Elitist? Obama Says Nah - He's Got "Street Cred as a Down to Earth Guy"
April 25, 2008 3:13 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Does having five suits, four pairs of shoes, and being a better bowler than some think make you a common man?
It's not every day that a candidate's fashion sense makes its way into a press availability, but today in Indianapolis, Indiana, Barack Obama had to defend his wardrobe choices, making the case that he is not an elitist.
The question came from a local reporter, who said he's been looking like the "GQ candidate." And in the wake of the "bitter" controversy, which prompted his opponents to label him an elitist, the timing of the question was particularly poignant.
Obama launched into a long diatribe listing all of the things that he believes place him in the common man category, rather than the elitist side.
"I think this is a fairly standard suit here," he explained, "I haven't changed my approach to dressing too much. . . I basically buy five of the same suit, and then I patch them up and wear them repeatedly."
"I have four pairs of shoes," Obama added.
The presidential candidate also said he can bowl with the best of the regular guys, arguing that the way that he's been portrayed as a bad bowler is simply not true.
"I have committed to practicing bowling so that I'm better. Although I do have to say the fact that you guys reported that as if I had actually bowled ten frames… You know how there was only seven frames and two of them were bowled by a ten year old… I can’t excuse away the first two gutter balls."
All kidding aside, Obama pointed the finger rather at his opponents, saying that charge of elitism was better suited for them. "It’s true that both the republicans and my opponents to some degree have been trying to paint me as, you know, this elitist out of touch," Obama said. " It's hard for me to figure that out given that you know, I was raised with far fewer advantages than either of my two remaining opponents.”
Obama said he had a similar upbringing to the people of Indiana and mentioned his time as a community organizer in the South Side of Chicago.
"I don't want to go out of my way to sort of prove my street cred as a down to earth guy," the presidential candidate concluded.
When asked, the Obama campaign would not divulge what brand of suit Obama wears.

Hmmm.... he owns 4 pairs of shoes.
How long before some dead ender strings together some theory that obama unelectable because in fact he may have at least 5 or maybe even 6 pairs of shoes? Which would make him a dishonest elitist to BOOT.
Posted by: The Commander Guy | Apr 25, 2008 3:22:29 PM
It's really kind of funny (but sad too) what people find important in another human being. Obama is a very, very smart, well educated man who has worked hard to get where he is, and to call him an elitist is a bit strange considering his background.

Obama is pretty funny!
Tonight Obama is playing 3 on 3 basketball in Indiana.
Should be great!!!!
Posted by: Stacey | Apr 25, 2008 3:29:04 PM
Oh Puhleeez... I'm no Obama supporter but finding him elitist because of his cloths! Really... that's stretching it. A person in a suit can be a down home and a person in a shirt and shorts can be an elitist.
Elitism is in one’s approach toward others - not how one looks. Like how he views small town voters from the opposite end of the microscope... as if they were subjects to be examined and he was a disinterested scientist.

Obama has already bought the nomination with his little deal with the DNC so why bother to bash Clinton, all you guys need to do now is beat McCain.
You all should be very proud of your ethical arrangement to ensure Obama gets the nod, so let the Clinton's go in peace now, start to concentrate on McCain.

How can you trust a guy who pastor says he'll say anything he thinks people want to hear because he's a politician.
Who should we believe?
Posted by: Kardasia_Prime | Apr 25, 2008 3:33:28 PM
Some reporter actually asked a presidential candidate why he was wearing a suit? Man, our societal standards have dropped. But then I remember when people were concerned about looking nice for flights.
Posted by: Paul | Apr 25, 2008 3:35:54 PM
ok, we have truly gone round the bend now. First he is unelectable because of what his pastor (apparently one of the most evil men in the country last week)said about America. Now His pastor is some paragon of virture so that his words about Obama being a politiician are some how full of meaning. For the record the pastor never said that Obama would say antyhing because he is a politician. He was drawing the distiction that he is a pastor and not a political figure and that Obama is a politician and not a pastor.
Posted by: Louis | Apr 25, 2008 3:42:05 PM
Obama was raised by his white grandparents. He attended the best schools, and was afforded every possible opportunity. He is elitist by choice. He sees himself as better than others, and exempt from any fallout for his "behind closed door" words and behavior. Rev. Wright's elitism is similar, given the one Million dollar mansion TUCC is building for him in an exclusive Illinois gated community. The irony is that the residents of this exclusive community are 93 percent white.

All hail Obama! All hail Obama!
{Hope that keeps me out of the re-education camps if he's elected.}

What about the shoes, though? What about the shoes?
Posted by: The Commander Guy | Apr 25, 2008 3:55:56 PM
The reverend suddenly gets religion. What is needed most is a sincere apology from the reverend to the American people and to the United States of America. We can only hope that he has had true contrition for his sins and the anger and rage are gone.
Posted by: benvictor | Apr 25, 2008 3:56:10 PM
What's funny is that we use how many pairs of shoes a guy has to determine whether or not he's fit to lead the country. Sometimes I wonder if people are stupid, then I stop wondering and just realize that they are. I'm not an Obama fan and of the three candidates would be least likely to vote for him, but it has nothing to do with whether he gives a good speech or wears Armani suits.
Posted by: senoy | Apr 25, 2008 3:56:31 PM
Its becoming increasingly clear that what's delaying superdelegates from making their choice clear is fear of retaliation and conflict with the Clintons. This is sad. I didnt realize that a person could bully their way into becoming the president of the United States. Apparently they can.
Posted by: Mike Denhof | Apr 25, 2008 3:56:49 PM
No down to earth guy uses the term "street cred'
Posted by: geevill | Apr 25, 2008 3:57:58 PM
The reporter should ask him to take a look what shoes, suit brand he was wearing at that time.
Probably Armani/Hugo boss/Versace, just name it.
The next time he will wear suit, shoes made in K Mart.
Posted by: crisis08 | Apr 25, 2008 4:00:45 PM
He acts High above people, which is elitist.
Obama tries to relate to the people he is with at the moment. He is a playa.

Crisis08 - agree completely:
Were they Bruno Magli or Tom McCann? Did it match his belt? Was the suite narrow or broad striped? Boxers or briefs? What kind of tie knot did he use? This was obviously an un-seasoned reporter to not have asked these burning questions! The quality of investigative reporting has, sadly, declined. We need to know these hot-button issues before deciding whether to support him or not.
Posted by: smartprimate | Apr 25, 2008 4:03:44 PM
Since when is "street cred" a presidential qualification. This guy is one empty suited bag of gas. Followed by that other , sniper dodging, bag of gas. We are in real trouble as a nation.
Posted by: Chas | Apr 25, 2008 4:03:46 PM
Obama was raised by his white grandparents. He attended the best schools through scholarships. He sees himself equal to others. And as of 4-5 years ago, he paid off he and Michelle's college loans.
If anyone is an elitist, it's the Clintons and McCains
The Clintons earned $20 million+ last year
The McCains are worth $100 million+
The Clintons should ask the fraud of a friend whose trial begun today, Peter Paul, for some financial advice
Seems as her campaign having financial problem, especially with her TOP donor bailing out on her to join the Obama camp... reported today
Or maybe she should call her terrorist friends on Obama... rough him up a bit... eh???

Posted by: Vanessa | Apr 25, 2008 4:06:33 PM
It sounds like a fawning reporting was complementing Obama on his outfit and then Obama went nito a rant about his shoes, bowling, and "steet cred".
Posted by: geevill | Apr 25, 2008 4:07:29 PM
I cant stand obama and I think he would be horrible for this country....but I think that question asked by that reporter is really pretty stupid.
Posted by: matt | Apr 25, 2008 4:08:45 PM
Seah,
I agree.
Why he talked about the bitter people to the multi billionaires?
Now , he tries to embrace them?
It's too late.
In my state we have lots of small towns and those people were very upset about his comment because they have very good life and they are not poor even they live in a small town.
Posted by: crisis08 | Apr 25, 2008 4:08:50 PM
This guy changes his words every day, every moment. No one can trust him. BTW, what kind of change is he asking for? American political system has been proved the highest standard one. Are you going to change it? What a joke!

Posted by: geevill | Apr 25, 2008 4:14:52 PM
i laugh about this all the time...the guy who is third generation American elite who is married to a multi multi millionaire wife who went to the schools he went to and the ivy league woman in the pearls who hasn't driven herself anywhere in 30 years...who didn't want to "bake cookies" who is worth over a hundred million dollars and flies on private jets...
and they are throwing the elitist term at Obama
no wonder they think the "foreclosure crisis will either work itself out" or "that a stipend from a paycheck will be worked out with a tax credit and that will fix peoples rent each month that they are paying instead of their healthcare"
ugh.
lol lol lol all the way to my student loans...

I really don't think HRC is wearing clothes out of JC Penny's. Who cares how many suits he has or the brand. He's entitled to have whatever he wants both he and wife have jobs and people who work can buy what they want.
Posted by: Chaine | Apr 25, 2008 4:19:20 PM

I don't need a President with "street cred".
This is getting really embarassing.

The Commander Guy:
C'mon, do you actually think Mr. I'm so hot it hurts, actually has only four pairs? Methinks not.
Elitism is a belief and an arrogant attitude that one is superior to others. Generally, people who are elitist hold deep insecurities, which they defend against by holding themselves as a cut above. Some elitists demonstrate this attitude with shoes, cars, and other artifacts. Others demonstrate this attitude by working from a position of intellectual and classist exclusivity, as Obama did with his upscale donors in San Francisco. Chances are good that he has more than four pairs of shoes, but even if he doesn’t, his elitism is a fundamental personal attitude.
Posted by: Emily | Apr 25, 2008 4:22:25 PM
Please just forget about he was raised by single mother and his grand parents.
Lots of kids raise by single parent. It does not mean their parent are poor.
Raised by single parent is different than economic problem.
For Obama, he was raised by her mother who remarried to Indonesian man and they then lived in Indonesia for many years.
In Indonesia he attended to private high school which was pretty expensive.
His grandmother was a VP of bank in Hawaii.
How much VP salary at that time.
I'm sure it's more than enough to support him.
Posted by: crisis08 | Apr 25, 2008 4:22:47 PM
This has gone beyone ridiculous. We have sky high oil, wheat, and rice prices, the bottom has fallen out of the housing market, we have two wars raging with no end in sight, and Senator Obama gets asked about his suit?
Posted by: jmengate | Apr 25, 2008 4:22:57 PM
Does anyone remember those insignificant things ... now what were they called? Oh yeah, issues? I personally don't care what shoes the candidates wear, where they go to church, what they eat, or even what they do in their bedrooms. I do care about our sinking economy, the young people who are losing their lives in Iraq, climate change, etc. Come on Democrats, let's elevate these discussions, no matter who your candidate is. There's really important work to be done!
Posted by: louielouie | Apr 25, 2008 4:25:54 PM
Emily - So is it fair to say that one is elitist if someone thinks they are better than anyone else in the whole entire country to do something? Like, run a country for example. Wouldn't this make all three candidates elitist by some people's definition? Do we really want Joe 6-Pack running our country? I mean, he'd be better than Bush/Cheney, but can't we strive for something better?
Posted by: jmengate | Apr 25, 2008 4:25:55 PM
Obama just made a big mistake by talking about his clothes.
People will see that one of his suits costs more than the $10,000 lessons he buys for his daughter--boo hoo.
This will make a $200 haircut seem cheap!
Yes, Obama is a common man! HA! We ALL have to worry about making political deals with thieving land developers to buy our homes!
Posted by: John | Apr 25, 2008 4:27:18 PM
jp, michigan - It's funny you make those comments about Chicago/Illinois politics given that you appear to be from a state that can't even follow the simple rules set down by the DNC for the primary election. Can't refute what you say, though.
Posted by: jmengate | Apr 25, 2008 4:28:17 PM
It doesn't matter what is your background but it matters what is your thought and what do you think of other people....
His "bitter" speech just simply indicates he IS an elitist in his deep mind... unfortunately it was exploded to surface by "accident"....
Posted by: True Truth | Apr 25, 2008 4:28:18 PM
You know...for Obama to claim "street cred" is absolutely the MOST laughable thing I've heard from a politician this season. HE probably got this "cred" when HE was dodging some sniper fire in the Chicago streets. LOL.
COME ON!

Posted by: Ed | Apr 25, 2008 4:35:09 PM
I'm missing the point...is it a good thing or a bad thing to have 4 pairs of shoes?
Any woman worth her salt has at least 20 pairs...and most who aren't living in poverty probably have a lot more than that (60? 100?). So....how many pairs of shoes does Hillary have, so we can judge her "street cred"?
Posted by: I love shoes | Apr 25, 2008 4:35:29 PM
Obama is unelectable. Period. Wake up Super Delegates. That's why they're there... To make the correct choice, when a candidate crashes and burns. Sorry kids...

Chaine,
I agree people can wear anything they want to.
The problem here is he was the one brought up these whole things.
He commented about poor people are bitter and now he needs to defend himself with pretending like they are the same like him.
Posted by: crisis08 | Apr 25, 2008 4:37:56 PM
jmengate:
Like you, I'm not crazy about McBush at the helm, but I can't ignore Obama's myriad issues. His arrogance, thin accomplishments, and dubious friends really scare me.
True, all three candidates certainly believe they are superior enough to be our chief national administrator. Whether they are or not is obviously debatable. There's definitely a quest for power demonstrated by all three, and I'm sure an incredible level of ego abounds. Nevertheless, I believe Hillary is the stronger, smarter, and more experienced choice, warts and all.

"For those of you who are to young to remember JFK, just have a look at Senator Obama, he's cut from the same cloth."
I'm not too young to remember JFK. He was one of the worst Presidents we had in the 20th century.
Nearly got us killed over the Cuban missile crisis; got us into Viet Nam; did nothing for poverty or civil rights (that was all Johnson's doing afterward); minimal experience, which showed; and miserable moral character. A great orator & book writer, but a poor performer, and no actions worth pointing back to and praising.
Yes, he's seen with a halo by those who only remember that he came from a prominent family, had an attractive wife & children (and self), was Ivy educated, and died horribly and young.
On the face of it, he IS very similar to Obama...but that's NOT a good thing.
Posted by: I was there | Apr 25, 2008 4:43:04 PM
Yeah the term "street cred" should go over really well with the white working class in middle America.
I'm not sure that's exactly what they are looking for.
Posted by: s.b. | Apr 25, 2008 4:43:05 PM
Elitism is a state of mind. To say that how much money you came from has to do with whether or not you are an elitist is not true. There are many people who came from money or have since earned money and they do not act like an elitist. People can be elitists simply because they think they are smarter than everyone else. Again, Obama says something and his supporters just lap it up.
Posted by: sarnorton | Apr 25, 2008 4:44:48 PM
Yes, The Commander Guy, I'm sure Hillary has a ton of shoes. No question. In all honesty, I do too.
Elitism isn't relegated to public officials, many people in our culture have this attitude. The problem is when it informs a public officials judgment, and could have the potential to hurt the rest of us.
Posted by: Emily | Apr 25, 2008 4:48:00 PM
Obama said, "I don't want to go out of my way to sort of prove my street cred as a down to earth guy."
It's not that he doesn't WANT to. It's that he CAN'T. It's impossible to prove a negative.
Not all of us were raised by a highly educated mother and further supported and raised by a wealthy (vice president of Hawaii's largest bank) grandmother...not all of us were raised by people who could afford the cost of living in Hawaii (not to mention the cost of out-of-state tuition)...not all of us were able to go to an affluent private school...not all of us went to the very best colleges...not all of us were able to move into plush condos in wealthy areas (all without ever getting their hands dirty doing a "real job")...not all of us could afford to donate large sums of cash to an anti-American bigot who would later sing our political praises (and we're supposed to believe liberals believe in seperation of church and state!).
No, not all of us are the chronic liars the Obamas are.
Hey mainstream media...Obama has had it easy his ENTIRE FREAKIN' LIFE. Why do you insist on making his undeserved (and utterly unprepared) road to the Presidency easy for him as well?
Posted by: ynot4tony2 | Apr 25, 2008 4:48:36 PM
when i was a young man a relative tried to persuade me not to join the military. the reasons given were that i was better then the illiterate poor that only joined the military because they had no choice, i didnt know it at the time but that was my first experience with the elite. how a man dresses make him elite? no its what he says and does that conveys his sense of superiority over his fellow citizrns.
Posted by: blaise | Apr 25, 2008 4:48:40 PM
I had to laugh. You can't just declare yourself as having street-cred. That's as credible as saying, "but I have friends that are black." The fact that he won't divulge the brands only shows they are expensive ones.
Posted by: nico1872 | Apr 25, 2008 4:49:23 PM

I don't think people care about what he wears as much as what he thinks. You know, bitter and cling to guns and religion. I can be President with little on my resume. I can go to a church and be totally emersed in the Rev, but not really believe or hear what he says. The gas prices are all Washington DC's fault, but I really want all of them to endorse me.

Wow, a black guy raised by his mom and grandparents. Who lives on the southside of Chicago. Who worked hard enough to go to Harvard (without having connections to get him in) and could have graduated into a highpaying job but instead decided to work for the people of his community. Then went into public service. And who just recently paid off his student loans. And he is being portrayed as elitist. Only in America could his story be possible and only in America could THIS story be considered legitimate news.

I am happy to see Barack finally point to his opponents as being potential elitist.
I find it hard to believe that Bill & Hillary made over $109M, with undisclosed amounts of money in the Caman Islands and can be considered regular folk.
It is equally hard to believe that John McCain flies around in a private jet, owns 9 homes and is married to a women worth over $100M and is regular folk.
The fact is that none of these candidates are regular folks. Our whole process is about picking a highly qualified individual to lead our country.

The last thing a person thinks about Barack Obama is that he is somehow above them and not caring about them. These tired political ploys are being milked by the media for all their worth. The Rev. hell, we don't need another unprepared coward after the last for years.

What Obama doesn't get, and what I don't hear any reporters asking him, is this. Doesn't he realize that being an elitist refers to a state of mind - an attitude - and not by the circumstances of your upbringing or your wardrobe?

Gee, I didn't read the part of Obama's autobiography when he LIVED IN A CAGE FOR 5 1/2 YEARS. Must have missed it. Any military brat will be surprised to know living on a military base and moving every 2 years, having one or both of your parents deployed, is a life of elitism.
Obama is clueless. His vanity is endless.

Republicans are desperate to change the subject from McCain's policies to anything else. They KNOW deep down in the pits of the abyss that used to be their heart, that they're only chance is Hillary Clinton. Hillary is the only way they can possibly foist the old man on America. Why? Because Hillary is the only democrat in this race stupid enough to have helped stick America's collective head into the bucket of manure that is Iraq.
It is Washington politics at it's worst.

I appears that Guerra-Mondragon might have gotten a very hefty offer from obama no? I am sure he is tripling his salary with obama, just to "come over to the other side" and start trashing Clinton. Oh what a tangled web we weave.........Just like Wright has been stating over and over and over: Obama is a politician. Need we say more?
Yes, at one time the Clintons did request a meeting with Wright - but did Wright have to accept? He!! No he didn't. He went to publicize himself - remember the picture of him star gazing at Bill Clinton's face while Clinton was truly absorbed in something else - also do you remember Wrights comments about Hillary Clinton FROM THE PULPIT OF HIS CHURCH? Do you further remember his obscene hip gestures while SPEWING HATE ABOUT BILL CLINTON AND MONICA FROM THE PULPIT OF HIS CHURCH? Now put together this entire picture and what do you get: A White hating, Anti-American supposed "preacher" who preaches hate sermons from his church, then turns around and sells these hate sermons out of his church to make money. Selling hate from a church, supposedly a Christian Church. Then, he buys with Church money a 1.5M mansion in a 93% White Community while spewing hate about rich white people. You tell me what I should make of this? Tell me why then should I support someone like obama who has made this person a 20 year friend and advisor?

Dear Barack,
If you have to say you have "street cred," you probably don't.
Especially when you moved from the mean streets of Hawaii to establish your "black cred."

Let's say you need a life saving operation or maybe one for your kid. Are you going to choose the surgeon who wears a flag lapel pin? Who is no smarter than you are? The guy you want to have a beer with?
I want my president to inspire me, to be smarter than me, to be the person I can look up to and if that means he or she is an elitist then bravo. Instead, we have a process where we dumb down the candidates because bubba wants a bowling buddy. We got one for eight years and look what has happened to us.

Look, if Obama is an elitist because he made only 4 million dollars last year, then just about every single person working in our government is an elitist. for one moment, get off that stupid subject and think about our economy. how much it's failing, how much gas is, how much food is, how much everything is compared to how much we make. He has worked his life away to make that 4 million hes got, McCain barely worked a day in his life for the 100million he's "reporting" for last year.

Obama, please put on one or your 5 suits and 4 pairs of shoes and agree to debate HRC another time so that we can put all doubt to rest that you have the debating skills needed to whip McCain in the general election.
