Durbin 'Misspoke' Doing Obama Damage Control
March 17, 2008 8:08 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis and Jacqueline Klingebiel report: Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., sought to downplay controversial statements made by Sen. Barack Obama's, D-Ill., controversial former pastor of 20 years, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, on Monday by incorrectly claiming that many of the incendiary remarks were made before Obama joined Wright's church.
“I can say, No. 1, many of the quotes that had been disclosed publicly were made by Rev. Wright at a time before Barack Obama became a part of his congregation and in places where Barack Obama was not even present," said Durbin on an Obama campaign conference call with reporters.
Durbin made his claim, even though some of Wright's most controversial statements -- such as his contention that the United States is to blame for 9/11, as well as his "God damn America" sermon -- were made a decade or more after Obama had joined his church.
Obama first heard Wright speak in 1987 and joined his Chicago South Side church, Trinity United Church of Christ, in 1991.
"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America,'" said Wright in 2003. "No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people.
"God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human," he added. "God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme."
As previously reported by ABC News' Brian Ross, in addition to damning America, Wright told his congregation on the Sunday after Sept. 11, 2001, that the United States had brought on al Qaeda's attacks because of its own terrorism. To watch Ross' report and read his story, click here.
"We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye," Wright said in a sermon on Sept. 16, 2001.
Asked to explain Durbin's claim that "many" of Wright's incendiary remarks were made before Obama joined his congregation, Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor told ABC News, "Sen. Durbin misspoke."
On Tuesday in Philadelphia, Obama is set to deliver what his campaign is calling "a major address" on race and politics.

"What is Barack Obama lying about? "
I smell a witchhunt.
So this is Land of the Free?
McCarthyism at its best.
And you, sir, have no decency.

MLK said it best:
"Don't let anybody make you think God chose America as his divine messianic force to be a sort of policeman of the whole world. God has a way of standing before the nations with justice and it seems I can hear God saying to America "you are too arrogant, and if you don't change your ways, I will rise up and break the backbone of your power, and I will place it in the hands of a nation that doesn't even know my name. Be still and know that I'm God. Men will beat their swords into plowshafts and their spears into pruning hooks, and nations shall not rise up against nations, neither shall they study war anymore." I don't know about you, I ain't going to study war anymore."

Clinton Surrogate Nina Lowry say to Timmeh on MTP on Sunday:
"Now, you and I know that no one since 1960 has won the presidency without winning Iowa. We know you have to win Iowa, we have to win............. There are key states that are critical to getting the number of votes in the electoral college."
I wonder what's the "damage control" on this?
Looks like Clinton's Chief Sunday Morning Surrogate has endorsed......Mr. O.

Iowa is the key to the Presidency.
Clinton spokeswoman has said so herself.
But I seem to remember that Clinton did not win Iowa. Something seems wrongs here....I wonder what it could be.
Puleeeze don't tell me she misspoke.

Yeah, James, did you happen to pick up on the different level of classiness to the speeches? Well let's see a simple example...Did you notice that Jerry Springer and Bill Moyers deal with social issues?

I can't understand people who think it is okay for any preacher to preach hate and anti-American sermons. I also can't see me voting for a person who has sat every Sunday in that church and listened to this hate spewing person. Obama said that Rev. Wright was his dearest friend, mentor, pastor, advisor, etc. He's welcome to the Rev. but I don't think the America needs a president who admires a person who hates all races except black and hates America. I'm sure in order for Obama to have any thing in common with with mentor he must have expressed the sentiments to his pastor. We need a president for all the people. We need a first lady who has always loved America and is proud to be an American. All you dreamy eyed people who think it is okay for this Preacher to preach hate America and hate for all the people except his own race, need to join Rev. Wright and his church along with Obama. Obama needs to resign. He has split the party and he will never win. If he wins, we will have another 4 years of the do nothing Republicans except push and talk about Iraq. The Republicans have more than this on him.

griffin, you are so right. there is NOTHING he can say to undo the reality of his 20 year close relationship, support, and praise for wright. i will not waste my time listening to more lies. and i will certainly not listen to the liars on msnbc or cnn try to spin his lies into gold - i've had them on permanent and total boycott for a month now.
totally agree that he's just trying to save his campaign. may or may not work for the nomination, although i doubt it. will NOT work for the general, so bye bye obama. couldn't happen to a more deserving typical political hack.

He is following instructions from Donna Brazile verbatim by having the speech and she claims to be an uncommitted SD? She defended Wright as well by sayin he was one of the more moderate black pastors and a respectable man she knows personally.

Obama's speech is happening because of one thing only - the truth about his pastor and his church, the truth that Obama has been trying to suppress since before the campaign started, has been exposed. Thankfully, some real reporting has started and his free pass days are over. His speech, just as his panicked rush of interviews last Friday, is a reaction to his attempt to keep the ugly racist and anti-American underbelly of people who he has been extremely close to for over 20 years (8,000 church members go a long way in a state senatorial district election) under wraps has failed.
It's the result of
Obama's own very poor judgment.
If the speech was so important, why did it take days of playing his pastor's hateful rants on TV to get him to give it? It's political desperation as he sees his image begin to crumble as he finds himself running against two strong candidates who never give up and are unwavering in their love for country and disdain for racism. His candidacy is based on transcending these race issues and on being different and transparent. Yet he has attempted to hide this from us and has (badly) attempted to brush it away as and then to talk his way out of it. He's failed us and himself at every turn.
He's just another highly ambitious politician who's quite good at reading a scripted speech. No doubt, some adoring admirers will be bamboozled by yet another speech from the speech candidate.
Let's see him answer questions.

do we really want a president that defends someone that not only preaches hate but also revisionist history.i just heard another sermon where wright said that we staged pearl harbor so we could attack japan! and you followers of obama think this is about race, horse puckey, its about in my belief that wright is just a america hater and that obama for all of his fine words might be also.birds of a feather DO flock together,we CANNOT and MUST not take this chance with this snake oil salesman at this point in time.let him serve another 8 years in the senate and show us by his actions that he does truly love this country like he says.but not the presidency not NOW.

Only those who benefit from the present racial injustices would gladly declare it does not exist.
The playing field is not level for all.
Obama has maintained he does not approve of what his pastor said.I believe him.
It is illogical to ask anyone to live his place of worship because he does not ALWAYS approve of the sermons of his pastor.
HAVE ALL CATHOLICS abandoned their church in America because the clerical hierachy in America deliberately looked the other way while thousands of AMERICAN CHILDREN WERE BEING ABUSED BY SOME PRIESTS?
Obama is in no way responsible or guilty of the utterances of pastor Wright just as I am not, of the sins of some of my catholic priests. I have remained Catholic inspite of the human failings of some of its clergy.
The body of Christ is a body of sinners for only the sick seeks the physician as stated by CHRIST HIMSELF.
I urge my fellow citizens not to, allow this well orchestrated faning and politicising of an unfortunate sermon, distract us from the goal of our Founding Fathers...... making America the land of freedom, equality under the law, and prosperity for all.
