Clinton Denies Saying Obama 'Cannot Win'; Aides Dispute Question

ABC News Eloise Harper Reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., denies she told Governor Bill Richardson, D-N.M., that her Democratic nomination rival, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., "cannot win" a general election against presumptive Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

"That's a no," Clinton, D-N.Y., told reporters at the end of a press conference in Burbank, California, when asked if she made the comment in a private conversation with Richardson.

"We have been going back and forth in this campaign of who said what to whom and let me say this, that I don't talk about private conversations but I have consistently made the case that I can win," she said earlier in the press conference.

Clinton aides now insist the Senator misunderstood the question, asserting the candidate believed she was answering whether or not she would discuss a private conversation.

"I just double checked," Doug Hattaway, Clinton spokesperson told ABC News, "She was saying she was not going to tell (the reporter) about her private conversation."

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reported on Wednesday's World News that sources with direct knowledge of the conversation between Sen. Clinton and Richardson, prior to the Governor's endorsement of Obama say she told him flatly, "He cannot win, Bill. He cannot win."

A source with direct knowledge of Richardson's conversations with the Clintons added an intriguing wrinkle to the report: Richardson himself told Sen. Clinton and former President Clinton that he didn't think Obama could win, back when he was (according to the Clintons) telling them earlier this year that he wouldn't endorse Obama.

"Too inexperienced," Richardson said, the source tells ABC News.

Someone is lying, Richardson, Clinton or George Step.? which is it? She shouldn't have even addressed this, this just makes her look bad. She said -he said. She already knows the public doesn't think she is trustworthy, so why do this? Seems dumb to me. Leave to camp Clinton to kill her campagin chances.

LOL .... Poor Hil, she's so self destructive.

Obama is very adept at taking a sentence out of context or bending the truth to the point of breaking. He's a snake. Hillary is only slightly better.

Vote Nader!

Forget too inexprienced. How about too radical!

Posted by: Tim | Apr 3, 2008 4:51:47 PM

I guess we are now supposed to believe you, Hillary? I'm still trying to get over the sniper thing, lol.

One thing for sure, we know Hillary is not lying. It's just not in her make-up to be dishonest. I might be crazy but I still believe her Bosnia story.

Posted by: Yossel | Apr 3, 2008 4:51:57 PM

Hilly was too busy dodging sniper fire to have said that.

Posted by: PPK | Apr 3, 2008 4:52:24 PM

Hillary go away. You just can't tell the truth!

Posted by: Jim Koury | Apr 3, 2008 4:59:41 PM

Who cares? If Richardson did say that, he changed his mind obviously. If Hillary says that, that's fine. She probably believes that. And, George's info was not first-hand.
I Support Obama and I believe he most certainly can and will win! Go Barack!

Ever since Maggie Williams took over, this campaign just can't help stepping in something. Hell, it's dancing in the pasture. I think Williams is a smart woman, but knows zilch about politics at this level. Unless Wolfson takes over, Clinton's had it.

Hil lies, Bill lies, Obama lies, Rev Wrong lies, you dems are quite pathetic. McCain landslide in Nov 08, be ready!

Said it before; Do you get the feeling you are witnessing a murder - suicide?

Barack Obama has consistently shown he is a man of integrity. He will make a great President. The Clinton's are tired and worn and there sleazy tactics are just contemtible. America needs new... America needs fresh. Obama is that and MORE.

At least she denied it. I am happy about that.

Posted by: Navin | Apr 3, 2008 5:02:49 PM

Give her a break. She misspoke (again)- probably from lack of sleep answering all those 3:00 A.M. phone calls.

Posted by: WYSIWYG | Apr 3, 2008 5:03:13 PM

Who is this "source" with knowledge of Richardson's conversations? Sounds fishy to me. And so what? What's wrong with saying he can't win? She IS running against him. Sounds to me like another opportunity for Obama to play the race card to his "advantage."

Yet none of these lies
1) Caused oil to increase to more than 100 per barrel , a record
2) Caused the dollar to crumble
3) Causes a half trillion dollar invasion and occupation of an essentially unaremed nation
4) Caused the biggest increase to gasoline pricing IN HISTORY
5) Caused the largest deficit in US history.

YET so many care about rhetoic in a campaign

It's 3 am. The ghosts of Presidents past visit Hillary to give her advice to change her ways.

George Washington tells her to be honest.

Thomas Jefferson tells her to listen to the people.

Abraham Lincoln tells her to take a break and get out more to the theatre.
