Clinton Pushes Midwestern Background in Indiana

ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Speaking today in Ft. Wayne, Ind., Sen. Hillary Clinton told a shivering crowd of hundreds about her Midwestern background. She mentioned her childhood, saying, "I was born in Chicago and my dad was a small businessman -- and I mean a small businessman. He had a small drapery business where he would actually print drapery to fabrics and travel around and sell them. And he usually enlisted my mother and my brothers and me. Sometimes he would hire some men to help out."

Clinton described working in the drapery factory as a young girl, where she helped to make prints on the fabric. "It's one of the many experiences that really taught me about things that I have had my entire life -- hard work, self reliance, individual responsibility. Good Midwestern values."

Clinton spoke in detail about her experience going to church as a young girl. "We went to the schools within walking distance, we went to the church [which was] within walking distance." Church visits meant Sunday school and pot-luck dinners, "with all kinds of molded salads of every sort that one could imagine," she said.

Clinton had a zing for her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, saying that change doesn't just happen when you show up in Washington, DC. "We have to change this country, and that's not just a slogan. It's going to require an enormous amount of work."

She also made reference to Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh's recent comments. "Evan said if it was so easy if all you had to do is just show up in Washington and say 'let's change' ... I think Evan Bayh and I would have figured that out a while ago," Clinton said generating some laughs.

"has ties to every state"

talking about growing up in a small town outside Chicago is not a tie to Indiana, it's a tie to core midwest work ethic and values, memories many of us remember and relate to, back when we actually made things here in the US.

what's your problem, you don't have core midwest values? That's why I wouldn't vote for you for President either.

No Emily, Obama never claimed to be from Kansas. His mother did attend school in Kansas. I can see why it doesn't bother Hillary's backers that she lies because they lie as easily as she does.

you need to go back and read his campaign stumping talk in Kansas.

and why shouldn't he say he has Kansas roots?

you're a twit.

fivepin.........Obama stated back in January that wh8le in Kansas he wanted to, "talk about the roots of my life that directly connect to the broader story of the country" by outlining his lineage on his mother's side in Kansas. That sounds a lot like he is trying to claim Kansas.

His lies, her lies, your lies. In the end, the nomination loser will kiss and make up with the nomination winner. All will be forgiven and everyone will swear that the divisions between them were actually quite trivial.

And who said the democrats don't have heart-felt principles and iron clad convictions?.

ROTFLMAO This woman lies like it is her breath.
First she is from AR. and then it was hometown week in PA and since she got her tail handed to her in the state she was really born in IL, now she is trying to claim IN LOL Does she really think people are that stupid? I guess some are since PA listened and gave her votes. Good job PA, now your listed as some of the uneducated that vote Clinton.

Proud of Brian being such an idiot. Hillary talked about visiting her grandfather in Scranton in Pa. and of her life growing up in a small town outside Chicago today.

Hillary made misstatements , some things cant be undone just like some people will never grow up .. Media has helped to fan the flames of this whole mistrust issue. I can gaurantee if you new who hillary was on a personal level you would not be even listening to those powers that be or the ones that seem to love dramatic affairs. If you want character affirmations look to the actress Mary Steenburgen whom is one of Hillarys best freinds ...

Mary Steenburgen..What was the last movie she was in?

Why doesn't anyone here (including the media) speak bring up her shady past in Arkansas and in the White House. And please don't tell me she has been vetted. This woman cannot beome our next president. HRC is nothing but a liar and a cheat. Is this who you want to be for our next president? She becomes whomever she wants to be for that particular day, whatever suits the occasion. Again, today, she played the "good ol' small town girl." She will do, say anything. Has this woman no shame.

Is there any state Hillary's not from and can't draw from her experiences from? Talk about multi-state-ual!

Posted by: Ed Williams | Apr 27, 2008 9:40:08 AM

While Hillary exaggerates, OBAMA lies.

Posted by: John_Lai | Apr 27, 2008 7:42:30 PM

When Hillary was a little girl she used to hunt with her grandpa in
Pennsylvania!
When Hillary was a little girl she used to go to Mid-West schools!
I guess she spent weekends in PA with her grandpa and flew back to her Mid-West schools during the week! Yeah Right!

Obama needs to learn how to walk before he learns how to run! He doesn't have to outspent buying people if he is confident. However, American people are smart enougn to know who is really good to lead our nation. If that amount of money that Obama overspent can do something good for low income American families, he will be deeply appreciated!

Hillary is the ONE for the nation. History can tell.

Raise your hand if you know that Hilary is a Liar! Raise your hand if you know that Bill Clinton is a Liar!

And all America raised their hands

emeline, As a typical white male let me also say Hillary is a phony and we've had enough of phoniness in Washington.

Di:
Hillary Clinton can't win the
nomination! It's as simple as that!

Posted by: reaganfan | Apr 28, 2008 4:48:30 PM

I'm really confused now. Are there any towns that HRC does NOT consider home. She's from IL, NY, PA, AR. How is this possible? Does anyone truly know where she's from, because I've heard a lot of hometowns in this campaign. One could assume she has a less than stable upbringing or very much in the "elitist" category if she claims so mny home towns.

Like many I'm getting increasingly frustrated with the antics in this campaign. Why can nothing be simple.
