Bill Clinton Glosses Over Obama Statement, Makes Clear His Love for Rural America

April 12, 2008 10:21 PM

ABC News' Sarah Amos reports: Former President Clinton has never been shy about proclaiming his love for rural America. He has spent a majority of the election visting the type of small towns usually skipped over by a presidential campaign. He has been to an airport hangar in Abilene, Texas, an expo hall in Eureka, Calif., and countless small town high school gyms in between.

At a recent event in Indiana he went so far as to call himself a "rural hitman."

But today, as the Clinton campaign launched a full court press against Sen. Barack Obama's comments about rural America, the former president has stayed uncharacteristically quiet.

Clinton made no mention of Obama's comments at his early events, leaving that job to rural North Carolina native and Clinton supporter Tom Hendrickson.

Clinton's first mention of the incident came at his sixth and final stop of the night at a Legion Hall in Jacksonville, N.C.

"Yesterday, Hillary's opponent got into a little bit of trouble by making some comment -- you may have seen it," the former president said. "But the thing that has got me is one more time their side alleged that there was really not much difference how working people fared under me and under the Bush administration. Now if you believe that, I urge you to vote against Hillary."

The mention was so quick that many in the audience seemed to not even really register what he was talking about.

But while Obama may not have been a talking point at every stop today, Clinton's love for rural America certainly was.

"She would not be here today but for rural America. In Missouri, 109 of the 114 counties voted for her. In Arkansas, 72 of 75 counties. In Texas, 230 of 254 counties. A sweep in the rural areas of Ohio," Clinton told a crowd in New Bern, N.C., early this evening.

Clinton went on to talk about rural America's role as the backbone of America and how the caucuses, which have been won mainly by Obama, target upscale voters.

"In February, when she lost all these caucus states -- which favor upscale voters and people with more free time and are less democratic -- they are, right? [Cheers] -- you get one convention delegate for every 2,000 caucus-goers, one convention delegate for every almost 11,000 voters. They are. And all of a sudden, all over America, working people, men and women, in small towns and rural areas, who'd never given a nickel over the Internet, over 300,000 of them sent her $30 million so this campaign could go on. I will never forget that," Clinton said.

Yes Hill and Bill love rural America that is why they have 800 000 of Colombian money in their pocket to ship over your jobs from rural PA, NC, VI to Colombia as they have done for NAFTA. Wake-up rural America if not in 2 years Hill the Bosnian General and Bill will make another 109 millions on our back. God bless America and God bless Obama.OBAMA08.

The Clintons love people a million times more than Obamas ever had or ever will.

Look at what the Clintons have done and compare with what Obamas have ever done.

Obamas have done NOTHING except run for office and now for the Presidency ...

To think that the Obamas care about people in general is pathetically laughable ...

WHERE IS THE BEEF?

So Hillary's strategy is to sweep all the Red parts of all the States. But she gets beat big in the Blue parts of those states.

Interesting thing what Bill has to say.

The Truth is that Hill and Bill only think about themselves. Anyone remember the year 1994?

Posted by: The Commander Guy | Apr 12, 2008 10:59:36 PM

So we now know what Obama tells others behind closed doors: "Typical White People" are ignorant racist bible bashing trigger happy hicks.

May-be it's too late at night for me as I don't usually bring this up, but the headline of this article made me lol!
Aren't Paula, Gennifer, Kathleen, etc. all considered to be from rural America? So of course he loves it! There is not policy reason proving he does - quite the opposite actually.....

Posted by: Paige | Apr 12, 2008 11:02:03 PM

If Bill and Hill love rural america so much why don't they donate to some Farmers charity organization the $800,000 they made from the columbian trade deal Hillary doesn't support.

Obama 08!
Yes We Can!

I'm so tired of Obama trashing the Clinton Administration and lumping it in with the horrific Bush Administration. As a Democrat I am very proud of Bill Clinton's Administration and the incredible period of peace and prosperity he presided over. Profoundly insulting and wrong to reject all the good that was done during the Clinton years. If he thinks those were such terrible years it makes me wonder whar Obama has planned for us should he become president. On the other hand, Obama has embraced Carter and his advisers. God help us.

Many Hillary supporters are saying they will vote for McCain if she does not win. That fits as she is very aligined with the Republicans as noted with her votes on Iraq, support of Nafta, campaign's involvements w/Columbia -
Enjoy your vote for McCain!

Posted by: Paige | Apr 12, 2008 11:07:22 PM

Another truth -
A vote for Obama is a vote for MCCAIN.

Obama cannot win without the 28% of Hillary's supporters voting MCCAIN if Obama is the nominee.

And that 28% is now 33% and growing.

What Republican will vote for Obama?
Few and insignificant, if any.

Posted by: TheTruth | Apr 12, 2008 11:08:39 PM

Anyone remember the Year of our Lord, 1994?

That was the year all the Rural Democrats who stuck their neck out for Bill crashed and burned.

Ya Bill gotts the big love for the red spots on the map.

Posted by: The Commander Guy | Apr 12, 2008 11:09:19 PM

It's sad that so many Americans still think that Bill had anything to do with the economic boom of the 90s. He was lucky to preside over a period of unprecedented technological innovation, but managed to let it slip between his fingers by using the money to obsessively pay the debt instead of investing more into research and development to sustain it.

And his and his wife's "fighter" mentality lost the Dems both the house and the senate. We don't need that again in Washington.

Hopesprings - are you referring to the fact Bill essentially ignored Bin Laden and his opportunity to kill him? Or are you referring to the horrific banking/corporate scandals that proliferated under Clinton's watch. There are numerous WorldCom, Enron' etc. workers who lost their life savings. Shall we chat about NAFTA? The economy was great thanks to the telecom boom.

Posted by: Paige | Apr 12, 2008 11:12:55 PM

Fact: Hillary cannot win any more.

All she can do is damage the Democratic nominee.

A vote for Hillary is a vote for the continuation of scorched-earth politics within the party, and the lessening of the Dem's chances in Nov.

Oh, and if somebody can explain to me how Hill plans to win when 54% of the country has a negative impression of her, I'd like to know.

Whatever Clinton's shortfalling, they have done alot of good as well. They have demonstrated they really care about the average Joe, FAR more than most politicians do. That's right!!!!.

Why should Bill CLinton help out in New Orleans? Why should Bill Clinton help out in Africa? He could just settle back and live very comfortably ..

Bottom line and truth is they DO CARE for the underpriviledged ... It is evident everywhere ... They will go out there and help where they can, when they can and however they can.

Contrast that with Obamas? Where is the beef? NO COMPARISON

----------

Because Bill and Hill LOVE being in the spotlight.

They love the attention, and the media coverage.

They made $109m for themselves, but over $500m for their foundation.

Their foundations pays their planes, their fancy dinners and fancy suits. They get to still travel around the world and meet with leaders and foreign media, and take pictures with poor kids.

The only thing they fear is fading into obscurity.

To all Obama supporters: We Hillary supporters that will vote McCain if Obama is the candidate know what McCain has to offer. The reason we cannot vote for Obama is that we are really concerned of what still needs to be discovered.

Vote the best candidate. And if the best candidate is MCCAIN after Hillary, and if MCCAIN happens to be Republican, then Republican it will be.

Vote America ...
Vote Hillary ...

If Hillary is not the nominee, then vote America ... vote MCCAIN.

Yeah, vote 100 more years in Iraq, and a war with Iran, and the most conservative supreme court you've ever seen, and economic ruin!

YEAH! IF your girl doesn't win, turn on your principles and vote out of spite!

"...you get one convention delegate for every 2,000 caucus-goers, one convention delegate for every almost 11,000 voters..."

that was the system for some time now, more than 20 years. And no one complained. The idea that a system is not good only If it doesn't serve you is wrong and dishonest.

Wheresthe beef - If I had just graduated from Harvard with my law degree with a ticket to any law firm I wanted = WHY would I choose to be a community organizer on the south side of Chicago making in a year what I could in a month had I taken the corporate route?

With hundreds of thousands in school loans, Obama did just that to help the people in the South side of Chicago. There's your beef - would you like a potato too?

The Presidency of the United States is far more important to us than any one party.

Vote America.
Vote Hillary

If Hillary is not the nominee, then vote the next best candidate for the Presidency of the United States.

If that is MCCAIN and if he happens to be a Republican, then Republican will have to be.

Vote America
Vote MCCAIN then (if Hillary is not the nominee)

Fair enough for fair-minded people.

Don't worry, you'll have the whole General Election season to get to know both him and McCain. You'll get to ask any questions you want.

Oh, and if you will still think that voting for McCain, who married into riches, cheats and calls his wife "a c*nt", and changes all of his values in 2 short years (torture, tax cuts, etc. etc) is a good idea, go right ahead!

When my good friend, who is a Japanese American recently took a road trip through rural parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Virginias, when people in the small towns saw him many of their jaws dropped. Little kids pointed at him and tugged their parents' sleeves. Rural America is MUCH different than urban America. It's not thier fault, but when you're surrounded by white people all your life then you tend to be mistrustful of anyone who looks even a little different. It's a simple fact. Anyone who's lived or traveled much through rural America knows this reality.

Obama is a change you don't want to see.

He has nothing but a speech to back him up.

He said he was selling Hope. only cost 1 vote. He failed to tell you Hope is free and he is not refunding votes.

You still trust him today?

Bottom line - if the Democrats insist on their Obama as nominee and if, after all the votes are counted (including MI and FL), and god help us, Obama is ahead ... let the Democrats have their Obama for nominee.

We the 28% just need to do the next best thing per our conscience and our heart ...

Not only vote MCCAIN. We must help MCCAIN win. We must volunteer, We must donate time and money to help MCCAIN all the way to the White House. MCCAIN needs us then.

when all you have is personal attacks of Obama, reminiscing about the 90s, and right-wing talking points, it feels pretty good.

I find it somewhat ironic that Barack would criticize rural America for their anti-trade sentiment when he claims to be NAFTA's strongest opponent.

I find it troubling that Barack would criticize rural America for clinging to their religion during troubled times while he clings to his pastor "What I value most about Pastor Wright is not his day-to-day political advice," Obama said. "He's much more of a sounding board for me to make sure that I am speaking as truthfully about what I believe as possible and that I'm not losing myself in some of the hype and hoopla and stress that's involved in national politics."

I find it sad that Barack would criticize rural America for clinging to their legal guns used for hunting and family protection while he is assuring them that he is pro-gun and will keep the weapons in their hands.

I find it unbelievale that Barack would claim that rural America is "anti-immigrant" when he knows full well that they're actually anti-Illegal immigrant and want secure borders just like Barack does.

I find it a total lie that Obama is saying that Bush and Clinton had the same economic policies and that America fared poorly under Clinton.

Actually the whole incident leaves me "bitter"

Could someone tell Obama that without the small towns in America he won't go far? He is so arrogant that is blinding him to the point that he loses focus of the prize. Could he be any more condescending to the American voters? We the voters deserve more respect, whether we agree with you or not, we deserve respect. Yes economy is bad and yes some of us are angry, but i don't think we are bitter or cling to homophobia, religion or guns to show our frustration. Yes Obama you are soo out of touch with voters. Your only salvation are the rich liberals that want you in power. NOBAMA

Obama's real explanation ...

Brrrrrrinnng! Brrrrrrinnng!

[Barack Obama campaign manager David Axelrod gropes for the red phone next to his bed]

AXELROD: [groggily] Hullo?

OBAMA: David, I can explain. I had a sip of wine and a bite of cheese at the fundraiser and I had an allergic reaction. That's the only reason I said what I did.

AXELROD: [fully awake] Let's hear it.

OBAMA: First let me lay out the narrative --

AXELROD: Can the crap. What did you say?

OBAMA: Remember one of those little fundraisers in San Francisco last week? I um said some things that the Clinton and McCain camps will try to spin as my being against small town America.

AXELROD: [raising his voice] What the -- what did you say?

OBAMA: I said -- look, you have to understand the context of my remarks and how this combined with my allergy.

AXELROD: [screaming into the phone] WHAT DID YOU SAY?

OBAMA: Listen, let's not worry about what I said. I'm calling to let you know my remarks were tape recorded and the Huffington Post just published them.

AXELROD: Was it a spy from the Clintons?

OBAMA: Uh, no, it was one of those old white ladies who follow me around the country. She's a supporter, maxed out her donations to my campaign, I think. But see I think she's from a small town. And she blogs.

[David Axelrod frantically punches buttons on the red phone and sets up a conference call.]

JEN PSAKI and TOMMY VIETOR, Obama campaign spokespersons [in unison]: We hear and obey!

AXELROD: Listen carefully: You cannot confirm or refute the remarks attributed to Barack Obama at a fundraiser in San --

JEN and TOMMY: That will be hard, sire! The audio is clearly his voice.

AXELROD: [yelling] YOU CANNOT CONFIRM OR REFUTE. If Clinton and McCain say anything about the remarks, talk about McCain's cruelty to the middle class and Hillary's stupid proposals. DO YOU UNDERSTAND? NO DIRECT REFERENCE TO WHAT OBAMA SAID!

[Axelrod punches more buttons on the phone.]

SUPERDELGATES IN UNISON: Yes David!

AXELROD: Tell me exactly what the twit said. Uh huh... Uh huh... Uh huh... Whaddya mean there's no way to say the remarks were taken out of context?

SUPERDELEGATE: Evidently he used the occasion to present a thesis that if small town Americans just had better jobs and pay, they wouldn't need to take refuge in religion and guns and be xenophobes.

AXELROD: If you get a call from the Lou Dobbs show to appear and comment on anything Obama said about anything, you have the mumps. Understand? [slamming down the phone receiver] Next time I use a professional actor for the presidential run.

The Clintons comedy act that has gone tragically bad. They can't find way to use this with a straight face. Yes, we known how Bil loves rural Americans (women). No doubt about, Hillary will try to find a way to lie about this situation when she does not have to. Despite her dangerous travels, only thing that makes her mad, she didn't invent the lie.

Paige: Thank you. You are correct. However, you forgot to mention other parts of the article, like: "Advisers to the Clintons said the family foundation amounted to only a fraction of their overall charitable efforts, which generate millions each year.

The charity is separate from the New York-based William J. Clinton Foundation, which has directed $10 billion in corporate money and resources toward slowing the global spread of AIDS, addressing climate change, and reducing hunger and poverty in developing countries."

Obama didn't want anyone to know about his little soiree amongst the millionaire elites in San Fran.

Now not only do we know about it, now we know how he feels about basically the rest of America when he feels free to speak his mind amongst his fellow Ivy League educated peers.

Stick a fork in Obama - he's done.

OOoohh the Messiah will rise to the sky. The messiah will rise from the ashes. The messiah always says in his speeches "when i am president i will..." talk about entitlement. PA give this loser of a candidate a non refundable one way ticket to Illinois.

suv2001: This type of unsupported diatriba does not help your candidate. Your personal insults do not help him. On the contrary you are demeaning him. If you believe in your candidate, try enumerating his qualities instead of insulting his opponent.

Hey everybody, it's time for bed. Gotta get up early and go to church to meet all of my fellow bitter, gun toting bigots! See ya tomorrow.

DCS - I am not going to copy and paste the whole article. I can't stand it when people do that. You had made that point so I gave you the counter-point. We're both right and that really is okay....

TCG,
I posted on your blog. I guess I was wrong, you are willing to enter the fray. Couldn't be a more embarassing moment for Obama, as he his "bitter" remarks continue to grow in momentum. I heard one analyst describe the degree he is out of touch as "breathtaking". Like I said to you, in only a few words Obama has pumped air into the Clinton campaign good enough to fuel them with oxygen for a slow trip to the moon and back.

It's great being WestCoastMessenger.

WCM- You must be watching FOX as CNN and MSNBC have not been as kind to your lady.

Paige,
Really, I just looked at MSNBC.com and they are featuring the Obama blunder. Also, you left out CBS News. Checking CBSnews.com, yep featured. Now let's turn to CNN.com, the Ted Turner invention, remember Ted Turner, married to Hanoi Jane, well big surprise, not even mentioned. I guess you have to say they are not biased, right.

I just cannot believe that, what's the guy's name, Keith Blabberman, his channel is torqueing Obama? What's the world coming to?
========================================
Obama and CNN, Team Howdy Doody!
This is Obama's yeeeeeeeeeeoooooooooooowwwww moment!

Clinton is yesterday. From another time and another President that divided America and divided the world. I know. Many of you will tell me, as you have, that this election has nothing to do with us foreigners. That it is all about America. The American choice. The American future. And you are (mostly) right. This is your choice. This is about the American future. This is about America. But it does have something to do with us Johnny Foreigners. We do have a stake in this. Why? Because most level-headed people in this world still look to America for direction. We still look up to America. We look for guidance. We look to America for leadership in this crazy little sphere of ours. Question is, can America still provide it? And who offers that hope? http://angryafrican.net/2008/04/12/note-to-america-the-world-is-watching/

"The Clintons love people a million times more than Obamas ever had or ever will."

Obama has done NOTHING, only spreads HATRED among the people.

Hillary '08!

Angry African,
Actually YESTERDAY would be the day that Obama spoke to a San Franciso audience, while ramming his foot into the bottom of his esophagus. We've had eight years of the current President doing the same, so get used to it Bucko.

Same people saying the same old things in every blog. You won't change the Hillary hater minds and you won't change the Obama hater minds. I think all the bitter people in America are on these blogs - especially the Obama supporters. Every politician lies and spins things the way they want them. And those who love them, will think whatever they say is gospel. What scares me is the Obama supporters who put Obama up on such a pedestal - and from what I've heard from Obama, he puts himself up there. America is going to be pretty disappointed to see the real Obama if he becomes PUTUS.
