Obama Courts Richardson Endorsement
March 01, 2008 9:12 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: On Tuesday, Sen. Barack Obama received the endorsement of former presidential candidate Chris Dodd, the Connecticut senator. On the same day, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico hinted on CNN that his endorsement could be coming soon, and possibly in the next few days.
Aboard his press plane, Obama was asked by members of the press where the status that endorsement was, as both Obama and his rival Sen. Hillary Clinton have heavily courted the former presidential candidate.
Obama confirmed that he had talked to Richardson about four days ago. He said the conversation was "great."
"I told him I really like his beard, he looks great," Obama said.
Beyond that, the candidate did not give any other indicators that he’s expecting an endorsement by the governor soon, if ever. He said that he did not think that Richardson would be in Texas on Monday and Tuesday as the March 4 primary draws near.
Richardson, a former member of the in the Clinton administration, dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucus in January. He was seen watching the Super Bowl with Bill Clinton in early February.
Robert Gibbs, communicators director for Obama, confirmed that Obama has asked formally for Richardson’s endorsement, and that he talks with the governor probably once a week.
Another outstanding endorsement Obama is looking for?
John Edwards, with whom Obama met on Feb. 17, has yet to make an endorsement. Clinton also met with Edwards, 10 days before Obama did.
Gibbs said he’s not sure when the last time Edwards and Obama have spoken, but said it’s on a regular basis.

Wow finally Richardson some one younger than 70 I was wondering when all the change would be shown since most of his endorement has come from people that have been in washington since I was in eight grade and that was in 1966.

I think Richardson would be a great endorsement. I also think that Richardson would be a Great V.P. pick.
Obama 2008!

Richardson's endorsement will have the same impact as Dodd's endorsement.
I think Richardson, who was with the Clintons in the White House will endorse Hillary.
It won't make an impact.
Edwards needs to endorse someone before this race gets real ugly.

P T. I could not agree with you more he would make a GREAT VP.

I pray that Richardson endorse Obama. I am glad that chris Dodd did. Obama will make a great president. He inspires the world . We here in Nort Carolina does 99% of my friends does. We are glad that we have someone like Obama to run this country. Hope is the word. Faith, Hope, Credibilty, and Leadership. Go Obama

Bill Richardson, your endorsement would be terrific. From some of your recent comments, I would say that your aspirations are pretty much in line with Baracks.
Don't worry about the Clintons...they will be history after the Texas primary anyway.
America needs your support now. Please stand for change and a new direction for this country.

A couple weeks ago, Mr Richardson was on national media and said it would be the end of the democratic party if the uncommited super delegates did not vote for whom the people of the US wanted.
Reports are that Hillary and Bill have been calling him every day asking him not to commit until after Texas and Ohio. They know if he commits before that day, Hillary is done.

For some reason, Hillary's vote on the initial resolution bothers Obama, but he is not bothered by the "yea" votes of Kerry, Daschle, Dorgan, and Dodd, whose endorsements he holds. I can't figure that out. Are Kerry, Daschle, Dorgan, and Dodd are making a “poor” judgment again since they are endorsing Obama based on his own analogy and logics? Did Sen. Rockefeller voted “yea” too?

Gov. Richarson...I was hoping for you and Al Gore to endorse Hillary Clinton. That is your responsibility. I know you know better.. Obama is not the best qualified candidate. Do the right thing and endorse the only candidate that can make a difference immediately.

Yes, we need someone who has organized state dinners to run the country.

If Bill Richardson endorsed Obama, it could pay off big for him. I expect that he's on Obama's short list for a running mate.
I understadn that Bill Clinton watched the Superbowl with Bill Richardson, no doubt with an agenda. Bill Richardson is to worldly wise not to see through the Clintons.
My guess is that he will endorse Obama, hopefully the day before Super Tuesday II.

Bill Richardson should endorse Hillary, both have known Gov. Richardson forever. With the strong ties the Clinton's have with the Hispanic community, I expect Bill Richardson to endorse Hillary. Many Hispanics would be very upset if he endorsed Obama.

"Bill Richardson should endorse Hillary, both have known Gov. Richardson forever."
Which may turn out to be the very reason he endorses Barack Obama.

I think it would be deadly for Richardson to endorse right now with the NAFTAgate going on and Rezko trial just getting started. How can you stand behind someone who just admitted he lied to the American people.

I am guessing that Richarson will come out today to endorse Obama. The polls show that Obama will likely has Texas and will be within a few points in Ohio. Vermont will equal out RI if Hillary wins there. Hillary needed to win BIG BIG in order to get back in the race and that is not in the cards. It is time for them to get in, especially after an ugly week of ugly fear mongering by Hillary.

Hillary may have pipe dreams of pressing this to the convention but after Obama has the undoubted mathematical win of the most delegates -likley after Tuesday, the supers should step in and push it up over 2000. Doesn't matter the reason the Supers were setup - that's legacy now. Now it is to push the majority. Backroom deals are a thing of the past. Bill Richardson is right. It would be the end of the democratic party if the supers tried to nominate a person with less delegates then the other.

Vet_Sk, with the FL delegate hearings on March 17th how could you suggest for Hill to give up? Backroom deals are of the Past? Tell Obama and his aide Goolsby
Posted by: deni | Mar 2, 2008 11:31:23 AM
I think it would be unwise for the political futures of either Richardson or Edwards to endorse Obama at this point. A lot of the base of the democratic party feel they have been sold out and they will have long memories. If Obama is elected and bombs out, which is certainly a strong possibility, no amount of pretty speeches or excuses is going to help him....or them.

Richardson and Edwards have one more day to make relevant endorsements. Richardson could help seal the deal with middle-aged Hispanics in Texas. Edwards could help with labor in Ohio.
Otherwise there won't be a big shift in delegates on March 4.
The next day, however, every black elected superdelegate who wants to be reelected will declare their support for Barack Obama. That should pretty much wrap up the nomination.
It would be better for the general election if Richardson and Edwards endorse now and give Obama whatever boost they can in the primaries.
Waiting till afterwards seems almost cowardly.

If either Richarson or Edwards are going to endorse, I hope that they endorse Barack. Aside from all of the distrations of elections, when you look closely at Barack and Hillary, you really see two very different people. Barack sincerely wants to improve our country and truly make changes that will help the middle class. His healthcare plan has been widely praised at lowering costs and improving quality. He wants to expose what actually happens in our government, so that the American people can honestly see what is happening and get involved. Barack Obama seeks REAL change. Hillary would make improvements, but Barack will dramatically change the way our government operates. There are real differences between Barack and Hillary. Not to mention, Barack will win in November...Hillary might not.
