Clinton Tip-Toes Around Rev. Wright Issue
April 28, 2008 12:59 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: Senator Hillary Clinton knocked Republican presidential contender John McCain and the Republican party for politicizing the issue of Senator Barack Obama's pastor, Rev. Wright, but tip-toed around her reaction to her Democratic opponent's handling of the matter.
“I have said that that that was a personal decision of his I answered one question about it that made it clear I would not have stayed in that church under those circumstances," Clinton told reporters in Graham, NC. "But, I regret the efforts by the Republicans to politicize this matter and I believe that if Senator McCain were serious he would do more than just send a letter he is the putative nominee I think he could very clearly tell the North Carolina party tell the Mississippi party that he would not tolerate those kinds of advertisements and I’m waiting to see if he does that.”
When asked if Wright’s comments were a reflection upon Obama, Clinton quickly and matter of factly said, “You will have to ask him that.”
Clinton refused to respond to whether she agrees with Gov. Dean’s proposed time-line - that one of the Democratic nominees must drop out after the June primaries - and instead said, “I think this has been good for the Democratic party.” She added, “We are going to go through these next contests and see where we end up and well take stock of where we are when we finish but I also believe we’ve got to resolve Michigan and Florida.”
The former first lady was also asked if the divisiveness from the 1990’s should be a concern to voters to which the Senator responded that she was proud of the fighting she and her husband did on behalf of Americans.
“I guess I’ve read enough history and know enough about American politics to realize that if you are going to stand for change big change,” Clinton said. “ I don't think anybody should be surprised that they are going to fight back and they are going to fight back by coming after the people who are standing there fighting for the American middle class. So, I frankly wear that as a badge of courage.”
Clinton was also asked if her campaign is in discussions with the DNC to help begin fundraising for other Democratic candidates running in November. Clinton acknowledged that her campaign was speaking to the DNC, but when the reporter followed up about the status of those discussions, Clinton said, “you will have to ask the campaign.”
Clinton was asked if she thought Obama’s new appeal to blue collar voters will resonate – Clinton said “That will be up to the voters to decide. What voters know about me is that I have a long record of fighting for the interests.”

Neither Hillary Clinton nor her Husband,
Bill Clinton have ever done anything
for the "middle class"!
This is a lie that the Democrats have
been throwing out for the past several
years hoping some illiterates will
believe it!
Th Clintons probably think a
"middle class" person earns between
$25,000-35,000 a year!

I am waiting for Clinton to "walk out" of her own church after her pastor said she was wrong about Rev. Wright.
It is a shame that religous intolerance has become the platform for some presidential contenders.

What has Obama or Clinton said about helping the lower class? Better yet, what has either of them done for the poor except the token of minimum wage increase.

Democrats - you can vote for the empty suit or you can vote for the bag of hot air. Choose carefully!

Yes, Becky,
but they did not know him for 20 years nor, did he marry the clintons, nor did he baptize Chelsea. Why is it when ever the negative stuff comes out about Obama the Obama cult memebers begin attacks on Hillary. I thought all the cult members of Obama were about a different kind of politics. Sounds like pretty much of the same old to me.

Cindy Sheehan as Obama's (aka Soetoro's) vice president? That would be truly representative of the new democratic party.

You really think the Clinton followers and the Obama (aka Soetoro) followers will kiss and make up?

I don't think Wright is running for anything.

Frank - South Hampton: Why do you Hillary people never bring up or want to talk about her truck load of baggage?? She is worse then he is on who you associate with. Sat. on the news they showed her with a terrorist group, she even faced charged on it. You guys go after Obama, go after her, look at the people she still gets money from. She got $50,000 from a terrorist group for her Senator campaign. Please do your homework, her garbage is not hard to find.

I cannot stand some of thee Obama supporters .. They expect everyone to just give Obama what he wants.
AFter what we know about Obama and his associates, I will surprised people with brain will vote for him for the top most job in this country. But again I could be surprised as we saw the same people electing Bush to the white house that too twice.
God save this country.

how mad do you think hillary is that she is so far behind in delegates she can't take advantage of all these issues. she has only herself to blame. if only she had closed the deal on Feb. 5.
Too bad hillary. It's over.

Obama campaign has always been about himself or about how great his campaign is. NOthing about the people unless they adore Obama. The minute anybody dares to have an uncomfortable question, then Obama or his supporters accuse them of 'old politics', 'mean country' or 'racists'. Obama talks out of both sides of his mouth, he accuses Clinton of feeling entitled, yet it is him who feel entitled because of 90% of the blacks voting for him. Neither him nor Clinton earns a legitimate nomination. This means that we are in unchartered teratory and neither should feel entitled for anything. They need to make the case to the people and delegates. Obama won in Feb through the surprise element with his caucus strategy, but Clinton has fought back in the most impressible manner while he is just wilting away. If Obama can't wage this campaign decisively like Clinton then how can he win against the special interest that he keeps preaching about? He is too weak to do that given that he fails to close the deal against Clinton and worse yet, he can't win the votes from the rest of America.

Actually Obama's (aka Soetoro's) baggage is more difficult to find. He's done a better job hiding it but, slowly but surely, it's all being located.
Posted by: A | Apr 28, 2008 1:40:13 PM
This is an incredibly unfair spin. Isn't it more infinitely more noteworthy that she defended her primary opponent?
Posted by: commonsensenj | Apr 28, 2008 1:40:25 PM
Very well put Leanza. Not that my opinion matters but the issue on race will never be over as long as men like Obama and Wright continue to pray on the tragedies of many generations past. The issues that all of our ancestors faced was so long ago, we can move on as long as people close their ears to such nonsence. It's time to be done playing the race card because nobody wins especially our children.

this is actually just more evidence that the media is corrupt and biased for Obama.
The Clintons have handled Obama with kid gloves actually. The corrupt media makes it sound like any attempts whatsoever by Clinton to expose Obama as being FULL OF IT is 'damaging him for the general election'.
We all know the obvious fact they could do FAR MORE than they have done, right from the beginning. But didnt do it.
Posted by: tomdavie | Apr 28, 2008 1:52:13 PM
It is time for the Republican-controlled Media to give this Wright controversy some fairness and enquire of Hillary Clinton and her surrogates the following: Is it true that, (1) Hillary surrogate, Congresswoman Shiela Jackson Lee, is also a devotee of Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright; that he's been preaching at her home church, where she is actively involved, annually for the past 15 years and has an open invitation to return, and, that she sat in the pews for his visits and did not bat an eye?
Is it true that (2) Hillary surrogate, Rev. Marcia Dyson was not only a longtime member of Trinity United Church of Christ but also still considers Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright her pastor? That Rev. Marcia Dyson's seminary education, in part, was sponsored by Trinity UCC and encouraged by Rev. Wright? And was it not at Trinity were she first met her husband, Rev. Dr. Michael Dyson, who's been very vocal in his defense of Rev. Wright.?
And, lastly of Hillary Clinton, that if Rev. Wright would not have been her Pastor, then why did she and Bill when going through Impeachment, turn to Rev. Wright for Prayer and Support and invite him to the White House? These things should be asked and answered.
Posted by: Becky | Apr 28, 2008 1:53:21 PM
I think that if what Rev. Wright said is correct about blacks using the right side of the brain to think, I believe one of his white supporters (that uses the left side of the brain) should advise him to offer Sen, Clinton the VP position, then maybe we can find some peace in the Dem. party.
Posted by: David | Apr 28, 2008 1:55:22 PM
It really is disgusting how ABC News and Yahoo are all for Obama, so much for not picking sides. They should be ashamed of themselves. If their are any violent reprocussions due to this election, it's all on the media not the people. They would be wise to remember that.
Posted by: kitojj | Apr 28, 2008 1:56:42 PM
Unbelieveable , Wright will single handedly do Obama in , the only honest and decent candidate we have who will work for the American people and actually deny special interest , the corporations and lobbyists who have full control over our government now . Wright and dumb and foolish Americans , a tough combo for Obama to beat .
Posted by: Kenneth | Apr 28, 2008 1:57:15 PM
David -- why would Hillary lower herself to Obama's (aka Soetoro's) level by being his vice-president.
I think he'll pick Cindy Sheehan as his VP to reflect the true new democratic party.

I think Obama is done for. He won't win Indiana, and if he does win N.C. it will be close. I belive he won't win N.C. even with 38% of the Dem. party which happens to be blacks. It's a shame Obama is not a bad candidate he just kept the wrong friends around.
Posted by: David | Apr 28, 2008 2:04:41 PM
Now why should Clinton not tip toe around the Rev Wright issue, its Obama's mess so let him clean it up, this had nothing to do with Hillary.
According to Wright Obama is telling the public what he needs to tell them to get elected, again there is no need for Hillary to comment.
Its a black thing and for Hillary to comment you folks may say she is racists, so let the Obama camp and Obama supporters deal with their clean ups, they can disown Wright or not but whatever they do the will have to face the outcome of Wrights fall out.
Posted by: SJ | Apr 28, 2008 2:08:23 PM
The Clintons did not turn to Wright during his impeachment -- he was invited to an annual meeting of religious leaders which occurred at the same time as the Starr report was being released. "Turning to" would imply personal connection,"invited to" does not. If you now want to accuse the Clintons of accepting Wright in one instance and rejecting him in another, feel free. But, do remember that actions in the White House often reflect the views of constituents just as much as the individual office holder, so pls walk the line carefully when you explain how the president should have not included a pastor/leader of one of the larger black churches in the US b/c of personal differences. [Which is what HRC identified in her response to a direct question.]
As for HRC "surrogates" -- if you don't believe the premise that Obama should have to answer for Wright's comments, than don't play the game of extending the same irrational line of questioning to people even more removed from the principals. Compare HRC / Obama, fine --- saying that you have to look to secondary/tertiary/etc relationships is just ridiculous. That's akin to playing "6 degrees"...

I agree now that there is no way hillary clinton can stick Obama on the ticket as VP.
All of his non electablity issues will follow them around .
He was a great pick as VP , but now he is a total liability.
Posted by: tomdavie | Apr 28, 2008 2:10:19 PM
David: you guys need to wake up and realize this race is over. So Indiana and North Carolina, you can vote for someone who has already lost or you can vote for Obama who already has won this race.
I keep hearing there is a race for popular vote. If there is a race for popular vote, how do you count caucus states (i.e Alaska, Washington State, etc.) where there are no true popular numbers ? So to me the popular vote rhetoric cannot be used by the super delegates in deciding this race. Truly superdelegates should take a look at the delegate counts. Both candidates will beat John McCain, so electability shouldn't be an issue. Infact on the issue of electability, the Republicans appear to prefer to run against Hillary, than Obama.
Bottom line, the Democratic Party has it's Presidential Candidate. It is Obama. He has won the most pledged delegates, he has won the most states, and given the fact that there is no true way of deciphering popular vote received by some of the caucus states it is unusable. Regardless of the outcome of North Carolina and Indiana, Obama has already won the Democratic primary for 2008. The sooner people realize this, the sooner the party can mend and we move forward against the Republicans. To vote for Hillary is like the Republicans still voting for Huckabee... It means nothing..

I'm sick of seeing Obama and Clinton tear each other apart. McCain is the real enemy. When are these two democratic candidates going to start attacking him in earnest? I'm an Obama supporters, yes he does have problems with white blue collar voters in the rust belt and southern states. Both he and Clinton have almost identical platforms. I think they should both be on the same ticket. What do you all say, Obama/Clinton'08
Posted by: Shawn | Apr 28, 2008 2:11:24 PM
Wright is open for the nod for VP maybe Obama should give him a call
Posted by: SJ | Apr 28, 2008 2:11:38 PM
Shawn - Obama can't put someone on the ticket who would energize Republicans and bring negatives of 53 to the race.
There's more at stake than the White House. With Clinton anywhere on the ticket, the Democrats risk losing Congress, too.
Posted by: Paul | Apr 28, 2008 2:15:48 PM

You fail to understand politics and super delegates and what the interest of the party is. WINNING is the GAME.
You can't hold on to a looser. Imagine if someone found out that Obamas was a murderer and they found the bodies and the smokeing gun. Do you believe the super delegates would give it to him . NO

I'd like to see Tony Zinni as running mate. Richardson is obviously a short-lister, and maybe Sebellius, too. Mark Warner would be an interesting pick. And let's not forget Rendell - don't assume he wouldn't accept just because he's helping Clinton now.

Posted by: David | Apr 28, 2008 2:29:37 PM
Joe - I think part of the problem is the non-stop coverage of the candidates. We're too familiar with them, and familiarity breeds contempt.
Yes they all have warts. Who doesn't? How good would the Founding Fathers have looked under this kind of scrutiny?
Washington (don't get me wrong - he's my favorite and my pick for greatest) was obsessed with his image. He was occassionally accused of being not that bright, and more interested in compromise than principles. He chose a location for the capital city that was open to charges of picking one out of personal convenience. His great vision for the future was a commercial canal - one that by the time it opened for business was already obsolete because of the train tracks that run along the canal. His concern for the country was a future split - along east/west lines (rather than the north/south split that in hindsight should have been obvious.
And let's not forget that Washington had slaves, too. He did express a desire to free them... after his widow died, thereby putting her life in danger.
Imagine what today's kind of media scrutiny could do with that.
Posted by: Paul | Apr 28, 2008 2:29:42 PM

Posted by: Aston | Apr 28, 2008 2:42:52 PM
Both Hillary and Bill Clinton have championed the middle class, and the underprivileged for more than twenty years. During those twenty years, Obama has routinely snubbed the middle class and the underprivileged. He’s proven through his words, his actions, and his friends and surrogates that working class whites, older Americans, church-goers, gun owners, people from small towns, Jews, gays, and virtually all other Americans are repugnant to him. Nevertheless, Obama’s aversion to the poor is not relegated just to white working class American’s. He’s even disadvantaged and ignored the needs of his African American constituents, who as tenants, were left freezing in the dilapidated Chicago buildings his pal Rezko owned. Obama did nothing to help his constituents, and nothing to require Rezko to bring the buildings up to code. Obama’s obvious aversion to Americans has finally sunk into the consciousness of the electorate. The latest national Associated Press poll shows Hillary ahead of McCain 50 to 41, Obama, on the other hand, is tied with McCain. The tide has definitely turned.

Why should any canidate be above critisism? He is a great guy, but come on people....it's freaky how some of you act like O'ZOMBIES???? Not too mention the horrible way they act towards the Clinton's. Yeah, you can choose where you work too. Just because someone’s boss is a bigot and thief doesn't mean the employees who work for them are. That is a relationship 8 hours a day, five days a week I might add, far more than an hour a week in a church.
Yet millions of people work for unethical people and businesses across the globe.
This whole argument is so dishonest pointless.

Hillary doesn't need to call attention to the ongoing Wright fiasco, Wright has done that effectively for himself and for Obama.
Hillary is the ONLY presidential candidate who has worked diligently for the middle class and for the underprivileged. Hillary isn't the one that alienated blue collar small town voters, and isn't the one that sat in a church for twenty years listening to hate-filled sermons demonizing America. OBAMA AND REV. WRIGHT: I get tired of Obama claiming to be Christian, without explaining the theology of his church. Rev. Wright preaches BLACK LIBERATION THEOLOGY, a very radical form of "Christianity." Here is a quote about black liberation theology from its founder, Rev. James Cone, and you be the judge as to whether Obama's church preaches anything that even remotely resembles Christianity: ***
“Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community … Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.”
Posted by: James | Apr 28, 2008 3:17:19 PM
Clinton has handled it well by putting it back in Obama's court but I think she should let McCain's camp go at him. For a presidential contender to hang out with someone who believes the American govt started AIDS and that God should damn America is seriously scary. Now Wright claims he was quoting an Iragi official when he asked God to damn America. Didn't sound like that to me when I saw the clip. Obama has yet to be specific in condemning Wrights accusations which means that in some way he supports them.

As an Obama supporter this is one of few times in the entire campaign I can actually congradulate Clinton. Even if it was for Political gain she had never done anything like this before. I know she will kill the mood soon so I want to congradulate and say I am proud of what she said today.

WHAT HAS OBAMA DONE FOR BLACK PEOPLE, other than use them for their support? Did he show up at the Black History Month event recently; no, he was too busy. Did he show up at the Martin Luther King event recently, no, he was too busy. YOU WHO TRY TO IMPLY THAT THE CLINTON'S ARE RACIST OR DO NOT SUPPORT THE BLACK COMMUNITY REPRESENT THE WORST OF THE OBAMA SUPPORTERS.
Here's some irony for you - The Clinton Global Initiative, part of the Clinton Foundation, has secured partnerships for the following initiatives:
$271,000,000.00 over a 5-year period for educational opportunities for 7.5 million children in Africa and Asia.
$40,000,000.00 over 5 years for critical education needs for 3,000,000 girls in Africa.
$12,000,000.00 over 8 years to improve schooling and health outcomes for girls 10-14 in Southern Africa.
Maybe someone should tell Barack Obama and his supporters that trying to label Bill Clinton a "racist" is contrary to everything he has ever done in his life, and is not only dishonest, it is disgusting.
Compare that to Obama's accomplishments in assisting blacks here and around the world (if you can find any).

erich...you are so right...everyone is concentrating on the Wright thing when Hillary and McCain are and have been involved in even worse situatons. Why aren't hese being splashed all over the news....?

Hillary Clinton is a disgrace to our political system. She and her husband are liars and frauds. They certainly do not belong back in the White House or any where near it. !!!!

I remember the religous values debate that CNN moderated. At least Hillary and Obama showed up.
McCain couldn't be bothered. Is he an agnostic? Can't he answer pertinent questions about his faith, religon, and perhaps his core values?

Wright is a National treasure. Anyone listening to him understands he speaks truth to power. It was interesting watching reactions on CNN to his NAACP speech. The commentator started out absolutely amazed @ the intelligence level the sincerity & depth of substance in Rev. Wright's speech. After the break his tone started to change (maybe a call from the boss???) watching this crap unfold is like watching someone throw a maltov cocktail into a delivery room.
Complete utter cowardice on the part of the media. Oh well I guess that explains the redundancy they are all experiencing.

well, if Hillary does pull this off and get the nomination, let's pray to God she beats McCain. I don't think she can do it. McCain will destroy her just the way she has verbally destroyed Obama, for doing nothing but being an American citizen who wanted to change the country for the better. Only time will tell, but I think my fears will coem true. more years of Bush(McCain) and 4000 more young men and women dying to cover up Bush's mistake.

I am proud of Hillary for staning up to her buddy John McCain...Maybe she got the memo that African Americans are mad at her and if she heaps it on too much about Rev. Wright then she might loose her 8% support.
As far as Hillarys baggage...Isnt is scary that not one Republican has criticized her actually they have been defending her? You know why? Because they arent going to show their cards in case she successfuly steals the nomination.

This is what she should do as the leader. HRC showed DEM down tickets & SDs that she can defend them in the general election.

Hillary Clinton has a good reason to keep her mouth almost shut about religion. A book about her particular kind of worship is due out May 20th, and if the mainstream picks up on it, it will make Reverend Wright look like Captain Kangaroo.
Can't wait for her to go back to New York.

Since when did religion Denomination & religious beliefs became colorized and segregated.... "Black Church" .... I thought all Christians believed in the same things, Catholic's Had their beliefs , Lutheran, Baptist, Etc....So Now the Denomination beliefs are also divided by Color....Black or White Church's ? Sounds Racist and segregated....So we did away with segregation in the School's and everywhere else in the 70's at the persistence of the Black's,... but NOT Religion or Church's? .... Sounds Like a Double standard to Me !!!

If Rev. Wright could seal the nomination for Hillary, as he did to her marriage, I do not think she would say: "I would never attend Rev. Wright's church"!

Simply put by my own typical Irish Catholic grandmother:
"Show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are."
For a man who brings no experience, but who, according to his own hype, holds superior judgment, I have to say - we know you now, and we're not liking what we see.

What a horror show! I loathe Hillary Clinton and Jeremiah Wright. He is an egomaniac and she is a hypocrite. Put the two together and they make a great couple. UGH!!!!!!

Bill Moyers made it impossible...and rather stupid...to keep portraying Rev. Wright as a crazy angry black man. The media fabrication does not fit this man.
I suspect both the Clinton and McCain internal polling suggest it is folly to persue attacks on Wright.
It invites Hagee/Parsley/The Family/The Foundation into the conversation.
But look on the bright side, ABC, CNN, FOX, Politico...What a great pundit he'll be on election night. Book him now, before his memoirs come out.

What are the real issues in this campaign? The Reverend wasn’t speaking on Senator Obama’s behalf. This country gives him the right of the first amendment. Freedom of Speech. That is a powerful right the people in this country have. I don’t always agree with my friends, I don’t even always agree with my spouse, but I still love them and will defend their right to have a different opinion. Sniper fire in Bosnia? I will say it is my opinion that Ex-P
