McCain Travels to Europe and Middle East

ABC News' Bret Hovel Reports: The Senate office of John McCain announced Monday that the Republican nominee-in-waiting will travel overseas during the week of March 17 to Israel, Great Britain and France.

He is expected to meet with the prime ministers of Israel and Britain, and the president of France, and will be leading a Congressional delegation that includes Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-CT.

While McCain, who has sewn up the Republican nomination, is overseas, Sens. Barack Obama, D-IL, and Hillary Clinton, D-NY, will continue to battle amongst themselves for the nod of the Democratic party.

McCain aides privately admit they are looking forward to the photo opportunities with McCain and world leaders while the Democrats are fighting with one another.

But McCain said Monday the trip is not about counter-programming the Democrats.

"I travel frequently, as is well known…" McCain said. "This is just something that I do regularly. A lot continues to happen in Iraq and the Middle East. So its part of what I have been doing for many, many years as a senior member of the Senate Armed Services committee."

When McCain returns to the States he will start what the campaign is calling a "bio tour," introducing himself to the general electorate.

Interesting that the Republicans are going into election mode while the Democrats will be at each other's throats until a few weeks before the national election.

My question is: Is McCain doing his job as Senator or is he traveling to make others think he is already President? Candidates should not be campaigning with foreign governments or even speaking to foreign press about our elections.

ken - we know that the Obama campaign relied heavily on the online users as did Dean's campaign and Ron Paul's. I don't think it will mean squat come November.

I think this is an important time for Johnny Mac. He's got some time to do some house cleaning at the RNC and begin to rebrand the GOP.

He gets to do this while DCV and the obamites are pulling each others' hair out.

So things gotta be looking good. Especially with Hillary still around.

Who cares what John McCain is doing?

Yes DCVoter, McCain is doing his job just as much as Hillary Clinton is doing hers. And you can even take him at his word.

LOL Commander Guy - as you notice... my posts are not emotional so no hair being pulled out for me

If McCain keeps his discussions with foreign governments and press restricted to his job as Senator, I have no issue with the travel of course.

Note Obama hasnt been overseas to try to do any foreign relations or troop support etc. McCain and Clinton both have and I respect them for that.

Lotta good will needs to be restored overseas. McCain just doing his part.

HILLARY CLINTON and her competitor are truly dominating the news and this guy from the other party can barely get his daily naps reported. It's much more interesting to be a Democrat these days.

John McCain not only looks presidential, He acts Presidential.

LOL WestCoastMessenger - Senator Clinton's competitor and his wife are on their way down the tubes with the evidence being presented at the Rezko trial I think. Unfortunately, we have to wait and see. Perhaps the revotes in FL and MI will be after some solid evidence of impropriety shows up and the voters voices will move Clinton into the presumptive spot.

I was looking for Rezko info and could not find it on Vote Smart.

So I guess I'm puzzled about your certainty expressed here. You wouldn't be relying on the biased drive by media or anything, would you?

Posted by: The Commander Guy | Mar 11, 2008 11:25:36 AM

Commander Guy - reporting news is not in the scope of the vote smart website. Perhaps you should read more about them.

I actually agree they should not post "news" because the facts are not released yet. I dont use them as a sole source of information and neither should anyone else. But for the items they do have it is a comprehensive unbiased non-partisan source. Once the evidence is presented in the Rezko trial it becomes public information. I would like to find a good dB driven searchable source of that sort of thing. Got one?

As far as what I think about the Rezko issues, I think the voters have a right to know what the details are and tend to sift through the rhetoric as much as possible. Some things that have been presented so far that concern me are:

Rezko's defense attorney touting Rezko's long-time relationship with Obama in his opening statement.

Obama entering into a real estate transaction with Rezko AFTER knowing about the federal investigation that was launched against Rezko.

Obama lying about his relationship with Rezko (5 hours work vs. 17 year business relationship).

Obama refusing to answer new questions about the Rezko transactions.

Memos written by Obama on behalf of Rezko (which may prove to be political favors).

Obama being an active consultant in appointments to a board that may have increased Michelle's income (which is part of his).

Obama claiming he had no way of tracking funds from fundraisers held by Rezko on his behalf (which he previously denied even occurred). Inability to track those funds is certainly a poor executive skill when the media was able to find them quickly.

Obama not handling this 2 years ago when he was questioned and made aware of the Rezko sting.

Obama holding private meetings with Rezko of which we do not know what they were about yet and when they were held.

I am sure there are more details we will see presented as evidence.

With Clinton and the Hsu funds, notice she quickly identified and returned funds and denounced association. There has been no evidence of impropriety, illegal activity, or ethics violations on Clinton's part relating to Hsu.

There have and always will be attempts by unsavory characters to influence politicians. No successful politican is immune to that. The difference I see in the two situations is clear as noted above. I have always stated that if Obama vets clear of the Rezko influence, I have no problem on this issue. It doesnt change my view on which candidate is the best and that is HILLARY CLINTON.

Wolfson rightfuly listed questions that should be asked and answered. The RNC piped info out in an opposition press release last June. I actually read each release done for all the dem candidates and the Clinton release was 1 page but the Obama release was several pagess. This Rezko thing may be nothing and it may result in an indictment. Even if it doesnt, there is enough evidence coming to light to prove Obama lied and was not forthcoming about Rezko and his inexperience shows by not handling this 2 years ago and being transparent with the voters that he was not ethical.

You using the words "Wolfson" and "rightfully" back to back in the same sentence is something I've never seen before.

reaganfan - a couple of voters filing a frivolous suit is just junk.

Posted by: DCVoter | Mar 11, 2008 3:16:23 PM

if there were any merit to the allegations made by you and yours regarding Clinton and Hsu, the Rep machine would have been all over it... consider the sources LOL
