Bill on Hillary's Debate Performance: 'I Thought She Was Great'

Share

April 17, 2008 1:19 PM

ABC News' Sarah Amos Reports: Former President Bill Clinton was in high spirits this morning as he took to the stage in Erie, Pennsylvania, eager to talk about what he thought of his wife's performance at ABC News' Democratic debate last night in Philadelphia.

“So, I want to begin by saying, I don't know if you saw that debate last night, but I did, and I thought she was great. She was great because she showed the strength and leadership and knowledge of the issues that is very important to the next president, and and she didn’t hedge, beat around the bush on tough questions like Iran, she told us what she was gonna do on Health care, she told us what she was gonna do on jobs. That’s what you want in a president. Someone who is leading for you,” Clinton told the crowd on the campus of Erie University of Pennsylvania.

Clinton went on to sprinkle debate references throughout his 45 minute speech, at one point saying he thought her answer on Iran was excellent as well.  Joining the former president on the stump today is a longtime friend and Hillary Clinton supporter, Ted Danson.  Danson's glowing description of Hillary during his introduction prompted Clinton to remind the crowd that the Hillary he knows is not the one he says has been created by the media and her opponent.

“I couldn’t help thinking – I didn’t mean to start with this but I think I will. You heard what he said about Hillary? That’s what the people who know her think. That is very different than the image that they have tried to create for her, isn’t it, in the media, and out of the other campaign, who are always nagging, nagging, nagging. You heard it for 15 months, you know? How come no one who knows her believes that?" Clinton asked the crowd, explaining that the people who really know her realize she is in it for the people.

Clinton is keeping a busy schedule today with 6 stops in some of the more rural and remote parts of Pennsylvania, including Warren and Lock Haven.

I wholeheartedly agree. I thought she was great too!

There Bill goes lying again. The onlyl reason Hillary did remotely decent is because she was given a pass by the moderaters. Even then she couldn't land a knock out blow. Obama tried to change the subject many times to the real issues in America, but she kept constantly bringing up negatives. It was really very sad.

Posted by: Tiffany | Apr 17, 2008 1:34:59 PM

The idea that Obama shouldn't have to answer for all this is ridiculous. If this had been addressed long ago like it should have been, then Obama wouldn't be facing this now. Where would we be now if only the media had been doing their job and being objective and scrutinizing the man who wants to be our President for goodness sakes.

What more is out there? What else got scrubbed? He is scary.

His Ayers answer...my god. I don't care if he bombed buildings, government or otherwise, 20 years before I was born. If I am wanting to be President (and by the way, If I'm not wanting to be President either) I avoid him, his neighbor, his kindergarten teacher and his dog's puppies like they were the plague.

NOT because I'm running for President but because what he did is heinous and against the land I love.

I don't care if he wasn't punished legally, it doesn't make him not guilty, especially when he admits it, boasts about it and says they didn't do enough and he regrets that.

Just think...Ayers is only ONE issue that Obama needs to answer for.

Also, as long as the slamming is of Clinton, it's ok right? If it had been, all you people all over the Internet would be celebrating, instead of whining.

Come back and vote when you grow up.

I think that Obama did a fantastic job considering that the moderators spent the first 45 minutes before they even asked him any policy questions. They basically attacked him the entire night, and then they got the nerve to say that he was defensive. Of course he was. They asked Hillary one question regarding Bosnia, and then moved on to another attack on Obama without even getting into the fact that she lied. They never brought up the NAFTA issue and the fact that her husband accepted $800,000.00 from a trade deal with the Columbians that she states she’s against. That’s like my wife saying she’s anti-police, and then me excepting a big payday to pad “our” bank account. They never brought up the fact that her main advisor (Penn) was making a deal with those same Columbians that paid her husband. On the flip side they managed to bring up and hammer the four most negative stories about Obama that has been looped over and over for the past 6 wks. All of the old issues were long put to rest including the Wright thing. This whole thing was set up to keep Obama from talking about the issues and to try and make it a cat fight between the two. What about the $4.00 gas prices, or the rising crime, or the 3rd tour that most servicemen are going thru, or the economy, or the rising cost of college, or the housing market, or the lack of healthcare for the mentally ill. I was disappointed that we’re on the edge of history and this debate was the worst one-sided moderated (attack) debate that I’ve ever seen. It was refreshing to hear Hillary finally admit that Obama can beat McCain. God is good and faithful…

1 tabloid question each candidate from viewers ( sniper fire & flag pin)

3 tabloid questions against Obama (wrihgt + willie? + bitter-gate). 1 came from Sean Hennety (agruabley a neo-con). NONE against Hillary.

And the only audience responses shown (5 times) were from Chelsea sandwiched beteen two Hillary superDel.

Its NOT BIASED only by "biased hillary supporters"

Tom Coburn is the latest to get thrown under the bus by Obama.

Tom Coburn who said IF abortion became illegal, then the death penalty could perhaps be used for those abortionists.

And THAT is what Barack compares to a guy who bombed buildings and now says he didn't do enough????

WOW. And they're a lot friendlier than Barack admits. He had a strategy meeting at his house.

I just want to say as a lifetime Democrate for 49 years, I have never been so embarrassed to be a Democrate till now. Last nights debate was a total joke. Hillary, ABC, Nutter and Rendell did a good job of setting Senator Obama up. It appeared to me that the debate was not about real issues but instead, an agenda for Hillary's benefit. It was obvious that she knew what the questions were going to be and that it was decided to ask her about Bosnia once and disregard all of her other lies, mistatments and cheapshots. She has shown the American people exactly who and what she is. I am tired of her nasty self promoting games and more importantly, I am disappointed that the DNC has allowed her to tear the Democratic Party apart. It was so many times last night where Obama could have torn her apart, instead, he in a sense protected her on Bosnia and tried to deal more with the issues the American people are really concerned with. Instead, she took out her dagger and continued to dig. That is not a sign of a fighter or of strength, it's a sign of sleaziness, desparation and ignorance. Obama is clearly the better candidate. He is morally sound, trustworthy and genuinely concerned about the people. I have donated to his campaign at least twice a month and very proud to do so.

I am tired of listening to politcal analysis twist and turn words around and create massive issues out of nothing! This Primary has stressed me out and I have decided for my own morals and well being, that I will officially resign as a Democrat if Senator Obama is cheated out of the nomination.

I will leave the Hillary circus in November for the rest of you to enjoy and take my chances on the Republican side.

Sadly,

A Democrat on the fence.

congratulations Bill, now that's an unbiased opinion. What you say Hillary "screw them and the middle class workers too"

Posted by: jAYjAY | Apr 17, 2008 1:42:03 PM

I thought she was great too but it seems that the majority of Dems have already made up their minds and no matter how well she does now they will still support Obama. I don't think she is getting a fair chance in this nomination process and that is a shame. For someone so capable they should treat her better. I do think their is buyer's remorse setting in for some of the people who have voted already.

Posted by: GHM | Apr 17, 2008 1:45:47 PM

Shame on you ABC!! I will not EVER watch any so-call debates on your network. This station is TOO bias for me. I will only watch your station to get the lottery numbers. You've really stooped very low on ATTACKING Obama. You must be in Hillary's pocket.

Posted by: DW | Apr 17, 2008 1:46:13 PM

Yes Jo, you hit the nail on the head. "Weak" is the word that comes to my mind when I see him at the podium. Fear is written across his countenance, guilt in his demeanor. I sometimes feel sorry for him because I don't think in a million years he ever imagined the scrutiny he is and will be under. We all have a pretty good idea who is working behind the scenes. Obama is a mere puppet, a sacrificial lamb, a talking-head. Take him off script and he is lost. So will America be lost if we follow him.

Posted by: Bill Elliott | Apr 17, 2008 1:46:36 PM

As the famous saying goes:

"Tell me who you're with and I'll tell you who you are."

That doesn't reflect well for Obama.

Posted by: Jo | Apr 17, 2008 1:46:57 PM

Jo,

You are right.
Lastnight ABC prepared for the GE.
No matter what if Obama want to win the GE he has to face those issues.
His supporters just don't get it.
He can not get all the free pillows anymore ,he has to be tough.

Posted by: crisis08 | Apr 17, 2008 1:47:09 PM

I thought Sen. Clinton was quite wonderful. I think this debate demonstrated how brainy and solidly grounded in policy she really is. At the same time, I was shocked by Obama's performance, which was dull, unprofessional and unprepared. It's as if he didn't care at all and while some of the questions were a little petty, he was evasive and dismissive. Last night helped me make up my mind.

Posted by: Kathy | Apr 17, 2008 1:47:33 PM

It was pretty obvious that Hillary was briefed beforehand on what the questions where going to be.

As for debating, she did not debate. She did not answer directly to any questions. All she did was rehash her stump speech over and over again.

Hillary fanboys can tout her "win" all they want but anybody who is neutral could tell that she came off as petty at best. I'm sure the Super Delegates got a taste of who Hillary Cliton is and I'm sure most made up their mind on this issue.

Face it guys, she is unelectable.

Posted by: Mick G | Apr 17, 2008 1:48:14 PM

Hey ABC,

Don't pay attention to the Kos or Huffington Post people who are bashing you and threatening boycotts.

The Hillary supporters are proud of you for posing tough questions for a change and the McCain supporters are proud too.

There are far more of us than the Kos puppets.

Posted by: Jo | Apr 17, 2008 1:49:38 PM

There wasn't any debate on real issues and there were no winners. This was the worst debate by any means and the ABC moderators did a poor performance.

Posted by: JS | Apr 17, 2008 1:50:53 PM

Why his supporters are all angry now.
Don't they have enough best times for whole times?
It's time to grow up.
If you can not see anything tough on him just watch CNN,MSNBC.

Posted by: crisis08 | Apr 17, 2008 1:51:54 PM

As a former Edwards supporter and a Democrat I am sure the only people who are happy with what happened last night are Republicans and desperate Hillary supporters who should know better. This was not a general election debate and I can't wait to see the new Gallup Poll so you can see what REAL DEMOCRATS think of her performance last night. It was a shameful and pathetic performance.

Posted by: Joanne | Apr 17, 2008 1:52:01 PM

Wait a second. Haven't Obama supporters been saying his positions are 95% the same as Clinton's and the difference is character and electability?

Posted by: geevill | Apr 17, 2008 1:53:53 PM

crisis08 - It was the moderator's fault little Obami looked so bad. Did I say bad? Like a deer in the headlights bad.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 17, 2008 1:54:00 PM

If Bill meant that Hills lies as reflexively as most folks breathe, than Ya she did a good job.

But lying, cheating, kneecapping and a willingness to do or say whatever it takes have always been why so many Hillary Fans love her.

Deep down inside these fans believe Hills will do whatever it takes to screw over the other side..... and they LOVE that.

Posted by: The Commander Guy | Apr 17, 2008 1:56:14 PM

A quote from Obama's past relevant to this debate:

"What's troubling is the gap between the magnitude of our challenges and the smallness of our politics—the ease with which we are distracted by the petty and trivial."

I thought Clinton was awful. I was disgusted by the whole thing, actually.

Posted by: matt | Apr 17, 2008 1:56:16 PM

I think the best thing Hillary did when they talked about Ayer and he said he was only 8 years old and Hillary said he was on the board after 9/11.
I just can not believe it.
He thought he could fool people.

Posted by: crisis08 | Apr 17, 2008 1:58:10 PM

This was the first time that the tough questions that Hillary has been asked, and answering well, included tough questions for Obama.... and now the "Obama-ites" WHINE ! LOL

Posted by: SM | Apr 17, 2008 1:58:10 PM

wow, george and charlie are you working for Fox

Posted by: clay | Apr 17, 2008 1:58:20 PM

Tiffany: You certainly didn't hear that debate accurately. George and Charlie brought up his close friends and underground dogs like Ayers and Ayres. No one knew he had ties to a bomber until it all came out in the news. Now what real American would have himself tied to people that supposedly set a bomb in NY. What person would vote for a candidate like that unless they are anti-american and don't care what happens in this country. Evidently you don't care either.

The ABC moderators manage to turn a potential opportuntiy to generate real discourse on important topics into a demeaning spectacle. Perhaps the most important comment elicited during this tawdry affair was Hillary's assertion that she was willing to extend our security guarantees to countries throughout the Mideast. Astonishingly, this extraordinary comment generated no follow-up despite the significant implications of that policy pronouncement. Why am I not surpised.

Posted by: russell | Apr 17, 2008 2:03:46 PM

Jack: I didn't read anything in your comments about Obama's close ties to Ayers and Ayres, the underground bomber dogs. What about that? I am glad it was brought out in the open and if people in this country after hearing that vote Obama in they don't have any respect for America. He is as racist as can be because his mother brought him up like that as a young boy. Obama hides the fact that he doesn't like white people he uses them for his own advantage and they are stupid enough to believe his lies. Get a grip and wake up.

The debate has served to get Hill in the corner and admit that Obama is electable and that he will win against her good friend McCain in November 08. The debate has demonstrated also that Hill the Bosnian General is unelectable and that was clearly seen in her own body language. Beyond these two points, it was really not a debate which real americans want to hear and to watch, as Obama said it that kind of debate will not put food on the kitchen table for working classes. Hill is poor mentally, the Bosnian General has performed very poorly as usual. She has to discuss her day dream about the Bosnian snipers. Let us wait for Hill's negatives again. This time it will be close to 90%, worse than WBush and Cheney's approval rates. Bill will do everything and say anything to get back in the White House so that the Lincoln bedroom will be a guesthouse again. But a 109 milion + 800 000 from Urube in Colombia couple has nothing to do with real Americans. God bless America and God bless obama.OBAMA08.

Posted by: BKMC | Apr 17, 2008 2:05:04 PM

This debate was the most fair one yet. I liked that the responses were timed, and each were given an equal amount of time. I liked that the questions were staggered, and that they "flipped a coin" to see who would go first on opening and closings. I was impressed that both were challenged with tough questions and not allowed to wiggle out of fully answering.

ABC handled this debate in a very admirable way, and I think both candidates supporters should have been satisfied with the fairness of the debate, for a change. This is how journalists should handle debates. Both got hit with three very tough issues, some of which have been dominating the news. Obama: Rev. Wright, his infamous "bitter" remarks, and his association with William Ayers. Clinton: Her Bosnia exaggeration, her purported statements that Obama was unelectable, and a public opinion poll about her honesty.

For his part, Obama rationalized, made excuses, stammered a lot, and declared the subjects absurd and a distraction from the issues. While Clinton apologized and ate a lot of crow for her "mistakes," describing her trip to Bosnia and got badgered into saying Obama is electable.

Their discussion of the issues wasn't anything all that new; however, Obama did stumble a bit on his position on payroll and capital gains taxes. My main observation is that Clinton was ASKED questions about her positions on Wright and Obama's bitter comments, and she responded, owning her position, while Obama hedged on the Bosnia question, admitting his "campaign" was hammering on it, "of course," yet somehow dodging personal responsibility for what his campaign is doing? That just seemed dishonest to me. If his campaign is doing it - HE is. I'd much rather see the candidates own their positions and actions, than try and appear above the fray, when their actions don't match the perception they're trying to falsely portray.

Posted by: Teri B. | Apr 17, 2008 2:08:20 PM

If those questions were too hard for him last night , wait until he goes to the GE face to face with MCCain.
There will be no pamper, pillows from darling media and his backers.
He has to stand up and defense himself.

i think hillary came off a little more friendly than before but still couldnt help herself but try to do a few under the table jabs about rev. wright and ayers and i think she took a huge slap in the face on national t.v for it when because of the pardons.I think she failed big time when she was asked to get a mans vote back after she lost him to the lies she tells , she was pretty much running around her own words just to prevent herself from having to say i lied im sorry . I think they pretty much said the same thing and didnt change too much. i think people that think she won only think this because she is known for coming out looking worse.

Posted by: melissa | Apr 17, 2008 2:12:52 PM

melissa - 9:15 pm ET: Obama is trying to skate around his plans on the Social Security payroll tax. Gibson is right, lots of people make between $97,000 and $250,000, and their taxes would go up. Nobody wants to favor a tax hike, but Obama may be ceding the high ground of intellectual honesty by not calling this was it is.

Obami tax hike? You wanna talk about it?

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 17, 2008 2:14:36 PM

BXMC,
The debate put Hillary in the corner? Are we talking about the same debate, where even on Daily Kos, Obama Kossack supporters are even admitting that Obama did a lousy job and they are starting to worry out loud about Obama.

That being said, there is already fallout about the debate hitting Obama. Obama said in the debate he barely knew Ayers. Fact checker at MSNBC just posted an article indicating that in fact, Obama attended a fundraiser at Ayer's house, along with Bernadette Dohrn. Remember Dohrn, she is famous for publicly saluting mass murderer Charles Manson, using a satanic salute.

The whole debate was an embarassement of the first order. If Billy is satisfied, I am not surprised. The Clintons are the worse politicians of their generations, liars, deceitful, shameless.
The end result is that she has lost the nomination but would like Obama to lose the election. That is despicable.
As a New Yorker and a woman I will never, never vote for THAT WOMAN in any election, governhip, senate or other.

Charlie and George truly disappointed me. I had so much respect for Charlie before last night. It was clear he was out to show Obama in a bad light. He was rude and should not have been a moderator since he made it apparent who he wanted to "win" the debate.

Posted by: cmzp | Apr 17, 2008 2:19:09 PM

Clinton made a good point about Iraq. For example, a hypothetical Obama supporter living in their parent's basement may do nothing until Mom and Dad say they will kick them out in 60 days unless they get a job and pay room and board. Right now, there is no motivation for Iraq to get tough with thier own people.

Posted by: geevill | Apr 17, 2008 2:19:35 PM

This is front page news? Bill thinks Hillary did a swell job?

After last night's debate, one might have thought that ABC would show some contrition. Apparently, the network is totally in bed with Hillary and won't even try to be objective, even for appearance sake.

A sad day for lovers of the news.

Mr. Obama says that he would talk to terrorist nations like Iran without preconditions, but says that he would not talk to Hammas because they are just a terrorist organization who do not represent a state. Well I think that Hammas was elected in a fair election to represent the Palistinan's! He would talk to the PlO but not Hammas even though they represent them! I guess it is ok to let them use your church bulletin to make their point as long as you don't talk to them!

Dogsoldier: You said it right. Obama gave a bad performance last night and I bet he thought in his mind he was going to win the debate. But it didn't happen that way, he lost. He didn't expect the names of Ayers and Ayres to be brought up in that debate but the public knows now about the underground dogs he had close ties to. Plus attending a racist church for 20 years and has the nerve to say he never heard his pastor preach anti-american slogans and hate for white people. Who does Obama think he's kidding. The white people that vote for him would vote for anyone if that's the case.

George Stephanopoulos is Clinton's former press secretary. Why in the world was he allowed to moderate last nights debate?? HUGE CONFLICT OF INTEREST. What has been obvious for the past 15 months is how biased ABC News has been towards Clinton. I began noticing it on the evening news and then learning about George has solidified the fact that ABC News has Clinton's back just as FOX News had Bush's back. Horrible debate and detestable journalistic standards! This conflict of interest is way more of a news story than why Obama doesn't wear a flag pin. FOR THE RECORD, neither does Hillary!

Posted by: Scott | Apr 17, 2008 2:26:19 PM

TRISHANC...THE POINT IS that Hillary has more baggage than BOSNIA, but none of that was brought up. ABC News is Owned by Disney, who's CEO has filled Hillary's campaign funds with thousands of dollars. The whole plan was to hurt Obama so that the superdelegates would see him in a different light. Rev. Wright is not the real issue. The issue is to keep a black man from becoming president. Clinton is no more qualified than anyone else, but she is white and that is ok with many white people. It does not matter to them if she is a pathological liar. This country is very racist and maybe now was the time for all this to surface so that the children who will be adults in the future will not have to deal with it.

Associations matter and directly reflect on one's judgment, or lack thereof. On the matter of lapel pins, check the Flag Code; no clothing, jewelry, etc. is to be worn in the image of the US Flag. Obama sat on a board with former bombing radical Ayers and for Obama to dismiss this association is repugnant. This is the same audacity and mentality Obama used in regards to his long standing relationship with indicted Rezko. Wright, Rezko and Ayers sure are a group of bottom feeders; so much for Obama's sound judgment. He seems to gravitate towards these types of bottom feeders. Kudos to ABC for smartening up and finally deciding not to continue giving Obama pandering passes. If other media outlets can lambast and go after Clinton with similar battering, who does Obama and his supporters think that that also isn't good enough for him. Obama was finally caught off guard and out of his comfort zone because he was without prepared script and he misjudge the moderators as being passive and pandering to his likes.

Obama supporters are like little grasshoppers who learn from their master. When he gets caught dishing working people he says uses the old trick it's not me it's them! So no surprise to hear his supporters today crying that the reason he did so poorly was not because of the way he handled the questions, not it was because he was treated unfairly! Ah grasshoppers you have learned well, master very pleased!

What made me change from HILLARY to OBAMA was the Question on Social Security. Hillary wants a COMMISSION to fix Soc Security. Obama comes right out and says we just need to RAISE the CAP on earnings taxed from $97,000 to some higher number and not increase the Soc SEC Eligibility Age and not reduce Benefits. And we all know what Commissions do. they split the baby. So under Hillary you could expect some Lower Benefits and maybe a raise in the Age to collet. Its evident OBAMA is more for the People. I'm with him now !!

On top of that Obama lied with the flag pin question, he did state long ago that his is refusing to wear one.

He also lies about his writing on the questionnaire, and dance around the Ayres story saying he was 8 at the time, we all know that but he was an adult when he was associating with Ayres.

BKMC - Ohh, those bad, bad, men at ABC. Weren't you girly men gonna boycott or something?

Did you know Obami was raising taxes?

I was so disappointed by last night’s debate. Instead of focusing on the real issues Americans are facing today, Senator Obama was asked about a FLAG PIN!

What does his wearing/not wearing of a flag pin have to do with his ability to run the country? Seriously?

I've had it with the pandering. I've had it with the media patting us on the head and pretending that they know what issues Americans really want to know about. I've had it with the media feigning shock and moral outrage over non-issues, and treating us like we are all blathering idiots who can't see exactly what they are doing. What about the economy? The housing crisis? The war?

I will still be voting for Obama in the Fall if he is the nominee. However, if he isn't, I can safely say that I will be done with politics for a long time. Not because my candidate will have lost the race, but because I don't want any part of politics as they are being played right now. Politics today have nothing to do with the issues, or what the candidates can really do for this country. It's about God-damning America, sniper fire in Bosnia, and a 100-year war. Politics are nothing more than a game of one-upsmanship, and tearing down anyone who gets in the way.

And the media is just as much to blame as the candidates who engage in these types of politics. Elections are not won by the best candidate, but by the PR firm that can get the media to help them spin non-issues into campaign-crushing issues. It happened in 2004, and it will happen again this year. In the end, it will be the candidate that comes up with the best sound bite, and is better at spinning his/her opponent's words and making them stick, that wins. It won't matter what that candidate actually believes in – just what they (and the media) made the American public believe their opponent believes in.

Bitter? I'm not just bitter. I'm bitter, I'm angry, and I'm done with this game!

Mariann,

You are right.
I guess a lot of people did not know about he related to Ayers and terrorists until lastnight.

BKMC,

Bill Clinton's pardons have no bearing on my vote, but I don't know the details. Were these peopel in jail or hobnobbing in Mr. Obama's neighborhood when they were pardoned?

Wow. Bill supports Hillary? Thanks, ABC, for this insightful report.

BKMC: A profit is never liked in his own country! Hillary has to tell it like it is and has endured attacks from the far right and now from the far left, it is in the middle that she is loved and that is where most americans live! When Democrats run in the middle they win i.e. Bill Clinton, when they run from the left they lose, i.e. Gore and Kerry! It looks like we have not learned our lesson and are gultins for punishment!

BXMC,
Obama Bittergate's negatives are quite fluid as well, hitting 51 today. What matters is not the negatives, though, it is the vote. Obama Bittergate will be crushed in Pennsylvania on this wave of bad news, radical underground ties, etc, and now the debate will be looked at as the turning point. He stumbled, and stammered, and, well frankly, acted like a bit of a fool. Not presidential.

Russell: I read your comments and you are so right. Obama had to think before he answered questions and good for Charlie and George. They stuck it to him last night not like Chris Matthews who is a supporter of Obama along with Shuster who should have been fired. CNN and MSNBC are pro-Obama and have done an injustice to Hillary and McCain promoting Obama all the time.

Ofcourse Bill is in high spirit about his wife. The moderators did the job for them. It's worse than the mafia- ‘mugging, hit job'? It is obvious that this whole affair seemed to be predictive of the headline: that 'Obama kept on defensive ...'!

What passed for as a 'debate' last night was quite outrageously short on substance. The two journalists--Gibson and Stephanopoulos--should be ashamed of themselves for doing such a hack job. This is not to rail against the sharp questioning of Mr. Obama, but the disrespectful interruptions and the relentless biased questioning had no journalistic merit; it also appeared to be tinged with negativity towards Mr. Obama. Even for some lay perso, this kind of tabloid approach to such an important event appear unprofessional and borders on incompetence.

It's laughable for the news media, like NYT to liken it to Tim Russet and Brian Williams’ questioning of Clinton; those journalists were professionals. Or does this have to do with ABC itself--ABC is owned by Walt Disney and its chief CEO is Robert Iger, an influential Clinton supporter. Perhaps a corporate decision was made to do a ‘hit job’. We also know Bill is Stephanopoulos old boss and may have wanted to curry favor with the boss' wife. Generally, it was such a useless debate that we turned off the TV. And I will tell you many colleagues told me that they could not stand watching. Of course, media people want to look the other way and not criticize their colleagues--but this tabloid spectacle must have embarrassed every decent journalist. No wonder people generally have negative view of the media. These two ABC journalists looked like FOX news hacks. Shame! Shame! Shame!

Perhaps this crystalizes more how far the Clintons can go to win. It also exposes what the Clintons are all about. It was actually a turn off for Hillary to be so base.

ABC has never done a sloppier job. First, the candidates were standing all the time instead of sitting, then the questions were trite and so trivial you would think the moderators were paid by the GOP. Sad.

The performance of Charley Gibson and Stephanopolis was disgraceful. Since when does a debate between the candidates become a debate between the candidate and moderator . Gibson especi
