Pelosi Says Bush is Wrong on FISA
March 15, 2008 12:42 PM
ABC News' Lindsay Hamilton reports: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., defended the House version of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act in an interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on Friday. The FISA bill passed in the House on Friday, but still needs to be reconciled with the Senate's version. President Bush has said he would veto the House bill.
When asked by Stephanopoulos about the president's take that the House version of FISA will make America less safe, Pelosi responded, "The president is wrong, and the president knows it."
"The bill that we had put forth really was based on what we call the McConnell principles, the principles that the director of national intelligence said were essential to keeping America safe. The president has a different view," Pelosi said. "The president knows that he has all the authority he needs to collect from the underlying FISA bill and the orders that are still in place."
"Is he lying to the country?" Stephanopoulos asked.
"The president knows that he has all the authority he needs -- the underlying FISA bill and the orders he already has in place with the Protect America Act that passed earlier," Pelosi responded. "Certainly there needed to be modernizations to the original FISA bill to reflect the changes in technology, and the president knows that Democrats support the collection against these terrorists, wherever the point of collection is, if they fit the bill of who should be collected upon."
Pelosi continued, "The president maintains that he has inherent authority to spy on anyone, and our bill is consistent with the law that says that FISA is the authority under which collections may take place. This was recognized in 1978, when President Carter signed a bill, written by Congress, placing the courts in charge of how intelligence is collected in the United States. The president rejects that and says, 'I can do whatever I want.'"

The complete interview with Speaker Pelosi will air Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

The "do nothing" Congress is the last one....the 109th. They were projected to meet for only 99 days out of the year 2006. Which was 9 days less than the "do nothing" Congress of 1947-48. This Congress tries to get things done but the Republican Senate does everything to block every bill proposed. At least this Congress actually meets and tries to accomplish what the American people voted them to do. Yeah remember the American people voted a Democratic Congress and also remember that before you complain about them doing nothing, it is the Republicans that don't want to do anything. They do not give a rats a$$ about the will of the people. They have their own agenda and it's making the rich richer and the poor poorer. Oh yeah and let's not forget the most important of all Victory In Iraq! Whatever the he!! that means.

Our President is an arrogant nitwit. There's really nothing else to say.

Dear "DCVoter",
I understand your distaste of Pelosi (we are all entitled to varied opinions) but to accuse her of having "sided with the...anti US..." is patently false.
Is it "anti US" to violate the US Constitution, as Bush has done (Article 6, Clause 2)? What I don't understand is how the Konservatives fail to see this aggregious violation(s) while shouting to "support our troops". Sounds rather Nazi-like to me.
Party at our house the day Obama is sworn into office! You're invited, DCVoter.
How's that for democracy?

Nancy Pelosi is speaker of the House. Therefore she is third in line to the Presidency. If Bush & Cheney are impeached now, she would be the next President. She doesn't want the job. Can't blame her, it's a real Mess ! But when Bush & Cheney are out of the "protection", Criminal Charges could be brought. But I doubt that will happen, they have enough dollars to buy their way out.

For RUTH... Whats wrong with Pelosi saying the Iraqi Government is not moving fast enough.. Do you think thats a joke? Open your eyes and you`ll see that she`s right. If the Iraqi Government were moving fast enough we`d be out of Iraq by now.. Wake up..

PELOSI IS WRONG ON MOST THINGS. Barack Obama’s victory of Hillary Clinton is a stolen one. When he did not side with the voters of Florida that their votes should count, he pretty much showed us that he would be willing to win by cheating the voters---by stripping them of their vote for the actions of their governor Mr. Christ. Mr. Obama was on the Florida ballot. The people paid their taxes. Obama did campaign in Florida. The Only reason Obama is not screaming for those votes to count is because he did not win in Florida. It sucks that he would support stripping voters in an entire state of their votes because he is a sore looser. Obama would be all about Florida’s votes being counted, had he won. Obama’s win by Race. THE POLLS WERE OPEN! THE PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE VOTED! IF THEY DID NOT, IT’S THEIR FAULT! COUNT FLORIDA’S VOTES!

Pelosi would rather satisfy the Kos wackos--and more so the trial lawyer lobby--than protect America from terrorist plots!
How is listening in, without a warrant, on communications between two parties both outside the US--but whose connection happens to patch through the US--violating the rights of American citizens??
The Senate (including 20 Dems) was wise enough to pass a rational bill, rather than ignite a decade of billion dollar lawsuits.
Six of the 8 Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee supported the FISA Amendments Act. Twenty of the 51 Democrats in the full Senate supported it. Recently 21 state attorneys general wrote a letter urging the Congress to pass the Senate bill. Seven of the signatories were Democrats. There are plenty of House Democrats who would sign a similar letter--if given the chance. They agree that reforming FISA and granting the communications providers immunity is the right thing to do. They agree that this debate is about neither politics nor partisanship. Nor is it a debate over executive authority. It really is all about protecting Americans from attack. These Democrats are all members of their party in good standing. Isn't it time Speaker Pelosi listened to them?

bluesman622 - Remember, the Republicans impeached Clinto for a lot less, a blow job does not compare to starting a war on false pretenses.
carl - In order to obtain and maintain a moral authority in the world we have to treat the citizen of every country to the same standards that we hold ourselves - the governments as well. We do that by sanctions and diplomacy. How do we do it to the citizens, it should be by not only holding them to the same standards we hold ourselves, but granting them the same rights.
Also, in your discussion about the number of democrats supporting the versions of the FISA reform bill remember that she is listening to the majority of the democrats - 51 - 20 is 31, which is a clear majority of them. This is a democratic republic so the majority of our elected representatives lead the country.

Pelosi refuses to listen to the bi-partisan Majority (68-29! on 2/12/08) in the Senate who want to protect America from terrorists--rather than the trial lawyers who want to nail tele-coms who cooperated with the government just after 9/11.

Bush is wrong about EVERYTHING and so he should resign, taking his entire administration with him. And Pelosi should resign if he doesn't resign. If she can't see he must be IMPEACHED then she is as bad as he is. Stop the bleeding of EVERYTHING; we can't wait for the election, it will allow too much more to happen. If this group of goons had tried, they couldn't have ruined this country more than they have.
