Clinton Pushes Midwestern Background in Indiana
April 26, 2008 2:19 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Speaking today in Ft. Wayne, Ind., Sen. Hillary Clinton told a shivering crowd of hundreds about her Midwestern background. She mentioned her childhood, saying, "I was born in Chicago and my dad was a small businessman -- and I mean a small businessman. He had a small drapery business where he would actually print drapery to fabrics and travel around and sell them. And he usually enlisted my mother and my brothers and me. Sometimes he would hire some men to help out."
Clinton described working in the drapery factory as a young girl, where she helped to make prints on the fabric. "It's one of the many experiences that really taught me about things that I have had my entire life -- hard work, self reliance, individual responsibility. Good Midwestern values."
Clinton spoke in detail about her experience going to church as a young girl. "We went to the schools within walking distance, we went to the church [which was] within walking distance." Church visits meant Sunday school and pot-luck dinners, "with all kinds of molded salads of every sort that one could imagine," she said.
Clinton had a zing for her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, saying that change doesn't just happen when you show up in Washington, DC. "We have to change this country, and that's not just a slogan. It's going to require an enormous amount of work."
She also made reference to Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh's recent comments. "Evan said if it was so easy if all you had to do is just show up in Washington and say 'let's change' ... I think Evan Bayh and I would have figured that out a while ago," Clinton said generating some laughs.

Hillary has roots in all 50 states I think.

She was born in Chicago, raised in Park Ridge, Ill., attend Wellesley in MA. and Yale in Ct., interned in Oakland, Ca., worked in Ma. and Washington D.C.,
Lived in Ark., Washington and New York. I'm not sure that's all, but enough to say YES, she has ties to a lot of states.

Obama supporters, you don't need to be sarcastic. It's the fact that Hillary was born and raised in Chicago and her hometown is in Scranton, Pennsylvania. She's also a new yorker because she's a Newyork senator and has lived there for about 7 years. It won't conflict because people move around in their lives, so does Obama. He also claimed himself to be a Hawaiian, chicago man, Harvard man and stressed his ties with Asians on different occasions when he tried to approach voters etc.

Didn't Obama claim to also be from Kansas? He has officially rejected all future debates. What a wimp!!!! If he is afraid of Hillary, how can he possibly stand up to the Republicans? He has doomed the Democrats. He has painted the superdelegates into a corner. Most of them are too afraid to look racist by not voting for him even though they know he most likely will get eaten alive. Clyburn is using the race card to threaten anyone that supports Clinton---and which side is tearing the party apart? If Obama cared about the democrats insead of his ego and ambition, he would have served his entire Senate term and actually proved he could handle the job.

have you noticed how lately all of obama's hot shot endorses ex presidential hopeful loosers are being really quiet-or flat out denying their previous adoration of obama? case in point pelosi who went on larry king and said she needs to be objective (a little too late nancy). and of coarse mr. misses the limelight, that moron, opportunist, carpetbagger, my governor, bill richardson who was also on larry king spewing hatred toward hillary. i guess bill r is out of the loop eh! so where are all the other hotshots? even dean is singing a new tune. these guys are pathetic. it is time to put them on the 'clean house' express.

good to know that hillary has a broad expansive geographic background, thank you. that is precisely why she can connect with the people.

Megan you may be spot on. But we do know Hillary will be the best President for our Country. She is the most capable and we do trust her uncanny ability to debate and her knowledge of policy, worldly, and excellent think on your feet ability. She is one of the rare chances we have had since FDR. The people that love our Country will keep voting for her. If you have ever heard her speak in person you can feel her passion for all of us. Obama cannot debate her because he thinks she is the best and he has to have 5 days to memeorize his lines. Her thoughts radiate from within and are from the heart.

All things to all people, amaazing that she gets away with it. The most important job in the world and we love for our candidates to out and out lie to us.

Hillary Clinton has an identity crisis

I can't believe how people think Hillary is so great, does honesty not mean anything any more. she lies, has ties to every state, maybe money wise the the big companies. You need a president who is truthful and might build up your country, so that it is repsected world wide again.I don't think after Bush you want the same, which I am sure you will get with Hillary.

hey thinking. most of us have lived in numerous locations. and many of us do not live where we were born. but we still hold dear the place we were born, the place we grew up, the place we went to college. those locations become a part of who we are. i too reconnect with the culture, the slang, the drawl and the language variables when i visit these locations. THANK YOU ABC FOR THIS STORY.

Barack Obama argued Saturday that voters are yearning for "straight talk and honesty". He should give it a try.
Posted by: JR | Apr 26, 2008 3:54:56 PM
Just like his "second hand' speeches...Obama cannot think for himself. HE REFUSES TO DEBATE IN INDIANA AND NC BECAUSE HE NEEDS TO READ HIS PRETTY SCRIPTED SPEECHES FROM A TELEPROMPTER! AMERICANS WANT TO HEAR HIM!
First he acts two-faced with no integrity re: Rev. Wright (or is it Wrong????) then he steals like a thief just to get elected. WE HAVE 50 STATES --- NOT 48.
Americans should not stand back silently. Silence is acceptance. I refuse to do this blindly and with just plain "HOPE" that it will be alright.
Hillary all the way!!

We need a third party. The democrates suck and the republicans suck
Posted by: Thinking | Apr 26, 2008 3:59:21 PM
As a black woman I aint afraid to say it: Mr. Obama aint no president!!
Posted by: emeline | Apr 26, 2008 4:00:37 PM
i know this may come as a surprise to some of you obama supporters. but the majority of us do not live with mommie and daddy for ever, or as adults take up permanent residence in the basement. we move on, we build new lives, and new experiences. just like hillary did.

40 years I have been waiting for the Democratic Party to do something, and it has failed year after year, decade after decade. they haven't delivered on single thing they have promised; Republicans have though and look at the outcome.
This one more time and sizing up to be another looser for the Democrats, the party is so fractured it has lost all direction.
We needa third party
