Clinton Reminded About Husband's Affair in North Carolina

April 18, 2008 10:55 PM

ABC News' Eloise Harper writes: Sen. Hillary Clinton was posed with an awkward comment from an audience member as she took questions Friday evening in Winston Salem, N.C. A woman stood up and said, “Hillary, I love you. I always have and I always will. I felt so sorry for you when Bill had his affair.”

The audience reacted with noise and chatter, while Clinton reached for her glass of water and took a big gulp. “I believe now that the best way to overcome it is to become president,” she said.

The woman then asked Clinton who she would pick as her running mate. Clinton ignored the first part of what the woman said – and then answered that it was premature to speak about a running mate. The subject of her husband’s affair has never been posed to the senator in this manner before.

Clinton shared the stage with Maya Angelou, who praised Clinton – and acknowledged that her daughter supports Sen. Barack Obama but voiced her own support for the former first lady.  Clinton reminisced on stage about their long friendship, and her admiration of Angelou’s work.

Angelou read a tribute at the conclusion of the rally that she had written for Clinton and said she wanted Clinton to think about this when the polls or people say one thing or another about her and ask her why she doesn’t give up. Angelou read, “You may write me down in history with your bitter twisted lies, you may tread me in the very dirt but still like dust, I’ll rise. This is not the first time you have seen Hillary Clinton seemingly at her wit’s end. But she is always risen, always risen. Don’t forget she has much to the dismay of her adversaries and to the delight of her friends risen.”  Clinton gave Angelou a big hug after the prose and the meeting.

Clinton will return to North Carolina soon, as Angelou announced. The senator, however, will be spending all her time from now until April 22 in Pennsylvania focusing her efforts there.

I'm not a Hillary supporter but... how horrid for her to have to respond to such an ignorant statement. Maybe the woman in the audience really does love Hillary but her lack of common sense and tact is just appalling.

Maya Angelou is a great woman and so is Senator Clinton. I am grateful to them both for all the good things they have done in the world.

Posted by: Sam | Apr 18, 2008 11:11:36 PM

Like so much else, history is topical. Senator Clinton knows that. She made her peace on this subject a long time ago, so other than wounding her, it isn't going to get much reaction from her.

On the other hand, I am very impressed with Maya Angelou's continuing support for her. It says much about both of them.

Say NEXT With Shrugs. :-)

“You may write me down in history with your bitter twisted lies, you may tread me in the very dirt but still like dust, I’ll rise."

So well put. Hillary has been attacked with such bitterness and such twisted lies. But so often in our nation's history, those who later go on to accomplish truly great things must first overcome huge obstacles placed in their way. The degree to which she is being tested and survived shows the caliber of this extraordinary person and the great things she will accomplish as our president.

Posted by: hopesprings52 | Apr 18, 2008 11:28:21 PM

I second it. TWO brilliant and classy women. Obama giving Hillary the finger at two different rallies in North Carolina speak to his deep character flaws.

Pennsylvania, we NEED YOU TO GET OUT THE VOTE.

Posted by: mj | Apr 18, 2008 11:30:00 PM

I support Obama...but I think that supporter was not very bright for asking that question.

Posted by: bk | Apr 18, 2008 11:30:05 PM

I'm not only NOT a Hillary supporter, I blasted her earlier today on another blog for something she said.

But that said, I have to agree with Saramee... I'm saddened, DISGUSTED, to see Hillary have to face these kinds of comments. There are a lot of things that are legitimate points to criticize Hillary (and all of the candidates) on, but come on people, don't keep throwing that in her face. And anyway, she handled that difficult time with such grace!

Maya Angelou is just beautiful to her very core. Woman to woman, again putting politics aside, Hillary is blessed to have such an intelligent, strong supporter like Maya in her corner.

Oh, wah, Obama, frontrunner, doesn't like to be in the mud or answer questions. What a crybaby. NOT what we need for a president.

Posted by: al | Apr 18, 2008 11:33:37 PM

For once at a debate, Obama as the frontrunner, is given some tough questions. And Obama is trotting out his sob squad. "It was a rough debate", "this was the old politics", so terribly unfair. "I'll just brush it off." Clearly, Obama's strategists decided early on that instead of answering any tough questions they would just have him respond, "that's just the old politics". It's extremely clever as a reflexive way to dodge any accountibility for what you say or what you do. Didn't we just live for 8 years with a president who thought he was above the law and above accountability. Why in the world would we want to submit to that kind of style leadership again??

Posted by: hopesprings52 | Apr 18, 2008 11:45:06 PM

Obama and his supporters need to grow up. They can dish it out, but sure can't take it.

Maya Angelou supporting Hillary is praise indeed!
Hillary is the only candidate fit to become President!

Its not like the woman is braindead for cripes sake. Women want to know about these things and how else do you find out how to deal with them unless you ask? Who would be more equipped to answer such a question? For instance a psych or a woman who was under the stress and pressure of being the wife of the man who was running an entire country? Truthfully why don't they dig up all of the dirt about everybody? Wouldn't it be more honest to be so than to hide trash behind a "goody goody 2 shoes" smile?

DR Maya Angelou thank you for supporting Hillary.
We appreciate it.

I just saw that Barack Obama drew a crowd of 35,000 in Philadelphia, PA -- that must be some record.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 19, 2008 1:19:24 AM

I was going to vote for Hillary on Tuesday, but after that debate she just strikes me as dishonest and ugly and now my husband and sons are all going to vote for Barack Obama even though I wanted so much to give her a chance. On Tuesday it's 5 more votes for Obama in PA.

Moral of the Debate: If Sen. Obama becomes the president he will turn out to be even worse than President W. George Bush!

It pains me to see our country polarized by misconceptions of monolithic support for any candidate. I love Maya and she is supporting Hillary and I support Obama.
I love it!

Hay folks...can you believe this? Rupert Murdoch family is having a fundraiser in Nottinghill, London, for our "champion of clean up Washington influence peddlers" himself; our illustrious reformer Sen. Barack Obama...Rupert Murdoch's daughter Elisabeth Murdoch will host the event...Is our beloved Barack Obama is really the modern version of Faust, did a sell his soul to the Mephistopheles so he can be president?

Posted by: charleychaplin | Apr 19, 2008 1:56:24 AM

What a pile of irrelevant, meaningless opinions.

Maya Angelou was asked to read one of her poems at the Clintons inaugural in 1993. A huge honor at the time for Maya who asked us to "Lift up your faces, you have a piercing need For this bright morning dawning for you".

Unfortunately, instead of giving "birth to the dream", the Clintons gave us a nightmare. Now Hillary wants to fan the sparks beneath the trash heap of our greatest national embarassment.

Poor Maya Angelou. In return for standing up at our marriage to the Clintons, she forever must suffer an asterisk due to her indelible association with these two.

Still, Ms. Angelou will forever be blessed and know for her art, her deep commitment to civil rights, and one of our greatest poets.
The powerful tools of Bill's presidency provided Hillary a political version of the vanity press. The Clintons will carry this curse in perpetuity.

Maya! Don't let these sociopaths use you and your reputation any longer.

I just love to read Obama supporters comments. Most of the people who support Obama can't name 5 bills he has passed in the Senate, nor can they really tell you too much about his record. It also makes me laugh to read people say that Republicans are attracted to him, because its Ironic that he is the most Liberal Senator in the Senate today. If you think McCain is going to be easy to beat, you better think again folks. I live here in Florida, yes, the state that Barack Obama has basically said he doesnt care about. I see more and more McCain signs going up in peoples yards every single day and more bumper stickers. I don't see too many Obama signs and bumper stickers. I do see a lot of Hillary Bumper stickers though. I just find it funny that Obama supporters don't look at the bigger picture: Obama does not win the Florida Primary, and he does not win Ohio's Primary, starting to see a pattern here? Look at the electoral map. We have to either win Ohio or Florida to get the electoral votes to win the White House. Seeing how Obama wants to ignore the voters of Florida, I can't vote for him, and I am a Democrat. I'm telling you, Hillary Clinton is the Democrat to beat John McCain. Obama is a great talker, just wait until McCain gets his hands on Obama. Its going to get ugly folks, and I am afraid to say, McCain will probably be our next President. Republicans that can vote in Democratic Primaries did not vote for Obama because they like him, they voted for him because they know they can beat him, it does not take a rocket scientist to realize that. For me, its Hillary or McCain, I will never vote for someone who does not want my vote to count, and no one will ever change my mind.

Forget the two candidates we should all be upset at ABc's unprofessional manner in which the debates were moderated save the slander questions stick to the real issues that effect all americans but i am glad I now recognize what kind of news organization ABC really is.

thanks abc. these two women (hillary and angelou) and even a few of the thoughtful remarks made by obama female supporters make me proud to be a woman.
i have great respect for ABC for having the courage to stand alone in balancing the coverage and debates that have otherwise been so obiously biased toward obama.

re hillary/angelous - thank you both for showing true strength in standing up to all that's been thrown your way.

to abc - finally at least one msm outlet has the courage to ask the phony messiah a few tough questions. don't worry about the robotic calls/phony spammed votes - that's just the obamakids playing their games. we appreciate you. in fact, you're the only channel we'll watch - take that cnn and nbc/msnbc.

Saw the man in Philadephia and just talked and talked and talked about him and the crowd. Nothing like he's ever seenbefore. I'll vote for him. Give the man a chance. I've got a suggestion for Hillary Clinton's campaign song. Since she's so cold and calculating and manipulative and all I thought: "Lies on the Rocks" would be perfect

Posted by: beetlebum | Apr 19, 2008 4:58:17 AM

If Hillary cant take the heat she should get out of the kitchen. The way that she and her husband treated the interns and other ladies that Bill was abusing was horrible. Her treatment of the White House Travel Dept. was horrible. Hillary has never acted a lady, yet when ever anyone questions her uncouth behaviour, her immediate response is to attack the questioner with how dare you talk about such things.
She should go do something else, maybe she could be queen of Bosnia.

Hillary has said that all topics are fair game in an election campaign. Just yesterday, April 18, 2008, she said Obama was essentially whining about tough questions during the ABC debate (debacle). She said she can withstand anything because of her experience, so I think she should have responded to the woman's comments. The woman was just giving her a taste of her own medicine.

VS,

You said, "Obama wants democrats to forget about Florida and Michigan !!!!!!!"

When Hillary tells the superdelegates to choose her because she has won the biggest states, isn't she telling them to ignore the votes of everyone from the smaller states? Won't voters in the smaller states be disenfranchised is she has her wish?

I know you Hillary supporters are less educated than Obama's supporters, but even an uneducated person should be able to see that Hillary does not want all of the votes to be counted.

I just saw the video of Barack Obama "giving Hillary the finger"....looks like he merely scratched his face. My dad is 86 years old and points with his middle finger...always has...I never took it he was giving me the finger. Find a legitimate argument. Bill Clinton is pulling on his ear while talking..who is he trying to be? Carol Burnette?

When some total incompetants, ruin a thread, it doesn't change the fact that Maya Angelou is an incredible Woman, deserving respect, who endorses Hillary Clinton, the first Woman President!!! Get used to it! It will happen!

Posted by: Di | Apr 19, 2008 8:25:03 AM

From the movie MIB -After K makes a comment about "when you grow up," James responds by slyly rubbing his forehead with his middle finger exposed.

Obama used a scene from MIB to flip Clinton the bird as Will Smith did to Tommy Lee Jones. The black audience recognized the reference.

Spread the word about this dispicable, juvienile, racist act. Anyone have a video of that scene? compare it to Obama

Posted by: geevill | Apr 19, 2008 8:47:09 AM

Thanks for the insight geevill but I doubt with all that is at stake here, Barack Obama wants to appeal to the "black audience" by referencing his feelings towards Hillary Clinton by using hand gestures from a movie. We have all become much too skeptical here.

Posted by: leandersgirl | Apr 19, 2008 8:57:40 AM

Sorry to disappoint you, but Obama also used the "brush off" hand gestures of rap star Jay-Z. Remeber, this was in North Carolina with a large black voting block.

That is the move Will Smith used in Men in Black to flip off Tommy Lee Jones.

In January 1995, Hillary Clinton said of the working class white southerners "Screw em, you don't owe them a thing, Bill. They're doing nothing for you; you don't owe them anything". Now that she needs the white working class vote, she wants you to believe she has this larger than life concern for you. They will tell you anything to get your vote-but what is said (thought to be out of hearing range), in the comfort of their own company...therein lies the truth.

Not an accident.

Barry got off easy. Especially when they didn't press his lie about the liberal questionaire that he filled out stating his support for a ban on handguns. He said he didn't write those answers and there was no follow-up. He just plain lied! Its available for all to see with his very own hand-writing. As for the big rally? They bussed most of those people in. Thats a fact.

I watched the clip of Obama when he "brushed off" critcism. He certainly did give the middle finger in that speech. Try to touch your cheek using only your middle finger. It is not a natural gesture. Frat boy indeed. I am not surprised that MSNBC (the Obama network) hasn't made sensational headlines about that. If Bill Clinton had done that, he would have been blasted-and probably called racist at the same time. The FCC should do something about how much the so called talking heads can swoon over Obama. They made fun of Limbaugh and FOX,(rightfully so) but now look just as bad

I am "well educated" and make more than $50,000 a year. I can tell you what Hillary Clinton would offer as President. I find it rather silly for people to vote or not vote for a candidate based on their spouse or urban legend trivia. When I ask people why they support Obama, I hear "he'll bring change" or "I don't like Hillary". My, what some people consider critical in their decision making. I am continually amazed at Hillary's depth of understanding of the issues. Obama spent one year in the Senate before announcing his aspiration for the Presidency. He has come along way by parroting Clinton. Problem is, what will he do when he has to think for himself and doesn't have other candidates to copy? Oh yeah, that's what his advisors would do. He is arrogant and petulant when anyone dares ask questions that don't allow him to go on about how right he was on Iraq when he admitted at the time of the vote on Iraq that he didn't know how he would vote. Obama, time to grow a pair.

I applaud the questions that ABC posed to BO & Hillary. What matters most in a candidate is their character and patriotism, and questions to that effect have been asked since the beginning of this race. Charlie & George did very well in "trying" to get them answered, but between BO's Ah's and 'You know' they were not answered AGAIN!! Besides Kerry's questions on patritism I cannot think of another candidates' hint of non-patritism. Think we may have waited too late in these primaries to get a 'close-up' of BO, but I hope not and would urge all voters to vote for Hillary for the Democratic nominee.
God Bless America!!!

Washington media establishment, the same people who brought us Iraq war, wants Sen. Obama to be the Democratic nominee; they have been dictating that to the whole country from the beginning and I know it would be a big mistake! I am sure the Republicans are going to make Rev. Wright his running-mate in the fall. Not having won even one major state during the primaries and having manipulated the caucuses with small groups of zealots, but now not in play for the presidential election, Sen. Obama is going to find himself stuck! After the Rezko and Wright scandals Sen. Obama is far more vulnerable to Republican attacks and his diminished debate performance adds to his troubles. The coming primaries are going to demonstrate that fact. Remember, old Ralph is in the game too. If Sen. Obama is the Democratic Party nominee, that will be end of story for Democrats. With all due respect for Sen. Obama, I don’t think he can win without the support of working class and rural American voters, Latinos and older Americans. African Americans and young liberal city voters have never won presidential elections for the Democrats. The best chance of winning the White House for the Democrats is still with Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Clinton is the Best Candidate for the Democratic Party. She is sincere, She loves this country and Will Stand up for this country, Protect it and Defend it. She is Not ashamed to Show her support for this country, in any way shape or Form.

She has the conviction and determination to do what is right for all Americans. She does not label or divide Americans into sections or groups. She is For Americans.

She treats each citizen as an American.
She treats each American as a citizen.

She does not want to bring her religion into the white house, She wants to bring what Is right for America and Americans into the white house.

hey mellissa have you ever read the communist manifesto i'll bet obama has ,and thats the problem with his constant association with ultra far left he has always gone towards people with that thinking and it brings into question what his core beleifs really are.its really easy to learn a script ask any actor and i think obama is a good actor just not as potus.

I am a woman from NC. with an advanced degree and a decent paying job. I was appalled when I saw the speech that Obama gave here in which he flipped off Hillary, and it wasn't just in one speech. For those of you who believe that it was merely a mindless gesture, you are sadly mistaken. Everyone in that audience knew exactly what he was doing and what his meaning was, and I am ashamed that my fellow North Carolinians fell for it. His immaturity, lack of experience, and his inability to lead have always been visible, but his supporters have been blinded by his God like aura. Be careful about putting people so high up on pedistals, when they fall, and he will fall, it will be a thud heard around the world.

Melissa - Is the weather nice where you live? Maybe you should try to get outside and play awhile. All this sitting and blogging can't be good for a child of your age.

Watch out Obama: Allah has his EYE on you!!!

Hillary Supporters,
This particular quote from Maya Angelou is worthy of commemoration as a turning point in the Hillary Clinton campaign. I'm going to end this thread myself, out of great respect for what has been said. If an Obama supporter reads that message and still wants to tell twisted lies today, I will let it stand for what it is. Maya Angelou called it right.

HILLARY SUPPORTERS -- END OF THREAD

She should have been asked about ALL his little outings>>>>>Like she said, "Can't take the heat get out of the kitchen>>>>

It's the elephant in the room. Will a President Hillary subject us all to another Bill philandering/scandal filled White House?! Why isn't everyone asking this question of Stand By Your Man Clinton?

Posted by: dragonlilleth | Apr 19, 2008 12:32:03 PM

Every woman whose husband cheats on her should have the chance to run for president! What a qualification. Especially those who grin and bear it (and I'm being sarcastic here, for those without a sense of humor!) -- if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!

Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!

How becoming president would make her overcome Bill's infidelity? shouldn't her religious belief have helped her forgive and stay in her marriage? No it's her selfish mad desire for power that drives her then. This confirms my belief that it was only for her political ambition that she stayed in her marriage, believing that america has forgiven Bill for the shame he brought to the white house and this nation;therefore he will be part of the prize. But you failed to realize one thing Hillary it's hard to forgive, but forgetting is a whole different matter.

Obama 08!
Yes We Can!

That question was a plant. It was designed to make people feel sorry for her. Just like the fake crying.

It's over Hillary! I used to support you, but now that I've seen how you will do absolutely anything to become President, I'd vote for McCain over you.

OBAMA 2008!!!!!!!!!

The ABC news questioners in the debate did a shameful job. Its OK to ask tough questions, but who cares about dumb questions about your flag lapel pin, a neighbor, Ayers, who has a strong opinion but has nothing to do with Obama, or a dumb question like; "Does your pastor love America as much as you do?" How would Obama know and who cares anyway. What a waste of time. Can we hear candidates comments on real issues please? ABC should be ashamed.
