Condi for Veep? State Says No, No, No...
April 07, 2008 3:39 PM
ABC News' Luis Martinez Reports: State Department reporters once again pressed spokesman Sean McCormack about whether Condi Rice's recent activity can be interpreted as a lobbying effort for the No. 2 spot on McCain's ticket.
What activity you say?
Her recent speech to Grover Norquist's conservative group, her expansive comments on race and education in America to the Washington Times editorial board, and an up close and personal spread in Fitness magazine "lifting weights and looking very human" as one reporter put it. To which McCormack jokingly replied "or superhuman . . . a big "C" on her chest."
"You know, I think if you look back at her tenure, in terms of her activities, you will find all of these activities perfectly normal and consistent with the way she has done her job over the past three years or so. So, like I said this morning, if she's actively seeking the vice presidency, then she's the last one to know about it. She plans on going back west of the Mississippi to Stanford when she's completed her work as secretary of state," McCormack insisted.
"I think in her view, and certainly in my view, she's given that many times over whenever she's been asked this question. She was asked it most recently by . . . the Washington Times, and I think she gave a pretty definitive answer. She said, 'Not interested. Time for new blood.' She's looking forward to going back to Stanford when she's completed her work as secretary of state."
But, why not an airtight denial?
"I'll tell you what. Next time you have a chance to ask her a question, you ask her that question, I'm sure she'll give you a no. I'll tell you no right now, but you can get it from her when you see her next."
Do you think she'll consider running for California governor? McCormack was asked to a round of laughter among the journalists peppering him with questions.
"I think what she is considering is focusing on her work as secretary of state, because you may have missed it, but there's actually quite a bit to do. There's quite a bit left to do here as secretary of state. ..... left on the burner -- on the burners right now, so she's focused on that. And once her work as secretary of state is done, then she looks forward to going back out to California to resume her activities at Stanford. Keep in mind, she's actually on leave from Stanford. She's still a tenured professor at Stanford University."

"quite a bit left to do" the man says, can anyone tell me something she HAS accomplished as Secretary of State?

Extremely brilliant woman. She believes in merit, and does not buy into the victim culture which is being pushed on blacks.
However, running Stanford, NSA, and State is NOT enough experience to be President.
She has never held elected office.
Strong and determined as National Security Advisor--didn't take any crap.
Too weak and soft as Secretary of State. Drank the anti-Israel, pro-Arab koolaid at Foggy Bottom. Too eager to compromise US interests.
Bottom line: No, at least not yet. Go back to California and get elected Senator, Governor, something first.

IF McCAIN PICKS CONDI FOR VP,HE WILL LOSE THE ELECTIONS.
REPUBLICANS ARE LOOKING FOR NEW FACES NOT THE SAME OLD BUSH CABINET MEMBERS.
I"LL SAY NO,NO,NO TO CONDI.

Thanks Carl, you reminded me that as our National Security Adviser, she came up with and authorized a plan for the surveillance of United Nation Security Council officials, including secretly wiretapping home telephones and personal email accounts in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Yeah, that was a biggy.

My vote is for Condi as it always has been! The conservative base of the Republican party should pick McCain's veep, and my vote goes to Condi automatically and without hesitation! She would make a McCain administration look legitimate in every way, and she balances him out in every way, too. Give me 5 minutes with her, and I will change her mind about running!

Condi Rice is a brilliant woman who should stayed at Stanford instead of becoming a Bush lackey. She does not have the stomach for a political campaign.

carl - You make some interesting points. I would argue that all these politicians in Washington with the so-called experience you desire have done us much harm. Seems to me we need some folks without this experience to lead us in the right direction.

While Bush spent the month of August clearing brush in Crawford, Condi was got a memo entitled "Bin Ladin Determined To Strike In US." What was Condi's response, as Nat'l Security Advisor???
*crickets*

Of course the point bill mak3es is much stronger when adressing the right person... or is it?
As for Condi Rize, it seems that she is at least testing the waters. While I do not approve of the president she worked for, or some of her work as JR mentions, her VP candidacy would be an interesting turn in the upcoming election. I doubt that McCain would choose her, though.

If McCain picks Condoleezza Rice for VP , I WILL NOT EVEN VOTE IN THIS ELECTION.
Posted by: Howard | Apr 8, 2008 10:28:21 AM
well howard there's room for you on the other side of the aisle.

Condolezza Rice is great, accomplished, and very intelligent. Unfortunately, if she were picked as VP candidate, people would forget all that and assume it was only because she would fill in the quotas "African-American.. check. Female... check." She deserves better than that (and also a long vacation and a chance to go back home to California).

Yes, Bill. In 11 days, as our National Security Advisor, she could have taken numerous actions to escalate our airline security - specifically regarding boarding individuals on our watch list - and may have saved some lives. Or she could have been honest when confronted on the memo or on subsequent intelligence briefs regarding the imminent threat, which she originally denied even took place.
I'm with Howard. Condi should go back to Stanford. McCain will jeopardize his chances with her on the ticket.

Hey, since Iraq is such a success, why not? I don't see why the greatest security intelligence failure in history should be blamed all on her - even if her fancy-shmancy title was "national security adviser". Any fault-finding toward our darling Condi would be nothing less than a political witch-hunt. At least that's what pundits in the mainstream media would say. I'll drink THAT Kool-Aid!

People take a dose of reality:
"Bin Ladin Determined To Strike In US."
How is anyone supposed to do anything with a statement like this? The statement does not say Bin Laden will strike with planes or has some plan involving planes.
It is so unspecific as to be meaningless. What SHOULD have happened? Take yourself back to 9/10/01. You do not know that tomorrow planes will be hijacked and flown into buildings. You have no facts that suggest WHAT and HOW Bin Laden will strike. What do you do? How do you react? If you can do better then maybe you should go work for the government. Better yet, why not run for President?

hmmm...I think if you're going to get someone from the Bush administration as the VP canidate the GOP will have issues. Too much Bush-Bashing everywhere you go. It's true that if you tell a lie enough times it becomes the truth. While Secretary of State Rice is a very capable woman I think it's important for someone to have run for public office before jumoing into Presidential polotics. Colin Powell is obviously a HUGE name that would add a lot to the McCain ticket but I seriously doubt he's interested. My money is on J.C. Watts for McCain's #2

They are just floating a few names out there to see how bad the reaction is.
Besides, none of the Bush cabinet will be eligible anyway, because they will be to busy defending themselves in court on all their High Crimes and Treason charges that they have committed in the last eight years, Condi included.
Posted by: None of the above | Apr 8, 2008 8:16:24 PM
You idiots who think Condi is not right for VP, have not been paying attention!!
LIKE AL GORE, was he a great chose?? NO!
And what did he do that was so great for the USA?? Nothing!
I would like to see her as VP or even Pres.
But I guess I'm a WASP who think its time for this kind of change, not what the Obama camp is taling about.
YOU GET WHAT YOU VOTE FOR!!

Condi is much too much of a Bush loyalist to make a good VP. As we have seen time and time again, she has gone along with Bush & Co.'s hairbrained foreign policy plans unquestioningly-- and I do not believe that this is for lack of intelligence but for an unwillingness to ask tough questions, arguably a more important trait than intelligence. As a woman of color she may perhaps be a good choice for McCain-- but a bad choice for the country. However, let us reserve judgement on her before we see the alternatives! I would much rather see an intelligent but somewhat weak non-politician presiding over the Senate than, say, the ultra-sleezy, terrifyingly conniving (but wonderfully rich!) Romney.

if she joined obama I would vote for them. otherwise i have to vote in favor of womens rights, above hues rights.

Don't matter, Obama going to win anyway, no matter who Mcain runs with :).

If it were my choice, I'd pick Colin Powell for VP. It would be better to select someone that Bush got rid of than someone that Bush kept.
Posted by: hamishdad | Apr 8, 2008 10:38:26 PM
I think Colin Powell would be the right choice for VP.

to Ginger M.:Here is the true reality;that memo read that Bin Laden{remember him?}was planning to attack the U.S. and that the plan, according to intelligence, which was ignored by everyone in the Bush administration, including by our Security adviser,Condoleeza Rice, included flying airplanes into highrise buildings. That"s the kind of incompetence that killed four thousand Americans.I can"nt understand anyone in their right mind applauding Ms. Rice"s so called skills.
Posted by: Devra | Apr 8, 2008 11:19:45 PM
I hope the rumor is true, so there will be no doubt McCain wants to be Bush's third term. Let's get that right out in the open.
Oh, and about her being a "talented lady," she was the worst NSC Director we have ever had. It was her incompetence more than anyone else's that let 9/11 happen.
Posted by: grytpype | Apr 9, 2008 12:57:37 AM
Ms. Rice is certainly as two-faced as McCain, she's as shallow as McCain and she's missing the same "human" gene as Bush, Cheney, McCain and the other Neocons-- she seems like an ideal Republican candidate to me.
As Gloria Steinem once said, "There won't be true equality until there are incompetent women in high places." Condi and Hillary are proof.
Posted by: Wind Energy | Apr 9, 2008 5:34:30 AM
And what resume does Rice stand on ?
Miserably failing to implement a miserable Bush agenda ?
Being a pawn in setting American state-craft back 40 years ?
Let's be real here.
