Huckabee: No Plan for 'What Ifs'
March 03, 2008 11:59 AM
ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee began his final push in Texas this morning ahead of tomorrow's primaries. In front of a small but vocal crowd at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Huckabee stuck to his stump and took a few questions from the crowd; something he has done very seldom since campaigning in Iowa where such interaction was commonplace at his rallies.
After taking issue questions from the crowd, the governor met with reporters as he does several times a day. Asked about the very real possibility that Tuesday night would see his political rival Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., obtain the necessary 1191 delegates needed to secure the Republican nomination Huckabee didn't back down, "Well we're not anticipating that happening Tuesday night, so we don't have a plan in place for the 'what ifs' of being there tomorrow night. So we'll look at all the options....I think this idea that everything has to happen today is nonsense, utter nonsense...People have only been voting seven weeks and we're six months from convention."
But Huckabee still stands by his pledge to bow out if McCain does hit the needed mark but pointed out the semantics of pledged versus unpledged delegates, "If somebody gets 1191 delegates then we have to assume – again pledged delegates – and that's where there's a little bit of issue as to how many delegates we each have – how many of them are truly pledged delegates. But once that's determined then we're gonna recognize that the nomination has been essentially clinched."
Is Huckabee resigned to the fact that he won't be the nominee? He alluded to that near certainty and backed the GOP, saying "Now that doesn't mean that we just disappear and go away and not continue a message. We're gonna make sure our nominee wins" adding quickly, "I hope it's me...Either way, I'll be campaigning. I'll be campaigning either for myself or for the nominee, because I certainly want the Republican principles to prevail in November."
Huckabee once again addressed the lack of a debate with Senator John McCain who spent the better part of his weekend down and spent some time barbecuing Sunday, "I think his time would have been better spent at a debate and I think the people of Texas should take that into consideration when they vote either today or tomorrow, they ought to think about, you know, what would be a better use of his time, being in Texas having a debate on issues that affect Texans or serving BBQ to the media?".
Willing to go head-to-head with McCain on any topic, Huckabee was quick to point out the quality of his own barbecue too, "I would put my ribs to the test of anybody's they're pretty darn good."

Gov Huckabee is just staying in too get more delegates then Romney. What that has to do with anything is beyond me. Also, I guess he is trying to increase his speaking fees. Note the amount of comments to this article. Why the MSM even bothers with him is mystery.

homjett - Huckabee claimed a few weeks ago he was staying in to give conservatives voice. Romney was the conservative favorite prior to suspending his campaign. Perhaps he is trying to prove he has more support from conservatives so that he can compete for the veep slot?

Huckabee is not going for veep slot, he is running to try and uphold a democracy we used to love. Front runners agenda's are implementing a democracy derived from UK that is the reason America was founded, break away from that type of communism. Huckabee knows this country, as we know it, is in grave danger founded by the American people who have been muscled out of balance. Period.

So, Huckabee is running so the United States doesn't become a constitutional monarchy where the United States doesn't have representation in the legislature? Now it makes sense!

my bbq ribs would destroy mccain and huckabee in a delegate race.
and i'm from new england!

it is laughable when Huck says he is willing to go head-to-head with mccain on any topic. Huck never went after mccain at ANY time in the primaries. Why is now any different.
Also, Huck sold his soul to mccain for the WV delegates.

The conservatives in Ohio have failed themselves and they have failed the nation. Juan McCain told them their jobs would not come back and the drones have voted for him anyway.

It looks like the John Hagee endorsement has added just enough slime to the campaign wheels for Juan McCain to slide into the nomination.
