Clinton: Women Know How to 'Clean House'

April 18, 2008 8:14 AM

ABC News' Kate Snow and Eloise Harper Report: At an outdoor block party in Philadelphia Thursday night, Sen Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., criticized the Bush administration and said it was time to "clean house" with a new administration.

The wealthy and well-connected have had a president Clinton explained, "It is time for us to clean house, and one thing women know how to do - we know how to clean house."

Clinton said as the crowd cheered "I've put him notice, I may need you to come and help. There's no telling what we will find."

Speaking from a historic spot in Philadelphia where John F. Kennedy and her husband former President Bill Clinton have both campaigned before, Clinton made veiled references to her Democratic rival Barack Obama, making no mention of the sparring from the prior evening, only asked the audience if they had watched.

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, however, announced that Clinton was the clear victor. Rendell explained that after all of Clinton's comebacks he and Philadelphia Mayor Nutter decided that it was acceptable for her to use the Rocky theme song.

"After the decisive knockout that she scored last night,” Rendell then said "Our own 'Rocky', someone who is going to make a great president. Somebody who is going to change the American lexicon,” because Clinton will be the first woman president, according to Rendell.

Ya....And I hear cleaning those CLOSETS have been a particularly difficult and reoccurring problem for ol Hills.

But Practice, Practice, Practice; that's what she got.

Did she really say that one thing women know how to do is clean house??

Although it is great to see a woman candidate, I really don't think the goal of feminism was female superiority - I thought it was about equality. (I'm a man, so correct me if I'm wrong.) To come out and say, 'vote for me because I'm a woman', really defeats the purpose. It would seem equivalent to Obama saying 'vote for me because I'm black' and McCain saying 'vote for me because I'm white'. Yes, these things are implied sometimes, but I'm astonished someone would actually say it.

Hell yeah we know how to clean up messes. We spend most of our lives cleaning up after men, literally and figuratively. Whether it be our husbands, sons, or our bosses, we end up with all the management, all the child rearing, and all the dirty work. And none of the credit!

Ed as you know well Hill the Bosnian General is unelectable, too much luggage and big high negatives and the last ABC/FoxNews i.e. George and Hannity's poorly managed debate will not change that reality at all. Hill was saying it takes a Clinton to clean after a Bush, she has changed that and she has become a woman. Yes-Yes-Yes Obama will win because he is electable and likable. God bless America and God bless Obama.OBAMA08.

Posted by: BKMC | Apr 18, 2008 8:35:35 AM

Hey MI Guy.. she was using an analogy. Perhaps it went over your head. Maybe because you are a man.

She wasn't asking for you to vote for her because she's a woman, she is just pointing out being a woman is a strength, not a weakness.

Posted by: A reader in georgia | Apr 18, 2008 8:36:39 AM

@a reader in georgia:

very nice... where feminism gets ridiculed is when it dives into hate and superiority. that does not seem to be real feminism in my opinion. i don't disagree in the least that women are undervalued and overworked and underappreciated. sure being a woman is a strength. are you saying that being a man isn't?

Hillary gotts the experience BIG TIME at cleaning up after the Bimbo Erruptions. If any of you got one these going down, pick up the Red Phone and give Hills a call.

She's got your back.

Posted by: The Commander Guy | Apr 18, 2008 8:45:02 AM

well she sure didn't change the lexicon of old school politics... she wins with that old lexicon. She loses with a new one.

Is she going to clean house the cowboy way...her answer on Iran and Israel sure sounds like Cowboy diplomacy...but maybe that is cleaning up and polishing cowboy diplomacy...is that the tactic...

...police the world, clean their house and expect America to pay for the cleaning bill and horse manure removal.

This woman is old school politics that is WHAT she is good at... and THAT is what got us into this situation in the first place.

Call your opponent unpatriotic and scare the voters. Vote to remove the congressional oversight of the President with reference to going to battle then announce in a debate that is overrun with distraction crap that you are going to protect ANY country with MASSIVE retaliation for any attack from a rogue nation.

Have your supporters "clean house" and say these are "VALUE" questions and are the priority, we need to clean house of Value issues" in the debate and I win...but don't bring up my scandals"they have been vetted"...all the while knowing that if you got the nomination you have just cleared the way for the Republicans to argue that the debates in the general can be on this crap and not on the WAR the ECONOMY, Healthcare, etc...

and don't worry that anyone will think..."oh, you know what her house really ain't that clean"

Posted by: dl | Apr 18, 2008 8:54:41 AM

Hey Commander Guy: Maybe you should ask the media to check out what's in Obama's closet..Obama likes to collect crooks and other savory characters..hear that cleaning out closets is not Michelle's thing...

Posted by: calli | Apr 18, 2008 9:04:25 AM

This is kinda true but she is NOT the woman to clean house,First of all her house is a mess.....From money right down to her hubby. And on the smart aqq side she never cleaned a house in her life...A broom what the hey is that...Miss prissy is not a woman to clean anything.I would vote for a woman ONLY if she is smart enought to do the job and in my openion she is NOT

Posted by: h | Apr 18, 2008 9:10:14 AM

Sad state of the feministic movement. Vote for me because: I am a woman; I am better than a man; I am better than the black guy or the old guy; I (we) have been victims too long; I can bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan. Notice that she never declares she is the best women have to offer, because she knows someone will challenge that premise. And of course, is she the Best Person for the job? Answer: We all know - NOT!

Posted by: conservative | Apr 18, 2008 9:14:35 AM

Yeah,

vote for me because I'm a woman.

That's some pretty fine pandering right there.

Posted by: mg | Apr 18, 2008 9:14:38 AM

I think it is exciting to think that the Clintons will be back at the White House again.

Gotta clean it up before you can run it.

The Clintons back in the White House!

It is a much more encouraging/calming thought than Obama with all his "special" associations.....the thought that the people Obama WENT to during his times of need to get where he is now.....turns my stomach.

Posted by: carpenter.nyc | Apr 18, 2008 9:16:46 AM

Someone tell Rendell that Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) endorsed McCain.

Posted by: conservative | Apr 18, 2008 9:18:09 AM

the last time Hillary cleaned the White House she had to return some of the furniture she stole.

Posted by: jAYjAY | Apr 18, 2008 9:36:27 AM

Rendell's right about one thing...Hillary was the clear winner. I'm glad we finally got to see Obama for what he is, sans sycophants in the media doing the defending for him.

Posted by: Cory | Apr 18, 2008 9:44:06 AM

Ok, apparently some of you people were not watching the debate or paying attention. She is not making a comeback in Penn, she was ahead by 16 points and has dropped 10 in three weeks despite hounding her opponent with inane and irrelevant attacks. Keep in mind, Ayers faced all his charges and moved on. The two folks that HRC's husband pardoned had actually committed terrorist acts.
She stated very clearly in the debate that we would be involved in every conflict between nations in the middle east should they arise. It isn't so much that she wants out of Iraq being in Iraq is not enough for her. There is not a country in the region that does not know that there would be a massive counterstrike should a move be made against Israel. This is what has been holding the peace for over 60 years. If there was going to be such a strike now would have been the time since our military is already stretched so thin.
The NIE is very clear about the complete lack of nuclear capability of Iran. The question at the debate was garbage and HRC's answer was Hawkish. The decisions the President has to make are not made on hypotheticals with 90 second answers for sound bites.

Posted by: Louis | Apr 18, 2008 9:55:59 AM

oh, and before you start showing off your house cleaning skills, you were in the house while your husband was committing adultery. You stood by him when he lied about it. (Something that he has yet to apologize for)
If the best you can come up with in opposition research is to start attacking Obama's tangential relationships. You have nothing. Shall we begin to investigate every member of every group you ever belonged to? Weren't a communist working for a communist law firm for a while HRC? Where are all of the people you went to college with and maybe some of the people they have met along the way.

Posted by: Louis | Apr 18, 2008 10:00:13 AM

Why don't you go investigate Larry Sinclair? Also, the rumor that Obama had another "special" relationship while in college and it wasn't with Michelle.

Posted by: LeeLee07 | Apr 18, 2008 10:02:36 AM

I have an idea that might catch on and get the left wing liberal media and strongarming left wing liberals who run the DNC's attention:

Do as I have done, support the person, not the party, as an Independent registered voter.

Change your voter registration from Democrat to Independent after the primary in your state!!!

Disenfranchised in Florida

P.S. Notes to:
h, if you are going to attack Hillary for being a strong woman at least please spellcheck.

Perhaps Obama is not UNELECTABLE because he is black or because he is a man - but because he is GREEN!

Posted by: Disenfranchised in Florida | Apr 18, 2008 11:09:07 AM

She's gonna clean up NAFTA, and mandatory sentences, and all of the other things that her husband did. nice.

Posted by: CC | Apr 18, 2008 11:21:03 AM

Maybe it's time to clean your house lady.

Posted by: EUL | Apr 18, 2008 11:41:17 AM

Why does she always have to use the gender card? Is she that desperate?

Posted by: sally | Apr 18, 2008 12:16:42 PM

If Hillary is not electable, who is. Everyone makes mistake and politicians make the most. She has the stamina to bounce back and look you straight into your eyes and launch a come back. sHe will not quit.

This is the one that you want to be president. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. sHe won't go to Virgin Island when the backyard is on fire and let the others clean up the mess. She is mentally stronger than Bill.

People deny her experience and I think it is nonsense. Of course, she is more experienced than OBAMA who votes about 130 times PRESENCE. WHAT judgement is it? She has been all around the world not just for show case. Look at FACTCHECK and

OBAMA brags that he can change WASHINGTON??? He has never had an opportunity to get to know WASHINGTON, the only way he can do it is to introduce lots of academics in the White House, the big talkers who messes up the country. He may replace the people but worse than before. He couldn't get himself untied from CHICAGO POLITICS, Church and be a truly independent thinker.

If Americans need his inspiration, the Americans are more sick than I think. People only need inspiration from God. He is no God. I abhor the one who play God. God is not Black. For this alone, he shall lose all christian votes except the Black and the liberal extremists. They can put on a sheep skin but sneaking into the White House takes more than that.

Posted by: John_Lai | Apr 18, 2008 12:18:29 PM

When OBAMA flashes the RACE card, it is all right. When Hillary tells people she is woman, you guys put on the gender accusation. Is it fair?

At least Hillary makes a true claim, I can't say it for OBAMA.

Posted by: John_Lai | Apr 18, 2008 12:23:32 PM

@John_Lai:

I am unaware of when Senator Obama ever said that it would be a boon to the country for a black man to be President. To my knowledge, he has said that being a black man named Barack Hussein Obama is not really an advantage. If he has said directly what you insinuate, then my apologies. I just haven't heard it.

Posted by: MIguy | Apr 18, 2008 12:35:16 PM

How could anyone who watched the Debate not agree that Clinton should be our president? She was articulate, eloquent and a served up a durth of information on all questions asked! She is the professional in this race! She will be a fantastic president! Let's get behind and support a qualified candidate for a change!

As for Gibson, the man reminded us what a professional journalist is supposed to looks like.!

Posted by: T. Barr | Apr 18, 2008 12:48:27 PM

You mean how she purged her campaign of the losers that have cost her the nomination thus far? She ran an incumbent campaign and she is still running. She can't even defeat a no-body, Junior Senator. It's oronic she couldn't purge or clean her campagin staff of the losers and ineffective staff and put this guy away months ago.

I think what they mean is SOME women clean house, this one, well she just complains and plays victim.

Posted by: Angela | Apr 18, 2008 12:51:21 PM

Go Mrs Clinton! You go girl!

Posted by: Guido | Apr 18, 2008 12:56:10 PM

Hillary C. thinks that "women know how to clean house" ? Why ? Men cannot clean, or vacuum or iron or take care of kids. Such a feminist !!!

Posted by: Pepou | Apr 18, 2008 1:51:12 PM

Yeah! Hillary knows how to Clean House!
We all saw How She Cleaned House
during the Monica Affair didn't we!
I'm sorry Clinton supporters but the
more she talks the dumber she looks!
Maybe she had a couple of shots too
many! Go away lying fool!

I doubt that Hillary will ever have another opportunity to clean the White House, her in the White House will be a big mess for this country. Without a doubt I will vote for McCain before I support her and her deviseness. He will have a better chance at working with those opposite his party, the republicans will never co-operate with her. With her we will have four more years of fighting and bickering and nothing getting done in Washington if she finds a way to win, which I again doubt seriously!

Posted by: nate | Apr 18, 2008 2:40:45 PM

@Di:

No offense, but on these blogs I see a lot of people saying that if Senator Clinton doesn't get the nomination then they will vote for McCain. Altering your equation slightly then:

A Vote for Obama = A Vote for McCain = A Vote for Clinton

I understand your point; there needs to be something fresh in the Executive Branch. I agree completely.

Posted by: MIguy | Apr 18, 2008 3:37:14 PM

The DNC elite that aren't doing their jobs in the congress and senate are terrified that she's going to clean house. That's why they are doing everything they can to try to get her out of the race, with the media's help.

Wow! She finally wants to clean house? Does that mean we'll see her drag her own skeletons out of her own closets?

Oh sorry. I guess she only wants to look for dirt in other people's houses. Ugh! How typical!

Posted by: Dan | Apr 18, 2008 5:04:33 PM

From the caliber of the posts I see on this and other political blogs, a large portion of the American public deserves a spanking or to be set in the corner for a time-out.

Don't we have better things to do than act like spoiled brats having our favorite toy taken away when our favored candidate is 'picked' on?

I truly fear for the future of this country.

Posted by: 1949gal | Apr 18, 2008 5:40:36 PM

One of the points you are missing is the fact that the deciding factor for many blacks is the fact that Obama is black. There are many women who will choose Hillary as a factor because she is a women. There is a percentage of women republicans who will cross the line to vote for Hillary in the GE. This will happen much less for Obama because the percentage of black republicans is much smaller. I think the women could put Hillary in the WH. If Obama runs I believe he will lose as a large percentage of women democrats are going to switch to McCain.

Posted by: Firefighter | Apr 18, 2008 6:26:50 PM

I applaud ABC mews moderators to go against the grain and ask some tough questions of the media darling Obama.

He looked so small, hunched over, and annoyed, inarticulate.

He could not answer the the American flag question. That's becuase he has been brainwashed by his pastor.

I can see the Republicans making an ad taking the question from the lady in last night's debate and putting Obama's unconvincing answer and juztaposing it with Micehell Obama's comment about feeling proud to be American for the first time after her husband won a few primaries. The ad will end with a question: Would you want this guy to be your President and his wife to be first lady?

Posted by: Tapan | Apr 18, 2008 8:06:30 PM

Hillary is a hero. I thank her for being so strong. She is always about 2 decades ahead of her time in about everything she does, and we supporters love how she's working to accelerate our entire nation's understanding. Her candidacy has made me a better, stronger person.

Here's to Hillary. Keep on moving us forward!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: K | Apr 18, 2008 8:40:22 PM

Firefighter, you talk rubbish! The reason Women vote for Hillary is because she is the only candidate worthy and capable of being President!

Posted by: Di | Apr 18, 2008 8:55:14 PM

I'm an avid Obama supporter, I'll admit, but as a woman, I'm extremely offended by the assertion that the one thing we know how to do is clean house. If anything, Senator Clinton is setting women back with comments like these, plus, always playing the gender card.

Posted by: Erin | Apr 18, 2008 9:53:49 PM

COE: When Obama was on Al Sharptons programme he was discussing the economy he said in a very homeboy like voice which I have never heard him use in mainstream apearances. "We all know that when America gets a cold the black man gets pnuemonia"

Tell me how that wasn't playing the race card.

Posted by: Roslyn D. | Apr 18, 2008 11:43:09 PM

How is this comment by Hillary not elitist, sexist, demeaning, condescending, pandering, offensive, ignorant, etc., etc., etc?

Posted by: Johnjlws | Apr 19, 2008 12:02:21 AM

johnjlws - How can you compare the comments ? One was a joke/ humour the other was a political summary.

Stop being so dramatic.

Women always clean up the mess that men leave behind.

Posted by: char | Apr 19, 2008 7:53:40 AM

Ok I,am a women and yes she was pandering, who hasn,t met a women that hasn,t pander in politics we also powder are faces. But lets look at what this is all about in politics. It,s History, neither Barach nor Hillary unless the local elections become a runaway with the Democrat are going to allow them a whole lot of room to make all the change they want to make so wake up to that fact, this is weather or not the democrats want a women or a african american president. I think outside of the black vote Hillary will win. But seeing what I,ve seen within the Democratic party the old lions like Kennedy, Dodd and the like, what to hold her accountable for what happen to her Husband infildelity. Kennedy? give me a brake! Lets get real if she wins Penn. they will dog her that she didn,t win big and they will roll out the delegate ct. thing and on and on. Let vote what really matters here with a women president in the world and would be much, much bigger symbolically then a man of color. Now domestically it would be big here in the U.S. but does Sen. Obama believe those red states will vote for him? Or is it just a negative because of Hillary! I mean do you really believe he will carry Utah in Nov. NOT! The women vote is the true indication of Hillary strenth. The only problem there is a lot of these women who fall for Obama are unaware of how our political system works for if they did they all would vote for Hillary but as long as they want to work at a rate of 67cents a hr. less then men then vote Obama but if they really want that to change then they better get smart in a hurry in vote for Hillary! Wise up WOMEN if we don,t get a women in now it will be a long time before men will open up this door again! THINK ABOUT IT!

Posted by: Ronald Vaughan | Apr 19, 2008 1:31:36 PM

I'd rather have Hillary cleaning house than Obama. We know what Obama will throw out...anything he doesn't recognize will be "trash". That does not bode well for small town ordinary citizens.

Hillary '08

Posted by: mpwdc | Apr 19, 2008 8:18:02 PM

Hillary is a winner! Obama doesn't even get to Senate meetings on time and when he gets there late he asks questions and makes statements about things that were already discussed...the other Senator's on the committee are always "dressing him down about this". After they get annoyed with him, Obama gets up and walks out. You can't expect to lead the country if after you make a mistake and someone asks you about it you can't get up and walk out of the room. Instead of Elitist...this sounds like a Spoiled Brat!

Posted by: vicki | Apr 19, 2008 10:05:30 PM

I hope people are not fooled by this obama ,hes got too many things folks against him .don't be fooled.if we elect him to be president, then its too late.we know the clintons are very hard workers, and will get the job done.we can not chance him.I had a talk with my family last night.our decision will be if obama is nominee.we will not vote,
we will go from democrats to indepentant.thank you lou dobbs.maybe
a ralph nader vote, but never a john mccain.

Posted by: kathleen | Apr 20, 2008 2:13:02 AM

Somebody, please tell Hill, she needs to step asside before she let's McCane become the president and let us suffer for another 4 years. I really think that is her plan so that she can run against him in 2012. At 64? She'll be better off sitting in her rocking chair writing her memoir. I was for Hill on day one, but when she started crying in NH and started her desparate, 'vote for me because I am a woman' joke, I switched to Edwards. As a woman, I was embarrased to see her that way, because I expected a strong intellegent woman who'd campaign based on proving her talent. I almost went back to her until she started her attacking tactics. Obama, has grace, class, charisma and smarts. With the right exec staff, I am sure he can make the Change. He has remained on the issues rather than retailiating and he got my respect and my undecided vote last night. The media is forcing him to bring the race issue regardless of how much he wanted to trancend it. It is unfortunate we are still in such divisive society. Let's vote for issues rather than gender or race. Let's give the Freshman a chnace to bring some fresh change. Obama 08!
