE.
HE WILL LOSE VERY BADLY, IF HE DOESN'T SHUT HIS MOUTH, AND GET HIS GOONES OFF THE SUPERDELEGATES BACKS.
LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE NOT YOUR GOOONEY GOONES, MR. OBAMA.

Hillary Clinton is determined to destroy the dem party unless she gets whats she wants. If the majority of the democrates wanted Hillary she would be winning. I will not vote on the dem ticket if she is any where on it. This women has shown that she cares for no one but her selfish desires for power.I pray Obama would not take the VP position if she manages to steal the nomination. She has the worst character of any human being.

Hillary is not as bad as Obama and you know it! So stop using the abortion issue . If you were truly against abortion you would not want av president whom will extend the laws to make abortion worse, especially with his trying to repeal the BAIPA Bill.

It is the sole prerogative of the nominee to chose his/her VP.
Strange isn't it - Ms. Bosnia once considered Mr. Obama unfit to be president and now that her efforts to win the nomination have been shattered, she is asking her surrogates to beg and beseech the Obama camp to consider the remote possibility of condescendingly offering her the VP spot.
That would be suicide: far too much baggage to carry to victory.
Posted by: Desdemondo | Mar 30, 2008 3:51:26 PM
The polls that should really count are the votes in the remaining ten primaries and the revotes in Michigan and Florida. That, we can believe.

I think the only ones voting for clinton are the uneducated masses. Most of these will be easily mislead.
This bunch mirrors most of society's problems including racism. The educated masses mingle more and on a daily basis have learned to adjust to other races.
They hoped that the muslim allegation against obama will stick now lo and behold they think he is a racist christian.
The truth is they themselves are racist and they neither have the clarity nor the intelligence to find it out for themselves. It is always the other party that is always wrong.

Let's get avowed Clinton supporters to gain control of the nominee's first big decision by creating consesus of who he must name as VP.
Rendell is the surrogate doing his duty, but joined by Cuomo whose son worries that Clinton would run for NY governor and close his political path designed by Daddy.
Mario: You are no disinterested party elder.
Ed: stop pretending you are doing anything else but angling for your next career move into a new Clinton reign.

THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE!

Also, check the numbers on the voters in those states. There were no landslides for Hillary in NY & NJ. A bunch of BO supporters in those areas whose votes were suppressed due to broken machines, long lines, and names not listed in registration logs!
I have friends in FL (BO supporters) who were told not to vote because it wouldn't count! How's that for suppression.
So please don't expect us to "feel" for Hillary.
The DNC will decide when MI & FL will be seated, not because Hillary wants it.

Obama is no asset to anyone, he is tainted with the Wright issue and his associates of his past, Hillary does not need Obama that will damage her political career in more ways than one.
If he wins the nomination Hillary should take no part in tagging with him, she can do a lot better for her political future by staying far away from that guy.

Hillary Clinton wants to join Obama as VP. Not by asking him, but by having her agents cook the deal. This is becoming like a horror movie where you think the monster is dead, and it suddenly jumps back on the screen and keeps attacking until a wooden spike is driven through it's heart.

Funny, Hillary is called the Liar and Obama is the Saint... But the Liar shows up for work more often, and has done more bi-partisan work than the Saint.
As far as NAFTA, how many First Ladies do you know who publicly stated anything that was to the detriment of their husbands? So you and I don't know what was said only that she sat in on the meetings. And her main concern was that NAFTA was getting more attention than health care. And, having lived in Europe, I can say that socialized medicine is not the way to go. But we have two socialist candidates with an agenda. Ask anyone who receives care from the VA on how government health care works for them.
Oh and let's not forget the missing Obama papers from the Illinois State Senate. If he claims to have more governmental experience then where are THOSE papers? Of, I forgot, they are transparent. Three years into his first term as State Senator, Obama (who then went by Barry), ran for Congress. So I can not see that he is really for the people more than he is for himself.

The Clinton camp manifests of funding problem, they can't pay their bills from Iowa to Ohio to New Hampshire after Pennsyvania the fund will run out dry and no more donations will come because donors knew that it is a lost cause, fool me once shame on me , fool me twice shame on you.

What makes Obama a con, and Hillary legit?
Because he believes that we can build a better America?
We have smelled the coffee. In fact I'm on my way to starbucks now...

sb, not all Dem are dumb. I will stay home or vote for John McCain. More likely, I will vote for John McCain, I don't think he can and will make thing worst than now.

Omentum, Do you think most of the people who vote for Obama during Caucus in those Swing states are the real voters who will vote for him in General Election? Wakeup, many of them possible just want to throw Hillary in the cold water so they can easy beat Obama in this November 04. Mark my word! Anyway, without winning big States, there is only “HOPE” for Obama for being US President.

In fact, I am thinking to vote for Clinton/Obama if there is a case but after Wright story, my decision is different now and I think many moderate Dems and independents will do the same.

So who should I vote for? McCain is the same age as my grandfather. I just returned from my cousin's funeral after he was killed in Iraq. I can't see voting for someone who wants others to go through that pain. My family is pretty much blue collar workers who have had their share of losing opportunities to blacks AND women and I personally don't want to see either of them in charge. Listening to you people knock each other down and knock down the candidates makes me want to puke. Why can't there be a middle aged white guy who will bring the country together instead of my grandpa, a woman who can't seem to keep her lies in check and a black guy who can't silence his minister? Since I WILL vote, the lesser of these 3 evils is probably the black guy. Maybe I can get over my racism since I can't get over my ageism or sexism quite yet.

Damn John, sorry about your cousin but I am glad you are willing to un-burden yourself to us strangers. One day at a time son. If you are willing to evaluate yourself so closely for the sake of an election, there is hope for you yet. I'll say a prayer for you tonight so maybe your sexism is dealt with next.

Ah it seems and sound like ransom... the whole Hillary strategy to win the nomination for the office. To me her political career is over. Forget the Governorship of NY but she probably may even loose the senate re-election due next for her... Also she has set a bad precedent for the future women running for the offices... the 'big boys' wud have an excuse not to opt for then... coz they r too much friggin' melodrama...
10 hours ahead of US Eastern Time here at Vikram University She has already lost much support b'coz of her antics, negativity and arrogance... We all hope and pray that she may run short of the funds and drop out... We are pretty sure that her funds are drying up and new one hard to come by... so hopefully by May 6 she would do all of us a favor and drop outta race for the White House.

Big John, sorry about your cousin. I don’t think Clinton or McCain can and will make thing worst than now but for Obama only God know because he is untested.

As a liberal, I would not vote for ANY ticket with Hillary Clinton on it. Period.
Posted by: Thomas Mc | Mar 31, 2008 11:06:30 AM
Hillary's ego would never let her accept being VP. And, if I was Obama I would not want the Clintons looking over my shoulder. This "dream ticket" is a fantasy envisioned by Clinton supporters. Putting the concept out there is simply a political ploy by the Clintons aimed at folks on the fence that they don't really need to choose hence vote for Hillary....

It was a good idea that Obama will be on the ticket few weeks ago but not any more. "WE DON'T WANT OBAMA TO BE EITHER PRESIDENT OR VP".
We cannot trust Obama
Posted by: Not any more | Mar 31, 2008 4:08:55 PM
Rendell is a joke just like Clinton if he thinks people can't see through this charade. the only reason he is making this suggestion is because Clinton is losing and he is trying to secure her position so he can collect on whatever she promised him. Hillary should not be president, vice president and she may lose her senate seat after lies and mismanagement of a campaign. previously she gave her campaign 5 million now it looks like she may have to write another check to the tune of 8.7 million.
No thank you Rendell we don't want Hillary Clinton polluting the Obama ticket

Hmmm... a possible sixteen years of Democrats in the White House versus a probable four for either candidate alone?
What's not to like?
Democrats have been in the dog house long enough and right when they can get out, they resnap the leash to their collar. Yeah, we're stupid alright.

Are these people nuts? Any chance of an Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama ticket was killed and I mean murdered when Hillary attacked him personally. That idea was put to rest when she treated him as if he was her Republican challenger instead of her Democratic opponent. Shame on her. I guess she isn't as smart as people gave her credit for afterall. If she is intelligent as claimed, we sure didn't see it judging by the manner and tone her campaigned was conducted.

Kevin; the true, long term committed Democrats want Hillary, very few are for Obama.
Posted by: irma | Mar 31, 2008 9:42:00 PM
If Obama was treated like a Republican opponent, it's because he has the Republican press pushing him on us as well as Republicans who are being mischieveous voting for him. Meanwhile he uses Republican dirty politics.

Dean and company want to stop the race because they are afraid of everything else that will come out about Obama. They screwed this election up from the start. They had no right to deny the voting results in FL and MI. Howard Dean did not have sense enough to just run a clean campaign with no controversy. He is punishing the voters in FL and MI, not the candidates or the parties. Over four million Democrats. If only 25% of them vote Republican becuse of it, it will make a noticeable difference. Dean knew that FL at least would give Hillary a big win, so he had to get rid of the votes. I think it will come back to haunt him. When the history books are written, it should attribute the loss of the 2008 election by the Democrats to Howard Dean, and his power trip. And hopefully, it will list the name of his successor, to be chosen ASAP.
