Democrats Divided? Bill: 'That's a Bunch of Bull'
March 28, 2008 2:28 PM
ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf Reports: At a campaign stop for his wife in Kannapolis, North Carolina, former President Clinton weighed in on the protracted Democratic nomination fight.
Clinton dismissed talk about whether the nomination battle between Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is dividing Democrats.
"That's a bunch of bull," he said.
"I wasn't nominated until June 2nd, 1992," he argued, then said maybe it was June 3rd.
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
He told several hundred North Carolinians that the race should continue because, "you have a right for your votes to get counted."

We shouldn't listen to Bill. I doubt there's a Democrat alive who knows more about 'bull' than he.

The only "bull" here is coming from BILL! He will NEVER shut up! Can't wait until Hilliary gets in and he gets to have a press conference along with hers every time. It will be so nice to see that Hilliary is SO qualified that she will need to have a "co-president" beside herself at every turn. So much for being her own "girl."

I don't think Bill will urge Hillary to get out of the race until he has secured his postion as McCain's vice-presidential nominee. Why else would he be on the stump praising McCain so much? He's determined to get back into the White House one way or the other!

In Indiana - we've not played part in a primary since Robert Kennedy campaigned here. Funny that all of the sudden Bill's worried about me, here in Indiana, voting. Oh wait - his wife is behind!!!
Read the spin, people, read the spin...

I think there is. Don't you think Hillary (liar-liar- pant-suit-on-fire Hillary) knows better? Bill is just a puppet on a string.

She isn't dividing Democrats anymore than Obama is. Maybe the reason she doesn't quit is because at least 50% of actual Democrats (not independents and crossover Republicans who caucused for Obama because they just hated Hillary) want the most qualified candidate, not the most politically correct one. We need to have a choice as long as possible in case other disturbing facts arise about Obama's beliefs and value system. If he had waited and run in a few more years after Americans had really gotten to know who he is and what he represents, and had actually achieved a national record to run on instead of rock star status, we wouldn't be having a problem.

Bob Casey endorsed Obama today. This should make PA very interesting. Although I think Hillary should drop out now, if she doesn't win PA by a huge margin she should immediately pack it in. Otherwise, she just hurting her party...

Alright Bill, we'll count the votes, but the outcome is still the same. Hillary loses. Why are you so intent on ruining the Dem party this election. I hate to disappoint you, but you won't be seeing your third term. Put your ego and that of your wifes aside and do what's best for the party.

What an intelligent man Bill Clinton is! Hillary is equally intelligent, if not more so. She deserves credit for assisting him in being successful. His presidency was very successful. With the vote being so close, he knows that the situation can change quickly. The Obama camp wants to say they have it all wrapped up, but they do not.
Cut short the process? We know why. They are afraid that the sky will fall before the Convention. If they crown their king now, he will win the country by a landslide. This experienced Democrat does not think so. The one person who has been the toughest in this campaign is Hillary Clinton. She has beaten back the Karl Rove/Republican playbook first used by Obama in one of the earlier debates in this campaign. She has fought back against the vast cable news network. She has endured so much ridicule that an ordinary person would not survive. Guess what, she is still standing, she does not throw in the towel, she never gives up, and my Lord, she is tough!
Bill is right on this matter. It is a bunch of bull to talk about division before everyone has voted. If I lived in Pennsylvania, or one of the other primary states, I would be mad as hell. I would want my vote counted. I am a lifelong Democrat, I have worked for the Party, and I would be mad as hell to be denied my vote.
With that said, Go, Hillary!

Uh the Republicans (like Limbaugh) are voting for Hilliary. Can anybody here read a newspaper. (It was in the LA and NY Times so it MUST be true...) Is it SO wrong for DEMOCRATS to choose who gets to represent the DEMOCRATIC party??? Strange days, indeed!!!

This talk of Clinton being SHOVED OUT of the race should send a clear signal to folks that there is a LOT of BS , and that Clinton never had a chance.
Obama cant get 2024 delegates, and needs super delegates to win, and you expect Clinton to drop out? Why?
on what grounds?
In other words, what is the point of having this process at all if they are having a back room deal right now?
If you take a look at all the shucking and jiving the Obama camp is doing, it beome ridiculous.
You want the 'will of the people' but then stop the process with 10 states left. Even though Obama hasnt won.
?????????????????????????
Im telling everyone quite clearly now that the MEDIA is going to get ROASTED ALIVE when all this is said and done.
When all the smoke clears. When all the fuss is over and they look back on this democratic nomination process, it will be CLEAR that the LIberal media HYPED Obama into the nomination.
You Obama fans dont mind. Not until the day comes when the media TURNS on Obama. And that day will come.
Then you too will realize how devastaing and dangerous the media really is.

WestCoastMessager, what else is remaining, which next name you will give to Obama. Illegal votes cannot be counted, votes without DNC rules and regulations will not count, votes with the input of republicans cannot count. Also, if you listen to Bill Clinton he will never see the hand writing on the wall. The game is over, time for the democrats to get together behind Obama and win the White House. God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.

It will be interesting to see how soon all of the Democratic leaders like Kennedy, Leahy, and Kerry who jumped on the PC bandwagon early on will be trying to make up with the Clintons if she does drop out. If I were them, I don't think I could forget those who forgot that the Clinton's had helped them campaign and supported them when they needed it, just because they thought having an African American President would be much more historical and politically significant than having a woman elected. They wanted to be part of "the wave." Just watch all of the back slapping, instead of back stabbing, when they want Bill and Hillary to come out and support Obama if he does take the nomination, which I suspect will happen as they media wants it to happen. A lot of pundits just don't get it, people who support Hillary do so because of her experience, thorough knowledge, and passion for the issues. These are things Obama just doesn't have now. Especially for those who are more moderate, Obama is simply not a choice in November, no matter how much Hillary may be pressured to publicly say we should support him. Myself, and a lot of people I know, cannot in good conscience vote for Obama after the divisive and under the radar sneaky campaign he has run this year. Top that off with character issues and bad judgment which has been shown through the Wright issue, you have a recipe for not voting, or voting for John McCain. It has nothing to do with anyone's race or gender, just plain common sense. (Plus the fact that baby boomers and "uneducated" voters who actually had to go to work instead of college when they were young were pretty much ignored or written off as a thing of the past early in Obama's campaign, and we haven't forgotten the disrepect.)

As a political analyst, I am quite convinced that the protracted rivalry within the Democratic presidential campaign, which has, for the most part, been instigated by Hilary Clinton’s insistence on “going all the way”, could only amount to political suicide for the Democratic Party. This, of course, in turn, would cost the Democrats not only the November election, but also would lead o the disenfranchisement of the next generation and those who feel neglected by history in this country. In this campaign, it has become obvious that Obama represents the voice of the youth and those who are tired of the old system and its politics of cronyism, and are craving real change in the political landscape in this country. On the other hand, Hilary Clinton represents mostly the working-class who nostalgically clings to the memories of the economic boom of the 90’s, the repeat of which, from an economic standpoint, is quite unlikely, given the gargantuan tasks ahead, such as, how to end the war in Iraq and Afghanistan (Which some people seem to have forgotten about. America has some 20,000 troops stationed there), and the existence of major international players such as China and India, whose demands for oil and other resources make the repeat of the 90’s nothing more than a just wishful thinking and a pipe dream. America needs an overhaul in its political scene, something that only a new voice that reflects the aspirations of the new generation can achieve. A personality whose charisma can rally people together and can bring about renewed hope. Of course, the word ‘Change’ can sometimes be frightening to some, simply because it might mean letting go of the old habits, which often die hard. However, judging by the state in which America has found itself, thanks to the current Administration’s abrasive policies, both home and overseas, change is inevitable and this can only lead to building a better and stronger America. America and Americans can not afford getting stuck in these political bickerings and divisive policies of ‘Us’ and ‘Them’ while countries like India and China are rising as the new politico- economic powerhouses.

I really wonder why Republicans who say they will cross over and vote in Democratic primaries hate this country so much? Our founding fathers established a democracy based on fair elections. Tampering with that process isn't just "meddling," it is traitorous conduct that undermines the very foundation of this country.
Many people have sacrificed their lives to defend the system we have, and to protect it from those who would subvert it for their own ends.
I'd love to hear from a Republican how he or she squares such behavior with what I'm sure is how they think of themselves - as patriotic. And I mean an honest response, not some snark that only enables you to evade the immorality of your actions. Until then, shame on you. And shame on those you admire for encouraging you to behave in such an un-American way.

View,
Apparently, as a political analyst, you've forgotten the salient part of the process that allows the voices of the electorate to be heard. Have you also forgotten that political contests are typically riddled with mud slinging? Snark attacks are nothing new, although they’ve been perfected, in my opinion, by the Obama camp. Hillary didn't invent the conditions for intense rivalry, and her "going all the way" is a fundamental element of the primary process. She has every right to go all the way, and with probable wins in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana, what’s the rush to push her out? Forcing the Clinton withdrawal issue is far more destructive to the democratic process than letting the will of the people play out.

If Obama supporters have so much confidence in him, why are they trying to stop the race before all of the states have their say?
Why are they making a case to follow the rules in Michigan and Florida and trying to break the rules by saying the people need to get angry if superdelegates do not vote for the candidate that won their state?
If Obama really believes that superdelegates have to vote for the candidate that won their state why does he still count Kerry, Kennedy and Richardson among superdelegates that belong to him?
Obama already put up a roadblock so Michigan and Florida will not be able to vote against him and now he is trying to stop the race before the last 9-10 states have their say. Wonder if the remaining states approve of the way he is trying to disenfranchise them?

Slick Willy was born campaigning--and eats, breathes, and sleeps campaigning. It's what he does, it's all he does. Even as he left DC in January 2001, he was still campaigning with his big, interminable, obnoxious exit from office. What's the point of electing Obama only to have to impeach him in two years. Obama has an agenda way beyond anything we can see now. He loves the crown, but it's more than that. You don't listen to the Rev Wright for 20 years and not pick up on his ideas.

Bill Clinton has done more for this country and the Democratic party than anyone else in our recent history. Hillary has been a dedicated Democrat for years as well. Obama doesn't want states to vote because he's afraid of losing. That's not the democratic values last I checked. This process needs to continue until the entire country votes (and that should include Florida and Michigan.) It is absurd to ask Hillary to bow out of this race because she is going to win it. There is no way that Obama could win against John McCain. I for one would never vote for him.

Yeah, Bill, you may not have wrapped up the nomination until June, but you leave out a relevant fact: Your percentage of the vote in November was in the high 30s!!! Might Democrats have done better if they had settled on candidate sooner around which they could coalesce?

Considering a week is a lifetime in a presidential campaign, I'm not too concerned about the party being divided. It'll come back around.
If you want the nation saved - read Broken Government - it'll be a real epiphany and will unite everyone in a far more important way than party.
Now - I'd like to see the media focus on the cost per delegate with Obama/Clinton as they did with Romney/McCain. Obama outspends Clinton 2:1, but doesn't win by very large margins, if he wins at all. What does that say about his popularity? It's not what I'd call true.
But - it's keeping the economy going.

How can the Democrats forget that Bill Clinton was the only Democrat president elected for 2 terms in 27 years. How mean and unloyal the Democrats are. The old foggies of the party - Kennedy, Dodd, Leahy want Clinton to quit so that their puppet can win. They can't stand an intelligent, determined and self-sufficient woman to be president. They say Clinton has very unfavorable ratings with the voters, if so why is she not losing by large margins. The only reason Obama is ahead is that the campaign has thrown a lot of money to pay student political activists to stir things up and participate in the caucus states. Unfortunately that was the mistake of Clinton's campaign not being fully prepared for anything that can come up. Obama will be routed in the general election because his current lead is not really the result of people liking him but the manuevering of his campaign. I'd like the Democrats to bring him on for the general election so that they will get the surprise of their lives. The primary is not a good predictor of November elections.

I agree (this hurts) with Bill Clinton. Let's wait until all the votes in the primaries are counted.
But...Knock it off Hillary. You started the negative campaigning. Let's get this thing on a more civilized basis.
Continue on with the campaign. Do not seat Florida and Michigan. Play by the rules and pick a nominee.
We have three great candidates in the running. Obama, Mc Cain and Clinton each would make a better pres. than what we got.
We have got to quit bickering and get united around our president. Partisan politics needs to go away.

How can anyone support a candidate who is adamantly opposed to allowing the voters in two states to have their votes counted in this election? How can anyone support a candidate who has created more racial tension and divided people in this country more than anyone/anything we have experienced in over 40 years?
Hillary should drop out?
Consider...Hillary won the big states that will play a huge role in the general election. Since Obama's skeleton's have begun to come out of the closet many who voted for him early now wish they could have their vote back. Hillary won Florida whose delegates will not be seated as a result of poor decisions on the part of the Florida Democratic Party, the DNC and pressure from Senator Obama, not the will of the Florida voters. One in four Hillary supporters have indicated they will vote for McCain if Obama wins the nomination. One in 10 Obama supporters indicate they will vote for McCain if Hillary is nominated. I wonder how the voters in Michigan and Florida will vote in the general election if their votes in the Democratic primary are discounted and the candidate they supported does not win the nomination.
Posted by: Texas Voter | Mar 28, 2008 10:22:03 PM
Bill Clinton's dismissal of the widely held belief that the protracted Democratic Nomination fight is dividing Democrats as "a bunch of bull", should be taken, not with a pinch of salt, but with a spoonful.
This is typical of the Clinton spin game. One wonders what he would be saying if his beloved wife leads both in the delegate and popular votes count and Obama plays the role of a spoiler?
Even if we assume the contest continues and Hillary ends up with more delegates or popular votes (which according to all political pundits is not even remotely possible), Hillary would have only won the battle and would have sorely lost the war. So, Bill, where is the logic and sanity in continuing this battle? Unless and, ofcourse, if your objective is: my wife isn't winning so don't let the other guy win too! Let the other best man (according to your own assessment), John McCain, be the winner!
Bill, your game is up. Quit horsing around and do the honorable thing: take your wife back home where she belongs! After all, Americans cannot take a chance with a person who makes monumental mistakes under sleep deprivation. And, you know that, as a president, she will be sleep-deprived more often than not. One wonders how she would respond to the caller if the phone rings at 3am?

That makes a lot of sense. If you want legal torture, another couple of Scalias, endless war in the Middle East, endless culture wars, gay bashing, the end of civil and human rights, corruption of every single government office and agency then by all means vote for McCain. McBush.
For someone to say they'll switch parties makes me wonder if there isn't something else driving their decision. There has to be. The differences in the parties are too profound for that to make any sense.
By the way, Obama's pastor certainly isn't the only blowhard preacher who condemned the US. From Dobson to Hagee to Robertson to Falwell (and that's not even close to a full list) they ALL damn America for various annd assorted reasons, even claiming hurricanes are god's punishment. They've been welcomed with open arms by Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George Bush 1 and now W. Why doesn't the country go crazy over their anti-American comments? Why aren't Republicans being held accountable for what THEIR preachers say? Because it's considered prophecy when they do it.
The double standard and hypocrisy is staggering.
"How can anyone support a candidate who is adamantly opposed to allowing the voters in two states to have their votes counted in this election?"
That's a crock. We've been over this again and again. But I'll use little words so you can understand. Listen up. Florida and Michigan tried to leap-frog the other states. They were warned what would happen but they did it anyway. It's called CONSEQUENCES. What would happen if they were allowed to get away with it? The next election would be chaos. I don't like the method in place now BUT ALL THE CANDIDATES AGREED TO THOSE RULES. Now that Hillary is behind she wants to change the rules. Instead of acting like morons and attacking Obama maybe those people should blame those actually responsible for this mess, the state Democratic party leaders. But hey, it's easier to rip on Obama. Ever hear the phrase "you made your bed now sleep in it"?
"How can anyone support a candidate who has created more racial tension and divided people in this country more than anyone/anything we have experienced in over 40 years?"
This is just foolish. No one has ever divided this country as much as George W. Bush. Period.
Obama wants to talk calmly about race but some people insist on ratcheting up the hatred for their own purposes. He could probably do more but some people just aren't willing to give up their own misperceptions about race. It's a hard subject to deal with and I respect him for trying.

"OBAMA is a FAKE!!!!!
I will vote for McCain if Hillary's
presidency is stolen by OBAMA...
( I was a die hard Democrat. I voted for
Mr. Dean)
All the media just LOVE to attack Hillary!!!
Hillary!!! PLEASE DO NOT DROP OUT!!! I want to vote for you!!!! don't let my vote uncounted!!"
If you want legal torture, another couple of Scalias, endless war in the Middle East, endless culture wars, gay bashing, the end of civil and human rights, corruption of every single government office and agency then by all means vote for McCain.

What part of this don't you people understand? It is maddening to hear these people say this crap. It's bs. Weapons grade baloneyum. You voted Dean yet you're willing to hand the Supreme Court to the Republicans if YOUR favorite candidate isn't nominated?
Bottom line? I will support whichever Democrat wins the nomination. To do otherwise would be suicide.
We don't need another lying Republican ruining our country.

Non-trivia Question:
Who signed the same agreement that the other Democrat Primary contenders did
which went along with the DNC's decision to disenfranchise the voters of
Michigan and Florida and since she is behind wants those votes to count?
Who Lies every time she opens her mouth?
Hillary Clinton, That's Who!

Pennsylvanya Avenue is a good dream. But, I'm afraid it's just a day dream for the Clintons this time around. Why don't you die-hards wake up from your slumber!

Bill Clinton disgraced the office of the Presidency by looking Americans in the eye and lying to us. He doesn't deserve to be invited back into the White House to clean the toilets, But, at the end of the day, you have to say that the worst day of Clinton's presidency, was better than the best day of George Bush's. Bill Clinton has serious character flaws but at least he is not an inarticulate, incompetent, cowardly imbecile as his successor clearly is.

What are you thinking? Do you really think this election is about race or gender? How about looking at the situation that George Bush and his cronies have trapped America? You people, who talk about this as if it were a high school prom vote, don't seem to realize how deep the economic, social, international and spiritual hole this country is in. It's time to stop playing Trivial Pursuit and address real issues. Who has the intelligence to grapple with these problems and find solutions? Who has the personal power to bring people together to get sensible things done? Those are the issues. Personally, I don' think a machine-politician like Hillary Clinton has the capacity to do this; I believe Senator Obama might have that capacity. I believe he is the best shot we have to get a fresh start on finding solutions to deep and abiding problems. There is no way to tell for sure,
I've always liked John McCain. I believe it is a great tragedy that the Republican Party is so bigoted and twisted that they denied him the nomination eight years ago and gave it to the idiot currently in the oval office, but McCain has sold his soul to get the approval of the pond scum of Republicanism and his straight talk express has lost all credibility. He is not the same John McCain of 2000, he is a political and religious whore, who has disgraced himself for his ambition. In my estimation, sadly, John McCain can no longer be taken seriously. It is not an easy choice and our decision comes with no guarantee. But even the most obvious solutions have to be forced upon Washington, or they would have addressed our major problems already (energy independence, infrastructure; regulatory reform; tax restructuring; the minimum essential health care that must be made universal; drug policy reform that will end America's lead in the percentage of our citizens who are in prison (we have 750 prisoners per 100,000 citizens where communist China has 119) that is an expensive disgrace. We need a big thinker, with the character and the organizational ability to get big things done. That is why, if the Democrats are smart enough to nominate him, I have decided to vote for Barack Obama.

All of you nostalgic for the 90s and Billy should know that the current bloody mess on Wall St and soon to come to your neighborhood ATM stems from the massive deregulation instigated by Billy, particularly the repeal of the Glass-Steagall act enacted to protect us from another boom-bust Depression. Wall St guys are like crack dealers, and Bill Clinton removed the police. For the past decade, they have been wheeling and dealing to the tune of $trillions, a lot of it stashed away as their fees and bonuses, the crack they delt to American and international investors cut with lethal strychnine. Their sole goal in life is to make as much as possible and then scram to their safe haven in the Carribbean. Bill signed away any protection we had, Wall St created massive debt out of thin air, and you and I will pay for it in a much devalued Dollar. When you start paying $20, $50, for gas in the not too distant future, remember to say "Thanks Bill!"

Hillary raked in big $$$$ as a corporate lawyer and now Chelsea works for one of the crack, I mean, hedge funds on Wall St. This family is about as enamored of money and power as the Bushes. Both Clintons are pathological liars, they lie with an ease which has alarmed even ordinary politicians, they lie even when it isn't necessary, like getting sniped at in Bosnia. McCain's not much better. I'm not going to foot the bill for the current $1 trillion Iraq war debt. The country has fallen apart and some of you want to stay in Iraq for 100 yrs???!!! You think the Iraqis would let us have their oil without a fight???? Whomever wants to bomb Iran can pay for it with his/her own money too!!! The only sane person with integrity and actual grassroot experience and sincerity to perform a public service is Obama.

Why does the media dance around what appears to obvious in the current campaign strategy?
My yard man is a Black democrat who supports Barack and he explained it to me. Hillary Clinton is running for President in the 2012 election. She is staying in the race until the very end to disrupt the Democratic vote and help John McClain win the election. Even Bill Clinton is praising John McClain today to help boost his election. Because of his age, McClain will be a one term President. Hillary will rerun in 2012 on the premise Barack has proven to be unelectable from his loss in 2008. Hillary will sweep the nomination and election in 2012.
Hillary has been running for President for decades. She is willing to wait four more years to fulfill her ambition.

Where are the true Americans? I certainly do not see them in these comments. Or maybe I do see a few but they're few and far between. The fighting within the Democratic party will surely get McCain elected. You can cut and paste the talking points for your candidate all you want but in the end the result will be the choice of the corporate media. You are all feeding right into their agenda.

tomdavie and DWC, thank you! And well said.

bn, what corporate media? CNN, MSNBC, FOX, who? Who believes them anymore? We know their agenda, and it is Obama. Don't worry. They will probably try to crush McCain just as they have tried with Clinton, that is if Obama is the nominee. Now, what if the nominee is Clinton, what is their strategy? More of the same. I think the "true Americans" do not believe them anymore.

Bills problem is that he has forgotten about the right kind of politics he used to practice. Hilliary's problem is Bill. McCain's problem is his love of military industrial complex. Our problem is them. In a country with so many brilliant people to choose from for president, how did we wind up in this mess?
Posted by: EJLima | Mar 29, 2008 2:56:05 PM
Bill Clinton is an embarrassment to the Democratic party. He and Her Majesty Hillary Clinton are destroying the party because Hillary has lost the Primary.
Of course, Bill does not feel the Democratic party is being divided and destroyed by the disingenuous politics of the Hillary Campaign. Bill and Hillary are the people who are dividing the party with their poisonous politics.

All these comments about Hillary hurting the party is bull. Just so Obama's supporters understand what is real, I'll give it to you in 3 easy lessons.
1. We support Hillary not because we are loyal Democrats. Party loyalty has nothing to do with this. As far as we are concerned the Democratic Part has been hijacked by the Obama folks. So don't preach party loyalty to us anymore. We support Hillary because we like what she stands for, her policies, her work in the past, and her spirit. Ok, we like HER!
2. We DO NOT like Obama. We don't like anything about him. We don't trust him. We don't want him to be our President. We have no intentions on voting for him in any way, shape, or form.
3. We LIKE John McCain as an alternative to Barack Obama. We know McCain, we trust McCain, he is a moderate, and he has a whole lot of respect for his years as a POW and his common sense approach to global warming, calling Bush on the carpet for mismanaging the war, etc. Believe it or not, Roe vs. Wade does not take precedence in our lives over everything else. We don't agree with McCain on all the issues. For the record, McCain is pro life, but he has stated that the right to choose an abortion is a STATE's right, not a federal one. Its up to the states to decide, not the US Supreme Court. The question for most of us who say we are going to vote McCain over Obama, is who do we trust with our country more, Barack Obama, or John McCain. The answer is John McCain. All the arguing in the world is not going to change our minds, all the bullying pulpits on destroying the party and all the sermons on party unity, is not going to change our minds. Where Obama is concerned, nothing is going to change our minds. We dislike him, and we mistrust him, that much. And that is a fact.
