Obama's Bracket: The Politics of Nope

Share

March 20, 2008 4:16 PM

ABC News' Rick Klein, Karen Travers, and David Schoetz Report: In a truly historic development in disclosure from a presidential candidate, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has released his NCAA Tournament bracket.

It is, in short, neither audacious nor hopeful. To Cinderella, it says, "No, we can't."

To view Obama's bracket click here.

For a man who purports to know his basketball, it is surprisingly free of unconventional picks. And he may have handed Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., a potent electability argument: Can America trust a man who, when he picks up that phone at 3 am, does not select a single 5-12 upset?

Bottom line: This is the bracket of a cautious politician who is not immune to political pandering.

First, the early rounds. Obama chooses a total of five first-round upsets, out of 32 games, with the boldest choice being No. 13 Winthrop advancing over over No. 4 Washington State (clearly thanking the voters of South Carolina, who launched his campaign into the stratosphere).

But then he has none of his low seeds advancing another round; in fact, he's predicting only one upset in the entire 16 games of the second round. Does that say, "Yes, we can?"

He even eschews a trendy choice by taking No. 3 Wisconsin over No. 6 University of Southern California in the Midwest region. (By the way, Obama carried Wisconsin and was beat soundly in California -- sensing a trend?)

Then there's his Final Four: Kansas, UCLA, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh. That's three No. 1's and one No. 4.

The Jayhawks? His mom was born in Kansas -- easy call.

Pittsburgh -- come on, Pittsburgh? Is anyone paying attention to the Pennsylvania primary? He has the Panthers beating Stanford to get to San Antonio -- thanks again for nothing, California.

He breaks his no-California rule by choosing UCLA, but who doesn't have UCLA going to the Final Four?

And to win it all, he picks the University of North Carolina. North Carolina, you may recall, votes on May 6, and while taking the Tar Heels may be writing off the Duke vote, that's the effete liberal cohort that's already in his camp. (And loyalty has its limits: Obama's body man, Reggie Love, won a national championship with Duke in 2001, but this is not as bad as Rudy Giuliani rooting for the Red Sox.)

Politics trumps all: UNC fans are clearly the white working-class favorite -- Obama's demographic challenge.

This is not a bracket we believe in.

UPDATE: Politico's Ben Smith e-mails to point out that choosing Pittsburgh was a flip-flop: Obama told a North Carolina radio station Thursday morning that he would be choosing Stanford OVER Pittsburgh to get to the Final Four. So he was against Pittsburgh before he was for it?

Come on, ridiculous analysis.

LOL @ this article. Are we grasping at straws here?

Posted by: Will | Mar 20, 2008 4:27:32 PM

I am getting tired of this primary... its going on too long so we get stories like this.

Posted by: matt | Mar 20, 2008 4:37:35 PM

Its. A. Joke. The whole bloody article.

People really need to take a breath.

Posted by: Mark | Mar 20, 2008 4:47:29 PM

It was funny too. It is rather pro-Obama if you think about it. He like to play basketball.

Posted by: hkeith | Mar 20, 2008 4:50:11 PM

The 'March Madness' is driving crazy every section of American life at the moment; so it makes sense that anyone who every went to a college (and is into basketball and sports as Obama is) would not want to be left out of the fun. lol

I'm not sure, though, of the attempt to psychoanalyze the Senator on the basis of his "March Madness" picks.

Posted by: New Yorker | Mar 20, 2008 4:50:43 PM

SENATOR OBAMA obviously relies on REVEREND JEREMIAH WRIGHT for both spiritual guidance and basketball picks. OBAMA is not of presidential caliber.

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | Mar 20, 2008 4:53:27 PM

Sorry but I just don't see any humor in it. You think this is funny? Careful, it cleverly introduces some catchy psychological dimunitions such as "Politics of Nope" and otherwise seems to deride Obama's genuine thought and language, and that makes this seem more like a cynical attack that crosses the line of irreverence into empty mockery. You want a "humorous" article with a political edge where folks actually laugh out loud? Pay me whatever they paid the writers for this and I'll deliver it.

Posted by: Sinclair | Mar 20, 2008 5:00:13 PM

FL-vet - you're right on! As a PA Republican, I am voting for McCain - just as Rush has suggested!

Go Operation Chaos!

Posted by: Nancy7 | Mar 20, 2008 5:00:35 PM

A JOKE!!! THE ARTICLE IS A JOKE!!

I can't believe that there's people out there that haven't figured that out...but then again, they are voting for Obama.

Posted by: Mike | Mar 20, 2008 5:00:50 PM

Actually this is not a joke that we need today. Give Obama a break please! How many perfect people do we have here including the writer, who has always something negative to say about Obama, jokingly or not. And to the Obama haters, you should thank him for finding a reason to vent your hate and allowing you to show your true colors:the color of evil hate.

Posted by: voter | Mar 20, 2008 5:02:00 PM

speech on race given by Obama appears to have had little effect on changing public perception. During a prepared This speech which was highly orchestrated and by invitation to mostly supporters, Obama went to great length repeating reasons for his continued association and friendship with his spiritual advisor Rev. Wright and his membership at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Obama said the pastor introduced him to the Christian faith and continues to perform God’s work.

See new pole: Hillary is up by nearly 20 points in PA!!!!!!!!!!!!

SHAME ON OBAMA!

Posted by: Rob-in-MI | Mar 20, 2008 5:03:09 PM

This article has no relation to Obama's pathetic speech, lies, and criminal activities.

I'm just elated that Hillary is up in national polls by 18 points!

Go Hillary-2008!

Greta, apparently they find it hilarious, though I would describe it as false and flippant fluff that doesn't have the heart and soul of real humor. However, some here have claimed I have no sense of humor-- and you also, evidently. I suspend judgment and give it the benefit of the doubt, but it will be interesting to see what others think-- if anyone addresses my thoughts rather than turning this discussion into a SHAME ON OBAMA campaign, which is already happening. Oh well, so much for the humor, hehe.

Stupid move by Obama to hype this.

Out of a 3 minutes sound bite by Jeremiah Wright the last minute or so is completely ignored or conveniently overlooked which is:

"Ah, I am so glad I have a God who knows what it is to be a poor black man in a country, in a culture, that is control by and run by rich white people. He taught me, Jesus did, how to love my enemies. He taught me how to love the hell out of mine enemies."

When the conservatives were pushing George Bush we on us we were told,"God is bringing damnation on American i.e. 9/11 because of the innocent blood of the unborn in the abortion clinics. This is what the white churches were saying, I know I sat in one.

Religious leaders are very demonstrative in the illustrations, and it is frustrating to hear this one sided view point on JEREMIAH WRIGHT.

Only a desperate one will try to make political capital out of what is purely humour and sport. Obama is showing that there are other things other than political gamemanship

Posted by: Winchesterlad | Mar 20, 2008 7:43:16 PM

Obama supporters pack it up. Your man is
affraid to run in a big state. What is he afraid of, winning or losing? If he
wins one of these states the nomination
is his to lose. No vote in Michigan and
Florida then the superdelegates should
declare all previous wins as "winner
takes all". See how much of Obama leads
stand up. It would still be Hillary all
the way. By the way only Hillary was
born here. Neither Obama nor MCCain was
born here. Should the superdelegates be
reminded of this fact or we should
remind Howard Dean? This Obama nonsense
is going on for too long. Obama believes
in disenfranchisement of Florida voterss
that voted in large numbers for Hillary,
he gets the nomination, prevents our
candidate from winning the nomination,
then we the disenfranchised hillary
voters turn around and vote for him in
November? Did Hillary voters only
attended Sunday School all of a sudden?
No florida vote count no Obama support.
We just stay home in Florida and
Michigan and watch MCCain cream Obama

As to your question, it is one of those loaded ones that I do not believe in answering-- you know, like, "When was the last time you got off your high horse?" or "Are you with me, or with the terrorists?" Just empty rhetorical tricks that do not impress me. But you know what else doesn't impress me (real question)? Sporlitical buffoonery like this article, which makes readers like you tell me to massage my brows-- but as I said, that was an ok experience, so thanks for the instructions. I really don't have any for you. Sorry.

The comments here are as good an example as any as to why Obama is going to lose the general election, and badly. His supporters are a bunch of self-righteous, completely humorless, overly-sensitive, self-absorbed children who believe the entire culture should come to a complete standstill in order to reflect on the sublime greatness of their candidate in hushed, worshipful tones. For the rest of us, this article, so clearly light in tone and meant completely in jest -- a jest that, incidentally, is directed squarely at the tea-reading prognostications of political reporters, not at Barack Obama in the least -- served its purpose of a welcome diversion from the increasingly tiresome political news of the past couple of weeks. Additionally, as a basketball fan, it was interesting to compare Obama's picks to mine (we both like UNC for the title, as it turns out).

Obama is betting that voters have the same reaction to the Wright speech as they do to his candidacy itself: they are so persuaded by his insightful diagnosis of the national ailment that they are not bothered by the fact that he has done little to date to cure it.

Indeed Obama has been getting a free ride from the press! Clearly, he is not fit to be the next Commander-In-Chief! Imagine seeing Rev. Wright at the White House some day giving sermons to Obama!

Shame on you Obama. Read about your dirty little secrets even your supporters cringe at:

There is indeed a pro-Clinton bias evidenced in the media's refusal to examine her record, under a sweeping over generalization which is essentially false, that "She's been vetted" just because she's been around longer, because she says so, and because she was crowned as the "inevitable" candidate by every establishment in the US early on. However, the media has treated McCain as one of the preordained candidates in this race.

Failure to investigate either McCain or Clinton's records or to hold them accountable is obvious to those of us who are not part of media or politics and are trained observers or people and institutions. For instance, there is no investigation in the media into the questionable financial deal McCain employed to fund his primary campaign nor any vetting of both, McCain and Clinton's problematic relationships or doings with regard to finances and political favors. Similarly, McCain was portrayed with righteous justification against New York Times' expose simply because it did not literally put the proverbial smoking gun in McCain's hand; contrarily, Obama has been practically put behind bars with Rezko by mainstream media, despite the over 300 investigative reports done on him yielding nothing unscrupulous in Obama's dealings w/ Rezko.

McCain and Clinton have also been let off the hook for their acceptance of endorsements from the likes of John Hagee and Adelfa Callejo respectively, despite their very openly xenophobic and racist propaganda against Muslims, Catholics, Blacks. And then there are the past & present alliances both candidates have courted with Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, who were easily forgiven for their anti American rhetoric… perhaps because it was in the right color perhaps? Both candidates were allowed to cloak themselves in an appeal to "free speech," while on the other hand, the black candidate was left pinned and wriggling until he uttered the right words - "reject AND denounce' against another Black man for the latter's anti Semitic Jewish/anti fundamentalist Christian views. This even after Obama had already very strongly critiquing FarrahKhan's positions. After that episode, now the Wright controversy is being milked thoroughly by ABC after it picked up the bone that Fox threw before it and have since then, continued to malign Obama by insinuating a deeper more sinister reason why Obama sat in the pews of Wright’s Church. Klein actually straw manned Obama so called “reporting” the Senator’s efforts to address the media questions as his efforts to “air his dirty laundry…” and somehow Obama’s slimy ways to wriggle out by “making the cable rounds.” When Obama called on the media to vet his opponent's record, reporters mocked him with the "he wants us to hit back at her for him" sentiment. Now Klein is at it again, presenting the delegate conflict as if it is Obama hat has created this mess and is obstructing the re-vote.

Could the fact that the corporate masters behind this media have invested heavily in Clinton have anything to do with this continued slanted and many times straw manned coverage against Obama?

Posted by: Jackie | Mar 21, 2008 12:15:23 AM

Now that was solid, logical and coherent argumentation Jackie, I appreciate you.

Andy: You are one of those simplistic dividers. The first HALF of your comment merely creates one group that are all humorless Obama worshippers (a very unfair and utterly groundless categorization), and your second "group" is "..the rest of us" (meaning YOU and YOU alone as far as I can see) who have enjoyed this as a light diversion more commenting on the prognosticators than Obama. Do you really think I cannot see the dull-witted authorial intent of the piece? I do hope you enjoyed your tea as you chuckled and did not choke on it as you found your uncanny but delightful UNC bond with Obama. In any case, you haven't convinced me one bit, and this writing is artless and unimaginative content apparently deserving of official publication on this site for a reader just like you. Unfortunately for ABC, you are one of the few. I am one reader who has no intentions of dedicating my mind to this site ever again, so enjoy another cheap and weak-minded attack of all those people in my category-- I'll not be responding again.

Posted by: rachel | Mar 21, 2008 1:50:52 AM

Obama’s character and judgment, what he truly thinks and believes is in question because he listen to man preach similar messages for over 20 years. Yeah, I agree that it was a bit radical in how it was said and very offensive and harsh to the ears. But never-the-less, he spoke the truth. America has done some very awful things, not only abroad, but to its own citizens... and I'm not just talking during the civil rights era or years ago, I'm talking about right now. Legalized racism...100/1 disparity in sentencing for drugs (50 grams crack-black vs. 500 grams cocaine/white); sub-prime lending mortgage foreclosures; funding disparity amongst schools; young men and women barred from receiving financial assistance for college due to a felony conviction no matter how petty and the list goes on and on. Who do you think these laws target? Certainly not the majority. What really crazy to me is folks believe Obama is questionable for the presidency, but elite gangster, George Bush has done nothing but questionable things and amazingly, the American people has yet to call for an impeachment of this fool. A hateful, evil man! A man who stole the presidency; lied to the American people to get bills passed that infringe on the rights of its citizen; started a war based on lies to feed his own selfish greed which has resulted in thousands of death; has destroyed more families than can be counted and has placed this country in the worst economic crisis that has probably ever been recorded. For the life of me, I simply can't understand it. I'm beginning to think that folks are truly psychotic... just a french fry short of being manic. If we as a country do not put our differences aside and work to together to achieve the common goal, we, the United State, will continue to be divided . It isn't what is... it's what it’s perceived to be! C'mon people, get your mind right!!!

Obviously, the whole article is pure garbage. Sounds like the author is an Obama hater. In 1992, I convinced my then girlfriend to vote Clinton. She and her parents had thus far voted republicans. She voted C again later. This time, despite all my admiration for the Clinton (I cried during the republicans' outrageous political assassination of President Clinton. This time around--and although I am a registered republican, I will vote Obama.

People can resort to the politics of nagativism. But they can only alienate voters.

Any rational individual knows that there is no logic in sports. And for anyone to use Obama's basket picks to gauge him politically is ridiculous and a gross insult to human intelligence.

Lighten up the article is a joke a fluff piece just like the fuzy animal stories we get on the tv news. Its the Easter holidays not alot of political news going around.

Hey voter as for the lay off Obama bit, get a grip you weren't complaing when article after article attacked Clinton and McCain. His honeymoon is over thats all and now he has to play in the real world. Its just sad it took Saturday Night live to show most of these reporters that a love fest is not journalisim.

I do believe Obama will win the nomination for all the wrong reasons. I don't believe he will win the election. He still has alot of support but it seems alot of people who turned out during the primaries thinking he was something special have realised he is no differentjust another politican with questionable associations and have lost heart and they won't turn out for him in November. Just my perspective.

Posted by: gee | Mar 21, 2008 8:21:04 PM

People, come on! And Michelle, thanks! Now, there are people with a really short---mind. To imply that because Obama has listened to a "Radical" preacher for 20 years he agrees with his views is totally ridiculous and a lack of intellectual honesty. I for one don't go to church because of the preacher. I go to church because of what it represents. Preachers come and go. The church, as the body of Christ/God, remains. Those who hold such petty views about Obama are those, in American society who still believe, like the 3K folks, that a person of color cannot be president in America. However, I am thrilled by the unprecedented huge numbers of Americans of all colors, races, ages, who support Senator Obama. I saw the factor in DC! I still have an Obama banner in display n the rear of my car. Mind you, I didn't receive it from a person of color. It was one of Obama's white supporters who handed it to me while I drove home from work! These are true Americans. They are America of tomorrow. They are America of hope. They are the builders of the new America. And while you may hurt Obama's presidential bid, you will never stop the factor Obama. The momentum will continue and there will be other Obamas, irrespective of their race, gender, or color.

We are tired of the politics of personal assassination. Billion of dollas are being spent in a totally stupid war in Iraq, which Senator Clinton blessed, while Obama opposed it. Can you fathom what that fortune would do to our schools, our vets, hospitals, inner cities, or aid to poor nations? Wouldn't that money play a critical role in our economy at this time? What would you no say, had Obama voted for that war?

The same political of NOPE to people of color is reflected in the attitude of the Pennsylvania House democrat. He's been at odds with Clinton over her vote in favor of the Iraq war. Now, because Obama is Clintonb's opponent in the democratic nomination, the same man is telling the world that Clinton is the candidate who would be more effective at...ending a war she initially supported!

Total hypocrisy!

This is the stupidest and most irrelevant article I have ever wasted my time reading. Seems like some lesser "journalists" feel left out if they don't get in on the political and media gang-rape of Obama that's been going on lately. Get a life, Mr. Klein. And shame on you for publishing this tripe, ABC.

Posted by: zorba | Mar 22, 2008 12:13:16 AM

Hypocrisy is decrying divisiness then failing to act out against messages of hate. I got to church to listen to the teachings of the Bible and to give thanks to God. I could not in good conscience listen to a sermon of hate and allow the fact that I sit there be seen as endorsing it. I can guarantee you that if a priest stood there and delivered a sermon of intolerance I would vote with my feet and remove my impressionable children at once. I have enough to explain about the world to my kids without trying to explain a house of God delivering a message of hate. I expect a message of love and forgivness. We had a priest who went into a classroom and told 8 year olds that IVF was an abomination. I can assure you parents rallied and he was rebuked and transferred. Hate speech is only spread when people don't stand up against it as Sen Obama well knows. He doesn't agree with it but he just sat there what does that tell you. Remember evil is what happens when good men do nothing. There are hundreds of churches out there he has choices, don't try and make excuses his lack of judgement in this matter.

"LIES YOU CAN BELIEVE IN"

2. Lied about Rezko amount of money
3. Lied about not knowing what Wright says in church
4. Lies about wanting to unite the country when he has been in public office for years and has no evidence to support any attempt to unite his own state
5. Lies about wanting to change politics in Washington...today's proof - releasing a photo of Bill Clinton with Wright after slamming Hillary's campaign just a few weeks ago about releasing his own photo in Somali clothes

I could go on and on and on but so many people already believe in his lies so appropriately vote for Obama:
" LIES YOU CAN BELIEVE IN"

This is unbelievable. What I want to hear from both Mr. Obama and Ms Hillary is "What are you going to do for the seniors of America?" Instead of playing games, let's hear some solid solutions -Oh, that's right - there aren't any......

This whole process makes me nauseaus. I'm still waiting for substance not silly rhetoric.

If you think Obama's picks are bad look at McCain's picks. He has #16 Mississippi Valley beating #1 UCLA and Texas-Arlington knocking off Memphis BOTH IN THE FIRST ROUND.

Who in their right mind (well we are talking about McCain and he does get confused alot) picks two number ones to choke in round one? #16 seed are 0-92 against #1 teams and he picked two to win this year?

"Obama's Bracket: The Politics of Nope"?What a load of utter rubbish. To outsiders, the 2008 US presidential elections has clearly shown the rest of the world two things, namely that ignorance and hypocrisy is absolutely rampant in American society and the country's claim to leadership of the world is not based on the superior knowledge, intellect or capability of its populace, and secondly that even in the selection of its president the USA is incapable of demonstrating the high ideals of democracy that it is forever ramming down other peoples' throats. One need look no further than the 2008 presidential elections - crude, rude, dishonest, morally bankrupt, sadistic, self-destructive and lacking in self-respect and respect for others - to understand why it is that the United States of America has lost trust, standing and respect in the world today.

Obama's speech is an insult to all Americans. In his eyes, race is only between black and white. He left out other 20%+ Americans on other races. He only mentioned black anger. He did not mention anything for blacks to improve themselves. Just look at black has the highest ratio of criminals to its race in our country. I think he should address black doing self-improvement first before making any speech to insult other races. Thanks for reading. Have a nice day.

Haha thank you abc for this article. Even down to his stupid NCAA bracket, Obama will stop at nothing to promote himself politically. Pittsburgh is just starting to become a good team, but it is not good enough for FINAL FOUR. At least this choice is politically motivated.

Obama is pathetic.

Oh who called it? Pittsburgh lost to Michigan State tonight and MICHIGAN advances to Sweet Sixteen.

Apparently his "prescience" with the Iraq war does not apply to everything.

I'm inspired just by the sight of Senator Obama and, oh, when he speaks so "eloquently," I'm reminded of Chris Matthews as I too begin to drool and practically faint in awe of this charlatan who must be the envy of all carnival barkers. Whatever the topic, whether it be Senator Obama's grandma, Presidents Lincoln and Kennedy, March Madness, and everything in between and apart, I join with Governor Bill "Judas" Richardson in proclaiming the Illinois Senator as the "one and only," that is the one and only, but hopefully the last, impostor of "knowledge" we will ever encounter.

This article could have been done without analysis of Sen. Obama's picks...Dumbfounded? However, it appears Sen. Obama may have picked a winner - UNC or KS...

Go Obama '08

Oh yea, he/she without sin cast the first stone!

I met Senator Obama on the campaign trail in Iowa and he would not sign a baseball. He is the rudy. He want people to vote for him but not sign a baseball? The only candidate that would not sign one. I will be voting for John McCain unless Hillary is the democratic candidate.
