Clinton Is Against 'Whoop-De-Do' Speeches

April 19, 2008 1:37 PM

ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton, perhaps venting a bit of frustration in a state where she was leading by double digits months ago, painted a grim state of affairs of this country outside a firehouse in West Chester, Pa., this morning.

After stressing the financial burdens Americans are suffering, problems with education, and more, Clinton stressed the critical decision these voters have to make. She jabbed her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, who Saturday held his largest rally ever miles from the site where Clinton spoke.

“I don’t want to show up and give one of these whoop-de-do speeches and, you know, and just kind of get everybody whipped up," she said, "and those [of you who are for me] feel great and, you know, try to convince some of you to be for me.”

Clinton again made her argument that the White House is not a place for wimps, saying, “When you get into the general election and when you get into the White House, the stresses and pressures of the general election and  the job are overwhelming. And we know we have to have a president ready on day one to take charge.”

Clinton refrained from criticizing the Republican frontrunner John McCain, and instead shared a story about their accommodations when they traveled oversees together.

“We’ve gone to Afghanistan together," she said. "We were in Kabul, and there weren’t safe accommodations. We actually had a row of containers -- you know, you see those containers come off the ships. Those were our accommodations in Kabul.”

Clinton has said in the past that she is friends with McCain and respects him.

Clinton had five stops to race through today -- on the final Saturday before Tuesday's Pennsylvania primary.

Clinton spokesperson Mo Elleithee downplayed expectations, saying the campaign is being outspent in Pennsylvania, but adding, “If they cannot close the deal, close the sale, here in Pennsylvania, they are gong to have to answer why.”

She is against big crowds, caucasus, Obama, MoveOn, frustrated with the democratic party, yet she buddies up with McCain.

Who is this woman?

I'm seeing many parallels between Hillary's behavior and that of Joe Lieberman. She's taking this race personally and sees herself as bigger than the party or its goals.

Obama's rally was excellente! I can't believe the media is not reporting what happened after the event. This is a truly magical time in our political history! Thanks Obama! Yes We Can!

Is she going to McCain's running mate, will she finally come out as a Republican (again) after the campaign is over????

McCain/Clinton - Old and Witchy like none before.

Why shouldn't he be dropping in the polls? Now that he's shown his ineptitude, nobody should be surprised.

Obama supporters, yes, Obama's rally was great. I'm sure all his rallies are great and full of excitements. But life is larger than excitements. Life has serious responsibilities which demand commitment and right actions of our commander-in-chief, not just words. Obama is a typical flip-flop. I am saddened by the fact that many people are deceived by him. I foresee one day all of you are going to cry and regret over your wrong choice!

Has anybody heard Obama talking about serious issues?

Posted by: Just Curious | Apr 19, 2008 2:01:38 PM

Hillary the Bosnian General is now in bed with FoxNews, McCain, Hannity and OReilly. That is why she lost all of us. She is a republican but changed side to be with Bill and now she is going back with republicans and she is showing to the world who is the real Hillary: I am in it for me. That is why nobody trusts her, nobody believes her and nobody can count on her. Saying NAFTA is great, then in Ohio No it is not good beause you need their vote, then send Blanchard to Canada to tell them no problem, NAFTA is great. Saying you are completly against the Colombian trade agreement but you receive 800 000 from Urube and giving yourself 5 m debt for your campaign. Playing the republican dirty politics against your democrate opponent and hoping to win, no because Hill's negatives are too high. God bless America and God bless Obama.OBAMA08.

Don't be too surprised if you are thinking O can win the Presidency, and McCain cleans his plow! If he is the nominee, most Americans will put the country and not the Party first. Both the Party and our country have some big problems to solve. With the Party, it is the skewed caucus format and the denial of Florida and Michigan primary votes. Sorry to say it, but the process does not even come close to being democratic. With the country, we have every problem domestically and internationally to deal with. We need a candidate who knows the issues, has studied the issues, and has the experience to handle the issues. We do not need someone who is still on a learning curve.

She is for HERSELF and she is helping Mc Cain for she is saying if I can't have this neither can Obama .She is setting herself up for 12 I hope this blows up in her face for if they dig all the dirt out on the two of them will make your skin crawl people I mean it.I have seen the letter and next week the two of them go on trial for fraud in Californis she is named twice once first lady (ugh) and as senator clintonhaha going to catch up withthem they tried to get it tossed but the courts up held it and I hope thye both get their aqq nailed to the wall.

Well lets all have a debate like the one on SNL for Obama, then we wont have to worry about hurting his feelings.

The flag pin issue was asking by a voter not the moderators, so what Obama supporters are saying voters cant ask him tuff questions, but all of you wanted an answer from Hillary daughter on her father's affair.

When question time came to the serious matters about the economy and taxes Obama failed, he had no clue what he was speaking about and came out and said he was raising taxes, guess all of you missed that one.

The fact is the debate was not bad its just that Obama had no answers for those questions so he failed that is all.

Way to go. Obviously, someone else does Obozo's web pages and has him memorize his single-directed speeches. But, as we see when he's pressed for details, he shrivels like a dried grape.

Posted by: S | Apr 19, 2008 2:08:03 PM

I wonder if Hillary could draw a crowd of 35,000 people in Philadelphia?

I doubt it seriously.

How is Hillary think she is going to win the general election even if she gets the nomination if she disses the activist base of the Democratic party?

That does not make any sense.

Posted by: Stacey | Apr 19, 2008 2:09:52 PM

Tell Huffington Post to release the entire tape on Hillary speaking and not just give us the bits they want us to hear.

Posted by: SJ | Apr 19, 2008 2:10:48 PM

Hilary Clinton is right on with criticizing Obama for his "Whoop di do" speeches. And his supporters are misguided. The Obama supporters have been sold a bill of goods with this guy and I too fear for this country if he were to be elected.Let's look at his record.Oh yeah,he has no record. No experience. But because he seems like such a nice guy let's put him in charge of the country. And when he finally got a few hard questions instead of a free pass during the last debate, he seemed dumbfounded, almost taken aback.

Posted by: Deborah Drucker | Apr 19, 2008 2:10:57 PM

I don't think the persons that hang around the Huff posting comments are voting for Hillary,, neither those that are in love with MoveOn.org so I don't think she is losing much there.

Posted by: SJ | Apr 19, 2008 2:13:41 PM

YES WE CAN what? Change what? Is Obama ever going to say anything substantive?
It's true. You get the leaders you deserve. Hail the conquering hero.

I hereby and forthwith anoint Obama: Barack "teleprompter" Obama. His worshippers are angry if others use his middle name anyway ;)

Obama is a goner without teleprompter. Mccain is a goner WITH a teleprompter. Enjoy.

Grass Roots Support
Caucuses
Motivating Speeches
Former Supporters who support her opponent

Poor, sad Hillabeans! She would have been begging for Moveon's support in the general election. Too bad she'll never get there!

And Obama doesn't like not giving speeches with his preprepared script and his teleprompters. That's why he has said he won't participate in another debate. Poor Obama; someone asked him some tough questions. Let's all blame the moderators for his terrible performance at the debate. After all, the messiah just couldn't be at fault for not being able to answer the questions forcefully and truthfully, now could he?

You know, I am really really tired of Clinton supporters telling us Obama supporters that we are stupid, misled, morons. You know, you all sound a bit elitist to me. And, so far you are outnumbered. HILLARY IS NOT BILL. Get over it. She is unappealling to many of us for a whole variety of reasons, that we have thought through. We support Obama on the issues and his message. That's how it works. You don't like it, you don't vote for him, but stop implying that we being fooled. You all sound very bitter. Hmmmm.

In a year the Democrats could not lose the White House...they are gonna lose the White House.

Who would have thunk it?

The bad news is the liberal John McCain is going to be President.

That means three new David Souters on the Court.

It is amazing how "objective" the media is towards the most competent person in this race, Hillary Clinton. There was a good article about Obama's secret weapon: the media, today, I suggest the reader and blog writers to refer to it.

Hillary 08 :)

Posted by: Meg | Apr 19, 2008 2:38:30 PM

the fact is Hillary lost because of Hillary. she could not run a campaign why would we want her to run the country?

i see the messages from other posters that "Obama supports should get real, the world is a tough place and speeches blah blah blah." the fact is you need someone who can articulate a vision, have the ability to get the best and brightest to develop and plan that vision, and then the judgment to execute that vision from birth to death; Obama has this ability and this is what the country needs.

When Obozo is asked where the meat is, he stammers and stutters and completely avoids the subject. It's easier to teach a pig to sing than to get anything meaningful out of this slug.

You Hillary supporters just boggle my mind. There is an under tone of hatred to anyone who doesn't support her. Quite frankly the biggest reason I will not support her is, she IS DIVISIVE! I am not a child. Speak to me like an adult!!!!

OBAMA has the best chances of getting rid of lobbyists, which are there reals reasons this country is going down the toilet!!!

Posted by: Alpesh | Apr 19, 2008 2:44:03 PM

So I understand it's official now that Sir Hillary has become a Republican?

Ah, now I understand -

THAT's why she voted for the war in Iraq!

THAT's why she lobbied for NAFTA from the very start!

THAT's why she's in bed with America's most powerful Free Trade Lobbyist on the payroll of FOREIGN governments!

THAT's why she favors an American imperialist nuclear umbrella for Arab countries!

She's another Joe Lieberman!

Barack Obama is the last remaining candidate for the Democrats in this race.

I just don't understand American politics. They want change and they want new face but yet they clamor to the guy who is almost consider a front man for a gangster. He and his wife have proven they hate America. He has ties to these radicals that I wouldn't be associating with let along as presidential candidate. I am looking at this country slowly going down to gutter. I could see Euro becoming dominant currency in about two years. Obama has no idea what he is getting into and has no idea how to get out. All these old Clinton so called friends back stabbing Hillary. Why are they announcing their support at the crucial time. I don't understand why the media is not questioning their motives. Obama gets free ride on these debates and he comes across a first debate where he is attacked and he crumbles. The next day in a prepared speech he denounces the debate when no one can talk back. This is not a socialist country and if you want to live under a socialism, there are many country to choose from. Obama must be stopped if he are going to earn back our respect and show the world we are not misogynistic society. We also desperately need someone to turn this economy around. Please don't give the country to a socialist to do this important and critical job.

Poor Hillary, she can't accept she's going to lose!! But lose she will, either by Barack in the Primaries or certainly by John McCain in the general. Remember at her "Elite" private college, Wellsley, she was president of the college Republicans.

Funny that Clinton is telling us not to throw our vote away on someone who is drawing crowds 10-50 times larger than herself.

The Clintons must really think we are stupid.

Posted by: E Nelson | Apr 19, 2008 2:48:42 PM

Why vote for the person? Neither a President or a Representative alone can do anything substantial legislatively. They have to work with others to pass legislation. The President also come with a network of potential appointments that are built up over time through party relationships and experience. And why the rush? Let each state cast their vote for a candidate and in the end the party will select their nominee. Why are we so comfortable with close presidential elections, but worked up about a close party nomination process? Penn, your up next! Have fun, and vote big.

Obama is the only hope the Carters have of removing the stain of having Jimmy Carter the worst president of all time. Elect Obama and then Jimmy will only be the second to the worst president in the history of the Republic. Hey, if Hillary gets elected maybe the Clintons will bring back the furniture and others items they stole when the left the White House the first time.

I see people commenting on the fact that clinton is now republican because she doesn't kick like a mule when the other team is near. come on, clinton a republican? far from it. what we need to be thinking about is tearing down the teams and unite. dem vs. rep is no differn't then racism of ideals.
On another note, I can't belive these 3 people are the best this country has to offer.

Many of Hillary supporters like myself do not like nor trust Obama. We will NEVER vote him into the highest office in this country. We will vote Democratic down the line except for the President, thereby having checks and balances in the government. I trust McCain to make better decisions for this country than a one year senator. I would never have a heart operation by a doctor working for one year, nor would I expect GE or any large corporation to hire a CEO with one year in the company. Many of us Dems will just never vote for him and McCain will be our next President. Obama can't win without our vote!!!!! And we just don't like him. Period.

Posted by: Lillyred | Apr 19, 2008 3:00:32 PM

And still no mention of what she can and will do for this country and the mess it's in. It's time her supporters hold her accountable for having an inferior strategy and for constantly mentioning her opponents name. Furthermore, she spent way too much time focusing on Barack and what she thought his faults were and not enough time about her. And here she is again mentioning McCain. It's all I need to see.

They are going to pay for it dearly with backlash in the future.

Posted by: tim | Apr 19, 2008 3:06:25 PM

Obama is completely inept when it comes to actual issues. All he can do is turn a pretty phrase but when pressed on details about issues like the economy he gives answers worse than a 3rd grader could do.

The Obamabots are supporting disaster. Idealists make horrible presidents. Carter was the worst president of the 20th century and Obama is turning out to be even more incompetant than him.

This primary is a sham. If florida and michigan were counted Clinton would be winning. There is nothing democratic about disinfranchising voters no matter what the reason. The democratic leadership has turned out to be hypocrits.

If Hillary has this nomination STOLEN from her I am voting for McCain and may never vote for the dems again. The dems have lied to us.

TomDavie, a failed strategy, constantly making the race about her opponent and telling us nothing about what she is going to do to right the course we are on is precisely why she is bearing the burden of doom. If only people would take the time to research things for themselves instead of believing our biased media they would find out that Obama's former pastor was more patriotic than some of our present leaders that are patriotic in speech only. Rev. Wright served in the armed forces (Marines) in the 60's when a lot of our so called leaders where getting deferments because of their connections. All you have to do is your own research instead of running with whatever the media tells you. Who is more patriotic-the server or the talker?

I want to ask Obama's black supporters. If he were white and had exact same idea, talked exactly like him and had the same name, would you have voted for him. The answer: of course not. There lies pure racism by blacks. Why wouldn't media get it. Blacks are far more racists than whites. Whites do not need to patronize blacks for slavery. It is gone. Right it is life or death for Americans in the world politics, would you give your vote to a child to solve our problem? Please think with your brain before you vote.

Too bad no one at ABC News asked on the Chinese financing of the Clinton library or ask her why her own campaign director was working with Colombia on ratifying NAFTA.
And as far as voting for John McCain, that is like saying to the Republicans , thank you for 8 years of cronyism, corruption , malfeasance, ineptitude , lack of intelligence and oh yeah forgetting that little thing: the oath of office to defend our Constitution.

I think ABC News meant to say "overseas"

Posted by: John | Apr 19, 2008 3:19:35 PM

Oh, Mrs. Clinton, I'm so sorry your accommodations in Afghanistan weren't up to your usual standards. Tough my a$$. Politics is all about getting people whipped up and passionate enough about what they believe in so they will show up to vote. You have given more than a few "Whoop de do" speeches yourself, the difference is your whoop de doo lines are about slamming the character of your opponent and not about what you plan to do. Obama's speeches place the power on the people to make the changes necessary. I've read your plans HRC and find them vague and lacking, but if for no other reason, you have publicly stated that if elected, you will involve us in every middle east conflict militarily. All you did was make us the big stick for one of those countries to use against another. THAT was naive and a very poor declaration of policy in a race where your party is trying to extricate us from a conflict we should not be involved in.

Posted by: Louis | Apr 19, 2008 3:20:11 PM

wait, so your saying people dont change jim? just because he served in the military means he is patriotic?! you know how many people, present and past, enter the military because they feel its the only choice for them? eveyone in the military isnt automatically patriotic. look at john kerry for example. i mean, they are the minority dont get me wrong, but still there are military people who arent patriotic. also, if you mean doing research on this guy and watching him spew out hate, and racism throughout the years, then yes i have done my research. obama suppoters who say this isnt an issue, are simply brainwashed. as the people who run this country, we HAVE to pay attention to who they associate with, and how they run their personal lives. no offense to you mrs. clinton....

For you Clinton supporters...Get over it!! She will not win the nomination, period.

It's sad you have a few people out here who will not vote for Obama in the general election because of his race, despite the fact that his views are very similar to Senator Clinton's. I guess some people will hold on to their racial biases rather than vote on the issues facing the country.

Go ahead and vote for the familiar book cover with nothing but the same as the last eight years. That's dumb to me, but its your right!

Posted by: Marvin | Apr 19, 2008 3:27:58 PM

I am definitely willing to give Obama a chance because I don't think anyone can do worse than those patriotic flag waving leaders we've had in the past and present. They've got us in quite a predicament now and will probably get a lost worse under the same old tired corrupt leadership.

Posted by: Jim | Apr 19, 2008 3:31:19 PM

Hillary is correct. Obama is more talk than any progress. Just look at his district in south side Chicago. More crime, more drugs, jobs disappeared. Most of the bills he sponsored and passed were handouts of other peoples money and they are is worse off economically than when he was first elected. HIS BIG FANCY SPEECHES IS JUST SO MUCH HOT AIR. The idea that this corrupt man might be President make me sick.

The truth is the crowd is the only support he has in Pa that is why he has held his two rallys in the same place in a state of 12,000,000, this is nothing and Clinton has had huge crowds also and just because you attend big rally doesn't mean you are voting for him I went to one just to be fair minded inside the state she is still winning by how much I don't know.

The mathmatical advantage or even possibility just isn't there for Hillary to be the nominated. It is really truly over for her. The media pretends this is not the case.

By criticizing Move On members and sympathizers, she is putting down the people who helped make the Senate Democratic in 2006. It shows that she doesn't care because she isn't going to win anyway and she knows it.

Caucuses are totally undemocratic and can be very much manipulated and the Obama camp knew that. So, they built lopsided victories in those states we WILL NOT WIN in November anyway. Whoop-di-do! The party is so screwed up, they can't even run a proper nomination process. The venom you Obamamaniacs spew should be for Howard Dean's impeachment as party leader. THIS FL voter got robbed and Hillary would be way ahead by now if the party would only have allowed MI and FL to just do what they wanted to do. We held real Primaries and did have ample information to make an informed choice. Howard Dean mugged and robbed Hillary Clinton and I will not likely send one more dime or my vote to the party for such manipulation.

35,000 on a Friday night in Philly! And zero in the MSM on this. You have got to be kidding me, and people say the media is pro-Obama.

yes the bush administration has been a joke. one of the worst in history. and i voted for him twice... but just because this guy flopped, and somehow the government AS A WHOLE, let him continue to flop, dosnt mean mccain is a flop. dont generalize.

Too bad for all of you brainless Bush-backers who would love to see INSANE MCCAIN win in November that Barack Obama is going to be our next president. Make peace with the fact that no matter how much you hate it and no matter how often you pray to jesus that it just won't happen - INSANE MCCAIN IS GOING TO LOSE and Barack Obama will be your next president. Jesus loves Barack Obama!

People are starting to realize just how radical Obama really is. He's only a uniter if you are an America-hating Socialist like him. He only brings hope to other America-hating Socialists. He hangs out with marxists, racists, and terrorists. America will never elect someone as radical as Obama!

LETS NOT FORGET THAT MOVEON COVERED AND HELPED BILL WHEN HE NEEDED THEM THE MOST!!! LET'S TALK ABOUT THE IMPEACHMENT

you want to call foul because they see right through hillary, and their not supporting her. but if was turned you would be supporting them.

if we are going to sit and talk about the past then we should also bring up all the "Theft" that happened while leaving the white house, don't tell me you forgot about that too...

"Obama is unelectable. Wait until the republican machine gets a hold of him."

Nice try, tomdavie.

Do you really believe the Right will use all the past attacks that have failed so far? The attacks end up helping Obama instead of hurting him. In a way, I'm glad we are getting them out of the way. They've been proven ineffective because the voting public has wised-up. Not this time Repugs. Not this time.
