Clinton Reminded About Husband's Affair in North Carolina
April 18, 2008 10:55 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper writes: Sen. Hillary Clinton was posed with an awkward comment from an audience member as she took questions Friday evening in Winston Salem, N.C. A woman stood up and said, “Hillary, I love you. I always have and I always will. I felt so sorry for you when Bill had his affair.”
The audience reacted with noise and chatter, while Clinton reached for her glass of water and took a big gulp. “I believe now that the best way to overcome it is to become president,” she said.
The woman then asked Clinton who she would pick as her running mate. Clinton ignored the first part of what the woman said – and then answered that it was premature to speak about a running mate. The subject of her husband’s affair has never been posed to the senator in this manner before.
Clinton shared the stage with Maya Angelou, who praised Clinton – and acknowledged that her daughter supports Sen. Barack Obama but voiced her own support for the former first lady. Clinton reminisced on stage about their long friendship, and her admiration of Angelou’s work.
Angelou read a tribute at the conclusion of the rally that she had written for Clinton and said she wanted Clinton to think about this when the polls or people say one thing or another about her and ask her why she doesn’t give up. Angelou read, “You may write me down in history with your bitter twisted lies, you may tread me in the very dirt but still like dust, I’ll rise. This is not the first time you have seen Hillary Clinton seemingly at her wit’s end. But she is always risen, always risen. Don’t forget she has much to the dismay of her adversaries and to the delight of her friends risen.” Clinton gave Angelou a big hug after the prose and the meeting.
Clinton will return to North Carolina soon, as Angelou announced. The senator, however, will be spending all her time from now until April 22 in Pennsylvania focusing her efforts there.

I'm not a Hillary supporter but... how horrid for her to have to respond to such an ignorant statement. Maybe the woman in the audience really does love Hillary but her lack of common sense and tact is just appalling.

Maya Angelou is a great woman and so is Senator Clinton. I am grateful to them both for all the good things they have done in the world.

Like so much else, history is topical. Senator Clinton knows that. She made her peace on this subject a long time ago, so other than wounding her, it isn't going to get much reaction from her.
On the other hand, I am very impressed with Maya Angelou's continuing support for her. It says much about both of them.
Say NEXT With Shrugs. :-)

“You may write me down in history with your bitter twisted lies, you may tread me in the very dirt but still like dust, I’ll rise."
So well put. Hillary has been attacked with such bitterness and such twisted lies. But so often in our nation's history, those who later go on to accomplish truly great things must first overcome huge obstacles placed in their way. The degree to which she is being tested and survived shows the caliber of this extraordinary person and the great things she will accomplish as our president.

I second it. TWO brilliant and classy women. Obama giving Hillary the finger at two different rallies in North Carolina speak to his deep character flaws.
Pennsylvania, we NEED YOU TO GET OUT THE VOTE.

I support Obama...but I think that supporter was not very bright for asking that question.

I'm not only NOT a Hillary supporter, I blasted her earlier today on another blog for something she said.
But that said, I have to agree with Saramee... I'm saddened, DISGUSTED, to see Hillary have to face these kinds of comments. There are a lot of things that are legitimate points to criticize Hillary (and all of the candidates) on, but come on people, don't keep throwing that in her face. And anyway, she handled that difficult time with such grace!
Maya Angelou is just beautiful to her very core. Woman to woman, again putting politics aside, Hillary is blessed to have such an intelligent, strong supporter like Maya in her corner.

Oh, wah, Obama, frontrunner, doesn't like to be in the mud or answer questions. What a crybaby. NOT what we need for a president.
Posted by: al | Apr 18, 2008 11:33:37 PM
For once at a debate, Obama as the frontrunner, is given some tough questions. And Obama is trotting out his sob squad. "It was a rough debate", "this was the old politics", so terribly unfair. "I'll just brush it off." Clearly, Obama's strategists decided early on that instead of answering any tough questions they would just have him respond, "that's just the old politics". It's extremely clever as a reflexive way to dodge any accountibility for what you say or what you do. Didn't we just live for 8 years with a president who thought he was above the law and above accountability. Why in the world would we want to submit to that kind of style leadership again??

Obama and his supporters need to grow up. They can dish it out, but sure can't take it.

Maya couldn't have said she wrote that prose for Hillary....."and still I rise".She wrote this poem in 1978,way before Hillary became a blip on the national scene. So nice try,but no cigar!!!

Maya Angelou supporting Hillary is praise indeed!
Hillary is the only candidate fit to become President!

Its not like the woman is braindead for cripes sake. Women want to know about these things and how else do you find out how to deal with them unless you ask? Who would be more equipped to answer such a question? For instance a psych or a woman who was under the stress and pressure of being the wife of the man who was running an entire country? Truthfully why don't they dig up all of the dirt about everybody? Wouldn't it be more honest to be so than to hide trash behind a "goody goody 2 shoes" smile?

DR Maya Angelou thank you for supporting Hillary.
We appreciate it.

I just saw that Barack Obama drew a crowd of 35,000 in Philadelphia, PA -- that must be some record.
Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 19, 2008 1:19:24 AM
I was going to vote for Hillary on Tuesday, but after that debate she just strikes me as dishonest and ugly and now my husband and sons are all going to vote for Barack Obama even though I wanted so much to give her a chance. On Tuesday it's 5 more votes for Obama in PA.

Moral of the Debate: If Sen. Obama becomes the president he will turn out to be even worse than President W. George Bush!

...so when the media starts talking about how Obama has "the African-American vote," down gulp down this divisive lie... remember this moment.
It pains me to see our country polarized by misconceptions of monolithic support for any candidate. I love Maya and she is supporting Hillary and I support Obama.
I love it!
