Boss Backing Obama
April 16, 2008 10:56 AM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller and Nitya Venkataraman Report: Legendary rocker Bruce Springsteen is throwing his support behind the presidential bid of Sen. Barack Obama, calling the Illinois Democrat "head and shoulders above the rest".
In a letter to fans on his website, the Boss said Obama "speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit."
"A place where '...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone,'" the iconic musician continued in his letter, quoting from his 2007 song "Long Road Home".
Known for powerful lyrics that detail the struggles of the working class in small town America, Springsteen's endorsement comes at a time when Obama is fighting accusations of elitism and being out of touch with small town voters.
Recent Obama "comments and relationships" the Boss says in his letter to fans "have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision...often in order to distract us from discussing the real issues: war and peace, the fight for economic and racial justice, reaffirming our constitution and the protection and enhancement of our environment."
Only time will tell if Springsteen hits "The Rising" and "The Promised Land" will still be staple songs at former president Bill Clinton's campaign rallies for his wife. Following her wins in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island on March 4, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y. celebrated with Springsteen song "Land of Hope and Dreams" overhead in the ballroom.
During the 1984 presidential election, the liberal rocker objected to Republican incumbent President Ronald Reagan using one of his best-known hits "Born in the U.S.A.", a song that gave voice to the struggles of Vietnam War veterans.
During the 2004 election, Springsteen performed in MoveOn.org's Vote for Change tour campaiging with a coaltion of musicians against the reelection of President George Bush.

This mans endorsement is actually exciting. I am not saying that people will run out and vote Obama now, but some of those men in a certain age groups who will always be a fan..(I also) will stop and notice, and think twice. The Boss pays close attention and feels deeply about policies and politics... He would not back just anyone, and he is down to earth with the rest of us when it comes to them. So yes, he has one up on HIllary.....

Ok, so if we've ever listened to a Springsteen recording we are supposed to vote Obama? I could not believe the childish way Obama was acting the other day with the Annie Oakley speech and all the giggling and laughing because Hillary took a drink. I don't care what he thinks of Hillary. He is supposed to act in a dignified manner. Could you see him acting that way in an audience with the Queen of England, or the Pope? I guess the disrepect he shows the other candidates and his elders is supposed to endear him to the young "highly educated" people who support him. As for Springsteen, it's a good thing he typed his endorsement instead of singing it, otherwise no one would have been able to understand what he was saying.

Good point. I don't think Obama will win Pennsylvania. But i think the way Clinton played this "bitter" card has made the state tighter than it should be. She would have been best-served to let the press and republicans pound the issue for her. Now she looks desperate, negative, silly, and quite frankly, it feeds into the image that the Clintons are in this thing for the Clintons and will do ANYTHING to win. Not to mention they just pooped on white liberal elites like me. Now there are reports that her so-called "ordinary Pennsylvanians" in her ad are not all from Pennsylvania. What embarassment.

Kevin, do not worry, DKM and his very elitist beloved candidate: Hillary the Bosnian General cannot read polls, they speak Bosnian and donot understand English. The only one thing Hill understands is the her FAT CATS in the Lincoln bedroom, the 109 million + 800 000 from Urube in Colombia to ship American jobs to Bogota and Cartagena . God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.

Obama is the best and brightest hope we have for unity in this horribly divided, but beloved country of ours. Deny it all you wish, but Senator Obama is going to be the next President of these United States. He will have my complete support in trying to undo at least a modicum of damage Bushco has perpetrated upon all of us.
Barack, I wish you well.

Re: Polls. Polls are good for one thing. Without them, pollsters would have to look for jobs. So how many people were interviewede in this poll? 500, or 1000? How many millions of registered voters in PA? The polls said Obama had NH by 10 points the night before the election. That worked out well for him, didn't it?
Posted by: Melanie | Apr 16, 2008 11:58:56 AM
Let's face it. It was the kind of "mispeaking" that Hillary did that landed us in Iraq in the first place. Give Obama a break, he mispoke with a poor choice of words. On the otherhand, Hillary lied more than once and laughed in our faces doing it. I will vote for McCain before I vote for Hillary. But like Bruce I think Obama is sincere. He's got my vote.

"Read it for yourself. You are capable of reading, right?"

...and for those who say polls don't matter...I agree to some extent but this was supposed to be a blow out...remember... Murtha saying she is going to beat him by 20 points...lol...
Do you see the more stallwart dems and intelligent people get to meet Obama up close like Mr. Springsteen (or much of the press) they realize ...the Clintons don't look so good anymore.
It is only those who are intimidated, riding on the memory of her as their first lady and the undeclared queen of the party and/or counting on the the old boys netwrok of politics that the Clintons have ruled for 15 years that stay with them...uh...her.
Posted by: dl | Apr 16, 2008 12:07:09 PM
and LOM ...the title says statistical tie...the actual numbers say he stepped ahead...which personally I am pretty sure is not the case...what is funny is that here is a state with practically the entire political establishment and it's forces backing the old school candidate that they are afraid of pissing off... working to get her elected and in a few weeks she is now close enough in most polls for this poll to happen...
remember she needed a huge win... that is why Gov Rendell is suddenly found making more supportive statements about Obama... because he knew this was coming and now he has to start getting back on Obama's good side after all the trash talk for weeks.
I feel for all those people who were intimidated into supporting the Clintons and now have to try and go back to the candidate that they trashed.

I hope that my fellow North Carolinians have better sense than to vote for Obama. He has already widened the racial divide that exists in this state just by running. Anyone who thinks racism means whites against blacks in this country has never spent anytime here in NC. And yes, here in our small towns we do cling to our Religion and our Guns. We pray every night for God to keep us safe from the drug dealing gangs who have moved into the rural areas here because the law enforcement is not prepared to handle them, and we have our guns ready for the late night home invaders here who come into our homes to take everything we have. And then when we do jail them for their crimes, we get to listen to how racist we are because of the percentage of blacks we have in prison here, and how Brother Obama is going to change all that. For all of us, if Hillary isn't the niminee, we will vote for McCain. I would rather put up with four more years of Republican garbage than put up with what we will go through if Obama is elected.

Melanie did you just say that "you do cling to your religion and guns"? Not sure I read that right.
So you are pissed that Obama said the same thing.
No you all aren't just angry that this candidate who fooled you for years into thinking they were the king and queen of the democratic party...no matter what they did putting themselves first. (Even putting themselves 1st and 2nd... ...can you imagine being the child of Hillary and Bill... yeah sure you're the most important thing in their lives... but put your life on hold ofr in the shadows or spend most of your time talking about BOTH of your parents... can you imagine that?)

The Bruce Springsteen - Sir Elton John contrast tells it all.
Posted by: greg | Apr 16, 2008 12:19:50 PM
James C like all of the other stupid people who have jumped on the elitist comment have no idea what Obama was saying. Let me break it down for you.
Every 4 years the Republicans go into these small towns and spew garbage about Democratic liberals trying to take away their guns, stop school prayer and stop abortion. When plants close and their jobs are shipped overseas, some may even harbor ill feelings towards foreigners blaming them for taking their jobs by working for sub standard wages. Now, instead of voting for the Democrats who have their economic interest in mind, they instead vote Republican, convinced that they will protect their right to own a gun, pass legislation making school prayer mandatory while fighting to repeal Roe v Wade. After years of being screwed, these people will not vote for Democrats. Their vote is based on those hot button issues - not their own economic interest. The Republicans can't solve your financial problems but if you vote for their guy he won't pick a running mate who is Pro Choice. Now tell me, how do any of those things help you if you're unemployed or your house is being foreclosed? ANYBODY? ANYBODY?
Personally, I think people who vote this way are complete idiots! But that's just me. Another snobby stuck up African American female. I'm probably more of an elitist than the Obamas but I'll tell you something...I'm extremely bitter! See, 4 years ago at the age of 44 I voted for the first time ever. For years my family was very active in voting but I always felt that it was just a waste of time even though I was riddled with gilt. As an African American the right to vote was achieved with the blood of a lot of other people. Then in 2004, I voted for Al Gore and look what happened! The whole Florida incident left a bad taste in my mouth. However, there is no way I'm going to miss the opportunity to vote for Obama. Like many African Americans I use to love the Clintons. Now I see them both for who and what they really are. PATHETIC!

I have absolutely NO intention of arguing with anyone... Someone said, "You know the most insulting and despicable thing about Obama supporters is that they mirror the eltitist arrogance and self righteous attitude of Obama" And I agree with that... Despite the fact that I do not support Obama, I do have SOME respect for him.. And I would have much more respect for him if he showed some humility... Sadly, elitists don't know what that is..

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes! Bush and his boys have committed numerous crimes against the Iraqi people, the Constitition, and American citizens. We were sold the lie that they were protecting and spreading American moral values, and all the while they were giving us a corporate, big business raping and lynching. Wake up America! So Obama says...he makes mistakes. He doesn't give in to some of this crap coming from the other side but admits on occasion to making mistakes. Hillary has done that once...twice and really never actually said the words "I made a mistake" ...and when she has... it has never been quickly... it has never been before a torrent of people showing her and after her own multiple denials...even in the face of overwhe, ming evidence in the opposite direction...
but you post on here... that OBAMA needs humility?
I think if that is the reason you are not voting for Obama ...you need to take a harder look at the situation at hand.

dl -- You obviously don't understand how to interpret a statistical poll.
If the numbers were 55/45 with a margin of error of 6 percentage points (55-6 and 45+6 overlap), it would still be a tie. Which means, there is no statistical evidence to conclude that either candidate is ahead, aka a statistical tie.

Hillary's lists of associations and scandals and questionable ethics...is A LOT longer than the one you posted.
People in office meet and work with lots of bad people ... but if you are going to judge a candidate on their relationships and scandals... there is nobody (name me one politician) that has as many scandals, lawsuits, questions, investigations, disbarrments, caught lying, used the Lincoln bedroom, questions about finanical transactions associated withpardons and bills passing and favors...
than the Clintons...

Obama doesn't have it clinched because he is fighting against people like you and the rest who fought for the Clintons for years and can't let go of their own protectionism of "THEIR" candidate.
I say it all the time... Hillary Clinton if you look at her as not a Clinton or not like Rosalind Carter or Nancy Reagan or barabera Bush or Laura Bush or Pat Nixon or Lady Bird Johnson... ...living in the White House and around the President yes... so was his personal assistants...but if they were Senators... you would not be voting for them if they had the rest of Sen Clintons resume.
He can't close the deal because many dems have brainwashed themselves to just attack anyone who says that some body is better than the Clintons.

Especially with Obama pulling out of Iraq and the mess that's going to sweep through the middle east then if think gas is expensive today now you ain't seen nothing yet. High energy equals low dollar and high cost of living and less jobs. That should make America great again.

I hope Clinton does manage to game the system and win the nomination. Not only will she squander the Democrats' chance to take back the White House but she'll probably lose Democrats the control of Congress, too. Why? Because American voters, including millions of nominal Democrats who will vote for McCain if Clinton loses the nomination, have STILL not learned the one very tough lesson of American politics: Republicans are a catastrophe for the nation and the vast majority of its citizens. They bring war, economic chaos, class warfare, poverty, homelessness and despair whenever they hold the rein of power. Either Clinton supporters are not paying attention or they are followers of what appears to be Clinton's driving mantra: Hillary or nobody. Except that if Clinton wins the nomination, it won't be nobody who wins in the fall. It will be McCain and the Republican party.

Its comical some people post about Obama being clean and not taking money from the lobbies, the fact is he is neck to neck if not ahead of Clinton in terms of funds and fund raisers from lobbies/PACs.
Can Obama do anything wrong? Its just amazing anytime anything comes up bad about him, either it is brushed aside with silly excuses from media and supporters or with a cleverly articulated coverup speech, please save us from them even if they are his own words for a change, you can find better lines and speeches in hollywood movies..this whole adulation for him is just ridiculous.

dl -- Interesting assessment. I find it most interesting that you would claim he can't clinch the nomination so far because he is "fighting against people like you."
Really? For a guy who is supposed to be the great uniter, he needs people like me to win the nomination and G-d forbid, the general election.
Is he fighting against people like me who want what's best for our families?
Is he fighting against people like me who commute into work everyday to earn good wages so that I can pay for health care, the rising costs of fuel, mortgage, education, etc.?
Is he fighting against people like me who as a woman, wants equitable pay in the workplace?
Is he fighting against people like me who wants to bring our troops home and focus our nation's resources on lifting up the middle class?
Is he fighting against people like me who cares about the environment and wants to ensure that the legacy my generation leaves behind is better for our future generations?
He can't clinch this nomination because he hasn't convinced about 25% of the electorate that he is the better candidate to address the issues we care about.
At least Clinton has people like me protecting her candidacy. Obama has people like me as well, but he also has the MSM behind him. This would have been over long ago for him otherwise.

dl - Green jobs? The answer? My friend, there's a big old world out there where other nations have already gone this route and not much has happened at all. Other nations have discovered it is fossil fuels that power the planet and will for decades and decades to come which translates into costs world wide. Perhaps one half of all products in our lives are derivatives of petroleum products. That's not gonna change anytime soon. To effect even one percent of a nation the size of America will take thirty years to build the infrastructure of sufficient capacity to matter. You know that.

Jack51 -- I didn't miss the point. There are folks here who were claiming Obama was ahead according to that poll. I was addressing that point. Nice spin though. Another cue from the Obama playbook: what I really meant...
And if you guys knew how to read those polls, in that same link it said that last week Clinton was ahead 46/43 and two weeks ago, Obama was ahead 45/43, both statistical ties as well.
So, instead of touting this tie this week as a good win for Obama, you should have been cheering for the past two weeks as well since the results were the same.
Again, how can she steal a nomination that has rightfully belonged to NO ONE!? How does Obama win the nomination? I love how you all like to talk about the legitimacy of this contest, but always conveniently leave out MI and FL. Good luck with that argument.

Jackt51,
So in your eyes if Hillary wins the nomination she has stolen it, because in your eyes your ELITE LIMOUSINE LIBERAL candidate OBAMA already owns the nomination, right? I used to think this was a Democratic process until I started dealing with the likes of the Obama Zombies.
========================================
Obama--will say or do anything to keep the working class people down.

The democratic party will soon belong to the far left. I'm afraid you'll either have to vote for Obama or McCain. Personally, I think you'd do better voting for Nader. He will be the only candidate standing who is for real change!

Dogsoldier if America gets to a renewable energy source (i.e. fuel cell advances with new technology ...turning water and sun into hydrogen and then using it and turning it back into water...which is right there... more efficient solar energy technology...etc)
We have the facilities, the schools ...the resources to make that happen...
other nations do not have what America has on that front...but they had some will.
If one of these companies breaks that fuel cell science and is able to create that ( and their are companies doing this... and making serious advancements in the past year especially) think what it would do to our economy if suddenly just cars, homes and airplanes could be powered without petroleum.
These are not fantasy creations these are technologies that exist and the questions of using that technolgy is in it's ustainabilty past a lab and/or shrinking the size of the technology doing it.
I absolutely do not think we are 30 years away from that. and if one of these other countries gets to it first... good for them but with those discoveries come a windfall of industry and export.

Nader? Did the conversation just representationally stop when you said that.
As much as I wonder about people who are still stuck in their stance with hillary and Mccain... anybody who jumps in and says Nader... I think... Now here is somebody who I have absolutely no understanding of how his brain works...lol.
No offense just not sure what a vote for Nader does besides waste the energy you use going to the polls on election day.

Someone tell the Boss that NJ went for Clinton. Also Bruce's birth state of CA.

dl - Yes, we're thirty years or more away. For instance, the power grid alone is and remains the culprit for the recent power failures about 16 months ago. Did it get upgraded since then? No! Why? No one is willing to throw out the big bucks to fix the problems and we're just one power line moment from another disaster. Do you have any idea of the costs involved in the power grid alone? That's just one single example of the magnitude of the problem. I know Clinton says green power as well, but if you know anything about energy usage at all, and I work in the field with big oil, you soon develop a keen awareness of the magnitude of the needs of a nation this size. It's all touch and go on the best of days. And that is no joke, believe me.

If the choice for Hillary voters come down to McCain, Obama or Nader, I'm sure Nader will get his share. Nader's anti-corruption represents a good way for voters to make their real feelings heard. Much better than voting for socialists.

Springsteen backed Kerry along with almost half of America. I believe his best song title that describes the way most folks feel about Obama is Born to Run. While Hillary portrays a campaign based on a sense of entitlement based on dynastic ping pong between the Bushes and the Clintons Obama brings people together and shows that as a country we have an entitlement to sense in our leaders and their concerns for all of us.

"Hillary Voted FOR THE WAR"
So did Kerry, Rockefeller, Daschel and Dodd. They too must have poor judgment...and they all have endorsed Obama.
