Pentagon Admits Mistaken Missile Shipment
March 25, 2008 11:52 AM
ABC News' Jonathan Karl and Luis Martinez Report: In a morning briefing, the Pentagon announced that it had accidentally sent sensitive technology used in the US nuclear program to Taiwan.
The devices were returned to U.S. territory this morning.
Watch a portion of the briefing HERE.
At the briefing, Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne said the Defense Department learned last week that "four non- nuclear nose cone assemblies and their associated electrical components" used to ignite a warhead in an intercontinental ballistic missile were mistakenly sent to Taiwan in lieu of a sales order for a battery shipment.
The fuses only work on the Mark-12 weapons package/warhead and are not nuclear, but are electrical fuses. Wynne said they are "the electrical firing mechanism that allows the rest of the system to detonate."
Wynne said the assembly 'does not contain any nuclear or fissile material'.
Taiwan notified the United States that they sent the wrong items. Informed of the mistake, the military immediately ordered a Navy cargo ship to pick up the devices and return them to the U.S.
Ryan Henry, a senior adviser to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, said "all our dealings with the Taiwan authorities have been up-front, and they have in no way tried to be uncooperative in any sort of way."
Henry described the shipment as "a system that was built and designed in the '60s, and so theretofore the technology that is in there is quite dated."
Still, he said "we're taking this extremely seriously, and we feel quite confident we'll be able to determine if there has been any tampering or exploitation."
Concerned about how China will take the news, Henry went to great lengths to say that China had been quickly notified and that the shipment was an "error" and a "mistake" and was in keeping with US defensive military sales to Taiwan. "This specific incident was an error in process only and is not indicative of our policies, which remain unchanged. Our policy on Taiwan arm sales have not changed."
Henry said that both the Gates and the president were notified on Friday of the shipment mistake and the actions in place to recover it.
Said Henry, "The department will determine the facts and take appropriate corrective action regarding this regrettable incident. " He also said that Gates has made the incident a "personal priority." .
Gates has also ordered the Air Force and the Navy "to conduct a comprehensive review of all policies, procedures, as well as a physical site inventory of all nuclear and nuclear-associated material and equipment across their respective programs."
The investigation will be headed by Admiral Kirkland Donald, director of the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.

Strange, I dont remember so many incidents like this under past Presidents' watches. This is certainly not the first indication of possible wrongdoings by contractors or even government personnel that could provide benefits to potential enemies of State. I dont think it is incompetence as much as intentional actions. Unfortunately, we the public will never know the truth or real details.

How in the world do you make a mistake like this one
Posted by: Bishop | Mar 25, 2008 12:26:25 PM
At lease they didn't send them to the other China.

So what Clinton sold nuclear technology to China back in the mid 90's. Administration have been doing this for YEARS. This was no mistake, it was buisness as usual.

I guess the U.C. try to sell nuclear-weapon to Taiwan or test the China spy-system,but fail,so they publish that news~~there must be some connection between the China spy case and this "MISTAKE"~~~~BECAREFUL next time or WW3 will break out~!

Doesn't it give you a warm fuzzy feeling to know how safe and secure our government and DOD is keeping us? We don't need to worry about terrorists making their own bombs, we will soon be sending the bombs to them. What is happening to our defense system? It is just about as whacky as GWB is and that's pretty whacky. They say it trickles down from the top, boy they are right. GWB is stupid and so goes the rest of our government.

The U.S Air Force is becoming a joke..Last year we had 6 Nuc's loaded on a B-52 and flown over the entire U.S...OOPS Big Mistake..Now we send Nuc war heads to China..IS ANY BODY IN CHARGE??? It cant be BUSH because he is not in charge of himself..I bet CHENEY and HALLIBURTON were involved in this caper..299 more days of the criminal enterprise..

From all articles I've read, USAF didn't even know these 4 fuses were missing until Taiwan called and asked USAF to come and pick it up. I would be nervous to think how many other shipments went out to other countries that didn't bother to call us.. The "Commander Guy" is right in his comments, "At lease they didn't send them to the other China." because I don't think the other China would have called USAF about the mistake. The current administration has been one embarrassment after another.... Just a few more months... Can't wait.

How is this possible? They ordered batteries and got missle heads?? What jerk packed the box? This is frightning.

We have the best contractors working for our government that $ can not buy..

Being from a family that has worked at Los Alamos Nationl Labs in NM associated with the weapons programs,
I guarantee these micro switches did not get confused with "batteries" as they are not stored near common parts in inventories. Only one contractor makes those switches and all nuclear related items are stored safely and accounted for daily. This is obviously someone trying to pull a fast one, my guess is they screwed up on the address for delivery, not on the contents shipped. I would like to know who they were being sold to and by whom.
This is Treason.

When the government make mistakes like this, why wouldn't Americans like Jameriah Wright speak out about it? Its sad that the government want other countries to give up the nuclear weopon but continue to mishandled theirs. Hearing things like this makes me sick.

If she misspeaks when she is sleep deprived, how can we trust her on the phone at 3:00am? No excuses Hillary.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR SOME "ACCIDENTS", AND I DON'T THINK IT WAS AN ACCIDENT. ANYONE WITH THAT KIND OF JOB HAS TO SMART ENOUGH "NOT" TO MAKE THAT KIND OF "ACCIDENT", UNLESS THEY HAVE "LOWERED THE STANDARDS" AGAIN FOR JOB QUALIFICATIONS. MAYBE THE PEOPLE WHO WERE IN CHARGE OF MAKING THIS "ACCIDENT" SHOULD BE GIVEN A POLYGRAPH TEST. IT COULD HAVE BEEN INTENTIONAL. I USED TO BE A GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE AND I KNOW THAT THERE ARE STRICT RULES FOR HANDLING IMPORTANT ISSUES AND SOMEONE IS SUPERVISING TO MAKE SURE THINGS ARE DONE RIGHT.........DUH!!!! HAVE THEY DONE AWAY WITH THESE IMPORTANT STANDARDS OF SAFETY?? MAYBE THE GOVERNMENT DIDN'T MEAN FOR THESE MISSILES TO GO TO TAIWAN, BUT SOMEONE DID.......(ACCIDENTS LIKE THAT JUST DON'T HAPPEN PEOPLE).
Posted by: DeHart-Starr | Mar 25, 2008 3:28:57 PM
yea, someone just got caught again. these kinds of mistakes just DON'T HAPPEN, IT'S NOT JUST AN ACCIDENT
Posted by: Deborah Driver | Mar 25, 2008 4:27:09 PM
They didn't need to send them to communist China because they've already stolen all our secrets.
As for this shipment to Taiwan, I doubt it was an accident. More likely they just took the shipment back after the recent election that put a pro-communist-China government in power.

Some four star needs to become a retired 3 star mighty quickly because of this goof. This is beyond negligence. This could start a war. China and Taiwan do not get along famously. We do not need to send any missle parts to Taiwan. We need to hold people accountable.

Is it any coincidence that 3 days ago Taiwan elected a pro-China president by a 58% majority? Maybe the pro-China president learned of the sensitive technology that the US wanted to share with the previous government and intentionally made the return of these materials a "public" matter. Face it, these fuse systems were sent to Taiwan in 2006. The Pentagon would have us believe that since then the pro US Taiwanese government has been trying to figure out that these things were not batteries until a few days ago? Come-on... Taiwan is moving closer to China for economic reasons and thought they'd embarass the US by revealing that we were sharing this sensitive "nuclear" technology with the prior government.

There are NO mistakes..............

The Taiwan government has been telling the Pentagon for months they had these fuses in letters and email and nobody listened..And all Cheney can say is "SO"..
Posted by: Pat M | Mar 25, 2008 8:57:38 PM
Mistake? I doubt it. Bill Clinton “gave” sensitive nuclear information to a group of Chinese businessmen just after they made “donations” to his campaign. Same folks that donated money to Hillary. Last year China tested several missile delivery systems, shooting some of them over Japan and some over Taiwan. Since China is getting more aggressive I’m sure the “mistake” was made to either let China know we intend to help Japan and Taiwan or the shipment was announced as a mistake after the Chinese found out about it.

The incompetence of the military lately is incredible no wonder they cant win in Iraq, they can't even keep up with equipment.
Posted by: Christopher | Mar 25, 2008 9:28:48 PM
This was not an accident, the US has just told China that Taiwan now has NUKES, an to keep their island dreaming minds OFF!!! What better way to say NO.

Oh well, that's kool. Mistakes happen.

mistake? how ridiculous it is !

Eventually we will have to repay China billions of dollars we borrowed from them for the Iraq war. Those missles could have been the first installment payment.

Dan ..China??? China is the one lending us money, you should be on your knees thanking them, just like Bush.

Those four Mark-12 "nose cones" are not
just "fuses" they are MIRV re-entry vehicles. The fuses attach to each individual warhead within the Mark-12 housing. They weight hundreds of pounds.
They are about six feet long and 22 inches in diameter, not 22 inches long.
What are these guys talking about?
Notice they do not say if any high explosives were present.

i know it is boring, however, we do have to and must get along, because we are so little, so small in the scheme of all things...and actually, we, me, i, you, all have something to offer as the solution for all these stupid, irresponsible, greedy mistakes that have been made for generations...SO - one thing: don't mistakenly send nuclear components to those who are neighbours, and are afraid of each other!!!...is that rocket science? - i don't think so...well, perhaps, i am wrong...apparently it is rocket science, because, for the love of all, we act as we cannot understand this very simple equation...we are quicker, more brilliant, more complete than any machine that has ever been built...if i were to say to you: do you remember when...???...when you had your first... who knows whatever...you could go back to that quicker than you can retrieve information on line...!!!...i love that about being human...we have all of our intelligence at our disposal/retrieval at any given time, moment...and we definitely know what is not right and what is right..for our survival...anyway, prove me wrong if you can..am open to suggestions...
