Obama the Dancing Bear?

March 01, 2008 9:24 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Aboard Barack Obama's press plane, the senator strolled back and chatted casually with the press corp somewhere in the air between Providence, R.I., and Cleveland, Ohio.

Obama spoke of the rigors of being a candidate in the limelight and of a campaign trail that he’s said has been significantly harder since the Iowa caucus in early January.

"I call myself a dancing bear," he jokes of his campaign life. "They let me out of my cage. I do my dance. They let me back in my cage. They feed me occasionally. They let me work out. And every once in awhile I break lose, before they get the tranquilizers."

The senator, whose last day off was Valentine's Day, said that doing the consummate candidate’s photo opt of kissing babies on the ropeline makes his day.

"Although I’m worried about the parents ... passing them over like it’s a mosh pit," Obama laughed and demonstrated parents passing babies with their arms outstretched high.

Obama confirmed that that he has never dropped a child in these situations.

"I suspect that would not be good for the vote totals," he said. "I can see that on Youtube."

The father of two talked about missing his own children, and told the story how his oldest daughter, Malia, had recently been Betsy Ross in a school presentation. He recalled how she told him, "I had to do this like 40 times, I just kept saying the same thing over and over again" to which Obama said he can relate.

"I said it’s like running for president," he said.

Obama said that he wouldn’t be running if his children -- 9 and 6 years old -- were in their teenage years.

"Parents are embarrassing enough, right?" the candidate said.

The dancing bear campaigns throughout Ohio this weekend before heading back to Texas on Monday.

He is trying to sweet talk you….
“But I want you to understand what real change is,” Obama told the crowd (in Providence, R.I today). “Don't be fooled. Real change means saying what you mean and meaning what you say.
BUT WAIT:
1) Yesterday morning Mr. Obama, responding to the Clinton ad during a stop in Houston, said: “We’ve seen these ads before. They’re the kind that play on people’s fears to try to scare up votes.” But wait LETS USE IT! The same thing he does in the debates - she gives a policy answer, and he follows with "I agree with Hillary". Does this guy have an original idea in his head?
2) Obama is critical of Clinton concerning her vote for appropriations for the Iraq War. But he has no problem being endorsed by Kerry, Dodd and Daschlel who casted yes vote to the same war resolution as well.
3) His drums of anti-Iraq war is SO hollow that instead of supporting the anti-Iraq War candidate of Connecticut who WAS the democratic primary candidate, he instead supported Joe Lieberman who is very pro-Iraq War.
4) Let’s not forget his “Wink, Wink” to Canada in attacking NAFTA. He is attacking NAFTA in Ohio while his chief policy aide told the Canadians that Obama’s criticism is just rhetoric. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/story?id=4365922&page=1
5) Obama’s talk of real change is saying what you DON’T mean and meaning what you DON’T say.
Let’s wait until Monday when Tony Rezko’s trial start to find out what more Obama meant and DIDN’T say. I just can’t trust him, can you?

WOW what can you say to that this is the easy part once you get to office you have four years of really never being off.I hope he knows that the President of the United states is never offand of course in your third you start this all over

I think Mr. Obama is not a very sincere man. He said he releated to his daughter repeating the words--like 40 times. He said he does that on the campaign trail. Makes me feel like he is just repeating empty words. I was really turned off by his comments.

I think Mrs. Clinton is not a very sincere woman. She said she releated to her husband repeating the words--like 40 times. She said she does that on the campaign trail. Makes me feel like she is just repeating empty words. I was really turned off by her comments.

Obama is not seasoned enough to be president at this time of the application process.

There is no way running a business, that I would consider hiring someone that wouldn't be able to get the onslaught of economic struggles and strategies just to run a small business.

To run the county of the USA.
It's rediculous not to investigate his past, his family and his experience.

Get real and think Vote Hillary

Obama maybe next time.

Hillary is a sure shot
Obama is a long shot.

Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States. Maybe he'll pick Hillary to be Secretary of the Interior.

Posted by: Alice Rea | Mar 1, 2008 11:17:18 PM

Hillary supporters are sounidng like sore losers.

Posted by: Daniel T. | Mar 1, 2008 11:20:05 PM

What a non-article.

Posted by: Carl | Mar 1, 2008 11:22:27 PM

I couldn't agree more, Daniel. Whatever happened to supporting whoever the democratic nominee winds up being? I guarantee that if it was Hillary that was trouncing Obama all across the country, her supporters would call for Barack supporters to unite behind her.

Such a double standard when the "inevitable" candidate is the one running out of steam.

Posted by: Michael H. | Mar 1, 2008 11:22:29 PM

Hey Michael and Daniel, why don't you switch over to SNL and catch Hillary. Kinda bugs you when you see an authentic leader that won't just roll over and quit, doesn't it. You think you can talk her death via the blogs. Ain't happenin' dudes. We'll match you stride for stride, and we've been around a long time. The only think inevitable is this contest is inevitably going into overtime.

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | Mar 1, 2008 11:26:05 PM

WestCoastMessenger, are you kidding? That's the difference between us. I am a proud democrat. Whoever wins the nomination, I'll support them. I don't dislike Hillary. She's a person, with flaws just like any other. Barack is a person, with flaws just like any other. Either of them is better than another Republican in the White House. It is indisputable that they agree on more than 95% of the substantive issues that have been voted on in the Senate.

And by the way, nobody cares that Hillary Clinton has "been around a long time." If longevity was what I looked for in a candidate, John McCain (who by the way actually has LEADERSHIP experience) would get my vote. It's about who can take this country in a new and positive direction. The whole "experience" thing...well it should be obvious by the results of the last 11 contests...people don't care who has been around a long time.

Posted by: Michael H. | Mar 1, 2008 11:32:14 PM

There are three candidates in this race I would love Hillary to win it all, but if she has to drop there will be two.

As a democrat are you asking me to vote for Obama because the Democrat party has to win?

I would like to vote for the person I believe has a vision that I can align with unfortunately if Hillary does not make it Obama does not in my opinion shows me that vision.

On voting day I will have the option of either staying home, writing in Hillary's name or vote for McCain which to me would do a lot more for this country than Obama.

At that point its not voting against Obama I look at it as choosing the best candidate out of the remaining two that will do right for the future.

Posted by: SJ | Mar 1, 2008 11:58:31 PM

If you are a White or Latina democrat women and are not supporting Hillary Clinton, shame on you. Next time I hear a women talking about the difference in salary between men and women, etc ,etc, etc, I am going to ask if she voted for Hillary. This is a qualified women to be president so there is no excuse to support someone else. It is about your mother, your sister and more important your daughters and nieces. You should learn a lesson from African American women (and the African American community in general) who are supporting Obama for what he represents to them.

I think his wife ,Oprah and many more are more hands on then him like he just said they let me out of my cage. Hillary has had the media on her back since Iowa They started she really didn't win in NH And the Washington boys have been hard at it since day one .Her problem was trusting them to be real men But just to see a woman in the top job in the world makes some men crazy

I agree with Santiago. Here is our qualified woman for president. As women we should stand by her. I also hope that men can see her strength. Those of you who care for Hillary and want to see her in the Presidency, pray! Texas is close! Ohio and Rhode Islan look better.

To Alice Rea:
"Hillary is a sure shot
Obama is a long shot."

Obama is a better shot than the false Clinton "Experience" folks like claim and tell people she has.

Obama is an intelligent person (so is his wife)who has shown thu out this campaign that he has better judgement and the ability to handle crisis better than Hilary. Just look at their Campaigns. Who is managing his/her finances better and spending it more wisely. Obama with discretion and hilary picked up where she and bill left off. Lavishly racking up bills that show poor judgement and the opposite of what she says she is about. The only experience she displays the same experience we learned about how she and bill spent money, like that expensive haircut on the plane that was on the tarmac. EXPERIENCE? GOOD JUDGEMENT? THE IRAQ AUTHORIZTION? Get real girl.

I'd rather have Obama answering that Red Phone than HILARY who has POOR judgement and a FLAWED Experience, and Trigger Happy John McCain.

THERE'S ANOTHER OPTION - you can leave the country. People who don't participate in democracy don't deserve it.

AND ANOTHER - Join the ARMY and go serve in Iraq - since you only support WARMONGER candidats, you should REALLY support their wars...

When will Hillary realize that she may have to turn around and try to endorse the man she is ripping apart? What will she say then? That she didn't mean anything she said and he will be a good president? She doesn't understand what an idiot she will look like. Obama is a gentleman who gives up hope.

Posted by: anie | Mar 2, 2008 2:10:13 AM

I find Obama's comments above to be interesting. Obviously, his handlers have a lot of say over him. I just wonder who these people are? They used to call Bill Clinton "Slick Willie". Well, from what I see and hear, Barack has him beat by a mile! Barack is sooooo full of himself. As far as being a change, that is also a joke. He is the consummate political hack who honed is political skills as a community activist. If he is the nominee, he will lead the Dems to defeat. I intend on writing Hillary Clinton's name as a write in candidate if Obama becomes the nominee. This is too bad because I really thought the Dems would have a quality candidate this go around. That will only be true if Hillary wins the nomination. If not, the Dems will be in trouble come the fall. I will vote my conscience before I vote for Obama.

Posted by: GM | Mar 2, 2008 3:08:36 AM

Thanks, Rick. After critiquing both you and Jake about having more Clinton in your basket more often these days--post Clinton-whine, it's nice to see a positive piece about Obama. Thanks.

Posted by: Jerome | Mar 2, 2008 3:19:29 AM

That's news!!! Obama a bear or something??? Give me a break. Who cares. Just another attempt to give Obama supporters their "little" lift for the night. What a joke.

Posted by: Neal | Mar 2, 2008 3:44:38 AM

Obama's comments about being dancing bear show how disconnected he already is from his public self, how little he believes in what he's saying. He wants the power, but he just can't connect with the reality that it means every day he'll be the one who's expected to care about the issues and work on solutions. If he doesn't care about it now, once he gets the power he craves, what will make him care then? Nothing. Vote for someone who's shown she can continue to care and work on issues, year in, year out, because that's what it will take to turn this country around, not someone who already says he feels like a dancing bear. The guy sounds depressed, not presidential.

You're right, Carl, it is a non-article. But it somehow appeals more than the non-article about Clinton suddenly disappeating only to reappear on SNL. With that kind of action one gets the impression that 3AM phone call just might go unanswered because she slipped out the side door in the night to make good on her celebrity status. Not the kind of joke I'd find humorous.

Posted by: SE Croft | Mar 2, 2008 6:57:15 AM

Judging by the comments I just hope this thing will be over soon. The two parts are stiffening and the amount of crap flying is doubling by the day.

Obama and Clinton are both fine candidates with similar solutions that would represent a clean break with W, but at this point the only way for Hillary to win goes through ripping the Dems apart (lawsuits, arm-twisting the DNC to seat FL and MI delegations, etc.) and most likely losing in November.

If I were a Dem in Texas or Ohio I'd surely vote for Obama.

Posted by: gianluca | Mar 2, 2008 7:38:47 AM

Well I would not vote for Obama it sounds like he has a problem he feels caged now ? and his dayghter will be a teen in the white house.

Posted by: Bishop | Mar 2, 2008 9:33:25 AM

Obama has right leadership, skills and judgment and experience to lead this country.. He can inspire people and offer hope and change of future over past, he has vision to bring people together.
Here are some examples for your reference:
1. Leadership: Unknown - no record for Obama holding any public executive positions in Federal and state government or city hall.
2. Skill: excellent - good at turning issues around by "I didn't mean it, what I meant is....",
3. Judgment: excellent - very good at house market and just bought his house away below market value
4. Hope: self described as a blank screen
5. Vision: to bring people together - sounds familiar
6. Inspiration: the same good as pastor
7. Change: Excellent - has made a lot of house improvement with the help of his pal Rezko
8. Experiences: Excellent - specialized in pressing two buttons: YES or NO...Sorry forget the third one "Present"....

Posted by: No-good-judgment | Mar 2, 2008 10:27:07 AM

Getting elected is a matter of getting your message out. Obama's got a consistent message and that's why he's winning. Try making 20-30 speeches a week and then see what you'd have to say about it.

Posted by: chaospress | Mar 2, 2008 10:53:00 AM

Man, he was being humorous and honest with these comments. Lighten up people. I know you're not used to having a real person in the White House, but please start adjusting to the possibility.

Posted by: chaospress | Mar 2, 2008 10:57:11 AM

Funny thing is Obama also in one debate said he was opposed to allowing his kids to see any type of sexual references on TV. However during the super-bowl he runs a pole dancer on his commercial showing her butt. The guy says one thing then does another. You bandwagoners are being misled. Gosh even the international papers are saying he's a big mistake. Stop reading main stream for fact, start looking at the small media print and the international papers for the real deal.

Posted by: realdeal | Mar 2, 2008 11:49:53 AM

After watching major network news programs this morning, I noticed "judgment" being coopted as a campaign buzz word by the Obama supporters with increasing frequency.

Perhaps we shall see whether Senator Obama has exercised good judgment with the outcome and aftermath of the Rezko trial that begins tomorrow.

Another item on the news programs that kept jumping out to me were the results of the polls of voters in both Ohio and Texas.

In every poll that considered the demographic of voter race, the black vote was going to Obama by 85 to 90% or more.

In addition, a large majority of the super delegates defecting from Clinton to the Obama campaign were surprisingly enough...black.

However, when considering other demographics with regards to the candidates, the obvious racial bias was not present.

We have all witnessed the Obama campaign, delegates, super delegates, and supporters play the race card with blinding speed whenever it serves their purpose, in most cases to answer questions about Senator Obama.

Anyone who dares to question Barak Hussein Obama, his past, his family, his record, his experience, his potential, or any other of a host of relevant subjects is labeled as racist, hateful, or fear mongering.

As the judgment of Senator Obama, his family, his campaign, and his supporters is adjudicated in the Rezko trials tomorrow, the race card will undoubtedly again be thrown with great haste.

Taking into consideration the obvious racial bias of black voters and supporters as indicated in the polls, we should ask "Who are the real racists?" and pose a pertinent and deserving question.

Will the rest of the electorate allow the race baiting of the Obama campaign and the racial bias and attacks of black voters to influence their choice of presidential candidate, or not?

Perhaps the silent majority will finally stand up and say "enough is enough," thus exercising a virtue truly lacking in Obama qualifications, good judgment.

Posted by: Ken | Mar 2, 2008 12:21:19 PM

If Senator Hillary Huckabee Clinton does not win Texas and Ohio by a large margin (15%), they need to shut it down for the good of the party. If they feel they are more important than the party then.........and hey, does Hillary Huckabee Clinton have a trial coming up?

Posted by: Fasteddie | Mar 2, 2008 12:35:08 PM

Well, Tom,

I guess some people do not consider polls from ABC, NBC, and CBS as valid sources of facts. In all fairness, polls only represent a snapshot of the preferences of those polled and can vary a few percentage points either way in most cases.

However, both major political parties and many voters consider polls as a valid consideration of a posed question until a new poll comes out. As such, polls do, in fact, constitute a major source of information consumed by the average American.

For the most part, the only items represented as facts we have concerning the four, current presidential candidates are the facts that they or their campaigns agree to.

I appreciate the fact that you would respond to my post.

At least, you and I are thinking.

Posted by: Ken | Mar 2, 2008 12:55:28 PM

Ken, you HAVE to be joking. ObamaVets was responding to a Hillary supporter who pulled the race card (and a very ugly one at that). He proved no point of yours AT ALL.

Posted by: Emily | Mar 2, 2008 1:08:34 PM

I agree with the other women in voting for Hillary. It is a time for REAL change. If there really is only a slight difference between Obama and Clinton (although I believe experience is huge) then there is no reason for women not to support Hillary. When I see woman fawning over Obama because they think he is some kind of rock star I am embarrassed for them. The reason so many older women can relate to Hillary and what is happening in this election is because they have been around a little and have learned some life lessons themselves. We will never have equal pay and equal opportunities until we get equal representation. How many times have women worked for years at a company and when a promotion becomes available they have the honor of training some twenty something man, fresh off the streets with no experience and no clue? Come on women wake up!! This opportunity may not come again any time soon. Stop acting like teenagers and vote for your future and those of your daughters!!!

Posted by: Firefighter | Mar 2, 2008 1:12:59 PM

"If you are a White or Latina democrat women and are not supporting Hillary Clinton, shame on you."

This is what bother me about Clinton supporters. And before labelling me a hypocrite, I'm sure that there are Obama supporters as well who say, "If you're black and you don't vote for Obama, shame on you." The fact is, I haven't heard anyone say that... while I've heard many people use that logic to support Clinton. However, I ackonowledge both are possible.

What annoys me about the statement is that it implies the person wants Clinton in office to improve Civil Rights for Women, seeing as Clinton is a woman. By supporting Clinton on her gender alone (as the rest of the post proceeded to suggest) you then just set our society back again in terms of sex equity. Vote for her because of her policies, because you don't like the other candidates, or because she inspires you. Don't vote for her because she's a woman.

Something else that's been repeated a lot here is Clinton supporters declaring they would vote for McCain over Obama. Once again, I acknowledge that not all of them would, and that there are likely Obama supporters who feel the same way, etc. However, once again, I've heard much more of this from Clinton supporters than from Obama supporters.

Posted by: George | Mar 2, 2008 1:22:39 PM

With several Supreme Court seats opening up soon, you can't let them go to the Republicans. And on both sides, I implore supporters not to go "sour grapes" and not vote for the other candidate because they beat your preferred candidate. By voting for McCain, you spit on the entire Democratic party, including your favored candidate.

Posted by: George | Mar 2, 2008 1:24:43 PM

It's amazing how many people have no sense of humor whatsoever. Obama was obviously displaying good natured humor with his comments, I thought they were pretty funny. It's good to know the next POTUS has a sense of humor just like the next guy. And being able to poke fun at yourself is a sign of confidence. You'll notice that insecure people never do that, they're too afraid someone will believe them.

And you Hillary supporters need to stop with the attacks. Hillary is likely to drop out of the race on Wed or Thurs. Then the only choice will be Obama or 100 years in Iraq. Much as people may have liked Hillary, I hope their disappointment doesn't run so deep that they're willing to sentence thousands more of our young people to die in the dessert because of it.

WHAT SORE LOSERS. WHAT A TOTAL LACK OF LEADERSHIP. NO WONDER SHE IS SUCH A UNIQUELY POLARIZING FIGURE IN AMERICAN POLITICS.

GO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Dave | Mar 2, 2008 2:59:38 PM

What "seasoning" do you want? Coriander, parsley, thyme, sage, fennel, marjoram, rosemary?

There is no "wait your turn" to be President. You either strike or you sit on the sidelines. There has only been one "reluctant" President in recent history, and that was Gerald R. Ford. And he wasn't re-elected.

Hillary thinks "it's her turn" and on that count she, too, is wrong.

Posted by: Jade7243 Hussein | Mar 2, 2008 4:01:31 PM

You keep using that word(s). I do not think it means what you think it means.

Why don't the MSM or Senator Clinton's supporters ever put the "blank screen" comment in context?

"Undoubtedly, some of these views will get me in trouble, I am new enough on the national political screen that I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripe project their own views. As such I am bound to disappoint some, if not all of them. Which perhaps indicates a second, more intimate theme to this book - namely how I or anybody else in public office, can avoid the pitfalls of fame, the hunger to please, the fear of loss, and thereby retain that kernel of truth, that singular voice within each of us that reminds us of our deepest commitments."

I think the word you're looking for is introspection.

Posted by: Patty | Mar 2, 2008 5:10:36 PM

I just hope she points out that Obama now has a pamphlet about his economic ideas he is passing out at events....sound familiar? Yep that's right still another Hillary good idea Obama stole. Why are so many going for the Xerox when the original idea person Hillary is right there? To me he is cheap knock off of Hillary in the form of a man. She has been working and helping create life changing legislation for 30 years starting with the Disabled Children's education laws being enacted...they helped my son go to school 28 years ago, so I know what I'm saying. She helped the first responders when Bush turned his back, she got medical care for millions of children, members of the Reserves all over this country. She was improving lives 30 years ago when Obama was a teenager on the streets getting in trouble. She got body armor for troops fighting in Iraq, she has been on committees studying how to get the military back on it's feet after Bush decimated it. She is on the Armed Services committee and knows what is really going on, Obama hasn't conveened one committee meeting for his Oversite comm. for NATO, and Aphganistan. An important job he blew off to go on the campaign trail. He's just too darn busy to go to work. It's a pattern of getting a job, and then moving on I find disturbing. Both promised they wouldn't run for President in their first Senate term, only she kept her word. He always has some snippy, lame excuse but they ARE excuses none the less.

Posted by: Ginger | Mar 2, 2008 6:04:05 PM

I think that was a funny little insight. Nice article.

Posted by: sillyallday | Mar 2, 2008 6:40:03 PM

Ginger, I totally agree with you. Obama's history is of a person interested in getting more power, not in serving the people who elected him. I really think it will be more of the same if he's President, lofty speeches, but please don't bother me with the details of getting real programs in place.

And I don't think he was being funny on the plane - all his comments indicate a person who is, in fact, disconnected from the election process, who is struggling to remain appropriate by borrowing phrases and ideas from others. Again, the man has a good mind, but just doesn't want to spend 5 minutes sitting down and thinking of his own speech themes. He doesn't trust himself and doesn't want to take risks so uses phrases that have gone over well for others before - is that leadership? I don't think so. Hillary is her own person, not afraid to take risks - I hope enough people realize that before Tuesday.

Posted by: Christine | Mar 2, 2008 6:42:57 PM

Reading some of these HRC supporter comments reminds me of high school pettiness. "Give em Hell, Hillary!"--what is this a football pep rally?? I swear, it seems like some folks are stuck in believing this race has to be a bitter fight to the death. It's either that or pleas to vote for Hill because she's a woman--as if she should be offered a pass on a stunning show of poor judgment, planning & integrity. Given the desperate behavior of the say anything/do anything candidate herself, I shouldn't be surprised...but it is sad.

Posted by: KC | Mar 2, 2008 8:42:58 PM

the only caterwauling, spitefulness, b lindsided, nastiness and pettiness.. til now...has been generated primarily by B O's followers.. or are you trolls?
( I ask because trolls have difficulty seeing in the light of day as well.)

In my mind, Hillary would by far be the best choice for president because she is brilliant, can think without a teleprompter, has procured health care for 6,000,000 children, has a better health care plan which will cover more Americans that would B O's, and knows what's going on across the Atlantic.

And BECAUSE she's NOT teflon. We know all about her...... no surprises.... and we believe that her virtues way
surpass her "baggage".

And because we remember how great the Clinton years were..... and realize the vvalue of having Bill Clinton as advisor
.. for free!!... is nothing to be sneezed at.

But YOU guys and gals .... who are all so perfect to your spouses or significant others...and even those who are not.. can only wallow in an event which caused her pain but which she handled like a "champ"... with dignity!

And I'M posting this missive, not Hillary so you can't fault her!!!

but I'll say it again.. and again:

GIVE 'EM HELL, HILLARY

he is a dancing bear. and if we are dumb enough to elect him, he owes so many people he'll spend the next four years dancing their dance. but, despite recent evidence, i'm trying very hard to believe that the american people will come to their senses before november.

he's already talking to reporters about who (specifically) will be in his cabinet - his arrogance knows no limits!

It is too risky to handle this great country to him at this time. He hasn't shown any film stand in his record. Besides "shotting" on Hillary or McCain. He can't even "reject" the support of Farakhan directly in the debate, do you expect him to stand for you?

He is a very smart politician, he shot on Hillary to take alot of money from Lobbyists, but did he get any? Sure he did. This is a smart move, pointed something people don't like to his rivals and protray himself as a clean candidate. If someone can help compile all his talks about his rivals like: John Edwards and others, we can see take he talks and criticized other but actual he did it himself. some examples:

1) NAFTA, saying Hillary supported that in the 90's, in fact he approved that in 2004???

2) Saying Afghanistan is Al-qeida's base, but no hearing when he is the subcommittee that handle Afghanistan?

3) Saying Hillary using scaring tactic, but he used the same scaring tactic after few hours?

Can you trust someone like that?

Wow, a lot of stupid comments on this thread. Obama was on his plane having a light-hearted moment talking about how he is like a dancing bear. He said"... sometimes they feed me...", if a person can't understand that he was being funny and using a hyperbole then you deserve to get a heart attack from getting all worked up about a comment that is funny. Quite frankly, it makes him a little more likable.

Oh I forgot The Clinton's love to lie. So if she loses she'll be a menace until Denver *sigh*
