McCain Cites Bin Laden on Iraq's Importance
March 24, 2008 8:51 PM
CHULA VISTA, CALIF -
ABC News's Bret Hovell Reports: John McCain returned to the campaign trail from his weeklong trip to Europe and the Middle East Monday talking about successes in Iraq, and the need to stay the course there.
He cited the recent release of a tape by Osama bin Laden as proof that Iraq is the central front in the war on terrorism. That’s a contention McCain, R-Ariz., has been making for weeks on the stump, often quoting General David Petraeus, the leader of multinational forces in Iraq, who has expressed the same view.
"General Petraeus and I and Osama bin Laden are in agreement," McCain said speaking with reporters after a town hall-style meeting at a VFW post a few miles south of San Diego.
"It is hard to understand why Senator Clinton and Senator Obama do not understand that," McCain continued. "I don't know if it is naiveté or what the problem is, but it's obvious that they are dead wrong and they are wrong when they say we should leave Iraq immediately."
McCain's remarks come on his first day campaigning since an overseas trip which took him to Iraq, Jordan, Israel, the United Kingdom and France. McCain, the Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting, reiterated repeatedly that he took the trip in his role as the ranking member of the Senate armed services committee, but there is no question that what he saw in Iraq is directly tied to his fortunes as a presidential candidate.
"The surge is succeeding and it's time that [the Democrats] acknowledged that the surge is succeeding," McCain said Monday. "The benefits of success in Iraq will spread through the Middle East, including a stable society, a stable government, a bastion of Democracy, flawed but functioning."

Bin Laden is a hologram. Have you noticed that these tapes keep popping up when the administration is trying to change the subject from whatever backlash or scrutiny they're getting after the latest crime they've committed regrettably becomes public. Tell me how in the hell John Miller at ABC, and Morgan Spurlock from "Supersize Me" could find him, but NOT the CIA. Wake the heck up. This war on terror is a convienient excuse to loot the country, occupy foriegn lands, and expand corporate power overseas on the back of the American taxpayer, and at great cost of American blood and treasure. Until we demand an end to this madness, we will reap what we sow. I hope your bank account and the lives of your children are worth it.

While I do not agree with McCain, the distinction on "the surge" working is important. The goal of the surge as proposed by Bush and as voted on by Congress was to provide security and time for the Iraqi government to establish their government and transition control of their country to them. Part of the surge is working as planned and expected - we gave them greater security and time. Clinton agrees with that part. The part that is not working is the Iraqi government not taking control and the excuses are many. This is where the candidates diverge on approach. Two things that are important is that we elect a President that has the necesary understanding and support of military activities to get the job done. This means both military support and foreign relations experience. Clinton and McCain both have a fair share on that. So let's talk about Obama's:
Foreign Policy Credential #1: “Life Of Living Overseas” For 4 Years…In Elementary School
Foreign Policy Credential #2: Took Some College Courses In International Relations
Foreign Policy Credential #3: Has Passed Only One Bill As A Senator…It Dealt With A Foreign Country
In The 110th Congress, Obama Is The Lead Sponsor On 55 Bills. None of those have passed.
In The 109th Congress, Obama Was Lead Sponsor On 61 Bills. Only One Of These (1.6%) Has Passed The Senate (The Bill Went On To Become Law). S. 2125, a bill to “promote relief, security, and democracy in the Democratic Republic of Congo” became law in December 2006. (S. 2125, Became Law 12/22/06)
Foreign Policy Credential Number #4: Already Developed A Relationship With Australia’s Prime Minister; Now Ready To Meet With State Sponsors Of Terror.
Foreign Policy Credential #5: Member Of Foreign Relations Committee…Reluctantly. “Listening To A Bloviating Colleague At His First Meeting Of The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Obama Slipped A Three-Word Note To A Member Of His Staff: ‘Shoot. Me. Now.’” (Ben Wallace-Wells, “Destiny’s Child,” Rolling Stone, 2/7/07)
It appears clear to me that the Republican moderates in PA that are changing to dems so they can vote for Hillary are just as concerned about the possibility of Obama winning in case something happens to McCain is valid. While they may have McCain as 1st choice and Clinton as 2nd choice and my choices are just the opposite, it is clear that we agree Obama is a bad choice. I hope more Independents like myself ensure Clinton has the best chance to win the nomination at the convention. Otherwise, I dont think Obama has a chance in hell in Nov.

Since no WMD now Bin Laden has become the main issue for the Iraq war. McCain is trying to justify the US staying in Iraq. Bin Laden was always the problem, and 5 years the US presence in Iraq has not solved it, maybe not even 100 more years. Why should American lives be sacrificed for a civil war abroad. I think their problem is political not military is why a resolution has not been achieved.

What good are we doing if we leave Iraq. We are only showing weakness and WILL be attacked again if we retreat. We need to stay there and finish what we started. I dont think we should have rushed into the war like we did, but we did. So lets think long term here and not just rush into retreat.

The American people were lied to about the need to invade Iraq. Every time a lie was exposed the reason for the U.S. being there changed. Now 4,000 Americans have died. Our country is on the brink of financial ruin.(Let's not forget one of the contributing factors to the fall of the Soviet Union was the expense of their war in Afganistan)If you look at the deficit, lack of national health care, social security on the brink of collapse, to name just a few of the issues facing our country. Think of how much better off this country would be if the money spent in Iraq was spent on issues within our country.

So the surge worked but the corrupt Iraqi government did not. Sorry McCain but all the kings horses and all the king's men and all the peoples money won't fix Bush's mess. Face it you've been wrong every step of the way.

I have a lot of respect for John McCain. But John McCain is flat out wrong. Iraq is only the "central front in the war on terrorism" because we invaded and declared it so. When we leave in a year, 5 years, 10 years, or 100 years the "central front in the war on terrorism" will simply shift to wherever Al Qaeda chooses it be. The Iraq war was and continues to be based on a lie. The country will never be "stabilized" because the warring factions in the country have little to do with Al Qaeda and have centuries of hate and distrust for each other. To believe otherwise is living in a fantasy world....the same fantasy world that led us to invade in the first place. We should get out of this quagmire as quickly as possilble (within a year). Whatever happens in Iraq will ultimately not make a bit of difference in the war on terror.

buying off the people we were fighting is working. Getting a cease fire set up is working You put 50,000 troops down in any urban area and I can promise you that violence will be reduced. Yet, infrastructure going nowhere. Iraqi Government, corrupt and more ineffective than ever. Now the prep work for an Iranian invasion being laid. BTW the cease fire is fallign apart, the people we are paying are only mostly not shooting at us and trying to blow up our soldiers, and Osama Bin Laden wants us to stay in Iraq so we will continue to leave him entirely unharassed in Afghanistan and Pakistan. how much Halliburton stock do you own Senator?

Can McCain please explain again why we went to war in Iraq in the first place? I believe it was lies about WMD
Can anyone remember The 8year war Iraq versus Iran?
Saddam Hussain was actually doing USA a favour keeping Iran out of the picture.
Stupidity and greed of the current Whitehouse verges on treachery and murder.
McCain wants to continue the course. He is as stupid as Bush...Daddy got Bush into Yale...Daddy got McCain into the USnaval academy.

Romney has several sons, all eligible for service in Iraq. None of them are in Iraq. Knock, knock.

What else do you expect from a guy who finished 894th out of 899 at Annapolis and crashed several planes before he really learned how to fly - including one associated with a highline - could it be our boy McCain was a "hotdog" with attitude - being the son of an admiral and short of stature can do that to an underacheiver!!
Vote for someone who wasn't born with a silver spoon or foot in his mouth - that means Obama.
