Obama: Discussion Over Wright's 'Stupid Statements' Have Been a Distraction
March 17, 2008 7:01 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told PBS' Gwen Ifill that the discussion over Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s controversial statements have been a distraction. “I would say that it has been a distraction from the core message of our campaign,” Obama said during an interview on "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer."
Obama said the storyline in the past couple days has been “dominated by some stupid statements that were made by Rev. Wright, but also caricatures of Rev. Wright and Trinity United Church of Christ –- which, by the way, is part of a denomination that is overwhelmingly white –- you know, I think that that has distracted us from the possibilities of moving beyond some of these arguments.”
Obama said that his diverse background causes him to want to bring people together through their commonalities.
“I think part of what has always been the essence of my politics, not just this campaign, but my life, is the idea that we’ve got to bring people together.
"Now, part of that is biographical, as somebody who comes from a diverse background with a white mother and an African-American father, growing up in Hawaii and Asia. You know, it’s in my DNA to believe that all of us have something fundamental in common.”
He said it would be naïve of him to think he could end up being a “quasi-frontrunner” without race being discussed, but he said, ultimately, it is not useful to discuss solely on differences.
On Wright, Obama said he’s a product of the 60s generation, and likened the generational divide to another controversial figure, Geraldine Ferraro. “His experience of race in this country is very different than mine in the same way that Geraldine’s experience being an intelligent, ambitious woman, you know, is very different than a young woman who’s coming up today and potentially has a different set of opportunities.”
Obama said his generation benefits from the past. “And that’s part of what this campaign has been about, is to say, let’s acknowledge a difficult history, but let’s move forward in a practical way to get things done.”

Here in Jena, LA. we had these young black men that were arrested because they had beat up a young white man.
It took Al and Jesse days to get 10,000 people here to protest. Where are they now? I promise you that they would be screaming the loudest if it was a white minister saying these HATEFUL, HURTFUL statements.
I don't believe it should be tolerated by anyway saying things like this!!!
He can not say anything tomorrow to excuse HIS MINISTER!!! How can saying G** D*** American be taken out of context?

What I am surprised is the fact that somebody who wants to unite people of all walks of life has been involved in a church, which has chosen a afro-centric and separatist path. Certainly, the church may have reasons for this.
If Mr. Obama is, in fact, a unifier, would one not have expected him to influence the church to forgive and move toward a more inclusive path? Would this not make a better case for him? Rather, he chose to stay and "hide" the fact that he knew the positions and statements of the pastor.
The main issue here is the integrity of this man and not the church. The church's position may be arguable, but it is asking to run the nation. Mr. Obama is. Interesting he called his opponents "hoodwinks"!
As Mr. Juan Williams correctly says, when Mr. Obama wanted to be identified as black he joined the church, and now when he wants to be identified as a uniter he wants to say that did not know about the controversial positions of the church and pastor. if he does not know about the organization that was involved in for 20 years, is he capable of managing the executive branch?
At least we know one thing. Mr. Obama may be a lesser "hoodwink" than some other politicians, but "hoodwink" nonetheless.

My hope is that Rev Wright gets "enlightened" and appologizes to all those he insulted and then makes a serious pledge to work with Barack and others to try to find a common ground and begin the healing process. Is that too much to hope for?

this hate talk from the pulpit and obama remaining in the church speaks volumes: it explains why michelle has never been proud of the usa and it explains obama's book when he writes that he has a lingering resentment for his mother's race.

Obama can't change any of this fiasco. Once again we'll have his "words" but for 20 years sitting in this hatefilled church is his "actions."
Actions speak louders than words.

Obama has lost 5-6 points already in favorability ratings. He'll continue to slide into oblivion. The superdelegates will elect Hillary to stop the bleeding.

Only a very arrogant man thinks that anything he can "say" will wipe away a close and influential 20 year relationship with a Louis Farrakhan wannabe.

The Obama campaign will try to spin this. We, as united Americans, need to tell them that we are not going to stand for it. We need to stick together and so: NO, YOU DON'T!
**No, You Don't--get a free pass.
**No, You Don't--have the right to twist the truth to your convience!
**No, You Don't--have the right to scam the American public!!

An ordained Catholic minister, I can assure you that if any homily sounded like Mr. Wright's, in my church it would be brought to the attention of the bishop and the minister's faculties to preach would be terminated.
Long ago I learned that if someone or something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
It pains me to admit that the senator from Illinois -- may not be what he pretends to be. Remember, in the end we only tell others what we want them to know about ourselves. It is our job, to discern the truth of the man.
His association and participation in this church speaks volumes...and frightens me to death.

Obama has a knack for understatement doesn't he? A distraction? I would say devastating.
He tried to say so many things that didn't stick: crazy uncle, provocative, not controversial, to incediary and rejection.
Nearly a 12-step program that started with denial, with recent comments sounding oddly insincere and disingenuous.
Here are some things that should not be said tomorrow: guilt by association/not working, Hillary's tax returns/not even close, and Dr. King. Let him be.
Michelle once said this would be our only chance to elect her husband, a sort of now or never ultimatum. Last week while at Villanova she said that we are suffering from a "deficit of empathy." (CSPAN.)
Count on hearing that tomorrow too.

I'm so tired of all of the "it's over now for Obama" posts.
Do you honestly believe Sen. Obama forgot what color his skin is? Do you think he didn't know there are still racist people in this country? Do you think he counted on "smooth sailing" to the presidency without the right wing nuts reminding everybody of the animosity that still exists out there between whites and blacks?
You might be able to say that he didn't expect this to come up in the primary, and maybe he should have taken more pro-active action about it. And maybe that would have helped a bit. I guess his fault is to trust that democrats, the party that preaches inclusion, wouldn't be as biased.
Sen. Obama didn't jump on this willy-nilly, and without being realistic. The reason Sen. Obama decided to run, why he hoped he could succeed, is because he counted on the fact that America is less divided now than in the past, and also that the votes he would have lost anyway to people who would have never (not before, not after Wright) vote a black person into office would be counteracted by the millions that will come out for a new found hope in a political process that serves the people of the country, instead of the millionaires.

Regarding Rev. Wright's comments:
How can somebody rather take the "guilt by association" stance on this, and claim Sen. Obama must be a racist and a country hater, while completely disregarding that:
* he was raised by one parent - his white mother. are you suggesting he is a racist that grew up with his white mother?
* he has been in public service for this country since he graduated from Harvard Law. every year.
If you want to know his feelings on racism, patriotism, and actually want to make an informed decision, rather than let FOX tell you what to think, please consider reading his books. they are also available on audiotape, in fact he got a Grammy for his last one.

Breaking: No revote in FL. Another major blow to Hillary. If MI has a revote Obama will probably win or tie. So how exactly is Hillary going to catch up?? The supers aren't going to overturn the elected delegate leader -- Pelosi, Dean and others will see to that.

It is so unfortunate that people in position as Pastor Wright and Senator Obama is able to preach to American about value as a human being and act otherwise. How do we face our children everday by brainwashing them as there are not turning back and using reverse discrimination as away to better our children future. Racism is a fact of lives for some, however, learn to deal with it and live in harmony is the teaching that we all should be sharing with our children. This is America, all of us Americans should honor her and do what we can to better our country and our relationships.

that is the doctrine of universal restoration. i believe that in the end, God's love is so complete and Jesus' redemptive act so perfect, that all are saved. Salvation is through Jesus but he can save anyone he wants and he wants to save everyone. That's the good news. But the anger, the hate, the sexual gyrations are not needed--they are not of God. I keep my eyes on God and not on the reverend. And I am ever watchful of charismatic figures who enthrall people--they too often are demigods. Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing.

MI Voter, Thanks for the straw poll, it is a very good indicator of how the American people are feeling. . They restart the poll every Monday and Hillary leads in all states but Illinois . she is up 58 -41% over Obama. Florida shows 67-33% in favor of Clinton, PA show 60-40% in favor of Clinton and in Michigan Hillary is ahead by 54-45 %

The Trinity church has now quietly whitewashed (pardon the pun) the church's website to take all out all references to it having a full on black agenda. Gee, are they ashamed??!! Too bad for them many websites have the old stuff on file. You guys cannot cover this up.
Obama is so over it ain't even funny.

I am still an undecided democratic voter although I have been leaning toward Obama. However after this sad episode, which he has not convincingly explained, is changing my mind. America has race problems and many Blacks are justifiably angry, but the Blacks I know complain about racism but they are still proud citizens of this country. They would never say what Wright has said and everyone of them was mad as he*l about 9/11, not grinning in glee and saying America deserved it. This may be Obama's Chicago Black world, but these radicals do not reflect the sentiments of most of America, Black or White.

Interesting how no one on the Left thought it was a "distraction" when the liberal mainstream media was pouncing 24/7 on Mitt Romney's church and his mormonism.

Memoryaid*** Where I come from--It's not okay to say G** D*** America!!
If Obama makes any excuses for him--then I am going to presume that he agrees with him!!!
