Bill Clinton Honors MLK, Says Hillary's Road to White House Never Easy
April 04, 2008 3:46 PM
ABC News' Sarah Amos Reports: If it's Friday, chances are you can find Bill Clinton in North Carolina.
The former President traveled to the Tarheel State for the third Friday in a row, telling the crowd in Monroe, "I just talked to Hillary on the phone and she told me to say hello and she's sorry she's not there. And I told her she could send me to North Carolina every day from now til the election. It'd suit me fine. I like it here."
A USA Today article on Thursday speculated the Democratic race could come down to the voters in North Carolina, who head to the polls on May 6.
Clinton focused heavily on the issue of equality in America in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
"Because of the life I have been fortunate enough to lead, this is a day when it is a little bit difficult to give a traditional poltiical speech becaue it is the 40th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King," Clinton told an audience in Laurinburg, NC.
"Dr. King's first great mission, to let us all be judged not by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character has come a long way. We are going to nominate for president and, I believe elect as president, either the first African-American man or the first woman in the history of this country. We have come a long way on that mission. On the other hand, on the second mission, making a more equal country -- where poor people all have a chance to work their way into a middle class lifestyle and have stable families and raise their kids to live their dreams and being the world's major force for peace, we've got a long way to go," continued Clinton.
Clinton spoke about his memories of the night Dr. King was killed as well as the months after, when King's dream of the Poor People's March on Washington, DC occured.
"There were thousands of people camped out on the Washington Mall when I graduated. I remember going there and walking up and down and seeing people in the tents and visiting with them from all over American," recalled Clinton.
Clinton gave a nod to all three candidates -- Sens. Barack Obama, D-Ill., John McCain, R-Ariz., and Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., all of whom visited and spoke in Memphis, Tennessee, on Friday -- explaining that no matter who the American people elect we will end up with a historic president in the White House.
Clinton also admitted that he never thought the road to the Democratic nomination would be easy for his wife.
"Early in this campaign, in deference to and as a great compliment to Senator Obama about a year ago or more I said, 'Hillary, the conventional wisdom in the press is that you can't lose the primary and you can't win the general. As usual, they are wrong. You may not win the primary because you are going to have a hard time doing that. But if you dom, I predict you will be elected president handily,'" said Clinton.
Clinton, as during his past two visits, received warm welcomes from local Carolinians. He did find one young man with a hand-made Obama sign who wasn't as welcoming in Lauringburg.
"Hey, it's ok, you can hold up your sign. I don't blame you for trying getting publicity on our nickle, it's good. But wait a minute, you decide whether I'm right or he is. That is what elections are about. Ok?" Clinton told the crowd, who clearly didn't appreciate the pro-Obama sign.

You're right, Bill. Conventional wisdom usually is wrong. The media's ineptitude at gauging America's true attitudes has been staggering during this presidential primary season. The media has soft peddled the Wright scandal, as if it isn't a real concern for voters. The media also minimizes Obama's countless lies about Rezko, NAFTA, Rev. Wright, his fathers flight vis a vis the Kennedy's, et al. Conventional wisdom says he'll win the democratic nod, but the coming primaries, and the superdelegates may well say something else.

Perhaps this is a good day to say I have a dream as well. That Hillary Clinton would get fair treatment from the Press not because she is white or a woman but because she is an American. Only as fair a treatment as Obama. But that's only a dream.

Let's be fair and have a dream for Hillary to win this nomanation media.
Media all of you are the one that's running this presidental nomination.
Be fair. She can win if the media will
stop.

Dogsoldier and Emily, I agree. The press has been awful toward Hillary playing up every little misstep and scurrying over Obama's real negatives, such as Rev. Wright, Michelle's attitude, Rezko ties, etc. McCain too has been treated with kid gloves. I have lost faith that a Democrat will be elected. I think the press is setting up Obama for a real ugly turn if and when Hillary is out of the picture. Then they'll be talking about Obama's lack of exlperience, his liberalism, and his unsavory ties with controversial preachers. McCain will be cast as middle of the road and experienced. I can see it all in the crystal ball!

Two-cats-What does equal mean to the press? Or fair? Or balanced? Or even REPORTING the news? Or vetting? Maybe even vetting BOTH candidates? But I did say my dream was just that, a dream?

I am grateful for all of the progress that has been made in America, due in part to MLK and his message. I can recognize that we still have a long way to go, but I am hopeful that we will succeed.
I DO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT THE MEDIA BIAS AGAINST SENATOR CLINTON HAS BEEN MONUMENTAL AND I, AS A WOMAN, AM TRULY OUTRAGED AT THE INJUSTICES THAT SHE HAS HAD TO FACE DURING THIS PRIMARY. WE MUST AS A SOCIETY SPEAK OUT AGAINST THIS, even if you support Obama, because it is unjust and unfair. If the media biased was against Obama because of his skin color, as it is against Hillary because of her gender, I would be equally as outraged. For a free and just America, all must be treated equally.

Andrea-You do realize what you wrote is only a dream as well, don't you? Here in the real world we both discuss today words like fair and equal and injustice is only as good as what and how the press decide what those words mean in action. And up to this point in time it is the very press who is supposed to guard those freedoms such as freedom of choice have instead taken away our right and have chosen Obama for us.

WHAT, you mean Bill didn't tell somebody to "shut up" today??? Man, they must REALLY be desperate for votes. I guess he can be muzzled... when it suits him. Let's hope it's a sign for things to come. Way to go Obama fans... you've finally forced Bill to show some class. My hat's off to ya, I salute you.

As always President Clinton has shown his genuine concern for Af-AM and other people less fortunate than he is not only in his word but in his action. Even though his personal judgement may have been lacking in some areas, he has more than made up for those discretions since has gotten out of office. After all he has given 9.5% of his income to charity. When you consider the countless hours of his obviously expensive time that he has given for numerous cause i.e. Aid prevention, Katrina victims, education opportunities, etc, the man has put his mouth and his money where it has helped
millions. This country can find it self in a much worse situation than it is if either Obama or McCain become President. As a Af-Am, I love the idea of a "qualified" black President. Obama is not. Perhaps, he would have been the perfect candidate after the Clinton left the White House but with the corruption, mismanagement, errosion of Constitutional rights, and outright
lack of consideration for the average person other than corporate America under Bush, we need someone like Hiliary who is not afraid to take on the scurilous Reps and get this country up and running again. Can Obama do that? I think not! He has not previous experience. Anyone can sit behind the wheel of a car but in order to drive you have to learn how. Hiliary has lots of driving experience.

All three candidates were invited to Memphis today, but all three did not go, as stated above. Barack Obama chose to campaign in Indiana, once again snubbing the African-American community like he did in Louisianna. And then he compared himself to MLK in his speech. Such arrogance! Martin Luther King was courageous and a man of peace and love. Barack Obama is not even close to resembling this true American hero.

Oh, C´mon guys! Are you trying to say that Obama´s ahead because the media hast been treating him softly? Gimme a break! It is the American electorate that decides, not the media.

Tell the truth, your tuning in to Faux news because Rupert Murdoch has raised money FIR Hilliary and is one of her biggest donors. Don't fear the facts, look it up for yourself. And while your at it, ask yourself why Hilliary has gotten more money from defense contractors than all of the other major canidates COMBINED!!! Hilliary isn't as "liberal" as she proclaims. And if you thin she is gonna end any wars, let alone try to prevent the coming one in IRAN... your dreaming.

It's not easy? Well, DUH there Bubba! Of course its not easy, she is trying to be POTUS and that is not supposed to be a run away. I don't care what she thought it would be! She thought it would be a cake walk. She thought it would be handed to her.......etc.etc. However, this is serious biz here so of course it hasn't been east and it is not suppose to be. However, she is doing a damn bang up job playing the victim to some gullible people. So, she hasn't exactly crashed and burned.
