Cheney Calls the Rev. Wright's Comments 'Appalling'

ABC News' Jon Garcia reports: Vice President Dick Cheney made a quick appearance on Sean Hannity's radio show, where he used some very strong words to condemn the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barak Obama's former pastor.

"I thought some of the things he said were absolutely appalling," Cheney told the conservative talk show host. "And, you know, I haven't gotten into the business of trying to judge how Sen. Obama dealt with it, or didn't deal with it, but I really -- I think, like most Americans, I was stunned at what the reverend was preaching in his church and then putting up on his Web site."

Cheney was referring to the now infamous, caught-on-tape comments Wright made during some of his sermons, including "God damn America," and the assertion that the United States brought on the 9/11 attacks with its own "terrorism."

The vice president also backed his boss, President George Bush, and his decision to attend the Beijing Olympics this summer. Bush has come under fire for pledging to attend the games, as critics say it shows support for China in the wake of its violent crackdown in Tibet. Both Democratic presidential contenders, Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton, and others have called for President Bush to boycott the opening ceremonies.

Cheney told Hannity that wasn't a good move.

"Well, the president has made it clear that he's planning on going, that he thinks this is primarily a sporting event," Cheney said. "The best way to achieve progress and change in terms of the way the Chinese operate is to talk to them quietly. And boycotting the Olympics isn't the right way to go. That really penalizes our athletes. And so I think he certainly indicated at this point he does plan to go, and I'd be surprised if he didn't."

The vice president spent the balance of his time talking up the administration's moves on Iraq, the surge, and Gen. David Petraeus' testimony this week.

I think if Obama gets the nomination what we will see if folks looking into those sermons more, and more TV spots will play them in their entirety and once people see that it will be a non-issue. It already is a non-issue with everyone except the far right.

to the poster with no name - legally, if you own a website with hyperlinks you are responsible for allowing them... in fact, posting hyperlinks without permission is against the law... the larger legitimate sites do not allow hyperlinking so they do not get sued.... hence the reason moderators delete posts with links in them.

After participating in authorizing war crimes as one of the gang of six breaking international law, Cheney is "stunned" by something that someone said? Oh, how shocking!

Posted by: Justinteim | Apr 10, 2008 9:09:43 PM

All the leftist hypocrites cutting down V.P. Cheney without any provable crimes except what's in their imaginations! If he was guilty of any ANY crime whatsoever you can be sure that all those hypocrites would be all over him legally. So why are'nt the scumbuckets inditing him? HYPOCRITES,HYPOCRITES,HYPOCRITES, all of you!

thastar, you didn't listen to the whole sermon. What other excuse is there for you not to understand what he said?

Appalling is You saying "SO?" to our arm troops and us parents who suffer so you get rich! Cheney you are appalling !

what i dont get is y every one is so stuck on the war in iraq. see the problem is that the world needs policed. unfortunatlly its a double edged sword. its a loose loose situation for this great country of ours. see if we do something about it then were starting a war we shouldnt be in and if we dont do anything then were ignoring the problem and we dont care about them. so before we go bad mouthing the people making the decisions maybe we should start with bad mouthing the people that put them there. and also if barak was in office on 911 how do u think he would have handled it. would he have just tucked tail and ran and not stood our ground. the bottom line is that the decision has been made and we should deal with it util the end. support our troops and our elected leaders decision.

I'm a white 48 y.o. woman with a decent job and I was very happy to vote for Senator Obama in the primaries. I'm not against Senator Clinton, although I'm not crazy about her, either. I will gladly vote for either one in the general elections

I do have to say that I pity the next POTUS, no matter WHO she/he is, because they will have a HUGE mess to clean up. And if they don't do it PERFECTLY (and who could?), you know that the die-hard-"excuse-Bush-no-matter-what" crowd will cry and moan and blame them for everything. How sad...

For the first time in my life I agree with Cheney. I hope the world doesn't end tomorrow!

hasn't cheney been indicted in the Netherlands or some such place for war crimes??? I think he will one day be put up to trial. For whatever reason he launched the war, thinking it was easy, getting rich, getting oil...whatever, I believe completley it was NOT for our safety. He used our military like it was cannon fodder. He broke a solemn promise we have with our troops that we would NEVER put them in harms way unless it was totally necessary. Cheney should go to jail. so should bush. WHo knows, maybe someday someone will find some memo, some evidence they haven't destroyed. Maybe one day they will. either way, I don't think God smiles down on them. In this way I think REv WRights IS rights. God doesn't change in what he thinks is right and wrong. if you do nto do God's will, you WILL be damned, no matter who you are.

WestCoastMessenger,
Yes I did indeed post that I have seen the same verbage by you guys on multiple days on multiple blogs; same with Concerned American I believe though Concerned American wasn;'t in the blog we (you, Dogsoldier and I) when I posted that comment. And indeed that would certainly make it appear as if your comments were "canned", "cut and paste" ,"rehearsed" IDK. Dogsoldier did just post recently without a slogan and seemingly in the moment; so I reserve further judgement.

That is the first sensible thing that idiot has said.

It's so bad even Chaney is laughing at Obama and his unRev. Wright. "Oh what a tangled web we weave".

Posted by: Akitisha | Apr 10, 2008 9:42:37 PM

Now I am confused.

I thought Rev Wright's remarks in question were just wrong.....but now the only American who embodies pure evil spoken against those statements....thats puzzling because the eveil criticizes only the good...that would mean either Chainy is good and Wright is eviel....or vise versa......but naaaaa Chainy can not be anything but evil.s
