Elitist? Obama Says Nah - He's Got "Street Cred as a Down to Earth Guy"
April 25, 2008 3:13 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Does having five suits, four pairs of shoes, and being a better bowler than some think make you a common man?
It's not every day that a candidate's fashion sense makes its way into a press availability, but today in Indianapolis, Indiana, Barack Obama had to defend his wardrobe choices, making the case that he is not an elitist.
The question came from a local reporter, who said he's been looking like the "GQ candidate." And in the wake of the "bitter" controversy, which prompted his opponents to label him an elitist, the timing of the question was particularly poignant.
Obama launched into a long diatribe listing all of the things that he believes place him in the common man category, rather than the elitist side.
"I think this is a fairly standard suit here," he explained, "I haven't changed my approach to dressing too much. . . I basically buy five of the same suit, and then I patch them up and wear them repeatedly."
"I have four pairs of shoes," Obama added.
The presidential candidate also said he can bowl with the best of the regular guys, arguing that the way that he's been portrayed as a bad bowler is simply not true.
"I have committed to practicing bowling so that I'm better. Although I do have to say the fact that you guys reported that as if I had actually bowled ten frames… You know how there was only seven frames and two of them were bowled by a ten year old… I can’t excuse away the first two gutter balls."
All kidding aside, Obama pointed the finger rather at his opponents, saying that charge of elitism was better suited for them. "It’s true that both the republicans and my opponents to some degree have been trying to paint me as, you know, this elitist out of touch," Obama said. " It's hard for me to figure that out given that you know, I was raised with far fewer advantages than either of my two remaining opponents.”
Obama said he had a similar upbringing to the people of Indiana and mentioned his time as a community organizer in the South Side of Chicago.
"I don't want to go out of my way to sort of prove my street cred as a down to earth guy," the presidential candidate concluded.
When asked, the Obama campaign would not divulge what brand of suit Obama wears.

Hmmm.... he owns 4 pairs of shoes.
How long before some dead ender strings together some theory that obama unelectable because in fact he may have at least 5 or maybe even 6 pairs of shoes? Which would make him a dishonest elitist to BOOT.

It's really kind of funny (but sad too) what people find important in another human being. Obama is a very, very smart, well educated man who has worked hard to get where he is, and to call him an elitist is a bit strange considering his background.

Obama is pretty funny!
Tonight Obama is playing 3 on 3 basketball in Indiana.
Should be great!!!!

Oh Puhleeez... I'm no Obama supporter but finding him elitist because of his cloths! Really... that's stretching it. A person in a suit can be a down home and a person in a shirt and shorts can be an elitist.
Elitism is in one’s approach toward others - not how one looks. Like how he views small town voters from the opposite end of the microscope... as if they were subjects to be examined and he was a disinterested scientist.

Obama has already bought the nomination with his little deal with the DNC so why bother to bash Clinton, all you guys need to do now is beat McCain.
You all should be very proud of your ethical arrangement to ensure Obama gets the nod, so let the Clinton's go in peace now, start to concentrate on McCain.

How can you trust a guy who pastor says he'll say anything he thinks people want to hear because he's a politician.
Who should we believe?

Some reporter actually asked a presidential candidate why he was wearing a suit? Man, our societal standards have dropped. But then I remember when people were concerned about looking nice for flights.

ok, we have truly gone round the bend now. First he is unelectable because of what his pastor (apparently one of the most evil men in the country last week)said about America. Now His pastor is some paragon of virture so that his words about Obama being a politiician are some how full of meaning. For the record the pastor never said that Obama would say antyhing because he is a politician. He was drawing the distiction that he is a pastor and not a political figure and that Obama is a politician and not a pastor.

Obama was raised by his white grandparents. He attended the best schools, and was afforded every possible opportunity. He is elitist by choice. He sees himself as better than others, and exempt from any fallout for his "behind closed door" words and behavior. Rev. Wright's elitism is similar, given the one Million dollar mansion TUCC is building for him in an exclusive Illinois gated community. The irony is that the residents of this exclusive community are 93 percent white.

All hail Obama! All hail Obama!
{Hope that keeps me out of the re-education camps if he's elected.}

What about the shoes, though? What about the shoes?

The reverend suddenly gets religion. What is needed most is a sincere apology from the reverend to the American people and to the United States of America. We can only hope that he has had true contrition for his sins and the anger and rage are gone.

What's funny is that we use how many pairs of shoes a guy has to determine whether or not he's fit to lead the country. Sometimes I wonder if people are stupid, then I stop wondering and just realize that they are. I'm not an Obama fan and of the three candidates would be least likely to vote for him, but it has nothing to do with whether he gives a good speech or wears Armani suits.

Its becoming increasingly clear that what's delaying superdelegates from making their choice clear is fear of retaliation and conflict with the Clintons. This is sad. I didnt realize that a person could bully their way into becoming the president of the United States. Apparently they can.

No down to earth guy uses the term "street cred'
Posted by: geevill | Apr 25, 2008 3:57:58 PM
The reporter should ask him to take a look what shoes, suit brand he was wearing at that time.
Probably Armani/Hugo boss/Versace, just name it.
The next time he will wear suit, shoes made in K Mart.

He acts High above people, which is elitist.
Obama tries to relate to the people he is with at the moment. He is a playa.

Rick,
He's inspired by JFK .
No surprise.

Obama sat in a racist church listening to hate for 20 years.......that is not elitist.......that is not ignorance?

Crisis08 - agree completely:
Were they Bruno Magli or Tom McCann? Did it match his belt? Was the suite narrow or broad striped? Boxers or briefs? What kind of tie knot did he use? This was obviously an un-seasoned reporter to not have asked these burning questions! The quality of investigative reporting has, sadly, declined. We need to know these hot-button issues before deciding whether to support him or not.
