Bill Tells Crowd Hill Can Win; Checks Will Help

April 15, 2008 5:11 PM

ABC News' Sarah Amos Reports: With the Pennsylvania primary right around the corner, former President Bill Clinton is focusing his attention on the state, and appealing to Pennsylvanians for their votes - and maybe a bit of their money as well. As Clinton travels around the suburbs surrounding Philadelphia today, he is reminding voters that his wife can not only win their home state, but win the nomination as well. I want to tell you this. The last thing I want to say. Anytime you hear somebody telling you you oughta, it's cause they're afraid you won't. Anytime you hear somebody tell you you can't win, it's 'cause they're afraid you will. So I want you to get out there and work for her," Clinton told a crowd in Coatsville, PA.

"I believe if Pennsylvania gives her a big victory she can win this nomination. Let me just say this. Let me tell you this. Anytime

Clinton went on to tell the crowd that they shouldn't pay attention to the fact that Senator Barack Obama is massively outspending Hillary in the state.

"I want to say one other thing. She can win being outspent. The first two weeks of this television campaign she was outspent five-to-one on television. But she can’t be blown out. So the other thing you can do besides vote for her and make calls for her and give the people the reasons I gave you, is if you know somebody that can send ten dollars or five dollars or fifteen dollars on the Internet, tell them to go to Hillary Clinton.com and do this," Clinton asked the crowd.

The need for campaign cash has not been a main focus in the former President's speeches since the days of the Potomac primary states, and more recently, the Texas primary. Today however, Clinton has talked about it at every event, reminding each crowd that Hillary can win even if she continues to be outspent by her opponent.

Surprisingly Absent from Clinton's speeches today, were the now standard references to Senator Obama's comments rural America being bitter. President Clinton did allude to the comment to a crowd in Quakertown, PA, telling the crowd that older American know better than to buy into some of the statements Hillary's opponent has made recently.

"Because once you've reached a certain age, you won't sit there and listen to somebody tell you there’s really no difference between what happened in the Bush years and the Clinton years; that there’s not much difference in how small-town Pennsylvania fared when I was president, and in this decade," said Clinton.

Clinton was joined on the campaign trail today by Hillary supporter and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, who also took a quick second in Coatsville to mention Obama's remarks.

"We need a leader who won't quit, who'll fight for us, who'll stand by us. And you know, there's a lot of controversy about Senator Obama's remarks. And you can take them in any way you can. But I know that Pennsylvanians never quit. We never give up. We're resilient people. And we're proud. And sure, we've suffered some blows, we've suffered some blows. We've suffered some blows, but we suck it up, we work together as a community and we fight back, and we fight back. And we have a candidate who has done just that. Every time they counted Hillary Clinton out, she's fought back, she's sucked it up. And you know what, that's what we need in the White House," Rendell told the crowd as he introduced President Clinton.

Clintons have made 100 million dollars and therefore can spend some of their own money in the campaign instead of just lending it once. Go spend and win if you think that will help.

Vanessa - Define extortion. And as you know extortion is a crime. So, where is the crime?

100 PA Mayors endorse Hillary!!!!!

Posted by: justme | Apr 15, 2008 5:44:31 PM

justme,

Their mayors, not Superdelegates

Sorry to rain on your parade

Posted by: Vanessa | Apr 15, 2008 5:49:00 PM

swuzy - Zeifman said in an interview last week. ... "I am a true Obama supporter." Nevertheless, this claim made by Zeifman is contained in a book he is peddling. And if you believe this then you aught to read the rest of his book and see for yourself. Apparently, the material in his book is not turning out so well.

100 PA Mayors, (Vanessa, yes I said M A Y O R S), endorse Senator Hillary Clinton for President of the United States of America!!!!!

Posted by: justme | Apr 15, 2008 5:53:19 PM

Vanessa - In February 2008, according to a Campaign Finance Institute analysis of the latest official campaign receipts, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) raised 56 percent of his contributions in increments of $200 or less, while Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) raised 52 percent in similar amounts.

Your math is off as usual.

So when Hillary says Obama can't win the General Election, is she afraid that he would?

Posted by: memoryaid | Apr 15, 2008 5:55:03 PM

Are ALL Superdelegates???

Posted by: Vanessa | Apr 15, 2008 5:55:38 PM

Vanessa what superdelegates are you trying to talk about? I am talking about 100 M A Y O R S, I cannot spell any slower.

justme - 100 Mayors ENDORSED Hillary. PAST TENSE. These are mayors that had endorsed before, they just got trotten out again. Oh, and only 19 showed up at the "event".

Taking money from the public and saying Hilly can win with the money Billy boy at it again let him put his bucks in there .,.Swuzy yes, he did and they are still in a law suit in California I went on line and read this but don't ask me where now,she lied so bad they told her no more.

Posted by: h | Apr 15, 2008 5:59:46 PM

That was back in February when Clinton was the "inevitable" nominee

We're in April

On average, Obama donors donate by an average of $90

Which is why he was able to raise more then Hillary in the past 2-3 months

Her donors have maxed out or simply don't want to waste their money

You tell me

Posted by: Vanessa | Apr 15, 2008 6:00:03 PM

If they aren't superdelegates, their irreverent

Posted by: Vanessa | Apr 15, 2008 6:02:27 PM

Vanessa - Mayors are NOT superdelegates. However, some may well be if they were a previously elected official of the democratic national party itself or elected as a superdelegate in the coming primary or were previously appointed by DNC. Maybe one or two will fit that definition, but I doubt it.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 15, 2008 6:02:29 PM

Oh, and they should spend money they get on paying the small vendors all over this country that are owed money first, they are still $8m in debt, not counting the $5m she lent herself.

Posted by: memoryaid | Apr 15, 2008 6:02:34 PM

Look, Hillary supporters:

Hillary has a bit of momentum and Obama is shooting himself in the foot, no doubt about that. But it's too late, that's just the fact. She needs to win 65-35 from here on out to catch Obama. If she doesn't, she'll need to win about 60% of the remaining Superdelegates to catch him. That, my friends, will not happen in this country.

Posted by: Kevin | Apr 15, 2008 6:03:43 PM

Mike in NC

Hahaha. The way it's going, McCain's chances improve with every passing day. Look, regardless of what happens, the Democrats are sure to field a badly wounded candidate in November. They are bloodying themselves up right now and it's a mess. Hillary's wounds are not showing right now because the blacks aren't yet MAD at her. Against McCain she is still pulling 80% of the black vote. If the Superdelegates overturn the pledged delegates and hand this nomination to Hillary, i predict that not even Jesus will be able to get out the black vote for Hillary in November. In fact, in that case, she most likely will even lose her home state of NY.

There is one big difference between us: You bash Obama, but i don't bash Hillary. I only come in here to defend Obama. That's a huge, huge difference. I've said many times that if Hillary wins this nomination fair and square, i will support her. In fact, initially i supported her and donated to her campaign. I don't hate her like you hate Obama. That's a significant difference, and that's why i'm more objective than you. Hate, anger, rage, motivates every comment you make.

BO will NOT be president.

Posted by: justme | Apr 15, 2008 6:11:33 PM

Donna Brazille has publicly said that if the Superdelegates overturn the will of the people, she would quit the Democratic party. I believe 98% of black Democrats feel that way. And folks, they make up 30% of our party. Think about that for a minute. If the Supers take this nomination away from Obama, what would black folks say? They have been the Democratic party's most ardent supporters for decades. Hell will freeze over the day that happens. There will be riots in the streets of America.

Posted by: Kevin | Apr 15, 2008 6:12:52 PM

I am an american first, and if Hillary is not the nominee I will vote McCain.

"There will be riots in the streets of America."

Wow, now that's a threat...

Posted by: Rita | Apr 15, 2008 6:15:11 PM

Dogsoldier

It is true, Obama has serious problems with Hillary supporters right now. But when he wins, i think with time, Hillary supporters will swallow their pride and get behind the man. It will be hard, but not as hard as it would be to get blacks to forgive because Obama, unlike Clinton, would have EARNED it. Getting behind the candidate with the most pledged delegates doesn't seem as unfair as getting behind the one with less pledged delegates, don't you think?

Posted by: Kevin | Apr 15, 2008 6:15:41 PM

Kevin - You mean like the caucuses overturned the will of the people in Texas?

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 15, 2008 6:16:23 PM

Kevin, no way BO will get in the white house. Clinton supporters understand that next to her McCain is best for the country. BO is bad on so many issues, plans, fronts.

Posted by: justme | Apr 15, 2008 6:18:53 PM

Kevin - I think you're wrong on you assessment of Clinton voters. Most of us are centrists or centrists small right somewhat like Webb. We're extremely uncomfortable with the politics of the left and the far left.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 15, 2008 6:19:02 PM

Maybe she can win her NY senate seat again, but other than that - Clinton is a loser.

Posted by: Bill | Apr 15, 2008 6:23:16 PM

Why does the press work overtime to harm the only viable female candidate for President in the history of this country?

The press is not manhandling Obama; he enjoys free access to the press. And he NEEDS it to continue to try and counter all his increasing inconsistencies in style, remarks, honesty and abilities.

Obama pays a fortune for that access to the media. That is why he was back in SF hitting up donors for more money in his recent debauch.

Outspending Hilary 2 to 1 for a minor fraction of a tenuous edge of the vote. One that is in itself a fiction since Michigan and Florida are not being counted. So please don't anyone kid yourself about all that.

Why does it take so much money to convince people to vote for him?

That is a VERY GOOD question. That is the real question that everyone INCLUDING the press should be asking. They won't since they want to stay on track with the gravy train. If there was no burning story about it then the money pot would dry up.

It is by the way the same question his donors asked.

Well it may be the old school rule applies here; you can fool some of the people some of the time but you can't fool all the people all of the time.

The truth is electing obama is about obama not about our country...

Its about him being black, his stories, his book, his minister, his wife, his disatisfaction with our country, his high brow view of himself, -etc...

Since when did being a community organizer become a resume booster for president? Helping out the neighbor folks that relate to you, people who have nowhere to turn and need to rely on you is not a solid performance indicator. Especially when the man doing it already has big political aspirations and ambitions. He was looking for ways to get attention to pad his resume in that regard.

These are all good reasons why we will continue to see a breech in obama's hull. It won't hold water because it is not made of the materials it says it is. The label is disingenuous.

Hilary may not always get what she wants, when she wants it but she does not stop trying or cave in.

What amazes me more than anything is how rude, unforgiving, uninformed and lacking in understanding all the Americans for obama really are. What does that tell you? Birds of a feather flock together. That is spooky. They continue to buy and sell the same bull---- until way past time for the cows to come home. The media is laughing all the way to the bank!$

I agree,

If by some strange miracle Clinton wins the nomination

Al Sharpton, AA voters, young voter, and party elites will march the streets of Chicago

Thats why I believe Obama will get the nomination

The DNC knows what's at stake

All 3 of the top Dem leaders say this will not go to the convention

and we ALL know, if this doesn't go to the convention

Hillary is done for

Justme

That's fine. Go ahead and vote for Mccain. McCain is not that abd either.

Dogsoldier

You are completely missing my point. Which leads me to suspect that you are not even reading my posts. Look, minus Superdelegates, statistically speaking there are only two choices left for President: McCain and Obama. If we then conclude and admit that Clinton cannot mathematically catch Obama in pledged delegates, then we have to agree that her only chance is the Superdelegates breaking her way 7 to 3. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. NOT WHEN A BLACK MAN HAS THE MOST DELEGATES. Just think about what message that sends. That the Democratic party will be unfair, unjust, against a black man after the ugly racial history of our country? This is precisely what the Democrats stand against. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. It will be the absolute end of the party. They would rather put Obama there for him to lose and fight this fight again in 4 years.

Posted by: Kevin | Apr 15, 2008 6:24:15 PM

If Clinton gets the nomination after Fla and Michigan with the crooked elections in Texas, then I and a lot of others will quit the democratic party.

hey vanessa survey usa ,you know the one that accurately called ohio ,new jersey and new york just released their latest poll showing hillary up by 14pts which is consistant with the other penn. polls they have done over the last month.

Posted by: don tufts | Apr 15, 2008 6:28:11 PM

This is what i suspect will happen. Obama will win the nomination because he is mathematically too far ahead for Clinton to catch him. I suspect that Clinton knows this and is just playing for 4 years from now when she can run again. She is damaging Obama so he will have NO SHOT of winning the General eelction. I think Obama will go into the General badly wounded and will MOST LIKELY lose to McCain. The Democrats will say, okay, we were fair, but the country wasn't ready yet for a black guy. In 4 years, it will be Hillary vs. McCain again. Peghaps McCain will be too old to run, and it will be Hillary vs. some one else.

Posted by: Kevin | Apr 15, 2008 6:28:27 PM

Kevin - Throw in FL and MI now most likely going republican and the dems are down two/zip even before the general begins.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 15, 2008 6:31:02 PM

kevin: If Obama gets the required number of delegates he will win thats the way it works! Nobody can or will take it away from him! After all is said and done it will require superdelegates to break what is essentially a tie!

Posted by: russell | Apr 15, 2008 6:31:09 PM

14 in Survey USA???

Thats great... Clinton was leading by 18 last week

She must be dropping

hmmm...

Three polls today Clinton leading by 6, 9, and 5

Single digits

In a state she should easily win by 15+

and NEEDS to win by 15+

hmm

Not a good day for the Clinton camp

Posted by: Vanessa | Apr 15, 2008 6:31:46 PM

Vanessa - As I've said before I do not put any faith in polls. Who was polled? How? What groups? And so on. Hillary wins by one single vote is good enough for me.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 15, 2008 6:36:08 PM

One reason he can outspend Hillary is probably all of those rich California donors he was courting when he made his arrogant comments about small town people. Anyone who truly believes he is bringing in the kind of cash he is strictly from poor and middle class individuals is deluding themselves, but that is what a lot of Obama supporters seem to do. It is hard to believe someone is perfect and then find out they are not, that is why so many refuse to see that his comments were a putdown to working class Americans, thus the myriad of explanations this week. And for all of his talk about not owing any special interest groups anything after the election, spare me! I'm afraid people are discovering his true feelings too late, and he may be the nominee. But as an independent voter, I will never vote for him because I think he is just a well marketed, unpatriotic phony, saying one thing in public and planning something different behind closed doors ....Hmmmm...sounds like every other politician doesn't it....but at least most politicians have the sense to at least pretend to be patriotic. I also think there are just too many disturbing pieces of the puzzle that are starting to fit together between Wright, Rezko, Bill Ayres, the man mentioned in the Rezko trial today (can't spell his name) who Obama claims he never meant (but the witness testified the Obama's were at a party given for this fellow),the constant arrogant remarks by Mr. and Mrs. Obama, and a multitude of things not yet made public I'm sure.

Posted by: Lynn | Apr 15, 2008 6:37:27 PM

Doesn't it seem a little ironic that, after their tax returns revealed $109 million in earnings, the Clinton campaign claims to be so compassionate and understanding of people in an area of the country that has been particularly hard hit economically, then asking for donations from those same people? I understand that a campaign needs money to run, but this just rubs me the wrong way.

Posted by: Anne | Apr 15, 2008 6:37:54 PM

Dogsoldier

Are you really going to tell me that superdelegates deciding the race in favor of the person that came into the convention with a 100 plus delegate lead, is the same as them deciding the election in favor of the person trailing? Are you really going to say that with a straight face? Sure, superdelegates will decide the race. But the question is, what criteria is the fairest criteria to use? Clearly, clearly, without a shred of doubt, the fairest criteria is to go with the leader...the one with the most EARNED delegates. Any other criteria is so nuanced, it will smell like straight up BS.

Posted by: Kevin | Apr 15, 2008 6:38:10 PM

Even if Clinton somehow pulls ahead, the superdelegates would negate that and vote in Obama.

America will welcome our Superdelegate masters!

Posted by: SuperD | Apr 15, 2008 6:41:04 PM

Kevin - The future is quite plain if you want to see what we're trying to tell you. Most of the centrists, center small right, will not vote for Obama, period. That clear enough? The left and far left of this party is in control and we do not and will not support them.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 15, 2008 6:41:49 PM

Rose,

Why are people so insistent that the media is rougher on Clinton than Obama? To me, it seems like it's been the other way around lately. I'll concede that MSNBC seems to be easier on him, but that's the only place I've noticed it. Actually, I've just about concluded that Fox News is McCain's channel, CNN is Clinton's, and MSNBC is Obama's. Newspapers seem equally divided. It sure seems to involve a lot of reading and TV watching to come to anything close to an unbiased conclusion these days!

Posted by: Anne | Apr 15, 2008 6:44:46 PM

In a race between Obama and McCain, why does Hillary even matter anymore?

Posted by: Bill | Apr 15, 2008 6:45:31 PM

Common Sense,
Ah, ain't politics fun! You sound like you have a sense of humor, that's good. Still think my Annie Oakley Hillary is the best candidate though, sorry. The best candidate may not win, but at least they are both giving it the ole college try. And some say these campaigns are nasty, I don't think this year is anything compared to 2004.

Posted by: Lynn | Apr 15, 2008 6:53:00 PM

The reality of losing has already hit the Clinton camp. That's why they're desperate for any morsel of anything due to political starvation.

The reality will soon hit you as well. Just follow the light and come out from under those rocks buried deep underground. It's ok. Reality is on the surface.

Posted by: Common Sense | Apr 15, 2008 6:56:29 PM

why is race brought in every time by the obama supporters? Because Obama is Black...the blacks wont support hillary ( if she gets the nomination...) -- now is that not racism ?

Posted by: satish raman | Apr 15, 2008 6:57:39 PM

"Surprisingly absent from the Clinton's speeches today is any reference to Senator Obama's comments about rural America being bitter."

No doubt their pollsters discovered that she has overplayed her hand with her criticism, and that the voters flock to Obama for the truthfullness of his remarks. Attacking Obama is risky... The new Bloomberg poll shows that in PA he actually benefited from the whole Wright controversy. People liked him more because of the way he handled it.

I am a Repub voter most of my life. Irish Catholic from a pretty bigoted background. I am afraid of McCain's temper and treatment of the women in his life. HRC has honestly just flat out lied on many many occasions. Bill is tied to China all over the place. He passed NAFTA, without it being a treaty and requiring a vote as Bush now wants to do with the Iraq troop level agreement. Have any of you read the entire text of the Obama SFO meeting? I don't feel there was any elitist intent, only concerns for why so many Americans have given up on politics. People, let's not let a chance for true change pass us by. Though retired, I'm one of the 1.3 million Obama supporters. By the way I voted for "W" the first time, what a fool I was....

I am in love with Hillary. I admit I have been covering so that no one will know. I want Bill gone so I can have her. I cant take it anymore! She can bark up my tree anytime she is ready!

I must say Jack Smith or what ever your real name is , you are a fountain of BS not unlike " Lynn " and most of the rabid anti Obama " bloggers " here . Obama has raised more money because nearly one million people have contributed to his campaign and the average donation has been around 100 dollars , just small individual contributors like myself and unlike Clinton he does not take money from corporations , special interest groups or lobbyists . Some of your accusations and statements are so absurd that they actually make me laugh , they are amusing but at the same time pathetic .I knew racism was alive and well in America but I see it's much more prevalent and worse than I thought , better a dumb ass white man from Texas who has not even mastered basic English , who has just about destroyed this country in every respect or McCain who would continue his disastrous policies ? You people are either dumb as a box of rocks and or just plain racists and actually afraid of a man who happens to be half black being President ! Absolute ignorance is all that is , ignorance and stupidity . Clinton cannot over take Obama even with her lies and the smear tactics and dirty politics and you people joining in the chorus like a bunch of parrots . Clinton is against NAFTA and the Columbian free trade agreement like she dodged all of that sniper fire in Bosnia ! Comparing her voting record , her history and taking into account where her money comes from verses what she says , the two don't mesh at all , her words verses her actions just don't add up .Oh and by the way her latest fake outrage and twisting of Obama's words this time in regards to Obama saying many of us hard working people are fed up and becoming bitter and disheartened ... it isn't working , nice try ! No bump or dip in the polls ! In Obama we will finally have a good , decent and honest man in the White House who will work for the people and not just for the corporations and lobbyists and the wealthiest . Obama in 08 !

Obama ruthlessly stabs anyone who is in his way. He stabbed Joe Biden for complementing him on the day he announced his prensidential candidacy. BO has nothing to show, so he framed Biden being racist - his sword card that works every time.

Has any one here ever been polled?

This a disgraced man and a former president who sticks a CIGAR in another woman’s virginia right in the oval office. He's looking for a second chance and unfinished sexes deeds again. They have no shame of themselves. For 8-solid -yrs. this country was held at ransom thru'. investigatons of one volations after the other whilst a group of terrorist plots their deeds for 9/11.

If Obama gets the nomination, I look forward to voting for McCain in November. Obama is a pompous, self-absorbed elitist with an air of arrogance/superiority. I can't wait for the GOP to swiftboat him and to hear his concession speech when McCain is given the presidency.

Loyal Democrat: Cowardice has nothing to do with it. I, like many thinking individuals, place my country above my party. Sure, I'd love to vote for the Democratic nominee, which I have done in every election before. However, if the Democratic nominee is an inexperienced, deceptive, ruthless, racist (Obama), then I would have to vote Republican for the first time in my life. You must remember that just because the mainstream media has been shoving Obama down our throats and giving him a pass throughout the nomination process, there are many of us who have done our homework and understand what a threat he represents to this country, and ironically enough, race relations. His race-card playing campaign has done more to divide the races than anything since Jim Crow, and I, for one, am not looking forward to 4 or 8 more years of such despicable behavior.
