Limbaugh Caller Says Obama Reminds Daughter of Cartoon Monkey

March 03, 2008 5:54 PM

ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh issued an on-air apology to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., today after a caller said her daughter thought the Democratic presidential frontrunner looked like the cartoon character Curious George, a monkey.

Limbaugh, who laughed at the caller's comments, later apologized explaining he didn't know anything about Curious George.

"I've got to do something here to open this hour of today's excursion into broadcast excellence. I need to apologize to both Sen. Obama and to Sen. McCain, " said Limbaugh. "I had never heard of Curious George. Only now have staffers sent me little pictures of Curious George," he continued.

"So I wish to apologize to both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain. It was not my intent to bring dishonor and guttural utterances into this campaign. It happened. I laughed about it. It was a 12 year old kid's reaction to Obama, it was told by his mother. I was laughing because I was being polite, but I had never heard of Curious George."

Right before the show went into a commercial break, a caller named Tammy told Limbaugh, "..my 12 year old daughter..she..her statement last week was 'who cares what the guy's middle name is, he looks like Curious George.'"

In familiar Limbaugh fashion, he tried to find humor in the matter. "We have fired the caller Tammy. We're not going to put up with this. We're not going to tolerate this kind of stuff on this program...."

He continued, "Well, Why aren't you apologizing to Hillary? Well, she's probably happy it happened." Not missing a beat, Limbaugh quickly said, "Well, I guess I better apologize for saying that."

Limbaugh made a broader, perhaps more serious observation about political correctness and what can and cannot be said about a black man seeking the presidency of the United States. "I'm doing this as an illustration for you of how really uptight and tense everybody is going to be with any kind of criticism of Barack Obama on the Republican side," he said. "If Obama is the nominee, we may set a record for the number of apologies to him and his campaign by various Republicans and so forth."

There has been much discussion about whether the media is more aggressive with Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and a bit more polite and careful in dealing with Obama, which is what Limbaugh was alluding to today. But forty years removed from racist archetypes like Blackface, Limbaugh probably won't get much sympathy by laughing at a child thinking a black man favors a monkey.

Disgusting, disrespectful disclosure by Limbaugh. He should not condone his daughter's disrespect and should not perpetuate it. He should reject and denounce.

Posted by: DCVoter | Mar 3, 2008 6:06:30 PM

(his) meaning the caller's daughter's disrespect should not have been aired or condoned.

Posted by: DCVoter | Mar 3, 2008 6:08:10 PM

Well, I see the right-wingers are out and about today! Too bad McCain and your other conservative favorites are losers!

I always thought Dubya was the consumate monkey!!

The mom and her daughter should be really careful. They should know better about the curse of the Muslim. Wake up people!!!

Posted by: Very Independent | Mar 3, 2008 6:30:05 PM

ABC didn't represent what really happened. The caller said her daughter thought Obama looked like Curious George - no offense should be taken - it was a childs view. In addition, Limbaugh didn't know who Curious George was so, no, he wasn't laughing that she said he looked like a monkey because she didn't say he looked like a monkey, she said he looked like Curious George. While the callers comment was not a nice thing to say, and I don't condone it, Limbaugh wasn't condoning it either and ABC finished off that article as if he was. Get the story straight.

Posted by: tr bass | Mar 3, 2008 6:44:02 PM

He may as well be Curious George since he is ashamed of his full name, Brack "HUSEIN" Obama. What else is he ashamed of? Have you ever heard him recite the Pledge of Allegiance without having to read it for TV coverage? What is his specific position on Slavery Reparations? (will he & his wife get a kick back?) Mr "HUSEIN" and his team are bigger "SPIN DOCTORS" than the show spin doctors. What else is he hiding?

Posted by: Mr Osgood | Mar 3, 2008 6:46:02 PM

oh please, the caller was an adult who knew that curious george was a monkey, and thought a great place to spew such racism would be on rush limbaughs show... and she was right... it was not an innocent comment made by a child

Posted by: earthisnotflat | Mar 3, 2008 6:49:41 PM

Why is this man still on the air??? Why is ABC perpetuating this mess???

When you think the conservatives can't crawl lower they always surprise you by being able to get further into the mud and ooze. God what slime these people are..........

Posted by: JR | Mar 3, 2008 6:55:17 PM

Rush or his producer can easily block or "bleep" callers who go over the line in that he's on a delay. He could have repudiated this woman's remark and that would have been that. He didn't. THANK YOU RUSH. You just elected President Obama! Thank you.

Disgusting --
Boy, they really do want to run against Hillary, don't they???
They (the imaginary they we all know)are probably the ones donating to her campaign -- wouldn't put it past Rove for that one.
Don't think it's going to work this time though!! Enough is Enough is Enough is Enough!!!!

You know, I'm so tied of inviduals still today, can't get use to s smart black person (man or woman). Where is it that the world still think that the only person can run for anything has to be white person, what's wrong with you people? Get over it and stop trying to keep a black person/man/woman down. We've had white men all of our lives as a President, that's all we know and all we have seen, so what's wrong with a black man running for office, he was created by God, too. Do all these nasty white people, who continues to make nasty comments in 2008 think that they were the only one made as humans on this earth? We are all humans and we all have a right to any place and/or office on the earth, get over yourselves.

this is just too sick. It is only a shame that it is happening in the so called land of the free, and this in 2008. too bad.

While I think the whole thing is fishy and disgusting, it does not change my vote for Clinton. Feeling empathy for being disrespected wont make me vote for him.

Posted by: DCVoter | Mar 3, 2008 7:16:58 PM

It has been proven that most of Rush's calls are planned and planted in advance. This was something he wanted out there but could not say himself. What better way than to have a mother give hearsay of a child's statement of racism?

It is just like the Drudge photo. The right-wingers can blame someone else, but now it is out there.

I am Rush's age and I have known of curious George since childhood. I would never trust a man who hadn't heard of Curious George.

Whether it was Limbo or his caller, it is indicative of the atmosphere on his show.

Posted by: johnny lawless | Mar 3, 2008 7:19:42 PM

I've always viewed R. Limbaugh as a radio entertainer with a comedy show. He has never failed to make me laugh... Either w/his oxycontin or his America held hostage. I think Daniel Segretti makes the decisions on the 7 second on air delay.

Posted by: hl | Mar 3, 2008 7:27:58 PM

Blaming Senator Clinton for this is way far off base and desparate.

Posted by: DCVoter | Mar 3, 2008 7:29:39 PM

I am a democrat and dems have long made fun of George Bush comparing him to curious george. It seems disingenous for us to get upset about the Obama comparison.

Posted by: bjorn | Mar 3, 2008 7:36:43 PM

I agree with DCVoter and others with the same perspective. Blaming Senator Clinton is far off base. One wrong doesn't right another.

Posted by: Jennifer | Mar 3, 2008 7:38:53 PM

I agree with Johnny Lawless. Does anybody really believe that Rush doesn't know who Curious George is? That's pretty far fetched. I don't want to blow this out of proportion, but it would have been much more palatable for Rush to just say "in retrospect, I shouldn't have laughed. I'm sorry."

Posted by: Dan | Mar 3, 2008 7:42:19 PM

Actually I think he looks like George Bush.

Posted by: s.b. | Mar 3, 2008 7:46:33 PM

Obama supporters should be ashamed dragging Hillary into this.

But then again, that's what they do...they take the only successful Democratic President in modern times, and demonize him along with his wife, insinuates they're racists with a "leaked 4 point memo" about comments that are clearly not racist pulled from the twisted media...and pile on Hillary.

DISGUSTING.

Oh, and Obama supporters, as far as Hillary being "divisive" you apparently haven't seen or are ignoring Obama's "negatives."
46% and 43% aren't that far apart..his are rising, while Hillary's are set in stone..Who's stronger against McCain? Someone we already know all about, or someone who WILL be attacked with names such as Giannoulias..don't know that name? What else don't you know, that Chicagoans already do? Shame on Dems for crapping on one of their own.

PC Police -

Obama is running against Clinton and NOT Limbaugh.

This is a free country with many radio stations. If you do not like Limbaugh then don't listen to him. It's that simple.

He has 20 million listeners EACH day - are you going to call all them idiots because of one bad caller?

BTW - Clinton would make a FAR BETTER president than Obama!!!!

You Obama groupies are just drawn to a tall and handsome young man instead of a tired looking, middle-age woman. Shame on you!

Posted by: Clinton Suppoter (NOT Obama Groupie) | Mar 3, 2008 7:47:57 PM

I think the point of the story is show just how the media has treated their reporting about Obama the same way the Bush Administration used the "patriotism" thing with the war ... if you criticized the war you were automatically unpatriotic ... if you criticize Obama or ask him the hard questions, you are a racist or you are attacking him ... what a sad state of affairs.

Posted by: Jackson | Mar 3, 2008 7:52:28 PM

This Is Disgusting! How anyone on here can Connect Hillary to this is Pitiful... Anything to Make Hillary look bad! You Obama Folks Make Me Sick... Rush is a PIG and needs to be Put away For a Very long Time... He needs Redemption.

Posted by: Reflective | Mar 3, 2008 7:52:49 PM

I find it hard to believe that Limbaugh has never heard of Curious George or seen one of those books.

"If Obama is the nominee, we may set a record for the number of apologies to him and his campaign by various Republicans and so forth."

You guys would not have to apologize if you didn't always make some hateful racist remarks.

Posted by: Shawn | Mar 3, 2008 7:53:09 PM

Limbaugh sounds like he's heavily back in to his Oxycontin again. Sad, really. Does he EVER look in the mirror??

Posted by: Janet in Texas | Mar 3, 2008 7:54:53 PM

Rush Limbaugh, the druggie, is a very ignorant and bigoted man. And of course you know he's lying when he says he didn't know who Curious George was. If he didn't know, then why was he laughing? I have never listened to this idiot's show, but based on what I hear about him, he must be a VERY unhappy and unfulfilled person. He seems to hate everybody!

Posted by: Misspp | Mar 3, 2008 7:55:11 PM

Lets all remember someone at ABC News decided this story needed to be published to the American public, I wonder who that person is.

Posted by: J Wilson | Mar 3, 2008 7:56:28 PM

I don't trust anything the likes of RUSH LIMBAUGH has to say. He, like many of the other conservatives, want you to believe that McCain is NOT conservative enough and will be easy fodder for the democratic candidate. Its a strategy! If he and Ann Coulter are saying to vote for Clinton in the primary it is precisely to get you to believe that they think OBAMA is the stronger candidate. These guys want a McCain versus Obama general election cause that's the best way to carry forth a republican WINNING strategy. For them its a means to an end.
The disparaging comment about OBAMA is more proof.

I say don't listen to this guy and vote your conscious. Let honest votes decide our elections!!!!

I'm happy Obama has done as well as he has and hope he get's the Democratic nod. I'm sad however that we'll have to go backwards and revisit some very ugly sentiments in American history as the racists come out of the woodwork to attack (literally and perhaps, before it is all over, figuratively) Mr. Obama.

Posted by: frankiestage | Mar 3, 2008 8:04:34 PM

I am an Obama supporter. I don't find the commment that the Senator and Curious George look a bit similar as offensive. Can't speak for the Senator, but he has two delightful daughters aged 6 and 9 and they probably find the comparison funny. You see children for the most part are innocent and find things humorous. The problem is when adults try to insult each other using the cover of children.
Now the Senator is skinny; has long limbs; and prominent ears. He says so himself. I have a Curious George doll on my daughter's bed and he is skinny, has long limbs and prominent ears. I find both the Senator and the doll both to be quite cute...therefore, I am choosing to think this is just a funny remark and that no apology was necessary for the child's comparision. Senator Obama is a great guy that has had a lot of stuff smeared, slammed, and downright made up about him in this campaign. I am sure he expected it. So being compared to a cute monkey is probably not registering on his "insulto-meter".

Disclaimer: Rush Limbaugh is not someone I make a habit of defending, so don't expect me to do much of that. I am sure his motives were not so pure, but if he prefers me to chalk up his laughter etc. to ignorance, I am quite happy to accomodate him in that defense and I do so on every occasion possible.

I get tired of the PC tripe the liberals have pushed on the country to censor our speech, if people don't like what they hear, change the channel.

Curious George is a cartoon character that illicits human behaviors. Just because all of you are so ashamed of racism, doesn't mean others should go around watching what they say all the time.

To be honest, anyone who sides strictly Republican or Democrat is an idiot in my point of view. Learn to side with issues, not parties.

Posted by: Jay | Mar 3, 2008 8:10:23 PM

Sick People. This is after hearing many comments from the talk show. They will allow for people to comment who they doesn't like and apologize. If you call to make more comments or corrections they will say the political show is shutdown and start talking about the first job. Scums.

Posted by: Jay | Mar 3, 2008 8:10:28 PM

So its OKAY to Compare George Bush to Monkeys and idiots alike for 7 plus years, then some compares Obama to a Monkey and its racism. Well then call this African American (yes me) a racist, since he does look like Curious George. Just like Bill Clinton looks like Mr. Potato Head along with Ted kennedy.

I heard Limbaugh's caller live. The potential racial overtone did not even occur to me until Rush apoligized. My kids love Curious George, and I immediately understood the child's impression. I never understood the racial assocation of blacks with monkeys. Doesn't evolution suggest a common ancestor for blacks, whites, and apes? Anyway, Obama's short hair and prominent ears do remind me of the loveable carton character. Of course, Ross Perot reminded me of Dumbo, too.

These kind of blogs are exactly why the democratic party is so divided. Most of you will take one little piece of information and say it is fact while the rest of you will say it is twisted. Don't you know you are all so very ignorant. America should be ashamed of all of you. Obama and Clinton are very similar but Clinton has already had 8 years in the White House. Did she get healthcare for all Americans then. No. So why should we give her another 4 years to try.

Curious George has been in print over 50 years. Gimme a break!

Why was Limbo laughing if he didn't know the reference?

What a crock. I agree with Johnny Lawless, this was a planted call by right wing nutcakes just like the Drudge photo. They get it out there but claim someone else did it.

Posted by: BJ@GAYGOP | Mar 3, 2008 8:19:13 PM

William F. Buckley passed away recently, and I read an article about what a class act he was. He could argue his conservative views without resorting to base comments toward his opponents. In fact, he had various liberal friends. Whatever happened to civilized discourse? A lot of people offended by this incident want to cast all conservatives as tolerant of such nonsense, but I believe a lot of conservatives would never associate with Limbaugh's poor attempt at garnering higher ratings.

Rush owns his own network. He can say what he wants. Who is going to punish a 12 year old? I wouldn't punish mine. If this little girl sees him as Curious George who cares. It is not the end of the world. And Rush should know better than refer to Obama as black when he is Mulatto and never will be all black. But I think he wants to be black. I want to be rich too but its not going to happen. Obama is too sure of himself and he has a high ego. As a crooked attorney with a crooked client he really has the nerve to run for the presidency of this country. He has a smeared background and associated with Rezko, Farrakhan and Ayers. All crooks.

By the way, the photo montage is in poor taste. Or are you just tryig to deflect some real criticism away from Senator Obama today, when the press has finally decided to do its job with this non story.

By the way, children love Curious George, and as a science teacher, I can tell you all humans look like monkeys. Just flip though a National Gfeographic some day.

Non Story, so don't make a story out of it.

How about the fact that Obama refused to answer reporters wuestion today in a media scrum about Rezco fundraisers or The NAFTA memo at the Canadian consulate.

I used to listen to Rush as if it were a comedy show, a parody and a joke. But the level of hate spewing from him and his ilk is no-longer funny, not the slightest bit informative and hardly a fair balanced perspective. His fear-mongering drivel has lost any possible humerous aspect and I will no-longer listen to his hateful message. Yeah, I went back to NPR and its willingness to broadcast people of many perspectives and beliefs without any racist, hate spewing, fear-mongering slant.

I think Rush Limbaugh have some to hide, like a couple of skeletons in his closet, and he's trying to reflect his bad mind and ways on to other people. How can an adult don't know what curious George is. Many people like him make excuses after spewing out their racist behaviors. Rush stop making excuses and apologies after you intensionally laughed at another person, you are an adult and should act like one. How could you not know that the caller was referring Obama to a monkey, that is pure ignorance, and what better place to act stupid than on the Rush Limbaugh show, because who knows Rush could be hiding some dark secret about himself.Rush is one stupid, ignorant fat guy.

Strange McNabb was able to take his team to the Superbowl, he didn't win but he got there. Rush has been spewing his racist views for too long.

Who do people think will be more offended by this, Obama's or Hillary's supporters? When supporters get angry they come out to vote. Good old Rush sees that Obama needs some help so he ran with this. Republicans want to run against Obama, not Hillary.

1) It's hilarious how the main stream media listens to Rush and treats everything he says (or doesn't say) on his show as newsworthy. They're falling into his trap and they don't even know it!

2) It's downright scary how many "Americans" have left comments on this site calling for Rush to be silenced because of a caller's remark on his show. What happened to free speech? You people are frickin' scary! It's no wonder that the dems can hardly ever win a general election.

3) If Obama becomes president, I will respect him like all sitting presidents deserve to be respected. Many dems obviously never learned that civics lesson. They throw a hissy fit about this non-story, but have no problem calling our sitting president a monkey. The irony is so delicious!!!

I was listening to the sow live. Before you comment on this listen to it. She says that her daughter said "Who cares what his middle name is, because he looks like curious George." Even if that IS true she is blatantly relaying the racist statement of her daughter. But Rush laughs, THEN SAYS HE SHOULDN'T!!!! Why would you say you shouldn't laugh at something if you don't know what's being said???!?!?!?!?!?

I listened to Rush Limbaugh's program live today and am astonished that ABC sees this as a relevant news story. Rush did not know who Curious George was and immediately apologized when he found out. No common sense person would have been offended if they actually listened to what happened, and anyone that is upset about this was just looking for any way they could speak out against the most popular radio host in the world.

Oh I see, Rush's 1st Amendment rights don't count to you lefties. You want to silence him. You people are really pathetic. I fight for your right to speak the venom you have been spewing for the last seven years, and that is fine, you have that right. Now you want people you hate to not have the right to free speech. Amazing. But only in a liberal world....

what rock has rush been living under in america not to know who curious george is. anyway, we shouldnt blow it way out of proportion. that looks bad. the parent probably put the idea in the kids head and then relayed it to rush thinking it was all that.
it is nothing unless the obama people make it uglier by blowing it up. we are going to see more of this when obama goes up against mccain.
i know obama can deal with it, and i hope his supporters can. rise above, folks. that is the only way. set a good example for the ignoramuses-ignorami? in the world

What concerns me is the negative comments about how we must look to the world. Obviously, many of you only listen to American Media. You have never been anywhere. Wishing we were more peace-loving like the Europeans, Indians, or Chinese.

The problem is: THAT WE ARE GETTING MORE LIKE THEM EACH DAY!

I was reading a blog in India in 2004 where they were attacking US policy in Iraq. Then they switched to REJOICE over a recent bombing of a train that burned to death Men, Women and Children in revenge for a recent Muslim attack.

So stop worrying about how the rest of the world feels about us (they are no better or worse) and rejoice in the fact that a wonderful document, The Constitution, holds us together, in peace, at home!
